Rate this book

The illustrations are very nice, pretty colours and some lovely scenes of winter, snow and lighted shop windows.
The story starts with a smiley snowflake falling down to earth and feeling worried about falling and hoping to land somewhere nice. I like the idea of a little smiley snowflake that has feelings but then you know what will soon happen to them which is sad. A little girl hopes she can have a Christmas tree this year but they can't afford one, she picks up a little piece of a tree that has fallen off and she puts it in a pot outside on the windowsill and decorates it. The snowflake falls on the little girls tree, the snowflake has found a special place to land and provides a shining star for the little girls tree.

This was a nice story and luckily we don't see the snowflake melt but I found the main idea that this family couldn't afford a tree confusing. They live in a pretty detached house in the countryside, if they lived in a flat in town this would have made more sense. Living where they do, if they had fallen on hard times they could easily have cut a branch to bring in and decorate, they had plenty of room and decorations. I suspect the setting of the detached house was nicer to illustrate but doesn't add up with the storyline.

A very adorable and sweet book about a snowflake and girl and it brought me straight into the holiday spirits.

I read this beautiful book in Dutch but decided to write this review in English.

I just adore Benji Davies’ books, he really has a way with words but also definitely with art. I get most of the books because of the amazing art, yes, I confess! The stories are often great as well, really, but the art is just so outstanding and gorgeous.

And it is the same in this one. I enjoyed the story featuring two characters, a little snowflake who wants to land in the right spot (and dreams of being a star on top of a Christmas tree), and a little girl who is living with her mom and grandpa and wants to have a wonderful Christmas. I loved seeing the snowflake not wanting to land, not just on anything at least, and I could fully understand that, because everyone knows what happens to snowflakes when they land. At least in my country it doesn’t generally stay in a big fluffy blanket of cold. It just smushes up. I was just rooting for this little snowflake to find her home, at least for a while. I liked how the little girl made her own little tree, as if she knew that there would be something special happening.

But the art. WOW. That was just stunning and I took my time soaking up all the details. It really gave me those holiday vibes that I was hoping to find.

The ending was great, I loved seeing both the girl and the snowflake be happy (and I had a laugh at the dog’s reaction).

All in all, a snowy and holiday spirit filled book that I would recommend.

Pretty book. I enjoyed Benji Davies artwork and I liked the story it’s just that I grew up without a lot and I always had a tree. Granted we had property and I lived in Washington State but this little girl isn’t in a city without access to trees. She easily could have cut a branch or small sapling and brought it in. But what do I know? I guess the snowflake wouldn’t have had a place to land. I suppose the location, with the story, was off for me. I know, I am being completely critical.

A lovely book following the story of two characters simultaneously, one a young girl called Noelle and the other a falling snowflake. You see their different lives during the festive season and eventually come together in a joyous celebration. Would definitely recommend.

I was here for the illustrations which did not disappoint. The storyline felt scattered and I didn't understand why the little girl couldn't have a tree in her house. I know that the illustrations show the girl and her family making decorations so they have the supplies. Maybe the family doesn't have the resources to buy or get a tree. (We lived in the country when I was younger and could get a tree from the woods near us.) I agree with another reviewer who said that if she lived in the city, in an apartment, this would make more sense to me. All in all the confusion over this and the confusion over the snowflake had the story fall flat for me.

Armas lugu lumehelbekese seiklusest.

THE SNOWFLAKE is a beautiful story about hope, finding your place, and coming together. A little snowflake is released from a cloud and floating on the wind - she is not sure where she is going and wants to stay with the cloud, but it encourages her that she will find her place. She travels on and on. Meanwhile, a little girl named Noelle is traveling home with her Pappie, and her path intersects with that of the little snowflake. She wishes for a fancy tree like in the store window, though it is not possible, and instead finds a little branch that she decorates. She leaves it outside her window, hoping snow will fall and cover it. When she awakes the next morning, she finds one snowflake on the top - the little snowflake has found her perfect place!

What I loved: This is a sweet and lovely read that is perfect around the holidays. The themes of finding your way, making the best of what you have, and hope resonate throughout this beautiful story. The writing is soft and travels between Noelle and the snowflake with powerful results. The illustrations are just perfect, in Davies's usual style, with the right amount of details and plenty of visual interest to capture young imaginations. This is a sweeping and gorgeous story, perfect for a fall or winter read, that is sure to captivate and warm the heart.

