Crown MMA Romance #2

Fighter's Best Friend

Rate this book
They say the best lovers start as friends. Too bad I’m head-over-heels for my broody best friend but he’s completely oblivious.

I’ve been crazy about MMA fighter Gabe Mendoza for most of my life, and he has no idea. As a doctor, I should be too smart to fall for someone who’s bound to break my heart, but love doesn’t care about logic.

I’m tired of pining for someone who’s married to his job, but Gabe begs for a chance with me just as I’m finally ready to look for love elsewhere.

He’s never put me first before, so how can I trust him to fight for our happily ever after? Is our relationship doomed before it even begins?

I don't know if it's the patriarchy that just won't fuck off in my brain, but did the h's demands seems a little unreasonable when this is the biggest fight of the H's career?
I'm honestly conflicted because yeah, sure, he took her for granted when they were still just friends which is pretty shitty but she was judging his behaviour on that instead of his stellar attitude since they got together.
The dude stepped up and I can't tell if she was justified in dropping him at the first hurdle.
...
Someone please tell me if the patriarchy's making me an unreasonable monster or not because I can't tell anymore!

Ps. I unknowingly read this before the first book and my OCD brain is furious.
FURIOUS.

I am so into this series and with Fighter's Best Friend it just gets better.

This friends to lovers romance will run your emotions through them all but in the best possible way. Gabe and Sydney have been friends forever. Gabe has always put his MMA career above all else and Sydney has never come out on top with anyone. When everything shifts and these two finally take that chance sparks will fly.

I wasn't sure about Gabe and his treatment of Sydney but when you read more about him he definitely turned it around for me! I loved Sydney's character and how much she went for putting herself first. Even though Gabe was a huge presence in her life she let him know what her mind.

I definitely recommend starting with Fighter's Heart. We are introduced to all the characters and also it's a great book. Looking forward to the next one - that epilogue has me so excited!

Having finished Fighter’s Heart, I dove straight into my arc of Fighter’s Best Friend, Sydney and Gabe’s story which had been hinted throughout book one. It’s a best friends to lovers MMA romance between doctor Sydney and MMA fighter Gabe, who have a rocky road from friendship to their HEA.

Sydney has had feelings for her childhood best friend Gabe for years, but knows that his first love is MMA, and whatever relationship they have, whether it’s romantic or platonic, would always take a backseat to his career. She decides she’s done waiting for him to see her in a different light and pursues internet dating, which upset Gabe because although he’s always told himself he’d step out of the way once Sydney found someone, when the situation actually happens, he finds it difficult to follow through. When it looks like he might lose her for good, will he step up and finally make a move, and if it came down to it, would he choose his relationship with her over the biggest MMA fight of his career?

These characters pushed me through the emotional ringer, because they had this long-lasting friendship which both were terrified of affecting, but neither of their feelings were platonic anymore. There was this internal conflict in both of them, to pursue these feelings and risk it all, risk losing someone so important or to just sort of hope they went away, through ignoring them or finding someone else. But it was so clear early on that would never happen, and I enjoyed every page even though there were times I wanted to shake Gabe because how can a man be that clueless!? He has this incredible woman in front of him, asking for his love and to be prioritised by him, which to be honest isn’t asking much, and it takes him so long to have this realisation that there is more to life than his career. I really liked his evolution though, from the one-track minded fighter to a man who was willing to find balance between his career and his personal life, someone who learnt the importance of both. But that didn’t mean he didn’t deserve a smack at a couple of points because of how he acted.

Sydney was so great from page one, even though she wanted Gabe, she knew what she deserved and wouldn’t settle for less. It was the right move for her because it showed her who else was out there and only solidified her feelings for Gabe, but she made him work for it in the end, not giving in easily. Her strength was admirable, she could’ve so easily given in to so much and just gone with it, but she knew exactly how she wanted to be treated, and made sure Gabe knew. She didn’t want to change him, she just wanted him to change for his own reasons, and to see that he could have both, the MMA and her, but he had to treat her better, or she’d walk.

Once again, A Rivers inserted this behind the scenes insight into the MMA world which was amazing, I felt like I learned so much and it’s clear that A Rivers knows her stuff. It was so detailed, like I was there in the gym training with the boys. I loved the boy’s dynamic; they were like true brothers and the hint of Devon’s love interest next has only intrigued me. Sydney and Lena’s friendship was so brilliant, how they could lean on each other, and I can’t wait to see who the third woman in their trio will be, because once she arrives, the three of them are going to be constantly keeping those Crown Heart men on their toes. I will be adding A Rivers’ books to my must-read list from now on, Fighter’s Best Friend was such a great read!

