Marcus Cade had to cross 800 lonely light-years to Earth so he could begin searching for his beloved wife. But he was broke and his spaceship badly needed an overhaul.
So he traded his one-of-a-kind Gyroc rifle to a stingy and half-mad mechanic for a cheap fix and a Nion XT Navigator.
When Cade went to sleep during the journey, the traitorous nav performed its secret function, bringing his ship to a rift, through a vortex and into the web of an extraterrestrial conspiracy.
Cade was not amused, not one damn bit. Meaning, the aliens might have gotten more than they bargained for, as Cade was a super-soldier and a hard-bitten survivor from the Old Federation. He launched a one-man crusade, determined to rip their pocket universe apart or die trying so he could escape and continue to search for his dearest Raina.
The Soldier: Escape Vector is the second book in the Soldier Series.
I was born in Canada and remember as a small boy crawling in my snow-fort. I closed my eyes, and when I tried to open them, they were frozen shut. I didn't panic, but wiped away the ice crystals, unglued my eyes and kept on building my tunnel. Those were great days! I moved to Central California before seventh grade and couldn't believe I lived in a land where oranges grew on trees and you could pick grapes from the vine.
I used to wonder what I wanted to do with my life, what kind of work specifically. I was miserable not knowing and bordering on desperate. Then one day a friend gave me his typewriter. I began working on a novel. A different person told me it was much easier on a computer, so I bought one and began getting up at 4:30 A.M. each morning before work, writing for three hours. My eyes were unglued once again as the pang of misery left my gut. I knew exactly what I wanted to do: write. So now that's what I do, I write, and write, and write, and I love it.
I enjoy Vaughn Heppner immensely. He is brilliant at developing characters that get you engaged. One reason for his success is he doesn't push the character development, he lets it happen. Often it seems authors are being pushed to create a "franchise" he obviously resists this. I admire this and it keeps me reading as I know the best is to come. I wouldn't call this book his best, but to make it a great series it takes a foundation. I think he's done it here and am looking forward to the next book. Lot's of potential here and I for one am anxious to see it unfold.
Mr. Helping is one heck of a good story teller. Heppner is also my home town. I enjoy the read but it really doesn't challenge my science side. I don't care for things that present as magic, then are never explained. I also have a large disbelief issue with purely moral persons. I've seen too much and been disappointed too many times.
Good storytelling, it’s a bit too adventurous, requiring the reader to suspend dis belief a little too much at times, but still fun as you do root for the main character to come out ahead of all the precarious situations he finds himself in.
Enjoying the run and gun lifestyle of the future soldier. Yes he deliberates a lot and still explodes his way across space. Do like the way his past impacts the future and yes keep the storylines growing and expanding. Now use the FTL and get the next book done, please.
I liked the book because it has all the things a SF book should have. It has a good plot , a hero with a mission, beautiful woman, ancient aliens, hi tech and lots of action.
Vaughn heppner always keeps your interest in the book going with different and complex changes some you do not expect always finding something new and interesting good characters has well.
This series has great characters and an intriguing storyline. A man from a thousand years in the past is awakened and he finds himself involved in galactic espionage. All he wants is to cross 800 light years and find his wife and friends that are in stasis
Absolutely want the series to continue. Love every book Mr. Heppner has written that I was fortunate enough to have read, it has to be over 20 or more at this time.
And better than the first one. I almost didn't buy this one but after reading it I'm glad I did. I'd like to see how he goes about finding his wife (or if he does.)
The plot is a bit intricate and convenient since he can go off in this pocket universe and basically do whatever. But the characters are firm and I would like to see what comes next as long as it isn't some completely left field tangential story. I love this guy's work but this one wasn't what I was looking for in a next Soldier series book.
