He’ll do anything to save a young girl’s life. She’s a runaway who was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Can a carjacking turn into a partnership that will redeem them both?
Deeks: I may be an asshole, but I’d never intentionally hurt an innocent. I had to steal her car, though. To save someone I swore to protect.
I’ve screwed up enough times to turn my life into a wreck. But I’m not failing on this one. Maybe this chick can help me. I don’t want to risk her life, but she’s smart and resourceful, and just might know how to keep us alive.
Kena Chan with her beautiful eyes and knock-out smile. Grandpa would love her. He always told me to find a girl who was a thinker. “They’re worth their weight in gold, son. If anyone can get you out of a mess, it’s a woman who’s smarter than you are.”
I hope he’s right. I hope that the Barrett in me can find the strength to fight this battle and get everyone to safety before it’s too late.

I received a free copy from the author and voluntarily reviewed it.
After reading The Runaway I was curious to see what would happen in The Fighter. The Runaway ends with a hint of what is happening with Deeks and I was looking forward to this story. The Fighter follows a new couple namely Deeks and Kena and how they meet and grow closer. There also is a suspense/ danger element again.
Unlike what I expected the story starts a lot earlier than that scene we get at the end of the Runaway. I felt that scene ruined some of the suspense for Deeks story as we know a few pieces and where they are going to end up. There is still plenty we don't know and I enjoyed seeing the story play out. Deeks and Kena meet in a very unusual way when he carjacks her car. It was a bit too convenient timing wise and I found Kena's reaction a bit unrealistic, but I did like seeing them end up together.
The Fighter is a combination of suspense and danger for the couple as well as some sweet, romantic and deep bonding scenes between the two of them. There were some parts I really enjoyed and others that didn't quite for me. As I mentioned before there are a few things that are just a tad unrealistic and at times I couldn't quite suspense my disbelief. The story also failed to grab my attention as much as I wanted. And I didn't really care about the danger/ suspense elements, but I think that's mostly my current reading mood. Because we already knew some of the Barret Boys' past due to book 1 I felt there wasn't as much much curiosity about that in this book and I was glad Deeks doesn't wait too long to tell Kena what happened. Kena has her own hurt in the past and it was great seeing her open up to Deeks about those.
After the rough start I did end up liking the romance between Kena and Deeks, things develop quickly, but I felt their connection and I like how they get to know each other well in a short period of time and confide in the other. I liked both Kena and Deeks and how we got a feel for their characters. I didn't really care for Deeks fighting habit, but it was clear he had a good heart. I enjoyed seeing a bit of Annie and Michael from book 1 toward the end of this book. The epilogue is great and I wish we got to spend more time at the ranch, maybe in future books. I am looking forward to the next Barret Boys story.
To summarize: The Fighter is a solid sequel. While it can be read as standalone it has some ties to book 1 and I think it's enjoyed more in order. The Fighter follows Deeks and Kena, there is plenty of suspense as well as romance. I did struggle a bit with this book at times, some parts felt a bit unrealistic or too convenient and I didn't really care for the suspense elements due to my current reading mood. Sadly the book failed to fully grab and keep my attention. There were plenty of parts I did enjoy and some great scenes. I liked seeing Deeks and Kena getting to know each other and growing closer, they made for a great couple. I liked that Deeks had a good heart even with his fighter tendencies. It was nice seeing a bit of Annie and Michael again later in this book. And the epilogue is awesome too. I am looking forward to book 3.
The Fighter (Barrett Boys #2) is a ya contemporary romantic suspense novel. Oh my achy heart. I absolutely love the Barrett Boys. Perfection. Characters have depth and are completely fleshed out. Character growth, unfolding of the plot and a sweet romance with the proper mix of elements to create a unforgettable read. Deeks and Kena's romance is sweet perfection. Supporting character's are engaging. Arley stole the show and broke my heart. I absolutely loved the epilogue. I'm so invested in these characters and cannot wait to read the next Barrett Boys story when its available.
I adore this author's writing style and how she implements suspense in every lovestory.
A must read ya contemporary romance for all readers who love suspense drizzled over a captivating plot with loveable characters.
