Davis Way Cole smells T-R-O-U-B-L-E when she’s fired from half of her part-time job at the Bellissimo Resort and Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi. The quarter-time job she’s left with is lulling her to sleep, exactly what she’s doing when Birdy James, centenarian director of the casino’s Lost and Found department, disappears. With five million dollars.

Davis just can’t help believing Birdy didn’t do it, if for no other reason, she’s too old to spend it. If Davis doesn’t find the little old lady and the money fast, she’ll lose what’s left of her job, at which point, there goes her Bellissimo everything.

What she needs is a good luck charm. What she gets is her home invaded by hard-headed women, a soft-hearted little man, and major carpet troubles, the combination of which sends Davis’s already suspicious mind into overdrive and landing her between a jailhouse rock and a very hard place.

A little less conversation and a lot more action are called for if Davis has any chance of saving herself, her family, her marriage, her job, and the heartbreak hotel she calls home.

Thank you. Thank you very much.

Sorry to say this 9th book in the Davis Way Crime Caper series was not good for me on so many levels. I've been a firm fan since the first book but this one simply went too far into wacky-land. Everything was too much or too many. The Bellisimo casino is having an Elvis convention so it's silly, silly Elvis throughout the whole book. How many times can a penthouse apartment be destroyed and redecorated in one day? Read this book to find out. How sick did I get with reading about the tomato plants? Very sick. The smell and texture of the fertilizer? Completely overwritten. Everything is so over the top there is no semblance of any naturally occurring life from the first page to the last. Plus the author used one of my least favored devices to clean up some of the mess she had created for the heroine, she knocked her out with exhaustion and fixed most of her screw-ups while she slept so we never even get to see Davis put right most of the problems she caused.

The books in this series are always skewed toward the comedic and I've been alright with that every time before. It means I have to take a lot of what goes on with even less than a single grain of salt but that was what I did because I loved the characters. In this book Davis has lost every single smidgen of common sense she ever had and takes down her entire crew with her. It wasn't laugh-out-loud funny, it was embarrassing.

Enthusiastic 5 stars! I loved it! Poor Davis gets herself into more trouble than any other character I've read, but she always makes me laugh!! The only problem with this book is that it ended too soon. I will be anxiously awaiting the next one!

This is the ninth book in the Davis Way Crime Caper series by Gretchen Archer.

I have to admit I do not like the direction this series has taken. I really enjoyed the beginning books where Davis was involved in the elite security team at the Bellissimo Resort and Casino. That whole casino spy thing was kick butt awesome. That was just amazingly fun stuff for me to dig my teeth into.

These last few stories where Davis is a mother of twins and both her mother and ex-mother-in-law are main characters is not really my jam. It just annoys me because I know how good these books can be. I miss the Bellissimo staff and all the hijinks they had. There definitely is some of that in this book but not enough to appease me.

I can only enjoy so many awful messes Bea and Davis’s mother can get into. I want the old Davis Way stories back. I guess I am being awful. I just love this series so much.

If you are reading this series for the first time, don’t take this review as a bad thing. This series is awesome. It is fun and it really keeps you guessing all the way through. I am just being a nostalgic Nellie, I guess. All kinds of craziness does happen in this book. There is a third look alike for Bianca who is trying to change her image and since the owners of the casino are rarely around, things tend to always go sideways at a moments notice.

Also, if you love a good cozy mystery, definitely check this one out. What a fun read!

I received this as an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) in return for an honest review. I thank Edelweiss, the publisher and the author for allowing me to read this title.

First, for full disclosure I received this book free of charge thanks to Henery Press and Edelweiss in exchange for my honest review. And second, What can I say....I am a HUGE Gretchen Archer fan, so it came as no surprise that I loved her latest installment in the Davis Way series. As usual Davis, and of course Fantasy, get mixed up in yet another shake your head caper which leaves you surprised at the final "who dun it" reveal! I did have a little trouble following the safe room conversation (trust me, you will know when you get to it, lol) but that could have just been me up reading WAY past my normal bedtime. Every single time I pick up one of Ms. Archer's books I think "How in the world does she think of these things?!" She is the master of writing dialogue....which is something I see very rarely. A few regular characters had little roll in Double Trouble but we were blessed with Bea "She shouldn't even be here" Crawford which is always good for a belly laugh or 10! My only complaint is the long wait for #10!