Gabe and Sydney are childhood best friends who started seeing each other in a different light years ago. But they haven't had the courage to cross the line from best friends to lovers.

Sydney is a surgical resident and Gabe is a professional MMA fighter, so their schedules don't exactly align. It's difficult for them to find the time to hang out. Gabe overworks himself and often fails to show up when he's made a commitment. And Sydney is tired of waiting for him. So she decides it's time to get back into the dating pool.

Gabe and Sydney have both dated different people in high school and college, but their personal dating lives have been at a standstill for a while now. For obvious reasons. When Sydney starts going on dates, Gabe is forced to realize that he can no longer hold himself back from her.

The main conflict here is that Gabe is unable to make time for Sydney. He's determined to please all of his loved ones, even if it drives him to exhaustion. He is stuck between overtraining to make his dad's dreams come true vs. committing to the promises he made to Sydney.

Sydney is 💯 correct when she tells Gabe he is overworking himself and that he has an unhealthy work/life balance. But there are a few times when Sydney is also unreasonable with her requests. Yes, Gabe needs to stop overworking himself, but he's trying! Sydney is very open with Gabe about her feelings, which I appreciated a lot. But there is a particular instance when Sydney was cryptic as hell and it made me want to shake her.

The conflict of not being able to adjust your schedule to spend time with your loved ones actually stressed me out 🤪🥴 Gabe being unable to attain a healthy work/life balance felt so real that I got secondhand stress 🥴 In my opinion, neither Gabe nor Sydney handles this conflict perfectly, but that's what made the story more interesting to read. It would have been boring if they were perfect characters 🤷🏽‍♀️ So the secondhand stress is worth it, I guess 😂

The writing style is a bit awkward at times, but nothing a better editor can't fix. I really liked the romance; Gabe and Sydney had great chemistry together, even when they frustrated me. It takes some time for them to finally cross that friendship line, but it's definitely worth the wait.

★. This was dumb. Sydney was mad that Gabe kept prioritizing his MMA career over her yet all we saw was that he was late for one dinner. She was just constantly telling him how HE had to be ALL about her and she had to come first before everything yet her job and everything could come first before him? Getting mad to the point you break up over him doing a fight to which he said he could still to the wedding just later was RIDICULOUS. He should’ve broke up with her instead of taking a three month break

If I liked the first book I'm in love with this one. I was so intrigued by the relationship that Gabe and Sydney have since we met them in book 1. The friends to lovers aspects to their story was so well written that it left me with a silly smile on my face.

I felt all the frustration that she felt. It broke my heart because I saw he was trying so hard to please everyone but ended up hurting Sydney the most. And I absolutely loved his grand gesture where he showed what and who means the most to him.

Now I can't wait to see how Devon will get his HEA because I have a filling he's in for a fight of his life.

This was my first book by this author and I enjoyed reading the story. This can easily be read as a stand-alone, even tho this book is part in an interconnected series.
It was a fast paced and quick read.
Gabe, MMA fighter, and Sydney, upcoming doctor, have known each Other for years and are best friends. Despite the fact both have feelings for each other unbeknownst to each other. You could feel the adoration they both have for each other.
Unfortunately I couldn’t really connect with Sydney tho. She was complaining a little bit too much for me, because she knows Gabe for a long time, knows how important fighting is for him, and how important training is shortly before a big fight comes up. And she’s an upcoming doctor, so being late because of work, taking over an extra shift is nothing new to her. So I’d have loved her to be a little more understandable!
Also, some parts could have had a bit more development (f.e. Ken’s part, Gabe’s not feeling well) but this is solely my opinion!!
All in all I did enjoy this book and read it in one sitting!

I loved Gabe and Sydney's story. After harboring romantic feelings for each for years, best friends Gabe and Sydney decide to give a relationship a try. I don't want to give up the whole plot but I couldn't put this one down. I was so invested in these characters. I wanted them to get their HEA. I also liked the secondary characters. This was my first read by this author but it definitely won't be the last!

I put 3/5 rating but kinda wanna give a 2.5/5. This was an OK read for me. It fell flat and I feel like I’ve ready stories with the same plot that was better.

It felt like there was a lot crammed into a short book making it seem fast paced but also felt drawn out at the end.

⚠️⚠️ SPOILERS AHEAD⚠️⚠️

Honestly the FMC, Sydney, kinda pissed me off. Yes good for her knowing what she deserved and wanted. But it was obvious she wanted Gabe since forever, but was so stuck on some things that could have been talked out and worked out instead she decided to just put Gabe through a bunch of shit even though it was obvious he felt horrible. Like her life is important to her, but it seemed like she wanted a stay at home boyfriend who magically had enough money to take care of themselves and always have time for her.

