With Watson’s fiancée being held to extortion by the nefarious Milverton and his demands currently occupying the bottom of the Thames, it’s time for… a caper! But even with all the planning and masks Holmes and Watson can muster, will it take a crime lord to beat a crime lord?

A Sherlock-centric instalment of this one, as the boys try to extricate Mary from her blackmail scenario. It is, all things considered, a better than average volume that stumbles over a couple narrative hiccups but makes for a decent time.

Ridiculously, the worst part of this is Milverton, who has been built up into this villain so large that there’s really only one option left, even if he’s arranged things such that his death will result in Moriarty being exposed as the Lord of Crime. Would that he stayed so menacing.

Milverton busts into 221B for negotiations, which is largely an excuse for excessive asshattery, and if this story knows for anything, it is certainly excess. It’s just shy of a pissing contest, though there sure is piss involved, and pretty over-the-top for its era.

It also doesn’t help that the face game of this series is so incredibly bad; I swear there’s one human template and a rotation of hairstyles. It might make it easy to stage this as a one-man play, but otherwise it’s one of those details that drives me spare.

And yet, I came down liking all this, so why? Partly because of all the adjacent stuff. Sherlock and Watson have a rather frank and open conversation about Sherlock possibly being jealous over Watson going off to be married that’s rather more up front than Sherlock ever gets.

Watson likewise really gets into Holmes’ plan to steal the incriminating evidence from Milverton’s estate, going as far to create incredibly useless robber masks that made me laugh. Watson’s a drip, but a fun counterpoint to Holmes and this story makes the point about each being important.

The plan itself does seem like a direct lift from an older Conan Doyle story, which I appreciate (though I’m still rolling my eyes at what they did to Hound of the Baskervilles and may never stop) because otherwise the whole plumbing angle seems like nonsense.

Even better, it takes what might have become an obvious slut-shaming and completely flips it on its head by having Dr. Watson act the slut part and then shame himself afterward. It’s utterly ridiculous, but I like that it doesn’t go for the easy joke.

What doesn’t work is the ending, because it feels like the storyline is being told to wind itself up rather than come to its natural conclusion. Milverton comes undone so fast he might as well be a swimsuit at a nude beach.

There’s also a bizarre jump cut to the rest of the Moriarty Clan taking on… uh… mercenaries? Assassins? A Boy Scout Troupe that lost its way? I have no idea - these guys show up, stall everybody but William, but nothing establishes that they were there to begin with. It’s wild.

The Sherlock and Moriarty interaction that comes from this is probably the best part and Milverton making an assumption that defeats him is okay, but for somebody who seemed to have a big old plan he comes across pretty dim. Doubly so when you accept all the other things he’s arranged to that point. Still, Sherlock and William are now angled on a collision course and I can certainly get behind that.

An uneven volume of this manga!? Who would have thought, truly. By and large I do enjoy my time with the story, but good gravy does it ever have issues with its storytelling sometimes. It definitely seems to fly by the seat of its pants far more than it did at the start.

3.5 stars - eh, all the character interactions make me want to round up, but the bizarre narrative choices here do not and I guess the story really should be treated a little better here than it actually is.

I'm screaming! I'm glad that Milverton is gone, he was annoying. I really loved the conversation between Sherlock and Watson showing the depth of their friendship, it was really sweet.

The reveal was everything!

"Catch me if you can, Sherlock."

Sherlock calling William "Liam" is my Roman Empire. I am obsessed with their dynamic. I've always loved it in every adaptation I've seen, but it's so well done here. Sherlock being so happy when William is revealed to be the Lord of Crime was so funny, especially when he said he would've been disappointed if it hadn't been William (I actually laughed out loud 😂). William slowly walking backwards out the door was also hilarious to me, the way it was drawn just looked silly but in the best way.

"Now I know for certain that he will kill me."

That ending was crazy! Sherlock admitting to the murder and being arrested was a wild way to end the volume. And Moriarty saying that he knows Sherlock will be the one to kill him has me nervous.

Excellent conclusion to Milverton arc and the beginning of a final case... And I gotta say, the mangaka have watched their BBC Sherlock for sure. ;)

Anyway, there's a lot of plotting and counter-plotting which is very fun to read. Somebody thinks their ahead of everybody else but then a new twist comes along... Can't say much without spoilers but very enjoyable read indeed. And the little scene with Sherlock and John on the roof was nice. Mary is even more a macguffin here than before, everybody just struggles to write any meaningful role for her across the Holmes adaptations.

Hopefully the next volume has more Moriarty gang again, I like this Sherlock very much but it's Moriarty who the series is named after. ;)

This volume contains The Two Criminals Act 1-4 and with previous two volumes, it finally making a bold comeback.

While the main perspective involving the dynamic between Sherlock and William, I am so glad this volume fleshed out more the friendship of Sherlock and John. BTW, I CRIED. It’s probably added up because I am aware of the reference of their dynamic from other adaptation. But all in all, this story managed to bring out the essence of who they both are.

And how the plot unravel which intertwined into the meet of Milverton, Moriarty and Holmes is brilliant. And here’s why I love it:

1. The Blackmail King, Milverton never thought of the connection between the Light and Darkness of London.

2. Holmes glad that it was William who’s the Lord of Crime.

3. William never thought that Holmes would be the one who released the bullet.

I know, it seems predictable if you watched especially BBC Sherlock like me, but I’m still in awe how overall the arc been executed.

In-depth Rating:
→ Plot: ★★★
→ Character Development: ★★★

General Comments: Moriarty the Patriot is translated by Viz Media; created by Ryōsuke Takeuchi, illustrated by Hikaru Miyoshi, and is based on the work of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. This is Volume 12. Reviewing Manga is complicated; commenting on each volume - individually - does not reflect the overall enjoyment of the series. As such, the star-rating should be utilised as a guideline only. If anything, you should pick-up Moriarty the Patriot. It is a classic ‘cat and mouse’ between Moriarty and the infamous Holmes, what more could be said? See Volume 1 for a more personal review.

Time Read: One Day.

→ Audiobook Narrator: -

Trigger Warnings:
→ Arson.

The first half of this volume was pretty much the same as the last one (that I didn't like) and I was wondering what the hell is the author doing but it managed to pull itself together at the end of the second half and get me excited for the story again. But, this was NOT how I was expecting the revelation to happen and I'm quite disappointed with the way it did, it didn't felt true to what the story was building up this whole time.

Ceritanya sih versi lain dari Sherlock Holmes and The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton. Titik fokusnya malah di holmes dan watson, jadi James bersaudara porsinya dikit banget. Twistnya di bagian ending ga asyik. -_-