Rapid-fire comedy featuring Davis Way Cole that includes her entire list of crazy friends, family and Casino employees.

Bradley is off to a gaming conference in Las Vegas leaving Davis in charge so you know there is going to be trouble, Double Trouble in this case

The Bellissimo is fully booked for an Elvis convention. A lapse in security protocol has $5 Million in cash lost somewhere in the building. Hopefully it is in the Lost & Found department.

Since Hurricane Kevin repairs to the casino, a lot of responsibility structures have changed so the old team are working their own areas now. When Davis needs help at the casino, Fantasy comes to her rescue. When Davis needs help with the twins, her Mom comes in from Pine Apple bringing Bea Crawford along. What can possibly go wrong?

Hang onto your sides for this laugh out loud caper. Best read as a series not a stand alone.

I have read an ARC e-book not listened to a CD. Also this is Caper # 10.
I volunteered to read an ARC from Henery Press through Edelweiss .
Release date June 6 2020.

Excellent continuation of the Davis Way crime caper series! Lots of suspense, “whodunit?” and laugh out loud humor! Gretchen Archer has done an amazing job of keeping the storylines fresh and exciting while the main characters continue to grow and evolve. There is so much detail that I read the first 8 books three times and enjoyed them as much the third time as the first. I am already looking forward to re-reading book 9!

Bradley is away and Davis is in charge when $5 million dollars goes missing.

What I enjoyed:
* Poor Davis, I can't imagine having her mother, her ex-mother in law, and Birdy in your house
* Lots of crazy hijinks as usual. I'm amazed Davis hasn't spent longer time in jail

What could have been better:
* Davis hasn't been at the top of her game for a couple books now. This time she is wallowing from Bianca firing her.
* Having Davis, Fantasy and Baylor being at odds was just wrong
* I would like a little more wrap up

I think Archer is a fantastic author. Her character are rich and dynamic, her writing is brilliantly funny. This book, however, was a complete dud.

First, every book is identical to the last. Davis runs in circles changing clothes and contact lenses, tunneling through floors, destroying her apartment, commandeering cars, hacking into computers. They all blend together. The first five or so were belly-laugh funny, then they just got monotonously repetitive (still funny but progressively unbearably repetitive).

Second, towards the end of this book No Hair tells Davis she’s in over her head and dragging everyone down with her - and that pretty much sums up this book. It’s painfully clear why Davis was fired from her many jobs at the Bellisimo while Fantasy, Baylor, and July were all promoted. What I can’t figure out is why Bradley doesn’t divorce her and take away her parental rights. In a previous book she sent her kids to stay with her parents while she rode out a hurricane in the casino/hotel, knowing full well she might die. Who chooses to save a hotel over being with your children? In this book she commits numerous felonies, risking years in jail (and away from her kids) for something that wasn’t even her fault. Why would she do that?

Third, the section where she’s drinking in the vault with Bianca was so awful that I threw the book away. Stupid. Tedious. Monotonous. Unreadable. I put the book away for two days then tried again. Still couldn’t get through it. So I threw the book away without even finishing it. It was that bad.

Archer is a brilliant writer. This book was a complete dud. The series needs a serious refresh.

Davis' first mistake was not firing Birdy James, who is old as the hills, when her boss suggested she let her go. Birdy is in charge of Lost and Found at the Bellisimo Casino where Davis works in security.

No one can find anything in Lost and found because Birdy uses the Dewey Decimal System and shorthand - her shorthand.

The Bellisimo has lost 5 million dollars - it is in lost and found.

Things go down hill from there.

