I ain't 'fraid of no ghosts...

Ruth Mitchell’s, Beyond: A Tale of Discovery on the Other Side of Life, was a delightful entertaining read! In this short novel, Ruth takes us on a ghost chase. Not the kind where we are looking for the gremlin that blew up our plasma TV, but the kind that floats around, that some animals can see, but others can’t see. You know, like Casper. Actually, I was half-expecting a Ghost and Mrs. Muir story, but it turned out to be more of a romantic tale between two live humans.

Our protagonist, Laura Haskell, lives the secluded life of an author, with her white German Shepard, Cloud. They live together in the penthouse of a haunted San Francisco hotel, the Crescent. A Hollywood filmmaker, Sean Wilson, comes calling to discover if ghosts actually do haunt the old hotel. Laura is enthralled by Sean and a superficial relationship begins. Will the relationship develop into something meaningful or will Sean end up chasing ghosts around the globe? Once the hook is set, you have to keep reading!

As usual, Ruth’s story does a deep dive into the psyches of those suffering from some type psychological disorder. This is a fast and fun read and I would recommend it highly to the reader looking for some escapist entertainment.

Beyond: A tale of Discovery on the Other Side of Life is a rainbow of genres artfully thread into literary fabric woven with romance, mystery, suspense, and a bit of fantasy. It is the story of Laura Haskell, a ‘woman of a certain age’ as the French say, who lives with her dog Cloud in a chic but haunted hotel in San Francisco. Laura, a successful but emphatically boozy author, inherited the hotel from her Grandmother, once the Hotel’s infamous Madam, and now its permanent resident ghost. Laura's management of the hotel and its staff is chaotic but charming—and complicated by the possibility of demanding and unexplained night-time presences.

Among the important characters is Cloud, Laura’s practical-minded but attuned German Shepard, whose point of view is wryly expressed in remarks to the reader. And then there is Sean Wilson, a paranormal expert, ghost hunter, and filmmaker who brings romance, hopefulness, and more than a bit of tension into Laura’s life. Will Ghostly Grandmother’s secrets be revealed? Can Laura quit drinking and stay on the wagon? And will the handsome Scotsman Sean Wilson fall in true and committed love with Laura?

Beyond has “movie” written into every line and no one will be surprised when it shows up on Netflix. But do yourself a favor and read the book first.

I am so enamored with this story because it seemed to write itself, as if the characters actually exist in some other dimension and they wanted you, the reader, to know their story. That includes, Cloud, the amazing white German Shepherd who occasionally shares his viewpoint.

The story begins with Laura Haskell at work in her Penthouse Suite above the historic and notoriously haunted Crescent Hotel in San Francisco. She is writing her 7th fantasy novel titled, The Two Moons Of Merth.

Spoiled wealthy, successful Laura has a drinking problem, and privately she refers to the book as the "Two Moons of Meth," because as her drinking becomes more of a problem, the writing of it tasks her with the challenge of finishing.

Laura lives in the penthouse suite of the notoriously haunted Crescent Hotel located on Knob Hill in San Francisco.
She inherited the hotel from her famous Madam grandmother “Elizabeth Schuster, who haunts the hotel and carries the secret of who Laura’s grandfather is.

Laura becomes motivated to sober up when she meets and falls in love with Sean Wilson, the man responsible for proving ghosts exist, by utilizing artificial intelligence and “seeing” dogs.

Through Sean’s innovation, they are able to find out who her mysterious grandfather was. The couple’s courtship persists despite Sean’s grueling travel schedule once he gets a contract with FilmFlix for a television series and culminates in a storybook wedding in a Scottish castle. But the story does not end there. When the unthinkable happens, Laura must cope with her losses because her life is to forever change and she must accept what comes from beyond.

This paranormal thriller has enough surprises to keep readers guessing to the end. The story's exploration of possibilities beyond our conception of reality will intrigue anyone with an imagination about possibilities in this life and Beyond.

