A Del of a Life: Lessons I've Learned

Rate this book
The hilarious and heartfelt new autobiography from the national treasure Sir David Jason

''So lithe,' they say. 'So spry and sparkling. So uncannily youthful. How on earth do you do it?'

Well, what can I tell you? An hour of tai chi first thing in the morning, an HIIT work-out with my personal trainer, a bowl of steamed kale and a handful of almonds for lunch, and then two hours of yoga in the afternoon followed by an ice bath - this is a routine which I'm sure would work miracles for anyone of any age, although I can't be entirely sure because I haven't myself adopted any aspect of it at any point.

Fortunately, during my life and career I have been given all sorts of advice and learned huge amounts from some great and enormously talented people. I've been blessed to play characters such as Derek Trotter, Granville, Pop Larkin and Frost, who have changed my life in all sorts of ways, and taught me lessons that go far beyond the television set. And I've worked a few things out for myself as well, about friendship, ambition, rejection, success, failure, adversity and fortune.

With any luck, some of these thoughts and observations will chime with episodes and challenges you have faced, or are facing, in your own life. And if they don't... well, hopefully, at the very least you'll get to have a good old laugh at my expense.

So lean back, pour yourself a glass, and try not to fall through the bar flap . . .

British national treasure David Jason recounts a career spanning 50+ years which coincided with his 80th birthday mere weeks prior to the national lockdown in March 2020.

For an actor who has been constantly working and created so many memorial characters this third volume of his memoirs shows a frustration of his industry grinding to a half.
At the same token Christopher Eccleston would never have reprised his role as the Ninth Doctor in audio and would Andy Serkis have read The Lord of the Rings audiobooks?
I actually remember seeing Jason's fun video for the NHS citing Triggers Broom as a good example for knowing how far to socially distance.

Much of his recollections feature the circumstances and fates that led to his success.
I already knew that Only Fools was in danger of cancellation, but that's a perfect example of a lucky break as the repeats helping the series gain an audience which led to some of the most funniest moments that I can still distinctly remember watching for the first time as a young boy.

In fact my first exposure to Jason (though I didn't know/understand at the time) was his voice work for Danger Mouse, Count Duckula and The BFG.
I agree that star casting has now spoiled so many animations, though I wondered if the target audience for Peter Rabbit would know and recognise James Cordon.

Jason will always be known as Del Boy, but all his main roles are mentioned throughout this highly entertaining icon reminiscing thought lockdown.

I grew up on programmes such as Open All Hours and Only Fools and Horses. Whilst I never really watched some of the other famous programmes that the actor has been in, he has always been a firm favourite from my childhood home to now well into my adult life. My husband is also a huge fan and we have the Only Fools and Horses box sets and watch them as well as the re runs on the telly.

Each chapter is an insight into what his life was like as an actor and trying to catch a break. There are disappointments along the way as well as some well deserved highs. We get little snippets of behind the scenes and the writers and actors that David has met and worked with along the way.

I especially loved reading of the friendship that he and Ronnie Barker had. Ronnie was somewhat of a mentor to David and the respect and admiration that David has for him is very much felt when he talks about him. The author also shares some pictures with his readers of which I really enjoyed looking at and again brought back memories of some of my favourite shows.

A Del of a Life is a wonderful behind the scenes insight into a national treasure. David Jason is an actor who can do no wrong for me. I don’t think there has ever been anything I’ve seen him in that I didn’t enjoy. This is the first book that I have read about him of which he is obviously quite a private man. This book was the perfect opportunity to get to know the man behind the characters. I especially love when he talks about his time writing the book and during lockdown. It gives you a sense that no matter who you are, we are all in the same boat. Would whole heartedly recommend.

I have read several books by David Jason either writing as himself or as Delboy, and while this is not the best of the bunch it does make for an entertaining read. Its basically a book of mantras and lessons that have helped David Jason to become one of the most recognised actors still alive today. Its full of funny anecdotes and heart warming stories. It also is a good guide book for anyone wanting to have a career in entertainment, as it informs you of the up's and down's, the high's and low's of making it to the top. Well worth a read and definitely an insightful book.

