If you call in a favour from the Mafia, it’s a sure thing alright, but never how you imagine.
Irish stud farm manager and bloodstock expert Oliver McMahon is tired of his life and a boss who neither rewards nor recognises his abilities. He turns to his wealthy brother Richard for help in setting up his own venture, only to be rejected and in the process, discovers a family secret.
On the brink of despair, Oliver remembers and calls in a favour promised ten years before by an American businessman who is clearly engaged in some unsavoury dealings. Oliver is too distracted and impatient to care as he gets back on track with a rich client, a large budget, top class horses and an old flame rekindled.
As the thoroughbreds start winning, all Oliver’s dreams are being realised. But soon he’s pulled into a tangled web of narcotics, deceit and sinister threats.
When Richard is murdered, Oliver has to face the awful truth that a decade-old act started the chain of events which led to his brother’s killing. Oliver has no choice but to become as ruthless as Richard if he’s to extricate himself from a lose-lose situation. Death or a lifetime in prison – the stakes have never been higher.
Oliver McMahon is the living proof that no good turn goes unpunished. After saving a little boy from death by traffic he is rejected for help by his brother and goes back to the offer he received and falls into a criminal plot which he is scared to break out of when his brother is murdered. With help from his fiancé he sets up a sting to get revenge and escape the web of greed he is now trapped in and the ending is left a bit up in the air but the story to get there is one of intrigue.
Similar to Dick Francis but there’s no hard, put upon hero. Usually I don’t finish books or movies when the lead character gets in trouble by doing something incredibly stupid and/or illegal but I’ve come to realize that there are incredibly stupid people in the world who don’t think about anything except their own immediate welfare. Funnily, I came to this conclusion by following American politics, specifically the republicans and their insanely, radical followers.
A sure thing was a fascinating story! Very enjoyable, intriguing, and definitely had the pages turning to find out what happened next! Right to the very last page.
It is a sure thing that this writer has no care about profaning that which is sacred to many or flinging f-bombs as if they were candy. Not worth reading.
What the heck, RIVETING !!! Such a good read, couldn’t put it down. Thank you Sam O’Brien. Most enjoyable book for a long time I’ll be looking for you in my future 👌🏻