To me Gabe was doing his best. Not everyone is perfect and he had so many expectations put on him. As his best friend Syd should have been more understanding.

Also if you didn’t want him to take the fight Sydney he gave you plenty of chances to tell him that. He straight up asked you. He’s trying. Like Jesus, if you knew you would be that upset if he did the fight then you should have fucking said that to him when he asked you!

Gabe legit EXHAUSTED himself to please her and she as a resident, didn’t see the signs? Also on the topic of her being a resident, her hours aren’t easy to work with. He does his best.

Honestly Gabe deserved better in my opinion.

That’s all. Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.

Idk she annoyed me and her alone made me want to give this book 2 stars instead of 3.

Totally and utterly loved this book and all it's characters. I don't know what it was but the opening chapter of this book made me really cry. I don't know what triggered it. I thought it may have been my mood that day but I've since gone back and reread that chapter and I still get emotional. Although I did find this whole book filled and fuelled by emotions.

Gabe and Sydney already had a firm and strong friendship in the beginning. But see that its on shakey ground for reasons I won't tell. This book takes you through the events that change this relationship forever. Its not all hearts and flowers and certainly not all happy but it is beautiful, tough and eye opening for them both.

Do they take the leap, well I'm not saying. All I will say it's a great book. One I read in day as I just couldn't put it down. I hated that it was interrupted because I had to adult but every chance I got I picked it up. This is an emotional, fun and passion filled book. Where lines and friendships are blurred. Its a huge recommend from me. Can't wait for the next book in the series.

Honestly Sydney should have walked away as soon as he chose a fight over going the wedding with her like he promised. Especially knowing how strained her relationship is with her family. Then to just show up at the very end like Sydney should be thankful was way over the line. He had several chances before that, why she continued to put up with it is beyond me.

"Desire flares, impossibly hot, as our tongues tangles. He tastes of spicy and man - better than I ever imagined was possible - and I want to tumble to the floor and keep him there until I've satisfied my curiosity about whether every single part of him is just as delicious"

Gabe and Sydney have been best friends forever and they also have been in love with each other forever. But as Syd thinks this is a one sided thing, Gabe is sure he's no good to her. So they keep themselves in that comfortable zone until Syd decides that she wants more, and starts looking for a boyfriend.

I used to say that I didn't like romances with fighter heroes that much, but since I received the first arc by A. Rivers I think I can't say this anymore. Before her books, I always thought the heroes were too violent with everything and not only in his sport. But in both books in this series I had zero problems with them.

For those who haven't read the first book of this series yet (you should read!) we were presented to Gabe and Syd in the first book and I was anxious to read their story since then. I enjoyed being able to see Gabe waking up and seeing the position he was putting Syd in. And I'm not going to lie and tell you that I didn't get frustrated during the whole reading with BOTH characters, but it was a good book to read and I had fun while doing it.

Thank you A. Rivers for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review

This is my first book by this author and this is book 2 in a series of three books about very famous MMA fighters who work out of one gym and are friends. This book easily stands alone but I really loved it so much that I am planning on reading the first book as well.

The stars in this book is Gabe and Sydney. They are besties from high school and they have never even kissed. Until Gabe starts breaking plans and being late for friend dates and she decides to distance herself from him and join some dating sites.

Gabe starts to realize what she means to him but he is also preparing for a big fight and so its hard for him to prioritize Syd and her needs over his training schedule.

This was a wonderful story I LOVED Syd and Gabe both. They are really great people who have very busy lives. She is a doctor and he is a famous MMA fighter. They have been besties for many years but now they are ready to have a mature relationship and Gabe has to decide how to balance all his priorities. Syd has to learn how to make him see that all she wants is to be number one in his heart and hear what is important to her.

It was a wonderful best friends to lovers story and I found the MMA aspect fascinating. I typically don't read fighter/MMA stories but I really enjoyed this one. I loved the plot, characters and felt it was a really fun story and I really liked the main characters.

I received a free ARC copy of this book from the author prior to release and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This was a great second book to the series. I loved Sydney and Gabe in the little that we got to know them in the first book and I’m so happy they got their own book

Gabe and Sydney have been best friends forever and Sydney has always had a crush on Gabe. Gabe has been focused on his MMA career and Sydney has been focused on becoming a doctor. The stars never quite aligned for the two to be together until one night Gabe sees her with another guy. Finally opening his eyes and he sees what’s in front of him.