Enter Davis' Mother and her ex Mother-in-law.

Davis is in trouble - Double Trouble.

This is a fast paced, slap stick, funny book.

This is the 9th book in the Davis Way Crime Series. I say this every time; this is the funniest and best one yet. I laughed so much reading this book, and boy do we need to laugh at this time in our life.

I highly recommend this series.

Like Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum books, but crazier.

Davis Way Cole has just been put temporarily in charge of the Bellissimo Resort and Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi while her husband is out of town...and that of course is when Birdy James, centenarian director of the casino’s Lost and Found department, disappears. With five million dollars.

Content Warnings: fat shaming

Oh how I have missed Davis Way! Action packed from page one, I got fully sucked in to the story (like I do in all the other books in the series), felt happy, frustrated, annoyed, gasping for breath giggling/chuckling/snorting of laughter. And I was absolutely exhausted when the bad guy was finally caught. I love the writing style, refreshingly different and thoroughly confusing (in the best kind of way) (naturally).
The storyline is good and absolutely bonkers, the characters even more so, and I want to move in to the Bellissimo!

Review to come.

Quick thoughts:

At times a 3.5 star book- as there are some jokes or gags that seem to run on a bit too long or much.

Overall, I still love the Davis Way series and I am really anxious to see where book 10 takes us.

Prepare to laugh a lot as you read this!

I've missed you, Davis Way Cole

Davis, Fantasy and the gang are back at the Bellisimo after Hurricane Kevin. She is like your loyal best friend who can't seem to stay away from trouble. The bad guy is never an easy guess and the twists and turns always come with a healthy dose of humor. I am glad I stumbled on the latest book in the series and look forward to the next one.

The story begins with a large sum of money missing, and with Bradley and No Hair out of town, it is up to Davis to sort it out. This one problem turns into a crazy rollercoaster of events - many issues within the casino, so many people with even more problems, damaged apartments, and basically just chaos. I honestly do not know how Davis stays sane with all the people and personalities she has to deal with at all times, and all the ridiculous tasks she is in charge of! It does create such a fun read though, with many laugh out loud moments. A great book!

Gretchen Archer proves once again that a huge luxury casino hotel on the Gulf is a great setting for a cozy series. Things always seem to be going crazily wrong there, what with millions of dollars and hundreds of guests passing through every day. Davis Way Cole juggles a multi-faceted, high-ranking career, family life (twins, no less, but they are not the Double Trouble but in fact very cute), and a host of nutty relatives, quirky friends, and various villains. Not to mention horrendous housekeeping debacles both at home and in the hotel at large. She does not juggle all of this with aplomb. Sometimes there are major fumbles, like keeping on the lost-and-found lady decades past her prime, only to have a huge sum of someone else’s money disappear into the “lost”….and finding it again is wherein the caper lies. Along the way there is enough slapstick and irony to make this book a real laugh out loud comedy, no matter what kind of sense of humor you have. And as always, there are some very well-placed touching moments in the mix.

I have read and enjoyed all the books in this series (Double Trouble is number nine, not counting a couple of short stories). You can jump into the series with number nine, but it’s even better to read them in order because the character development is very enjoyable to see. I particularly liked the progress Davis made in this book in her relationship with her very flaky boss—I think they might actually become real friends! Another hidden jewel right at the end is something her toddler daughter does on the second-to-last page of the book (no spoilers! but it’s a real feel-good moment!). This installment in the series is the most suspenseful one yet. There’s a lot going on, and it really keeps you guessing.

Even if this year it’s hard to get to the beach, this book will give you that great “beach read” feel. It’s your ticket to escape into a world of high stakes casinos, down-home cooking and goofy relatives, and some nail-biting suspense and peril.
Double Trouble is a light, fun read and practically impossible to put down.

(I volunteered to read an advance copy of this book. This review is completely my own work and expresses my sincere opinion of the book.)

