Bad! I almost didn't finish. The characters were not only one dimensional but unlikable.

The Duke was okay. The heroine was the worst. She was immature and annoying. She dresses badly to dissuade fortune hunters but lacks spirit to stand up to her mother. The mother I disliked the most. She was suppose to be nice but was on her daughter every time she opened her mouth. The h and H have no chemistry and never actually have even a real conversation.

The villians are just as bad. Both have ridiculous reasons. You learn this early bc the author let's you know who the villians are and from the beginning leaving any mystery to the plot. The why is bc the hero's brother was a dishonorable rake and slept with the wrong ppl. Really? Let's kill his family for that. Then they go after the h bc the H fixed her glasses at a ball ... must be love so let's kill her.

The problems in this book are too numerous to count. Glad it was free!

I felt like there was an interesting book here trying to get out. It was just buried under too much repetition and social etiquette.
This is one of those reviews that’s a nightmare to write. Because I have such mixed feelings on this.

Firstly I liked the idea behind this and for the most part I liked the characters. I wanted them to end up together which means they kept me invested that much.

I just felt too much time and space was given to social etiquette. I know it plays a large part in the events of this book. And for that matter a huge part of life in the ton but ultimately this is a romance and I got bored. It’s not a text book and therefore it needed to flow more.

Also I was fed up of hearing how much Jared Malcolm Lippincott, the Sixth Duke of Wyndmere hated being the Sixth Duke of Wyndmere.

The first half was relatively slow paced and that’s fine it’s setting the scene. But then the second half felt like a race to finish. I don’t want to make this a spoiler review. So I’ll just say what I felt should have been the most romantic moment in the book. Was definitely spoilt by other circumstances. It didn’t need to happen on the same day.

There’s potential here it just, in my opinion needs cutting in places and sharpening up. The pacing needs adjusting as well with more pages given to the later chapters.

I’m giving 3* which is generous but I did enjoy parts of this and I strongly feel it wouldn’t take too much to sort it.

💋

This book was pleasing to read with great characters.

I found the beginning a little slow for my tastes, but it not boring, and it didn’t put me off.

The storyline really picks up around the halfway mark for me and from then on I was hooked.
I enjoyed the story and the interesting characters that had some wonderful personalities.

I can see the others getting their own stories soon , and I will definitely read those.

I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to post this review

Regency, Social Graces, and Mystery

This is the first book in a new series, The Lords of Vice, which is set in Historical London during The Season. There is not a lot of romance in the story the MCs hardly spend time together or get to know each other very well throughout much of the book.

Instead

Jared is the second son who was never meant to be Duke. Things happened and he is now The Duke, having to learn to navigate society as a Duke, and try to restore his family’s standing amongst the fickle members of The Ton. It is pretty much his reason for existence through much of the story.

So, not a lot of romance. Definitely no wooing. No stolen kisses or courting involved. Just a rapid,

The marriage of course leads to the wedding night & again there was an overall lack of heat portrayed. Very little detail given of the marriage bed activity.

On top of these things there was added conflict and some mystery added to the storyline. In my opinion the overall story would have been much better if this aspect was left out. It didn’t add to the storyline, nor did it help to develop characters, it just took more away from the relationship of the two MC.

I was really quite annoyed by Lady Persephone throughout 90% of the story. Her character was shallow, childish, and overall rather annoying. I got sick of her antics very quickly. Her only saving grace was that after she becomes The Duchess of Wyndmere, she miraculously decided to grow up. Before the marriage I was hoping she would retire to the country and never be heard from again.

Despite the lack of romance, lack of heat, lack of chemistry, and the silly villains in the story - I would have rated the story a 3 star read. However, the abrupt ending and lack of epilogue (my pet peeve) took the story to a 2-star.

If you want to add some fun while reading this story - count the cups of tea that are served, I am sure it happens on every other page. Sooo much tea. I almost wanted to drown Persephone in her tea!! We get it! The English apparently would die without tea.

More Tea!!

Let’s have some tea!!

Oh look, more Tea!!!