Really enjoyable read. Glimpses of David Jason’s acting career and some of the lessons he learned along the way. Written in his own inimitable style, very funny, but sometimes quite poignant. A must for all fans of this great actor.

An interesting trip down memory lane

An interesting trip down memory lane with David and his characters. David Jason takes you backstage and tells you the bits we didn't see. Fascinating read. The photos at the end are fabulous.

David Jason has always been somewhat of a hero on my eyes and this book does him justice in that respect. It is, in respect to a brutal and ego filled industry, always refreshing to hear stories of people who worked hard, who got through rejection after rejection and were eventually rewarded.

David Jason is regarded as one of the greatest TV actor that has existed and to hear that, pretty much up until his 40s, his jobs were supplemented with electrician jobs and varying days of uncertainty is a great reminder of the non linear and ever un predictable nature of the creative journey.

Noone remembers David Jason's career for its failures. In fact, I'm sure noone could even name one, so hear Jason himself speaking so candidly, so modestly and with all the humour you would expect, is a delightfully inspiring read.

Now I’ve finished reading this book I don’t know an awful lot more about David Jason’s career than before I read it! There’s some nice anecdotes but there’s so much waffle that holds them together. The print in this hardback edition is quite big, so if you took out the waffle, reduced the font size, you’d be left with a slim paperback! A disappointing read.

Bounces all over the place and is repetitive quite a bit. Wish I had enjoyed this more than I did.

Not a autobiography. David already wrote that. This is more a series of life lessons taken from anecdotes in his life. For example, "More things have happened in your life than you have taken the time to notice."

David Jason is 80 at the start of the book. Lockdown is just coming in. What's a bloke to do when he's used to being busy. So he takes to writing. I am glad he did. His life is fascinating. And he gives so many insights into how the world of acting actually works. We just see the final product, for good or ill. But there's so much that goes on behind the scenes. For instance, there were three endings filmed to the last episode of Frost and the actors didn't know which version was chosen until it went out. Can you imagine the suspense! And poor Johnny Lyons didn't get to see it because he was appearing on stage that evening. Anyway, I like to hear about how these things come together, David, Terry Jones and Jon Pertwee bonded over being suspended above the stage as flying policemen. Or the joys of the Only Fools And Horses fan club. Or how he managed to grow a grapefruit tree out of a pip from his breakfast. If you enjoy stories, this is the book for you. I hope you enjoy it too.

A great read! This book is an easy going, well paced and enjoyable account of the actors life. The book highlights some wonderful moments, with some interesting points in relation to the times when his career does not always go to plan. A highly recommended book to read.

An insight into some of the decisions David Jason made during his career. Not a full autobiography but more a key review on the major times in his life, how he got there and the lessons he learnt at each of those key moments.

I really enjoyed this but not quite as much as a previous book of his that I read. I liked the way he quite seamlessly went between current day to way back to even before he started his acting career. It felt like sitting down and chatting to an older friend or relative.

I wanted to note that I listened to this on audiobook and disappointingly David Jason only narrates the introduction. The narrator did a great job but it would have been more entertaining had David narrated the whole book. This did not affect my star rating.

It’s strange when you think about the threads of continuity in your life. Sometimes these threads are obvious: family members, places, traditions. Others are less conspicuous. David Jason is a thread of continuity in my life I’ve not recognised before, but he has been there in the background - in various guises - the whole time: Danger Mouse, Count Duckula, Open All Hours, Only Fools, Darling Buds, Frost. His work has woven bonds of connection to my brothers, my mother, my husband, my children, and I am sure this is true for many British people.

This book is a funny and warm walkthrough of Jason’s life and career and what really resonates with me is his positivity. As someone who is more pessimist than optimist, I found his resilience and humour infectious. He rolls with the punches, rides the twists and turns and is grateful for both the losses and gains in life. Throughout the book Jason refers to various lessons, but I think this lesson is the biggest overall.