There are plenty of laughs in Gretchen Archer’s Double Trouble set in the Bellissimo Resort and Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi. Davis Way Cole, former police officer, mother of toddler twin girls, and part-time security for the Casino absolutely could not get into more trouble if she tried. Davis is left in charge of the casino while all of the upper level staff along with her husband, manager of the resort complex, are attending a convention. Her problem starts when five million dollars goes missing, and the week just goes downhill from there. As Davis and her sidekick Fantasy try to find the missing money, locate disappearing people, and in the process discover murders, the storyline becomes a written version of T.V. slapstick comedy a la Lucy and Ethel.

Both the dialogue and Davis’ inner tongue-in-cheek monologues move along the plot which includes her mother whose passions are cooking and feeding those she loves—all the time, an ex-ex mother-in-law who shouldn’t be there, and her daughters who are addicted to Frozen. To make the plot even more crazy, add in potted tomatoes enhanced with aromatic Black Kow organic fertilizer (yep, you know what that is!), a safe room with lots of wine, missing employees, an abandoned baby, very shady wire transfers, and a slick lawyer—just for starters. The whole city is inundated with people disguised as Elvis to participate in an Elvis convention sponsored by Bellissimo. That makes identifying any villain virtually impossible.

My favorite character is Birdy James, a confused ninety-five year old in charge of Lost and Found. No one wants to fire her, bless her heart. Unfortunately, she is the only one who can locate items in the Lost and Found room. As a retired librarian, she created her own Dewey Decimal System for storing lost articles, she makes notes in shorthand that only she can read, and she is the sole person with the keypad combination to the storage room. She plays hilariously into the story and is important in solving the mystery. I know you’ll enjoy this Southern gem.

I would like to extend my thanks to Edelweiss and Henery Press for giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

So I have to start this off by saying that I absolutely adore Davis Way and Gretchen Archer is one of my top three favorite authors, so I was so excited to read this book! It definitely did not disappoint. I loved everything about it. I laughed (many, many times) and cried and had all the feels as this story took us on a twisting and turning adventure as we try to figure out who is stealing money from the Bellissimo Resort and Casino.

The story starts off with Davis Way Cole's husband Bradley leaving the casino (along with the casino owner and the head of security) for a gaming convention in Las Vegas. Bradley (President and CEO) of the Bellissimo leaves Davis in charge and she immediately discovers that a little old lady, Birdy James, who is in charge of the Bellissimo's Lost and Found has disappeared along with 5 million dollars that the casino is not supposed to have. At the same time the Bellissimo is overrun with Elvis impersonators (the Bellissimo is hosting an Elvis convention) and Davis receives a ransom note for the old lady's return in exchange for the missing money. Davis and her security team partners (Fantasy and Baylor) set out to discover what happened to the money and get it where it is supposed to be before anyone realizes it's missing. Along the way, Davis is overrun with her mother and her ex ex mother in law Bea Crawford. The resulting escapades are absolutely hilarious and had me laughing out loud and grinning from ear to ear.

I enjoyed the mystery/caper from this story. I thought everything was wrapped up logically and made sense. I also LOVED the ending of the book (it made my heart happy). I love this series and can't wait to read future books in the series. I hope this series continues for a long, long time.

Gretchen Archer’s ninth book, Double Trouble, in the Davis Way Crime Caper series is, as was with its predecessors, simply a shear joy to read...imagine loosing yourself in a “Who Done It?” that enthralls you from the opening paragraph...and while hilarity, and the unexpected has you resistant to stop your literary momentum before you turn the last page...there are red herrings, delightful twists and turns to keep you off balance until all the puzzle pieces fall into place...and I can pretty much guarantee that you’ll be pleasantly amazed as the myriad of balls (characters) that Ms Archer so skillfully balances fall seamlessly into place with. When Bea, the ex ex mother in law shows up...who’s not supposed to be there, you can bet that mirth abounds...and can I say, who knew that multiple Elvises are Elvii? And it took Davis Way Cole to bring this to my attention...my life is complete!

