I was in the mood for an historical detective novel so I jumped onto Project Gutenberg to see what I could find and randomly chose this 1906 dime novel.

I know that hard-boiled, square jawed Detective Nick Carter was one of these late 19th Century early 20th Century super stars who had a whole lot of books written using his character. He was sort of the poor man's version of Sherlock Holmes.

This one is actually a pretty decent one. Certainly the characters are rather wooden but it kept me wondering where it would all lead. Boston Police are investigating a series of highwayman robberies. They can't solve it so they call in Detective extraordinaire Nick Carter and his two sidekicks to save the day. And save it he does.

But I have to say that I liked how this one was presented especially since it was published in 1906. The book employed this sort of back and forth narrative technique in which we see what happens with one character, then it flips over to another character to see what he was doing at the exact same time and so on. I see this technique a lot today in thrillers and adventure novels.

And, quite frankly, I never knew the term "gee whiz" dated back to 1906.