The Fighter by Jordan Ford is EXACTLY what a YA Contemporary Romance is supposed to be like. Sensual, yet clean. Emotional, yet uplifting. And brutally honest in plot and love.
I should really have different rating scales for romance genres. Is this a 5 star on the same level as a dark, adult romance? Not at all. BUT for a book written in the heart of the YA genre, it was spot on, 100% perfect in every aspect. The character growth, the plot development, the sweet romance. I was HOOKED from the opening page and found it hard to put down to feed my family and walk our new puppy.
Deeks was amazing. He was so compassionate. He had a heart full of love but a mind as dark as night. His self-loathing was sad. He was a morally gray character that literally made my heart swoon with his steadfast protective role and his genuine honesty.
Kena broke my heart. Running from "nothing," I was amazed at her transformation as she cared for Deeks and recognized a soul deep connection with the older boy who literally forced his way into her life.
The story was fast-paced and thrilling. The romance was steady, sweet, and so sensual. It wasn't sexy but it felt like...more...because of it. These were young characters but they showed more maturity than so many older characters I've read.
I loved the side characters, especially Arley. I loved catching up with Michael, Annie, and Jackson. And I LOVED how this one leads into Brody's story, which will be Book 3!
Jordan Ford has done it again. Beautiful love, major problems to overcome and a great ending. I loved book one but I think book two is even better. I ADORED every single second of this book. I just kept turning page after page, not breathing, waiting to see what happened. This author knows how to pull you in and keep you hooked. It's definitely 5 stars for this story and it definitely needs to be on your TBR list now!! I can't wait for the next. I was privileged enough to receive an advanced reader copy of this book from the author for a voluntary and honest review.
Just like the first book, this was absolutely addicting. I never wanted to put it down, which resulted in a severe lack of sleep, but a finished book. The characters were compelling, and I loved the romance. I might’ve actually enjoyed the first book a bit more, but I still really loved this one!
The Fighter follows Deeks, the brother Michael was separated from years ago. Since then, Deeks has joined a gang, and cage fights for money. During an attempted escape from his gang, he steals Kena’s car, leading them into a partnership strong enough to overcome the hardest struggle.
I had the same complaint about The Runaway that I do here. At times, our characters made the most illogical decisions they could have. Seriously, Kena gets car jacked, and instead of freaking out, she thinks about how hot the guy is, and then stays with him. It led to some super fun conflicts later on in the story, but I just found it a bit hard to relate to her at the beginning.
In my review of the first book, I mentioned it’s predictability. While it was one of the things that was so charming about it, I was worried that this book would follow the same path. Thankfully, this book took a much more unpredictable route. It felt totally different than any other romances that I’ve read, and I loved it for that.
I feel like the conflict involving Arley was a super smart way to give our characters another dimension, and to keep the story moving. It made me love Deeks and Kena, and really helped soften Deeks’s exterior. I also really loved how we learned even more about Grandpa in this one through Deeks’s eyes, I’m super excited to see what the other brothers thought of him. I was disappointed at the beginning that we weren’t seeing Michael and Annie at all, but I forgot about that disappointment as soon as Deeks and Kena ran into each other.
Just like the first book, the ending of this book made me want to dive right in to the next. Brody’s story promises to be just as addicting as the previous two, and I’m excited to add another Barret Boy to the ranch. I said it about the first book, and I’ll say it again here, if you’re a romance fan, you’ll love this series!

This book was amazing. Deeks and Kena have completely stolen my heart. Their story is definitely unconventional. It is a story that will capture your heart and mind. You will truly feel like you are in the pages. It was magical how real this book feels. I cried and laughed and let me tell you I swooned hard. They have both lost so much and they both are fighting to find a new normal. The strength they posses is inspiring. I am so happy I got the chance to read this. I am so forever in love. It is absolutely different and beautiful. It is dark and suspenseful. I could never tell what would happen next. I was hanging on to every word and always begging for it not to be over. The family that they make and fight for is incredible. I HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK! It is fun and the romance is deep and the characters will have you falling so hard. It is captivating and keeps you invested. This book was everything.