This is a classic best friends to lovers romance and I’m all for it. Even though Gabe was frustrating at times (he’s a guy so that’s pretty standard) his gear is in the right place when he realises his mistakes. And I was super proud of Sydney for standing up for herself. Once they get together, it’s super hot. A. Rivers writes amazing storylines and I can’t wait for Devon to get his book next.

When you know you do not have a choice on who your heart falls for is the greatest moment of all because now you have given the most vital organ of your body and soul away, it is up to the receiver to take care and heed your feelings! WOW! What a tortured, emotional, scary and beautiful way to live. Gabe is a man who knows what he wants but is to terrified to go that extra step to own his feelings. No instead he acts out his emotions but is giving more than one meaning for those feelings. It was a bit of whiplash for me to get through this book as I kept thinking Man get your schnit together and stop fluncking around. Sydney knows it is a dangerous proposition to fall for a man who she knows is hers. It comes down to the only emotion that is going to get these two through the harshest of times, LOVE! Oh this was a joy to read and one that I will be revisiting!

I received an ARC from the author thru Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving my review. Gabe and Sydney have known each other and been friends for a long time. They each have feelings for each other but deny them for different reasons. Gabe thinks he is doing the right thing because he does not feel good enough for her, yet he is still her friend. Sydney just does not think that he feels the way she does and chooses not to jeopardize things. She wants more in her life and decides to date. This is the catalyst that starts their relationship in a direction they both craved. They have a few obstacles in the way to happiness. When they follow their hearts, they realize they can have everything they need together. I really enjoyed this book. I thought the characters had a lot of love between them, even when they did not know what to do with it.

This story is SO GOOD!! This is book two of the series but is a standalone with interconnected stories and characters. I need to go back and read book one because I loved Jace and Lena and need to read their story! Focusing on this story though, I really LOVED Gabe and Sydney!! He’s the tough MMA fighter and she’s the sweet doctor. They’ve been best friends forever and you can tell in the way they interact and are comfortable together. Sydney decides she’s ready to start dating and he decides that it better be him that she dates. They are instantly perfection together but of course there will need to be bumps in the road as they figure out how to transition to a relationship and Gabe figures out how to make Sydney a priority over fighting. After some mess up I think Gabe really got it right because the end of this book is beautiful! I can’t wait to see what comes next in this weird because I love all the characters and want to see them get their HEA while fighting in the MMA.

A. Rivers has produced another knockout for the Crown MMA romance series.
While Gabe and Sydney have been best friends for years they have both secretly harboured feelings for each other but have never acted on them. Will Gabe finally step up and admit how he feels to Sydney? Or will Sydney finally give up on waiting and start dating other men?
These two may be best friends but the journey into relationship territory was riddled with angst, some push and pull, chemistry, steam, family relationships and heavy decisions.

My heart ached for these two and I Instantly found myself rooting for a HEA. And while I absolutely adored Gabe who was sexy, sweet, protective, and oh so swoony, Sydney I loved but to be honest got a little frustrated with her in some parts. While her feelings due to her history were warranted part of me feels she could have been a little more understanding and empathetic towards Gabe who was struggling with wanting to please everyone.
Regardless I just loved these two for each other and that heartwarming ending!! Oh My Heart!! And plus that sneak peek of what's to come has me so excited for Book 3.

This was a great friends to lovers romance. I loved the MMA aspect of the story as well. Sydney and Gabe have been friends for years. They have both secretly wanted the other for a while but didn’t realize the feelings were reciprocated.

Gabe finally realizes that he needs to tell Sydney how he feels when she decides to start dating. And when she brings her date to their favorite restaurant and to one of his fights, he knows he can’t hold his feelings in any longer.

But Sydney knows fighting will always come first for Gabe. It’s his life. She needs someone to put her first and Gabe hasn’t been able to do that.

Can Gabe finally put Sydney first and prove to her that she’s the most important thing in his life? Or will he prove her right and fail her once again? One click this fantastic friends to lovers romance now and find out.

These best friends are finally admitting to feeling more ... and I adored them together! With book two in her Crown MMA Romance series A. Rivers delights her readers once again with a irresistible fighter and a heroine who can hold her own against him. I'm enjoying the close knit bond between the fighters at this gym and am looking forward to the next in the series.

Sydney is hardworking and accomplished and really had me pulling for her to get everything she wanted from Gabe quickly.

Gabe is a sweetheart who simply is being pulled in too many directions a lot of the time. I'm glad he opened his eyes to what was waiting right in front of him.

I highly recommend this book and the entire series to anyone who enjoys a sports romance with just enough of the training and sport to keep your interest up but also packed full of heart and sizzle.