This is the perfect read for life in lockdown.

I’m not a huge biography fan or come to that a David Jason fan ordinarily but my husband had this book for Christmas and I decided to give it a go.
How glad I am that I did!

The book flows so well with Jason’s easy style and I really believe that this was written by him not a ghost writer.

His reflections all come with positive outcomes even when on the surface life was not going his way. A lesson for us all me thinks?!

I love his attitude to his career and acting in general and the fact that he is not in anyway up himself! In fact the book conveys that he is truly a gentle man and a perfect Gentleman.

Of course Only Fools and Horses is etched into everyone’s hearts as a National Treasure but the book has inspired me to take a look at Jason’s back catalogue of performances, in particular Porterhouse Blue and Darling Buds of May.

This book has been uplifting and a real tonic from the gloom of COVID- Thank you David.

Always enjoyed him on TV, but reading this book is a struggle.
He seems to pick a banal subject and string it out for three pages
3 stars because I feel sorry for him!

A few Ancedotes but not much else. This is not an autobiography - it's just a few memories but not in any depth. Very light read .. a bit repetitive. I was hoping for much more.

David Jason, one of Britain’s most cherished actors, offers readers a heartfelt and humorous glimpse into his life in A Del of a Life: Lessons I've Learned. This memoir is not just a recollection of his career highlights, but a thoughtful reflection on the experiences and values that have shaped him.

Rather than following a strict chronological path, Jason structures the book around key lessons and personal insights. From his early days as an electrician to becoming a household name through roles like Del Boy in Only Fools and Horses, he shares stories that are both entertaining and inspiring. His writing style is warm and conversational, making readers feel as though they’re chatting with an old friend.

What stands out most is Jason’s humility. Despite his fame, he remains grounded, often poking fun at himself and expressing genuine gratitude for the opportunities he’s had. The anecdotes—whether about working with comedy legends or growing a grapefruit tree from a breakfast pip—are told with charm and wit.

Written during the COVID-19 lockdown, the book also touches on themes of resilience and introspection. Jason reflects on the importance of kindness, laughter, and staying curious, offering gentle wisdom that feels especially relevant in uncertain times.

While some readers might wish for more behind-the-scenes drama or deeper dives into specific roles, the memoir’s strength lies in its simplicity and sincerity. It’s less about celebrity and more about character—both on and off screen.

Final Verdict
A Del of a Life is a delightful read for fans of British television and anyone who appreciates a life well-lived. David Jason’s blend of humour, honesty, and heart makes this memoir a comforting and uplifting experience.

I’ve had this book on my shelf for a few months now, and it’s one which is easy to keep picking up and dipping in and out of. David Jason holds a fond place in my heart, being a particular favourite of my dear old dad who used to love rewatching episodes of Only Fools. Of course, we all did as well, I mean find me someone who doesn’t laugh at some of Del-Boy’s antics! This book, whilst not technically an autobiography, sees Sir David recount tales of his life and the lessons learnt from them. Written during the first Covid lockdown (and his 80th year), we hear about his rise to fame to where he is now. I loved hearing of his long-standing friendship and working relationship with Ronnie Barker, another particular favourite of mine!

As I was reading, I found myself searching online for video clips of programmes and events mentioned, laughing along with both the book and these clips as I went! Some moved me to tears with the fond memories they evoked, and I loved hearing of his Bafta awarded by Ronnie Barker, and then watching their obvious great friendship on the clip afterwards. Sir David Jason is without a doubt high up there with, not just the comedy greats, but the acting greats of our time. I consider myself lucky to have been around to watch many of his programmes the first time around, and then lucky enough again to be able to keep revisiting them over the years. This book is a funny and warm-hearted recollection of his life by the great man himself! Would definitely recommend.

'A Del of a Life' is a delightful autobiographical recounting from the esteemed actor David Jason, a man who has held a special place in my heart ever since a chance meeting during my school years.