This one was emotionally exhausting...all the 'feels' I loved it. The next Barrett boy to come home is Deeks. I enjoyed all the backstories that come through in these stories as well as the here and now. The thoughts and words from their Grandpa still in their minds. Kena has gone through her own personal hell, on the cusp of womanhood her life is ripped out from under her as she becomes an orphan. He's trapped in the world of illegal fighting and so much more. I was glued to my kindle as the final chapters galloped home. Would they make it out alive and have a future together? Just brilliant, I loved it.
More like 4.5 stars. I liked this a bit more than the first book. Deeks is Michael's brother and this is his book. It was good to get to know him more. He was good guy in heart but his situation wasn't that great. He worked for a bag guy didn't know how to get away. Until something happened. I really liked Deeks memories about their grandpa. It gave more information about who Deeks really was. Kena was a great character also and I really liked her. She was pretty strong character and great help for Deeks. They were great for each other. Can't wait to read next book.
An ARC was provided in exhange for an honest review.
Wow. Perfect book to keep you happy to be stuck in. The Barrett Boys are something else. Glad to meet Deeks and Kena. This second book is an amazing continuation.
I love Jordan Ford's gritty teen romances. Her books often have her characters overcoming tragedy and action elements. There is usually a romantic feel good endings in her books. The danger adds to drama and obstacles that need to be overcome. The Barrett Boys series is no exception. The Fighter is exciting and sweet. I pretty much read it cover to cover in one sitting.
After finishing the epilogue in The Runaway, I knew I’d be making grabby hands at The Fighter because I NEEDED to know just what the hell happened and how things would work themselves out and I have to say that I wasn’t disappointed. Kena and Deeks story was definitely a rollercoaster of a ride that kept me turning the pages until the very end.
I really liked Kena and Deeks. Kena has had her world crash around her and she is struggling. But even with everything going on, she still has an eye to having a future ~ even if it’s not the one she’d always picture for herself. Deeks world has gone wonky on him quite a few times and while the life he is living right now isn’t all that great, he does have a purpose and reason to keep doing what he’s been doing.
Their journey is an interesting one to say the least. From the moment they collide, they actually make sense together. Deeks runs on emotion, while Kena tends to be a little more logical. While they are opposites in almost every way, what they do share brings them closure and makes them see each other for exactly who they are and find that they really like who the other person is. They both made decisions that didn’t necessarily make sense, but at least they realized it ~ even if it was after the fact. But while things between them do happen quickly, I didn’t have an issue with it at all, sometimes being thrust together in a high stress situation can work in ones favor, and I really liked where they were at in the end.
I have to say that there is something addicting about these characters, and this is only the second book in the series. They all have that “thing” that draws you in and makes you want more. The situations Kena and Deeks find themselves in are pretty intense and could be triggers for some, so reader beware. But I loved what Arley brought to the story and getting to catch up with Michael, Annie and Jackson was awesome. Now for that epilogue, while not as intense as the one in The Runaway, this one also has me quite interested in getting my hands on the next book to see what will happen next in the world of the Barrett Boys.

Deeks ... I couldn't help but love him. Even though he was a fighter, he was this sweet guy who had a big heart. I loved how he looked out for Jade and was totally in love with Arley. The author really portrayed Arley like the cute 2-year-old she was. Although Deeks was good guy, Kena didn't know that and I thought she was overly trusting of him after he car-jacked and robbed her. But I guess she was a broken girl who sensed the connection with the broken boy Deeks was. Either way they developed a connection that was unbreakable. A great addition to the series!
Kena's parents died this year and she has become a totally different girl. Once she was the popular girl with lots of friends and now she's the goth nerd who hides in the corner. Her aunt and uncle don't want her and she just got expelled from school, so she decides to run away and be on her own. She never expected to get car-jacked, robbed and almost raped within a week. Deeks knows he shouldn't have car-jacked, robbed and then left Kena at the rest stop and when he goes back to get her, he saves her from being raped. All he knows is that Jade died in his arms and his boss Cruz stole her 2-year-old daughter. He promised Jade that he would get her back and raise her as his own. The last thing that Deeks expects is for Kena to want to help him get her back. Even if they can get her back, Deeks knows that Cruz will never stop looking for her.