I am either a masochist or just curious to see if the next book can save the series. We shall see!

Lady Persephone was determined to detract attention from herself. Simply by dressing in the most hideous colors and wearing her think glasses. Bluestocking extraordinaire. She would not marry a man who just wanted her dowry. When Jared, the new Duke of Wyndmere pushed her glasses back up her nose after she bumped into him... well...

Meanwhile, Jared was trying to clear the name of his family since his brother had ruined their name by being a wastrel and having died at the hand of a mad husband. But it seemed that Jared and Persephone's lives were about to become entwined!

A fun story that will keep you reading to see what will happen!

Where it all began. The beginning of the series that’s grown into 8 other novels and 1 novella.
I loved Jared, the new Duke of Wyndham’s meeting with Lady Persephone. What no-one realizes is that Jared and his family have a target on their backs drawn by some disgruntled members of the ton. Our introduction to the Duke’s guard as well.

I love CH Admirand’s books. This book was filled with heart and family and the chemistry between the Hero and Heroine was lovely. A perfect escape from reality which is exactly what I love in a book.

Jared Malcolm Lippincott never expected to become the Sixth Duke of Wyndmere but his elder brother led a life of debauchery & paid the ultimate price. Jared has managed to has restored the family fortune after all he loves working on the dukedoms estates. Now he needs to restore the family name but an unknown enemy will stop at nothing to ruin him. Lady Persephone does not wish to marry, cleverly donning the guise of a bespectacled bluestocking to discourage offers of marriage. This is the first book I’ve read by the author & also the start of a new series. There was much I liked about the book especially when the pace quickened in the second half. I loved both Jared & Persephone & thoroughly enjoyed their journey to their HEA. I also liked the secondary characters & there are some who I’d love to have their own story. Whilst the book was well written it did get bogged down in etiquette & I’m not sure if all the tea trays were a little tongue in cheek? There were also quite a few Americanisms which could have easily have been changed. Overall an enjoyable read which did hold my interest all the way through
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

I am a little bit confused about what to say about the book.

It wasn't a bad book. No problematic stuff which is something I always see authors putting in their book. I didn't find the duke disrespectful or arrogant. I also found Persephone character interesting.

But there was unnecessary build up on the book which led to ultimately nowhere. The plot was a bit obvious. Also I swear every time some important discussion was about to occur, someone would enter with the freaking tea. I also didn't need to know how the carriage had to go away because the horses became restless when it isn't important to the plot.

But as I mentioned, the book romance wise was okay. It didn't blow me away. I would have liked some more interactions, may be a little bit of banter. But you should definitely give a chance. Specially for the fans of historical romance, this is a must-read book.

I have a feeling there will be companion novels which I am really looking forward to. We were given some hint and I am excited for it.

I usually read contemporary romance or women's fiction. I first found this author by being attracted to one of her small town romance book covers a few years ago. After I read that book, I then began reading the other books she had written. I like her writing style, but honestly never thought I would like to read historical fiction.

I saw that C. H. Admirand had released a new historical romance series and with all the issues in the world, I thought that reading a series that would bring me totally out of the current situation would be a nice escape. That was a great decision. I honestly am very surprised at how much I enjoyed this first book in the series. The characters are created so well that I cared about them immediately. The plot was flowed easily with a slow build of a romance and a mystery and ended with a resolution that was very believable.

I am looking forward to continuing this series and have already purchased books 2 and 3.

2.5-3 Stars! This was a very drawn out story with a pretty abrupt and anti-climatic ending. I did enjoy bits and pieces of this book but it couldn’t keep my attention for long. I also found this book confusing at times and was often wondering why the characters were angry, “vexed”, or offended so often. I don’t even want to get started on ‘Martha’ and her part of the story! It’s a good story but could be so much better.

I wanted to like this so much, but it was just bad. It was badly written. The characters were shallow and unlikeable. The story meandered all over the place and was difficult to follow. An over abundance of detail about trivial things made it cumbersome and slow moving. The characters were constantly speaking out loud to themselves, which made no sense. Also, the word “mayhap” was used on about every other page, which got annoying. I couldn’t even finish the book.