Having read each book in the series, this author continues to astound me with her creative imagination and cleverness...the dialog has such intelligence, with lively repartee, rapid fire banter, and at times a droll sense of humor...through gifted prose and as scenes play out, my mind’s eye had a front row seat to ever evolving and attention grabbing chains of events. When you’re not laughing yourself silly, you’re immersed in split second plot chances where you’re thinking, “I didn’t see that coming.”, and your off in an alternate direction. As with each and every book, the story ends way too quickly, with the wait beginning for the next installment of how Davis can top the whacky hilarity of her daily life!

If I could do so, I’d give Davis’ latest exploits more than five stars!

This ARC book was complimentary, provided by the Publisher and the author. I am voluntarily providing my honest review.

I should probably start here with my bias – I’m a huge Davis Way fan. Each book in this series never fails to make me laugh out loud. Davis is the kind of character that you root for – she doesn’t always make the best choices, but she works with what she has and she does everything in her power to protect those she loves along the way.

To sum up this latest - Davis is in trouble. A lot of trouble. Missing five million dollars kind of trouble. Since our last caper she’s been demoted, the Bellissimo security team is split, and to find this money, Davis needs her mother to come babysit the twins. Who in turn brings Bea (the ex-ex-mother-in-law). (Who isn’t supposed to be there.) And tomatoes. So many tomatoes.

And I didn’t even get around to mentioning the Elvis convention. People dressed up like the King are roaming not just the casino, but all around town. It’s easy for someone with five million stolen dollars to get lost in all the Elvises. (Sorry, Davis, I tried typing Elvii but – I’m with Fantasy here.)
In other words, Davis has a lot going on.

This latest Davis Way Crime Caper is full of fun – from the mystery of the missing money to why Davis has been demoted and no longer speaking to Bianca Sanders. Will things ever be the same at the Bellissimo again? You’ll just have to read the book to find out.

I really enjoy this series for several reasons. The first is that it makes me laugh. It is silly, over the top in many cases, yet, there is a crime to be solved. This 9th book in the series finds Davis only working part time, having been fired from her job as Bianca's double. She is only working a few hours a day in security, but with her husband and boss, no-hair, out of town, she is left in charge. The crime is a bit strange in this one. Apparently there was a wire transfer sent to the Bellissimo by mistake. Somehow, the amount sent ended up in cash in a duffel bag that then ended up in lost & found. From there is disappeared. It was all a bit hard to follow, but suffice it to say, Davis and Fantasy had to find the cash. With Davis's mom coming to look after the twins, you know there is going to be something happening. She not only brings Bea, Davis' ex-mother-in-law, but prize tomato plants that have to be looked after. I love the audiobooks of this series. The narrator, Amber Benson, does a wonderful job with the voices of the various characters. She adds even more humour to the stories with her expression and tone. If you enjoy a fun story, a cozy mystery that will have you laughing, then pick up Double Trouble. I was gifted a copy of this book upon request. The rating and opinions shared are my own.

I’ve read every book in this series and some of them more than once. I wait each year for the new entry to appear and dive right in.

Davis Way works at the Bellisimo Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi. Okay, she only works one quarter of the time. What she has been tasks with for the last few months is unbelievably boring.

Not only that, she is now at the mercy of Baylor, who is the individual who used to work for her. Somehow, she still treats him as if he did work for her. Oh, by the way, Davis’ husband runs the casino.

When her husband leaves for Las Vegas, he leaves her in charge of his job. That sets up Davis (not David) to have to deal with a mistaken five million dollar transfer that has disappeared. Davis tries to track it down without letting her husband or her boss, No Hair who is also at the same meeting in Last Vegas, know that it even happened.

The trail she and her co-worker, Fantasy, have to follow leads all over the place and results in all sorts of hijinks. Her mother and her ex-ex mother-in-law appear and had even more fun to the mix.

I’m already waiting for the next book in this series and doing so while trying to be somewhat patient.