I received an early copy courtesy of the author in exchange for a honest review.
This book comes out soon, make sure you pick it up because you will not be disappointed. The continued story of the Barrett boys is not something you want to miss. Jordan Ford has a way of sucking you into her stories and making you root for these characters from beginning to end. This story was sweet, suspenseful, entertaining, addicting, and I just cannot wait for the next installment.
Reading this series is like watching a movie you don't want to end. There was just so much excitement. The way the two main characters meet and the experiences they both went through together was interesting, unique and unexpected. They couldn't have found each other at a more opportune moment when they both needed someone on their side. Sure it wasn't the most conventional way but this unique extreme situation has changed their lives for the better.
There was a lot of action throughout the book and a lot of memories and healing. I love that the Barrett boys in this case Deacon aka Deeks take the time to remember their grandfather and all the good things he brought into their lives, it's endearing. I also enjoyed hearing about Kena and what and who made her the way she is now. She's a quick witted entertaining character that you just want to hug.
Their story was an adventure and I cannot wait to see what happens in Brody's book. I really want to say more about this book but I don't want to spoil it, I'd rather as a reader let you experience all the suspense and excitement through your own eyes but just know again this is a really great read and will not disappoint you.
Firstly, it must be noted that these covers are fantastic. This series had me hooked from the get go. I loved Michael and Annie's story in The Runaway, it set the scene for the return home of the five long lost brothers. The Barrett Boys are a bunch of lost boys, orphaned in their teens and separated for years living lives on the edge doing what they need to in order to survive. Deeks is the fighter, always protecting those he loves with his fists, in order to survive, he joined a gang and fights in illegal underground MMA cage matches to earn his keep. However, his life takes a drastic turn the day he meets Kena in the worst possible way.
I was on the edge of my seat from start to finish with this story, their beginning was crazy, he carjacks her, but ends up returning to help her after feeling guilty about leaving her all alone and deserted. She begins to trust him after hearing his story and wants to help him rescue a little girl he made a promise to save. It's high adrenaline, high drama all the way through, with a blooming romance as these two fight their feelings, but can't help falling for one another the closer they become. The last few chapters were full throttle suspense, this series really ticks all the boxes. I loved Deeks and Kena. I keep saying my new favorite couple, but I reserve my judgement as these books keep getting better and better. I was fortunate enough to receive an ARC and this is my honest review.
Oh this book was an adventure from start to finish. I never want to read the ending of these stories because I feel like it’s going to make me cry or something bad is going to happen before the ending. I was already crying in the beginning of this story. I felt so bad for Jade but unfortunately I figured it was coming since the ending of the first book made me think something was going to happen to her. I loved Arley though. She was so cute and definitely shouldn’t have had to go through that. Kena was an awesome character and it was interesting to see how she handled things. Between getting carjacked and almost being attacked by a gang to having to rescue Arley and then run away Kena went through a lot in this story but still was able to find joy and happiness and eventually love. Deeks has definitely had a rough lift from the beginning. The Barrett boys and the past they have had make me so sad and have all the feels. I’m so glad things started changing for the better for him and Micheal. These two had great chemistry and really worked well together. Kena did so much to help Deeks when she really didn’t have to and Deeks just wanted to make sure he could get back to Kena and Arley. I’m so glad these characters are coming together in each book and I’m excited to read about the next brother!
I absolutely loved this story!! The characters pull you in from the very beginning and hold on until after the book is done! I want more and I can't wait for the next book! Kena and Deeks meet in a wild way. He jumps into her car as he is being shot at and pulls a gun to make her drive. He is trying to do the right thing and is caught up in a situation that makes it really hard. I really liked getting to see inside why Deeks makes some of the choices he does. Kena is running away as she is looking for a way to move forward after her parents died and she is struggling at her Aunt's. I loved the way that things developed in this story. There is plenty to hold your attention the entire way through. Things might move quickly but it fits the events of the story. I loved the banter between the characters. They might be strangers but they are drawn to each other and they, surprisingly, understand each other pretty well once they get talking. The characters feel real and so even though the events might seem unbelievable, when you read the story, it doesn't feel like it. It is believable throughout the story. I truly adored this characters! I loved this story and I can't wait to get more. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
This story was so good. It was a great continuation of the first book. The first book does give us a bit of insight on what happens in this book but I feel like it still maintained the mystery. The way this story was written was amazing. The characters were beautifully created. I look forward to “The Protector” following another Barrett Brother through his story.