“Beyond: A Tale of Discovery on the Other Side of Life” by Ruth C Mitchell is an imaginative and captivating read that takes you on a whirlwind journey through a world where the veil between the living and the dead is not just thin—it’s permeable, thanks to the wonders of modern technology and the unique abilities of a very special dog. The novel follows Laura Haskell, a fantasy writer struggling with sobriety, and her white German Shepherd, Cloud, who has the remarkable ability to see ghosts. Their life in a haunted San Francisco hotel takes a dramatic turn with the entrance of Sean Wilson, an innovator using Artificial Intelligence to visualize ghosts.Mitchell’s novel is a unique blend of genres, seamlessly merging elements of fantasy, romance, and techno-thriller. It explores the perennial mystery of the afterlife and ghosts through a fresh, modern lens, challenging readers to reconsider their beliefs about the supernatural. The incorporation of AI as a tool to bridge the gap between the living and the dead is both creative and thought-provoking, offering a glimpse into a future where technology unlocks the secrets of the unseen world.

The characters in “Beyond” are deeply developed and compelling. Laura’s journey from a struggling writer to a sober, fulfilled individual is heartening and serves as the emotional core of the story. The romance that blossoms between her and Sean adds a tender dimension to the narrative, while Cloud, the seeing dog, is a delightful and innovative character that readers will adore. The ghost of Laura’s grandmother, a former Madam with a colorful past, adds depth and historical intrigue to the story, enriching the narrative tapestry.

“Beyond” is more than just a ghost story; it’s an exploration of recovery, discovery, and the unbreakable bonds that connect us, transcending even death. Mitchell’s writing is skillful and engaging, pulling readers along for an exhilarating ride that is as intellectually stimulating as it is entertaining. The novel’s pace is brisk, with twists and turns that keep you guessing until the very end.

For those who love a story that combines the speculative with the heartfelt, along with a dash of romance and a sprinkle of technological marvel, “Beyond: A Tale of Discovery on the Other Side of Life” is a must-read. It’s a novel that not only entertains but also expands the mind, inviting readers to imagine the possibilities that lie just beyond the edge of our current understanding.

It is all about Laura who goes to a hotel but it is not a random place to stay and leave. The catch is that the hotel is spooky. Laura continues her journey where she discovers family secrets during her visit there. As the story progresses, there is twist and turn which is more than enough to keep the readers hooked till the ending. The display of varied characters like Cloud, Sean, Liam, Emily, and so on which makes this read an adventurous and memorable journey. Personally liked Sean who is a paranormal filmmaker, he accompanies the protagonist on her intriguing journey to unravel the past. Their romantic plotline amidst the trials and temptations is something calm to the aching soul. Though at times their sequence of romance seems predictable, the plot construction overshadows it all. The fictional narrative is penned carefully with satisfying literary techniques and literary themes. For instance, the usage of the technique 'Anthropomorphism' gets the limelight in this fiction which is based on giving human attributes to the animals or so. This technique contributes much to a fun-filled sequence and it is equally informative. The usage of imagery and metaphors makes this book a standard read. Certain descriptions like the hotel being inherited by ghosts and interaction between them resemble that of Sophie Kinsella's "Twenties Girl". The usage of descriptive paragraphs and breaking down of the thoughts depict the postmodern style of writing.
Picking this book after submitting a research article for my Ph.D. coursework is the best thing I did last week. Reading a book with female-centric characters excites and inspires me so this is one such book where I enjoyed thoroughly. Highly recommend this book to those who wish to read some fun-filled fiction during tough times or to calm themselves down.

Presented to us by an immensely talented writer, Ruth Mitchell, the book “Beyond: A Tale of Discovery on the Other Side of Life” is a classic horror work. The book is filled with astonishing elements that leave its readers amazed. The story is a journey of Laura, the female protagonist, who has moved to her inherited spooky hotel which once was managed by her grandmother who still lives there as a ghost. The story unfolds with quick, witty dialogue between Laura and her four legged companion Cloud. As one continues reading the pace eases into Laura's colorful personality, challenges and outlook on her life as she knows it. There are hints of intrigue, romance throughout the book as ghost chasing comes to the forefront. I found this to be a light hearted, fun read !

Mystery, love story, paranormal adventure. Ruth Mitchell uses all these themes to put together one killer of a story. Plus, there’s a dog named Cloud that’s even more articulate than his owner (and the story’s protagonist), Laura Haskell.

Laura is an absolute mess when the story begins. Forget that she lives in the boutique hotel she owns, where room service is 24/7. Or that she has a successful writing career. None of that compensates for her often poor choices in men. Or her dependence on alcohol to get through the day.

And just as the book opens, she hits a wall with her latest book.