I truly LOVE this series HARD & we're only in 2 books now so that should tell you something about this author. I'm not going to blow smoke up your behind as I wasn't a big fan of Gabe at the beginning. He definitely didn't treat his bestie, Sydney, very well for a minute. She's an amazing heroine who has had a thing for Gabe for some time, but he never put her first. Now when she's finally ready to move it along to find someone who will put her first, guess who wants to explore things?! Yep you got it, Gabe. Do I believe they were perfect for each other?! Well yeah I did since the chemistry is crazy hot, but I do get a tad tired of men waiting until the person who is perfect for them to look for someone else to finally man up. So, in order to see how Gabe changed my mind, you know what to do! HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ALL!

So what do you get when you put Gabriel and Sydney together? Best friends for years that love each other to no end but do not make a move on the other one. She is a doctor while he is an MMA fighter. They both are the type that their jobs are first in their lives. They take care of each other in every way, except for romantically. When Sydney finally says enough and wants an actual relationship, she does just that and makes a move into the dating world. Gabriel sees this and does not like it. He intimates men so they don't date her. This also pushes for an actual relationship romantically from both of them. With his biggest fight coming up and needing to workout and keep his mind on the fight, will they be able to make this relationship work out? Can Sydney be understanding while he does this?

Fighter's Best Friend by A. Rivers was an awesome friends to lovers romance between an MMA fighter and his longtime best friend. Sydney has been in love with her best friend Gabe Mendoza and always been there for him. But she has grown tired of him not doing the same for her, always putting his MMA career first. So she decides its time to find a man who will treat her the way a man should and that will put her first. Gabe always knew one day Sydney would meet a guy but when she begins dating guys, he becomes very jealous. Will Gabe finally admit that he wants his best friend or will he step aside and watch her be with another man? 5 stars!!!

Another fist-bumping addition to the Crown MMA series. 🥊

What can I say other than I love this author! Ms Rivers... you rock! 😁 I've now read this book twice - once as a BETA reader months ago (before several additions) and now reading it in its final version - and enjoyed each read. Having been given extra insight to the creative process, I know fellow readers will appreciate the changes which have strengthened the storyline.

I loved Gabe in Jase's book, so knew I'd enjoy his story. I liked seeing his interactions with his family too. I felt for him with how torn he was throughout his journey, but it's human nature to want to please others, isn't it?

Loved Sydney and sympathised with her struggles. As someone notorious for not speaking up when feeling neglected/burdened/taken for granted, I understood all too well. It's a good reminder we can all have balance in our lives, and not only one person needs to do all the compromising in a friendship/relationship.

Read this - you will not be disappointed!

NB I received an ARC of this novel.

I’m so into this series!
This story was good! Gabe is so sweet and adorable, you just can’t be mad at him.
He seems like the big, scary MMA fighter but he’s actually a big sweetheart underneath.
The way he was with Sydney was so heartwarming, their first kiss was swoonworthy, I loved that scene.
It was nice to see the other characters as well like Jase, Lena, Devon, Seth again, they make the story complete. Very curious to read Devon’s story.

From the first book when we were introduced to Sydney and Gabe I’ve been chomping at the bit to get their story. Sydney and Gabe have been best friends even with Sydney crushing on Gabe. The stars never aligned for them to get together with him concentrating on his MMA career and her on studying to be a doctor. That is until Gabe sees another man sniffing around Sydney that prompts him into making his move. Will Sydney give Gabe a chance or is she too tired of waiting around for him? This story is full of angst, drama, chemistry, push and pull between the characters and family. I can’t wait for this series to continue!!

We met Gabe & Sydney briefly in the previous book Fighter's heart. The trope is best friends to lovers, MMA romance. Gabe is an MMA fighter and Sydney is a doctor, They have been best friends since college and have both been harbouring feelings for each other but were too scared to tell each other in case it ruined their friendship.

When Sydney starts dating Gabe decides it is time to tell Sydney how he feels, Sydney is willing to gove it a go, however she knows Gabe has always put fighting first in his life and she wants someone to start putting her first. This was an enjoyable read and very heart warming watching these two friends navigate into a relationship.

Alexa is quickly becoming an auto-read author for me with all her MMA romance, even though it's only the second book I've read by her.

I loved Gabe and Sydney's journey. I loved how the author wrote the way the stages in their relationship and what they have to go through. It's well written. I loved all the emotions they brought out in me, following the shift in their relationship.

I truly enjoyed their story. And I can't wait for Harley and Devon. He's going to have his work cut out for him, for sure.