I was provided a digital advance reader copy of this book by the publisher via Edelweiss.

TROUBLED TIMES!

Since I read the first Davis Way Crime Caper Book (Double Whammy), I’ve been a fan of this series! Archer is one of my all time favorite authors as she has such superb storytelling skills! She has introduced us to her fabulous unforgettable cast of characters and made them feel as though they are people we know (or may be related to) as well as continuing to introduce some quirky new characters. In DOUBLE TROUBLE, her plot is full of mischief, mayhem & murder and continues to keep you guessing about the outcome. Archer is a master at writing Davis & Fantasy getting caught in zany situations. They always remind me of Lucy & Viv - only things eventually work out in the end for Davis & Fantasy. T-R-O-U-B-L-E comes in all shapes and sizes when $5,000,000 comes up missing from the Casino! Toss in an Elvis Convention with the Elvii taking over the town as well as the Casino. Add an Old Birdy Woman, Davis’ Mom & unfortunately Davis’ ex-ex mother-in-law Bea Crawford to the mix. Now you know there’s DOUBLE T-R-O-U-B-L-E! I was provided a complimentary copy of this book by Henery Press and Edelweiss. The opinions expressed here are completely my own and without influence.

Just finished reading this 9th book in the Davis Way Crime Caper series. The Bellissimo has been reopened after the damage from Hurricane Kevin. An Elvis convention has taken over the casino, Davis is no longer working for Bianca. On top of that, five million dollars is wired to the casino by mistake. Or was it? Now it’s missing and Davis doesn’t want to tell her husband and boss, who left for a convention in Vegas. I couldn’t help myself, I had to keep reading to see what happened next. It had me laughing and shaking my head through the whole thing. Even though Davis and her team get fired, the Bellissimo gang comes through in the end. It was interesting how Gretchen Archer pulled everything together at the very end. If you enjoy reading about Stephanie Plum(Janet Evanovich), you’ll enjoy Davis Way Cole. Looking forward to the next problem they get involved in.

After losing most of her job after the hurricane, Davis is bored with her lack of duties. Bradley is on his way out of town so Davis is in charge of the Bellissimo. An Elvis convention, 5 million in cash missing, and a missing employee has Davis and Fantasy up to their eyeballs in keeping things running smoothly while trying to find the lost cash. Unfortunately, Davis's mom & ex-ex mother in law show up in the mix. Between elvii, no Bianca, family, and several mishaps, Davis and Fantasy have to enlist Baylor to help track and find the cash. The game is afoot and with more dead bodies, a destroyed suite, and nefarious characters dodging their every move, the three of them need to solve the mystery to survive and keep their jobs. Hilarity ensues

I have enjoyed every Bellissimo book and I enjoyed this one as well. It was however, the weakest one so far. There was lots of Elvis chaos, but this time, Davis was out of control. Really out of control as in off her game. It is a natural turn of events though. Even Bianca seems to be growing up. There are only two books left in the series now and it seems as though the author is going to be moving the series to a conclusion, not just writing one crazy crime plot after another. I definitely think Gretchen Archer is the most inventive crime writer I've ever read. So que the Elvis tunes, grab a greasy snack, and read Double Trouble or you ain't nothin but a hound dog.

Davis Way and team are back, and in lots of trouble. This is the funniest book yet...and that says a lot. I would say a fast page turner but you have to take in account the laugh out loud, get a Kleenex and dry your eyes time. Mother and Bea well let's just say they grown some stinking - county fare winning tomatoes and they come in handy. Gretchen Archer did again. Tremendous plot...and character building.

What a ride! The Davis Way books are full of action from beginning to end. And they are funny! I laughed out loud several times reading this book. Davis is one of my very favorite characters, because she is freaking brilliant and she has “an unrelenting desire to place every piece of a puzzle, a healthy regard for vigilante justice, and a somewhat jaded view of human nature when it came to what people would and wouldn’t do...”. The book did put me off tomatoes for w good while, though.