But things are about to turn around for Laura. Cloud, the smartest dog in fiction, helps as much as he can. A good man shows up, looking for ghosts at Laura’s hotel but finding so much more. Laura dives into a search to discover who her grandfather is – her secretive grandmother would never say.
Soon the clues to her grandparents’ lives fall in place, opening up Laura’s world until she absolutely embraces the great beyond.

Mitchell’s twists and turns in this novel encourage us to see the thin veil between this world and the next. For the main character, that’s a great comfort because even though Laura’s life improves, it is not without its own tragedies.

I loved that I never knew what the next turn in this book would be. I loved how carefully Mitchell treated her characters, alive or dead, two-footed or four. She writes with so much passion and compassion. And it shows in the phenomenal stories she creates.

"Beyond" is an interesting, layered story, that is entertaining and easy to follow. Part ghosts story (plural because there are a LOT of them), part romance, part intrigue, this book’s got so much packed into it, yet it flows well. Laura, the main character, owns a haunted historic hotel in San Francisco that she inherited from her grandmother who was a famous brothel madam. The story is also told in part through the point of view of Cloud, a fluffy white dog that sees ghosts. I found the characters well-defined, colorful, and engaging and the plot’s twists and turns didn’t take me where I thought it was headed.

Unfortunately, a disappointment. This book had so much potential, but it didn't do it at all for me. Finishing was a struggle.

The premise is unique and very interesting. I really wanted to love this book. The general plot idea was good, but unfortunately the execution fell completely flat. Mitchell's style kept me at arm's length from the story, meaning I simply couldn't get invested in the characters. Although everything going on in their lives was interesting, I couldn't feel it and because of this situation, the massive unexpected twist at the end, completely flatlined for me.

I wanted to feel Laura's struggle with giving up alcohol. Somehow, that whole experience was just glossed over, not giving the daily struggle sobering up after years of alcoholism the respect and emotional input it deserves. And then this aspect of the storyline and the ghost hunting (along with the theme of making peace with the past) were not meshed together. Everything Laura experienced before the plot twist should have informed how she behaved after the life-changing incident, but it doesn't really. Everything felt disconnected, I suppose.

Lastly, I couldn't relate to the segments of the story that hopped into Cloud's perspective. The dog's inner monologue always felt contrived and not really canine. Since I grew up with dogs and specifically Labrador and Golden Retrievers, this was just off and totally didn't work for me.

I definitely think there's potential and I hope the author keeps writing, but also really works on bringing emotions to the surface. This book could have been so good.

•Starting with the title of the book, I feel it's a pertinent one. For a particularly insightful title I would rate the title 1/1. The cover then again is an exceptionally appealing one.

•Is it astonishing to call a paranormal thriller novel both scary and heartwarming? Both in-your-face horrifying and also entertaining? That's my view of "BEYOND" . I lapped up the horror and simultaneously enjoyed the fully-fleshed characters. The author had me literally on the edge of my seat with this book.

•The story begins with Laura. She lives in a haunted hotel in San Francisco with her beautiful white German Shepherd, Cloud, who can see the ghosts. Laura inherited the hotel from her Madam grandmother "Elizabeth Schuster", who haunts the hotel and carries the secret of who Laura’s grandfather is.

•Laura and her dog Cloud will take you on a Amazing ride to discover what actually happened to her grandparents and how that affects her today. And then Comes Sean Wilson, a paranormal expert, and filmmaker. Laura falls in love with Sean Wilson, and become motivated to quit drinking and sober up.

•Via Sean’s innovation, they find out who her mysterious grandfather was. But the story does not end here.. Now Ruth Mitchell takes us on an exciting, suspenseful journey that will leave you breathless at the edge of their seats until the last page is turn.

•The characters are well developed and strong. The book has a good and unique storyline which has kept my interest throughout the duration of reading. Beautiful narration makes it even more engaging.

•It's a gripping tale with an interesting plot. Every pages have the many twists, it increase the curiosity. The language used is simple and lucid and the gracious and eloquent writing style is what tops it up. All the events throughout the course of the novel seem credible and the way their story sizzles is worth praise.

•Thrillers can be difficult to write but this story nails it. Truly engaging story that will grasp your attention.

Highly recommended!!