One sunny morning, with a letter of consent from my parents tucked away, I found myself standing near the set of 'A Touch of Frost.' with my father. The anticipation was palpable as I awaited to meet the actor I had admired so much. When David Jason emerged, he graciously signed not only my keepsake, but also the letter from my parents, etching the memory deep in my heart. Reading his book felt like revisiting that unforgettable day.

Through the pages of 'A Del of a Life,' David Jason brings back the halcyon days of 'Only Fools and Horses.' This classic show, a staple of my younger years, was a gem of the BBC. The book revives the charm of those times, reminding us of why Jason's work remains timeless.

The book offers fresh perspectives on Jason's journey, carefully avoiding repetition from his previous works. It's an engaging narrative filled with unique anecdotes and insights that deepen our appreciation of his life and career.

Jason's writing style is accessible and engaging, making the book a joy to read. However, while the book is immensely enjoyable, it misses the mark of the absolute 'FANTASTIC' books that hold a rare 5-star rating in my collection.

'A Del of a Life' is a worthwhile read, deserving a solid 4 out of 5 stars. It might not compete with the absolute best, but it's a heartwarming and captivating journey nonetheless. This book is a treasure trove of delightful tales for fans of David Jason or captivating autobiographies.

This is David Jason's third book of memoirs and as such it may raise a few eyebrows. Is it needed? It's not actually an autobiography he's done that with 'My Life' this is more of a series of stories and anecdotes. He looks back at some of the many characters he's played of course looking at Del Boy from Only Fools And Horses as well as shows such as The Darling Buds Of May and Frost as well as others.

Some of the material to be honest is repeated from previous volumes but Jason is always a delight to read. The tone is conversational and its like talking with an old friend. It's an easy read and with lots of humour not surprisingly. He talks about his time as a struggling actor and brings it right up to date with life during lockdown.

Like his friend and mentor Ronnie Barker, Jason is most comfortable when he's hiding behind a character. He's quite open about that, he's not comfortable being himself in public and perhaps there may be some of that hiding behind a character in the book. Is this the real David Jason? Maybe to a degree, maybe it's the version of him he wants us to know.

So maybe if you're being critical you could make the argument that there isn't really a need for another volume of memoirs but to be honest David Jason is a joy to read if you're a fan of his work and I couldn't give it any less that 4 stars.

David Jason wrote this book to relieve the boredom during lockdown, it cannot be classed as a masterpiece but it is a humorous, frank and honest account of Jason’s life. He comes across as humble, decent and likeable guy just as you would expect of a national treasure. He is honest enough to admit he has had to work hard for his success which didn’t come easy.

He spent much of his early acting life in local rep and pantomime, he missed out on parts in Dad’s Army and Monty Python before his breakthrough when he got the part of Granville in Open All Hours although this didn’t take off straightaway. He is of course, best known as Derek (Del Boy) Trotter in Only Fools and Horses which again took until the third series to take off and he expresses his admiration for his co-stars and the wonderful writer John Sullivan who all played their part in making it such a success.

David Jason is a workaholic, he reminds us a number of times that he is the fourth hardest working actor in the country. At 80 years old he is still not looking to retire any time soon.

A good, easy read which leaves you with a smile on your face.

In this humble yet entertaining memoir , David Jason recounts the highs and lows of his life and career. It was interesting to learn about his humble beginnings, hailing from a family who like many others in post-war Britain were accustomed to a life of frugal simplicity. Jason recounts his earlier career as an electrian, which he relied on to sustain himself between early acting jobs. He fondly recounts having a great time driving to customer’s houses with his work colleague and friend - for many it will be easy to see the parallels between this real life experience and his role as Del Boy in which driving a three wheel van with his brother, is pretty much the defining image of the entire series.
Reflections on Covid-19 and the frustration of lockdown are also covered in this memoir. The humour and dad jokes with which most of the memoir is peppered, serve an especially important function in a section dealing with such a sombre topic.
Overall, this book stands in stark contrast with the genres I usually read but it was a refreshing and enjoyable foray into something different.