DNF 12%. Which one is Jared and which is Edward? Why is the younger brother more knowledgeable about being a duke?

A bit convoluted and confusing. There were many times throughout the story that I was lost and didn't understand the point of what was happening. The mystery surrounding them seemed like it should have been solved easily since they knew who was behind it very quickly. There was a lot of rushing around and him ordering people about. Persephone barely interacts with the duke before they are married. The blurb is also kind of deceptive since they don't enter into a marriage of convenience until 80% and they don't seem to get along at all. They don't understand each other's personalities or share a similar humor so they spend a bit of time offending each other and making conversation that I could not seem to follow or understand the purpose of. The ending felt rushed and ridiculous. ***spoiler*** why would he attack them at a ball surrounded by a hundred guests? So he would get his "revenge" but then he would be killed for trying to kill a duchess and a duke's family. It makes literally no sense that he would try to do it that way. The build up to this was also confusing. So many times they would use circumstances that happened to believe someone was out to get them. Rumors and someone running into you are not reasons to believe someone is going to try to kill you. Most of the story seemed to be something so complex that I felt like the author forgot to write down at least have of her thoughts that were suppose to explain what happened. Sorry for going on for so long, this was just one of the weirdest stories i've ever read. I feel bad only leaving a 1 star review but this book needs some major renovation. I hope other people understood it and enjoyed it more.

My Rating - 1.5/5

The sixth Duke, Jared wanted to restore his family's reputation after his older brother, the fifth Duke ruined it and died. He asked his brother, Edward's assistance and cooperation as well because along with their duty, they have a sister to look after. On the other hand, Persephone's mother wanted to find a gentleman for her daughter to marry. Persephone's father died which is why she's now responsible for her daughter who didn't wish to marry. After Persephone met the Duke both of them quite liked each other. But after facing some unfortunate consequences by the Duke's enemies, Jared wanted to protect her and so he asked her hand in marriage. They got married and faced problems because of their enemies but got their happy ending. At least for now. Because I'm assuming there will be more books in this series.

My feelings -

-I liked Persephone and her mother's relationship They had a close bond with each other. Both of them were kind to their workers as well.
-Repetition about some topics irritated the hell outta me. Like it was mentioned in almost every chapter that he was the sixth Duke, nothing like his brother who ruined their reputation blah blah blah... We get it, now move on already. Don't have to remind us on every chapter. Ugh!
-Jared behaves like he had no idea about dukedom even though his father was a Duke. They were poor for awhile but it didn't mean he had to be clueless about everything. He saw his father but didn't learn a single thing? It seemed a little unreal the way he behaved. I didn't find him authoritative or confident at all.
-For fuck's sake, I really don't care about everyone's whining about the Duke's broken nose. Why make a big fuss about it if you knew how to do boxing before? It's like he was hurt for the first time. I don't have any interest reading pages after pages about your broken nose. Botheration.
-Again, there's too much unnecessary talking about unnecessary stuff. The conversations seemed robotic.
-Jared was informed about Lady Hampton but when he got a threatening letter by Lady H. he sent his guards to follow the messenger to find out about her. I mean WTF? It was quite predictable that it was Hampton. Is he stupid? Her initial was even same.
-This book needed a strong plot and characters. But we got so many unnecessary stuff, stupid villains and stupid main characters. Heck, the romance aspect didn't even start until 80% of the book. Disappointment is what I'm feeling after reading this.
-I liked Coventry and O'Malleys.
-Jared and Persephone's wedding night was frustrating. I was like 'What the heck am I reading?' There's no connection between them.
-Persephone was rude to Phoebe and vice versa.

So I can safely say, I've read way better historical romance book than this. Not interested in reading other books of this series or the author. As neither I didn't like the writing style nor what this book offered. So why bother? Sorry if I'm being harsh but I'm not gonna apologize for my opinion. Because I don't like to lie in my reviews.

