In the Galactic Union, few Human corporations are as storied or as well-known as the Intergalactic Haulers. Yet, they’re only one piece of a larger story.
During the Alpha Contracts, one hundred of Earth’s finest mercenary organizations went to the far reaches of the Galaxy to fight for credits. Only four returned. The rest, tens of thousands of humanity’s best warriors, were gone. Unbeknownst to most, a small, unconventional group chose a different path. Their foresight and unique talents set the stage not only for the long-haul shipping company of the present day, but of something else.
Years later, a promising young mercenary receives an invitation to a strange, secretive shipping company. There, he discovers a shadowy organization dating back to the Alpha Contracts. An organization dedicated to rescuing Human mercenaries and returning them with honor. An organization, which—despite its many faults—restores his faith in humanity. It gives him purpose and earns him his nickname: Bull.
Unfortunately, this clandestine company, and their heroic efforts, have not gone unnoticed. When a high profile hostage rescue goes bad, Bull and Jimmy Francis—the young pilot known as Snowman—find themselves searching for a way to create a better, more capable company so that others may live—all while hiding in plain sight.
Casey Moores was a USAF rescue/special ops C-130 pilot for over 17 years- airdropping, air refueling, and flying into tiny blacked-out dirt airstrips in bad places using night vision goggles. He’s been to those places and done those things with those people. Now he lives a quieter life, translating those experiences to fiction. He has written in the Four Horsemen universe with stories in numerous anthologies, his debut novel, These Things We Do, and much more to come. In the near future he will be expanding in the Salvage System and Fallen World universes as well. He was also a finalist in the FantaSci fantasy story contest with his short story “A Quaint Pastime”. A Colorado native and Air Force Academy graduate, he is now a naturalized Burqueño, retired in New Mexico.
Really top-notch book for the Rise of the Peacemakers series... We begin with current events in a prologue and then are brought back to the backstory which led to the foundation of Intergalactic Haulers, to Snowman and to the current situation. The main plot of the Rise of the Peacemakers series Arc doesn't move that much forward but the book is well worth reading as it gives us a much needed backstory which is totally relevant to better understand today's events. Most juicy tidbit: we understand where Lucille comes from.
It all comes back to a man named Bull... He fought side by side with Snowman, back in the days and well, he really believed in the idea of guardian angels having the back of stranded human mercs left to die on the vine by treacherous parties in a well-understood merc contract, for example..
I can't dig too much in the story as that would be spoilerish but: the plot is great, the characters very engaging, the action scenes top-notch, the pacing very good as you live through a rollercoaster of emotions the whole time.
I was more than impressed to learn that it was Casey's first novel but it is an awesome debut! Stop reading this review, go buy the book!
The beginning dragged on a bit too long, and the aftermath of the first mission also dragged on a bit too long, and before you know it half the book is gone. At least the book added quite a few interesting elements to the 4 Horsemen Universe to think and speculate about. Hopefully the Intergalactic Haulers and Resurgen ties back into the main series somehow, and are not relegated to this side series that I have no interest of reading from the beginning.
The format was also interesting, with the time skipping back and forth. I don't mind it.
When I read the fore word to this book I have to admit I didn't have much hope of a good read, I was wrong. No disrespect to the other fine authors in the 4 HU , this was indeed one of the best of the lot! The pacing, story telling and plot were well thought out and paced. Mr Moores as a first work it was an amazing effort. Your group of mentors, editors and beta readers did an amazing job and you turned out an amazing book. Well done sir and I look forward to reading more. Thanks for a great read.
This was a very well written story of an individual who, through individual effort, fulfilled a destiny. Bull's destiny was to save Human mercs in an hostile galaxy. Bull's story is is a story of sorrow and and story of joy. Thank you, Casey Moores for a fine story.
This is the first book of the Four Horsemen Universe that I have been truly disappointed in. I have ready seen ALIENS and there is nothing wrong with referencing and sometimes integrating A LITTLE of an already published tale but this was too much.
The author does an incredible job of capturing the nature of spec ops in the 4 horsemen universe! Lots of action. Fast moving, and great plot! Fun read.
Mr Moores can write well. And this story carries the overall series forward while delving into the depths of certain characters lives. Lively and fun. Enjoyed it.
