Damn, I see many of my friends adored it... And I'm kinda torn.
Because if one sees it as a sex fantasy, then it's totally hot and everything, Kane can do smut like nobody's business. But because it's presented as a story of two people, I can't get past all the crazy inappropriate everything. There were so many pet peeves of mine, I've lost count.
Let me tell you, I'd buy any plot if it'd make sense within the world built in the book, but it wasn't the case here.
Guess such stories make sense if characters playing a scene (or several) gets revealed at the end. Because I can't really get past everything that was wrong with the hero (apart from the hotness. his hotness was top notch).
Oh maybe I'm just boring.

in my defense! — the hero’s a former Army captain turned police chief..... how the hell am i suppose to say no to that?!?!
What i liked:

🔺 that he’s so fair, rational and very supportive of the heroine. he doesn’t let his weird lust take over his sanity when it comes to her
🔺he gives her chances to improve herself and motivates her to be better

So, I'm coming to the conclusion that I'm not supposed to take Jessa Kane stories very seriously. Am I right about this? Because, listen. If I'm allowed to laugh over the absurdity then by all means, I'm in. Her smut is delicious, that's just #facts.
But this story? It's ridiculous! Like, every single thing that happened was really weird and I'm actually straight up puzzled by it all.
You know how porn has those totally silly "storylines", or is just ladies dancing alone to some bad muzak before the action starts? I want to believe that this story is like... the written equivalent of that kinda thing. So that's what I'm gonna do. With that in mind, I stuck it out and didn't just fast-forward to good bits so that's a win in my book!

But let's fast forward London at the age 15 has been locked up many times because she acts out for her mother's attention now shes out and 18 she meets her new never before met stepfather Brody. Confused and annoyed she tries everything to get Brady to leave her, like all her mothers flings.. this time Brody is nothing like these men her mom dates let alone marries and she learns first hand. New daddy is showing her the right way.
There is some conflict because he's married to her mom and well Brody never touched the mom he just paid her bills for a surgery and never seen until the end (she didn't start drama) and that's that she was only a path to his angel. So yeah if your worried about the mom. No need.
No ow/om drama, no cheating, tiny drama, sexy times, virgin gal and no manwhore

HOT🔥 Brody's unhealthy obsession with London makes this novella an even crazier & hotter one. This had the stepfather/stepdaughter trope but there's not much of it being mentioned. so it took away a certain level of thrill when reading IMO.
As usual, Jessa Kane's hero is 100% OTT alpha, possessive, dominant and well.. Brody was a little intense with his slight stalkerish behavior but that totally elevated the steam factor when he finally has London all to himself. quick read before bedtime. 4 stars!

The epilogue 5-yrs later is what makes their romance believable and not just passing taboo-filled lust. H&h's actual romance happened within a couple days but it was months of H obsessing & stalking thru juvie-hall's video surveillance & reading thru h's diaries & her drawing books. Their intense sexual & inexplicable emotional connection sped up their romance & sexual intimacy. This book also had more emotional substance, character depth, and romance than other similar StepDad-stepdaughter smut novellas.
Repeat-juvie-offender-since-15yo 18yo virgin h acted bratty/sexy/sassy/rebellious to cover up her mistrust of others/messy life/loneliness & to find safety in being placed in a structured juvenile facility over being shuffled to random strangers by her flighty & neglectful often-divorcing mother. Loved late-30s police-chief H's combination of his OTT stalkery obsession & protective posessiveness claimy “mine” alpha-dominance with h that's softened by his encouragement & support of her having a better future than an ex-juvie (i.e., to apply for college to pursue her desire to build roller coasters). His no-sex-MOC with her mom was based on his insta-love/obsession with h based on seeing her photo. He had no romantic or sexual interest in h's mother but it was his only way of gaining access to then-juvenile-deliquent 17yo h in exchange for her mom getting medical insurance for needed surgery for a csyt. Loved how adamant H was that h feel safe with and supported by him. So, the 5-yr epilogue with h now having an engineering degree & finished designed her 1st roller coaster with 2 sons in tow & h preggo again was heartwarming.