Series: Lords of Vice

Book 1 - Mending the Duke’s Pride
The reviews were correct - WAY TOO MANY WORDS. And it’s not like they’re meaningful or even descriptive.
Just repetitive.
Unnecessary.
What’s the point??
Get to the point!!

Now get past ALLLL that and the storyline had a decent premise BUT you have to get past ALLLL that. I am writing this review at chapter 22,000 because -
1. They have yet to confront the villains - who by the way are trifling miserable excuses of sorriness who should be shot and thrown into that nasty river that runs through London.
2. (This is the bloodthirsty me) Should have spent more time on how the poor little lady maids were sidetracked and tricked into going with the thug and actually WHY? Truthfully, they had one job….
3. The story really doesn’t bring the characters together.
4. Not sure whether I’m going to finish the book except my OCD won’t allow me not to….
5. Still a little confused about the series title “Lords of Vice”. The “vicey” lord (Duke #5),
who created the mess, is hopefully receiving his just desserts in the afterlife. The other guys were trying to fix his mess.
I wish this was written and edited better because it really has potential. Right now it’s just a headache. This is my first read of this author, hopefully the series gets better. Not sure I have the heart or patience to continue the series to find out. I’m going to have to take a deep breath and a break before attempting to tackle any more of the series.

I have a complex about finishing books. I try not to DNF books really really hard but sometimes it's just not possible. I really tried to read this book al the way through properly but it just so hard. Everyone talks about that feeling when you're reading a good book and the words disappear and you find yourself immersed in the story. I had the opposite experience reading this book. Every page stretched so long and I'm pretty sure I gave myself a headache trying to muddle through the word swamp.

Things I liked (meh): Persephone and Lady Farnsworth relationship to each other and their relationship to their staff.

Things I didn't like: basically everything. The Duke was so irritatingly whiny and the repetition of his title was a little too much. If I drank, I'd start a drinking game where I take a short every time "the newly minted Sixth Duke of Wyndmere" was mentioned. Or maybe I'd take the shot every time someone said "dash it all!" To be fair, I really did try to ge through this book. I read about 25% properly before I couldn't take it anymore and had to start skimming (skipping) for my own sanity. The pacing of the story was just too slow and all the character interactions were so tedious and felt overly contrived. I'm actually pretty bummed I didn't like this more because I feel like there could have been something here, if the Sixth Duke of Wyndmere would just get over himself.

I did not like this book at all. The characters were not likeable. There was no romance. The sex scene at the end made me cringe. The villains' motives and actions made no sense. I don't think I will be reading the next book in the series.

Mending the Duke's Pride by C.H. Admirand is a charmingly different novel about a convoluted hatred for a family who is innocent of wrong doing and the duke's efforts to protect his loved ones as well as a young woman who has come to his attention as part of this plot. It's a perfectly wonderful love story as well as a chase after those who wish him harm. Jared Martin Lippincott, the Sixth Duke of Wyndmere had never intended to be duke. He was the second son, the spare, never to replace his father as the head of the family. That was to be his brother, Oliver, who in his short time as duke managed to nearly bankrupt the family and get himself murdered. This after a score of affairs with married women, more drink than was manageable, and many nights spent at the gaming tables and losing. Now it was up to Jared to make it all right and save his younger brother, Edward, from following in Oliver's footsteps. Persephone Farnsworth was a lovely young woman who got embroiled in this mess purely accidentally. She was an innocent, about to be ruined, until the duke stepped in to be sure that would not happen, drawing the villain's attention to her.

Jared is an honorable man, thinking only of his family at every turn. Persephone is a young woman looking for a husband, well, her mother is doing it for her. Her father, before he died, had promised that if she found no one she wanted by the end of the season, she could retire to the country and take her dowry with her. Her mother had no intention of honoring that promise, willing to marry her off to anyone who offered, no matter how old. The only requirement was that he not be a fortune hunter. Persephone was naive and trusting. She was not interested in men, until Jared came along. This was a very entertaining and simple romance. There was sex but it was definitely secondary and fairly brief. It was an enchanting story of a man who could manage what had been given him and dealt with others carefully. It was nicely written: the plot was good and the pacing was right on. It left the reader with a happy heart. I recommend it.