First off, the characters. They are incredibly made. They felt truly real even if this story is fictional. Kena and Deeks had so much going on in their lives. (I don’t want to spoil anything so I won’t say much about the story itself.) They both had there problems and made mistakes. Even the people who were the villains were so fully made. I absolutely despised Cruz’s character and his gang. Even small Arley was so sweet.
Now, the story. It was perfect. It flowed smoothly. I loved all the details and events that ended up with a big finale. I didn’t expect so many of the things. I loved how people from this story and the past story mixed together. I didn’t seem forced or overwhelming at any point. There were so many stories running at the same time but it all seemed to gel.
I received a review copy and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Deeks' life hasn't been his since the night his grandpa died. He lost the only man he ever looked up to, loved the night his father killed him. He lost his brothers one by one until he lost Michael. Since then he's been a money-making fighter for Cruz, a cruel gang leader. But Cruz has gone too far and destroyed the only good left in his life. Now he has a target on his back and a promise to keep.
I loved book one of the Barrett Boys. Book two is even better. A guy finally fighting for the right reason and a girl running from loss and finding her everything. Deeks and Kena were inevitable the moment she reached the intersection. He is too hot-headed, she is too level-headed. Together they are better than balanced, they are elevated. But as much as I liked them, Arley stole the show. Every word she uttered, every messy meal she enjoyed, every hug of her stuffed animal captivated me. She was so precious and more than reason enough for Deeks and Kena to put their lives on the line. There's so much action involved in this story and an overload of emotion. I couldn't read fast enough. The Barrett Ranch has more rooms to fill. Bring on Brody's story.
Jordan Ford has done it again, I absolutely loved this book! Not only is there action, there is also suspense, captivating drama, and unexpected twists in the plot that left me stunned. The characters are intriguing, and well written, plus they are realistic and clever. In this book Deeks has lost his friend and is determined to save a young girl from his boss, a gang leader. I really enjoyed the glimpses in Deeks' past, and his memories of the grandfather he loved. Kena Chan is leaving home when a young man decides to carjack her, but she won't have it, and when she notices that he is injured, she is resolute in her efforts to help him, not only with first aid, but also with rescuing the young girl he cares for deeply. Wow, I couldn't put this book down, definitely a must read. I can't wait for the next book is this wonderful series.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book
I need to start by saying that I loved little Arley. Deeks is involved with Cruz's gang, and when the worst happens and he needs to retrieve little Arley, he will do anything to keep his promise. When he decides to steal Kena Chan's car, he didn't expect to find someone so smart and who in the end would be willing to help him with his plan. As they spend time together, the attraction between them also grows. Kena is also running away from her past after her parents' deaths, and the connection she and Deeks share is something she has never felt with anyone, and the feeling between them is mutual. They just need to execute their plan with precision to be able to proceed to the Barrett ranch, but not everything goes as planned and Deeks will need to face Cruz once again. I loved the story, the characters and the reunion between the Barrett brothers and the new members of each family, as well as the interaction between Jackson and Arley. I highly recommend the reading.