What left me wanting more: As a small point, some of the text on the snowstorm pages is really hard to read, as it is black font over a medium/darkish blue. This is particularly challenging in lowlight such as bedtime or evening. Luckily, most pages are easy to read with the clear font over light or white color backgrounds.

Final verdict: A lovely story of hope and finding your place, THE SNOWFLAKE is a beautiful read that will appeal to picture book lovers of all ages. Highly recommend as fall or winter pick.

Please note that I received a review copy. All opinions are my own.

The Snowflake|Benji Davies
Up in the sky a snowflake is formed inside a cloud, bouncing and dancing happily until she begins to fall. She didn't want to fall, though. In a town far away, a young girl Noelle walks with her grandfather Papi back home. Where will Noelle meet this fluffy, crystal white snowflake? How do they cross paths?

A warm book for children written by an author and illustrator who creates exquisite literary worlds with his brush strokes. Benji Davies' books always fill me with peace especially when they narrate such simple stories which touch issues like the ephemeral of existence and the search one's purpose in the world.

Highly recommended for ages 3+.

Ψηλά στον ουρανό ένα βράδυ φτιάχτηκε μια χιονονιφάδα που στροβιλιζόταν και χόρευε όλο χαρά μέχρι που άρχισε να πέφτει. Μα δεν ήθελε καθόλου να πέσει. Και κάτω μακριά σε κάποια πόλη η μικρή Νοέλ περπατούσε με τον παππού της κατευθυνόμενοι προς το σπίτι. Πού θα συναντήσει η Νοέλ τη μικρή άσπρη χιονονιφάδα; Πώς σμίγουν οι ευχές τους;

The Snowflake by Benji Davis

I read this book at storytime at work a while ago. Honestly, I'm completely unimpressed by this book. It was slow and not engaging to the kids. Hard as I try, the snowflake was often hard to point out because it blended into the background. The best part is when the snowflake lands on the little girls' Christmas tree.
📖📖📖📖
A wintery tale about a young girl wishing for a perfect Christmas tree, and a young snowflake wishing for the perfect place to land.

High, high up in the clouds, a tiny snowflake is made. Perfectly fluffy and white, she tumbles and bounces on the clouds. But then, to her dismay, she begins to fall. . . .

The Snowflake tells the separate stories of one snowflake and one little girl—both longing for their own special place in the world—that spin together into a magical ending. The snowflake and Noelle discover that wherever we go, and however we fall, in the end, we all find a way to shine.

Homesick for Heaven. Yes, that's a thing.

Children may feel that more often than we know. As adults, many of us have certainly felt that kind of homesickness.

Often around the time of religious holidays, like Christmas, Homesick for Heaven is often expressed in terms of making the celebration perfect. Such as Noelle, in this story, who longs for a perfect Christmas tree. And the snowflake who seeks -- and finds -- a perfect home atop Noelle's little Christmas tree.

HOMESICK FOR HEAVEN. SO HARD TO EXPRESS IN WORDS.

Longing is the emotion, a spiritual emotion. Even for adults, words may fail to do this justice. Since these are human words, and what we long for is not human.

Noelle --and her author, Benji Davies -- do an excellent job of expressing that longing, seems to me:

But as Noelle went up to bed,
she felt that there was something else missing from her tree.
Something important.
Only she wasn't quite sure what it was.

Really sweet, pretty winter book about a snowflake who is not ready to fall out of her cloud. The cloud says it's time to fall and she'll be okay, and the wind carries her all over the place. She sees a big Christmas tree that she wants to be the star on top of.

A little girl walking with her grandpa wishes she could have a big beautiful Christmas tree, but not this year. So she finds a branch and makes herself a little tree to place on the window sill in hopes of snow.

When she wakes up, the snowflake has landed on top of her little tree, making both of their wishes come true!

My only reservation with this one is that super sensitive kids like me will start thinking about the wishes of every snowflake in the sky and feeling bad for the ones that land in dirty puddles or the middle of the dark ocean. But perhaps that's a separate issue not solved by avoiding the personification of inanimate things in kids' books...