I honestly didn't know what to do with this book. By the 30% mark - the hero and heroine had met once and he had only touched the corner of her fake glasses. By the 50% mark they had danced in the moonlight - but hadn't exchanged more than a few words. By the 70% mark they were married. Like what? But for some reason I couldn't stop reading it.

There is a lot going on for both characters - but despite her words of being bold and non-traditional, Persephone is very much on the traditional end of things - as is Jared. They are both kind to others and clearly care for their staff like family - but they stick to traditional gender roles like glue. Their courtship is very much on the side of historical accuracy - but didn't feel particularly romantic to me.

Jared has been fighting to get his family name out of the gutter - after his older brother thoroughly trashed it and the family finances. His brother was shot by his lover's angry husband in her bedroom. Another young (married) woman killed herself after he abandoned for that other woman. As a result the spouses of the deceased have vowed to get revenge on Jared and his family. This was a very interesting storyline - for all that the people behind it clearly were totally wackadoo. Unfortunately - most of the investigation into the events and what is really going on - happens off the page. we hear about it - but even the final plot is somewhat a mystery.

Persephone is old for regency marriage market standards - 22 - but she is still very naive and innocent (and pretty spoiled). She clearly struggles with the rules of society - which seems understandable given the way she has been sheltered. This book gives maybe a more honest picture of the true life of a debutante than a lot of historicals do. The constant changes in clothing, the lack of privacy, the lack of self-determination.

Overall - I liked this book - and I didn't. I wanted more time spent between Jared and Persephone. I wanted more details on the investigation. If you like your regencies on the traditional side - this would be a good one for you!

I received this as an ARC from NetGalley, but these opinions are all my own.

If you scroll through my blog you’ll see that my historical reading is extremely limited. To be fair, what is on my blog does NOT my entire reading repertoire, but I think the percentage balance (if one were into statistics and good at numbers which I am not) is pretty accurately reflective of my reading choices. However, every so often I get an itch for a good historical and Mending the Duke’s Pride absolutely called to that desire.

It’s been well established that I love broken boys and our Duke Jared? He has definitely been through some things that make him quite fitting for that roll. All wrapped up with nightmares of his siblings being trapped in the debtors prison he had to free them from. Not only did he have to rescue them there, he also had to bring respect, honor, and wealth back to the title he now held.

Persephone has basically zero desire to marry. At all. It really isn’t a personal slight against Jared, she just isn’t a fan of the M word. She does her best to lessen the chances of any member of the ton wanting her by dressing down in purposefully unflattering clothes and glasses. However, as historical romances do so well, she is forced into an arranged union with Jared. All part and parcel of restoring good standing to his title.

I thoroughly enjoyed the read love how Ms. Admirand set up the series, giving just enough of each subsequent character to entice you to want to read their stories. The romance, however, was a bit lost and I didn’t feel that spark until the second half of the book. Mending the Duke’s Pride felt a bit more like a historical fiction read than a historical romance. Once things kicked into gear, though, the tension, the pull, and the desire was obvious and endearing.

If you enjoy historical romances with intricate details into the lives people lived in the past, you should pick up a copy of Mending the Duke’s Pride. It’s a delightful read that transports you in time and sets you down in a much more decadent time.

Revenge?

When a person has revenge in mind they loose all reason! Jared is a reluctant Duke preferring the country and overseeing the estates! Persephone seems a bit of a hoyden and much too annoying about some matters more than others! This story is somewhat a slow roll but when it takes off....wow! Jared older brother dies in a duel over a married woman but also gambled and lived a life of debauchery and vice! Having read thousands of historical books from this period I thought the censure for Jared touching Persephone glasses extreme!?
Persephone took advantage of her mother inability to see color to wear hideous and extremely ugly colors! This was very odd to me as only men are color blind!?? Some of the things Persephone did at age 22 she should have known better? She initially married to be needed? Umm he's rich, handsome even if she didn't care that he was a Duke there was also a secret waltz?
There was too much murder and mayhem in this story the plot was just too much? A peer of the realm especially a Duke and then Duchess by someone of his rank? Don't want to give too much away and his female partner just disappears and no questions asked?
There is humour in this story and the love of siblings! This author is brand new so would like to read more in the series.....