Beyond is an action & adventure romance novel written by the author Ruth Mitchell, published in December 2020. The protagonist Laura Haskell, a fantasy writer, and her stunning white German Shepherd, Cloud, are the center of the narrative. Laura is a well-known writer who has to stop drinking. She resides with Cloud, who has ghost sighting abilities, in a haunted hotel in San Francisco. Everything changes in her life when Sean Wilson shows up. For as long as people have lived on Earth, ghosts have baffled the living. The journey that Beyond takes the reader on reconciles their plausibility. Sean and his team use artificial intelligence to transform how people view ghostly apparitions. This results in the identity of Laura’s enigmatic grandfather being revealed, and it also ignites an odd romance between Laura and Sean. Will it last?
Laura’s life improves when she sobers up. She faces an Etheric Revenant head-on, completes the book she has been battling with, and wins Sean’s heart. As soon as the family ghosts are located, Sean’s reality ghost show experiences a sharp increase in viewership, and Cloud gains notoriety, posing new difficulties. A thrilling journey awaits readers as they suspend disbelief and get to know Cloud and his distinct viewpoint in addition to the specter of Laura’s strange grandmother, a former celebrated Madam who catered to San Francisco’s affluent gentlemen. This book is ideal for those who want an exciting, fast-paced read that presents mind-blowing concepts in an elegantly written, engaging way. For those who enjoy the genre, this 278-page book is ideal. This book asks readers to imagine the possibilities that exist just beyond the boundaries of what we currently understand, in addition to providing amusement. Highly recommended from my side.

☕️If you are looking for a book that has everything a reader wishes for, this is it, yeah you read right! The story is blend of fantasy, with right amount of spooky and supernatural elements and a log of thrill that is topped with drama, OMG! Like what a combination.

It follows a story of Laura who in itself is a quite an unique character, she is writer lives in an offbeat place and discovers crazy secrets about her her own self and things gets crazier when Sean actually gets into the story.

I must say, the book is very well crafted and it is titled beyond because it is about the life that is ‘beyond the box, a story that is beyond the fence’ and I absolutely enjoyed it.

Also, besides the strong female lead, Cloud was one of my favourite characters, I could even hear what was not associated, I mean I felt that in line with Cloud and Laura.

The cover may make it look like a MG read but it’s not, the drama is so on point, it’s fascinating as well as fantastic, with fantasy and all things nice but definitely spooky, if you enjoy a thrilling and entertaining tale with many enthralling elements you will enjoy this book as much as I did.

The language is classy and easy, well also fun at times.
You need to think beyond while you read it and let go the real life that anyways sucks, I truly enjoyed it and I will surely recommend it.

I'm not a fan of romances as a genre, so take it all with a grain of salt.

This was a lovely light story of an heiress hotel owner/ semi-successful writer who falls for a cutting-edge-tech-ghost hunter. Naturally, her hotel, and her family's history are interesting to him, and it all brings them together.

Oh. And the dog makes comments here and there. I'm not certain how I feel about that, but I didn't utterly hate it. It was almost endearing.

I will say, however, this is one of those where the plot twist makes you want to throw the book. If you like that sort of thing, go for it. If you can't handle it, read it anyway.

The only criticism of the narration is that she seemed a little too chipper at times for the circumstances. But 1 also acknowledge that was how the book was written. And I can't imagine how to achieve the balance between lighthearted romance and very serious life issues.

Overall well written, interesting, decent flow.

This is a delightful and fast-paced romp of a ghost story. Layered with familiar Bay area locations and establishments, in Beyond we find writer Laura who lives in a haunted hotel in San Francisco and is struggling with personal challenges and the finishing of her book. As the story develops, literal and figurative ghosts are discovered, personal and family history revealed, all while the charming characters weave their way into our hearts, including Laura’s adorable and not at all modest ghost-hunting companion, her dog Cloud. There is mystery, there is romance, there are ghosts. What’s not to like? Beyond will keep you turning the pages!

I couldn't put this book down. Laura Haskell is one of the most compelling characters I've read in a while flawed, witty, and deeply human. Her relationship with Cloud (who totally steals the show in certain chapters) brought heart and unexpected humor to an otherwise eerie, atmospheric tale. The paranormal twists are clever, especially the use of AI and ghost-seeing dogs fresh and believable in the context of the story. And the final chapters? Utterly gut-wrenching but perfect. This is a book about love, legacy, and learning to believe in the unseen. Highly recommended!