>Book Reviews – The Fighter >I am an independent reviewer. This book is the 2nd in the Barrett Boys series and ends in an HEA. The first book was about Michael. This book deals with Deacon, the brother Michael was with and then lost. Deacon ended up fighting for a gang. He loved it at first, but eventually realized how he was really a trained fighting monkey for an evil man. This man’s baby momma was in danger from him, so Deacon hid her and the toddler, giving them his fight cuts to help them out. Deacon is such a good man. He wasn’t in love with the woman, but knew helping her and her daughter was the right thing to do. Deacon suffered from fits of rage. I loved how his rage was described and how hard he had to work to overcome it. His grandfather was a real influence in the short time Deacon knew him. It makes one wonder if anyone you’ve ever helped thinks back and is influenced by things done or said. >Kena is a past valedictorian whose life took a 180 degree turn when her parents died suddenly. She is now living with an aunt who doesn’t want her. Kena reinvented herself as a goth. She decides to start over, leaving town. She was on the road for, like, half an hour when Deacon car jacks her. Deacon decides to run, as well. The gang leader killed his baby momma and stole his child. Deacon is the next gang target for hiding the woman and child. >Kena reacts interestingly to Deacon before she gets to know him. I only wish she was a bit older in the story. Seventeen seems awful young to be so mature. Deacon and Kena learn to communicate and plan to get the toddler back. The romance is very sweet. I would consider this romance to be “PG”. I loved seeing Michael, Annie and Jackson from book 1. >This book is appropriate for a new adult (18+) audience. I am giving this book 5 stars. I felt the ending was a bit simplified in regards to getting Deacon cleared by the police and FBI, but it worked.
It’s hard to stop reading a book that gets its hooks in you and doesn’t let go. In fact, I’m having a little trouble trying to read something else having just finished this book. In this book we follow Deeks and Kena. Both have tragic pasts and 1 common thing. But they have to learn to open up.
Jordan Ford has written many book, and I have read many of them. This one however, is by far my favorite. Every time I read her work, the writing is better than the last. She knows how to keep you interested in the material and keeps you coming back for more. There is suspense and action, a car jacking and fighting. This is a book that I’d gladly read over and over again.
This book was AMAZING!!! It has quickly become my favorite in the series (and yes, I know there are only two books so far). The Fighter is all about Deeks and what he has been up to since being separated from his brother Michael. His overall character development is outstanding! I loved all the flashbacks to the ranch and his time with his Grandpa. As someone who spent a lot of time learning life lessons from my Grandpa, this book took me down a road of nostalgia and gave me all the feels. Not only will you fall in love with Deeks, but you will adore Kena on her journey to find herself. This is quickly becoming my new favorite series and I can't wait to see what happens next!
I really enjoyed reading Deeks and Kena's story. I was so routing for Deeks. He is a tough man that doesn't take anyone's crap no matter what. But at the same time, he is beautifully broken. Kena sees that in him and for some reason is drawn to him. A little twist of fate brings these two together when Deeks' life gets turned upside down. What will happen to Deeks and Kena? Can they get out of this mess?
A good book if you like the stranger to friends to lovers type of books. I liked how these two played off of each other's personalities and personal issues. Who knew they would have so much in common?
The fighter is an amazing read!! It’s the second book of the Barrett Boys Series and I’m hooked. Since the beginning I couldn’t put the book down. This YA book will have you on the edge of your seat wanting to know what will happen next. I love how each book I’m learning more about the personalities of each brother. The fighter is based on Deacon (Deeks) and Kena’s story, where an unexpected encounter happened that lead to a mission. This book is full of suspense, adventure, and compassion, with some twists along the way. I really enjoyed reading their story and I can’t wait to read what Jordan will write next.
I voluntarily leave an honest review for this advanced reader’s copy.
I thought this book was even better than the first. Kena and Deeks shared since an intense pull of attraction that it was beyond easy to feel. The emotions run thickly throughout this well written tale and they will seriously have you engaged and feeling invested. Some couples just work on every level and honestly, that it how I felt about these two. They were made for each other on the most cellular level. A very enjoyable read. This is my frank, freely posted review.
This story thoroughly pulls you in and keeps you turning the pages. Deeks and Kena were so good for each other. I can't imagine making some of the choices Kena does to stay with and help Deeks, but given her own emotional turmoil, it works for the story. I look forward to reading about the other brothers as well. This story has some swearing, but not gratuitous.
Deeks has been fighting for his life since the first time his father hurt her mother. Can he fight his last fight in order to save a little girl he must protect? Kenna’s heart is been ripped from her chest the moment her parents died. She needs to run away in order to find herself again. Can Deeks and Kenna help each other and find happiness and love again? A great and emotional story