Jared & Persephone meet - and the Duke’s Guard is created

This is the first in the Lords of Vice series but it also acts as a curtain raiser to the Duke’s Guard series as this is were we discover the background to the reasons for its creation.

Jared Lippincott has become the 6th Duke of Wyndmere, following the death of his brother (who was shot by the husband of one of his lovers - the husband then shot himself).

Jared has worked hard to restore the family coffers and is tying to restore the good name it had under his father (the 4th Duke).

Persephone has been trying to put off fortune hunting suitors by wearing ugly gowns and donning spectacles at society events.

It is at one of these that Jared instinctively helps adjust them when the become askew. This is observed and rumours start to fly!

The widow of the man who murdered Jared’s brother and the man who had been her lover before being supplanted by him plot to do as much damage to both Jared and Persephone.

I enjoyed the gradual development of the relationship between all the characters - this includes members of the families and the household staffs.

I am looking forward to reading the rest of this series as well as the author’s other Regency set books.

Ill-prepared to take on the duties of the Dukedom, Jared Lippincott has his hands full trying to restore the damage done by his dissolute brother, who sowed devastation and shame on the family name. Rescuing his siblings from debtors' prison was one thing, but restoring their good standing in society takes discipline and careful planning. Unfortunately, not everyone agrees with Jared, as he still has to face the fallout of the havoc wrecked by his brother. Bumping into the bluestocking Lady Persephone, who hides behind clothing of an unfortunate colour and wearing spectacles that she can barely see through, Jared finds himself intrigued and when Persephone is swept up into his problems, there is only one recourse. This novel has a good plot and is generally free of typos and other errors, however, it is extremely verbose, sometimes leaving the reader behind in the long-winded and repetitive passages. The last quarter of this romance is worth waiting for, and the novel does come to a positive conclusion. I received a copy of this book as a gift through NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.

Mending the Duke's Pride (The Lords of Vice Book. 1) C. H. Admirand

This book is a well written story of a young duke Jared trying to reclaim the damage done to the family by his brother Oliver the fifth duke of Weymere. Jared is a much more caring person about the estates and families working for him. He is concerned for his younger brother and sister, wanting to secure a good marriage for Pheobe. A chance encounter with a lovely young lady dressed in a ugly colored gown, he is quite taken with her. Danger and threats against he and his family, cause him to seek guards, Bow Street Runners etc. To protect those he loves. He realizes he needs a wife to help his sister though a successful season in London, he asks for Persephone's hand in marriage. Threats and danger is constantly lurking at every corner, even when they have their first ball to celebrate their marriage and his sister's coming out. Between his guard and His Street Runner the culprit is apprehended, after the Vicount holds a knife to Pheobe and injures his bother. The duke and success realize how much in love they are and look to their future together.

Jared Malcolm Lippincott, the Sixth Duke of Wyndmere the second son has inherited a title he didn’t want and a dynasty ruined by his brother’s actions. He feels it’s up to him to restore the coffers and the family reputation, the problem is he doesn’t know how to be a Duke. He meets Lady Persephone does not wish to marry and adjusts her glasses after she stumbles and then leaves the ball. Setting her up to be his new love interest to those wanting to harm him and his family. Persephone has been trying everything she can think of to avoid marriage, but now in the middle of another new scandal and the Duke has offered to help her. When he finds out her life is in danger because of him there’s nothing he won’t do to stop the culprit with a vendetta. What to do with a Duke who knows nothing about how to get along in society and a wallflower society maiden who doesn’t want to get along in society. I love them together it was a fun and enjoyable read. I have voluntarily read and reviewed this excellent story.
