It’s Christmas Eve, and a harried Joe and Mary and their three children are taking the train to visit family. Suddenly, a bearded stranger with a twinkle in his eye takes a seat and begins spinning a provocative tale that intrigues, delights, and inspires. Masterfully weaving past and present through story, lessons, and devotions, The Gospel of Santa Claus follows the incredible story of Saint Nicholas, born in third century A.D., who overcomes childhood tragedy, feels called by God to take a vow of poverty, endures horrific persecution for his religious faith, and goes on to become one of the most beloved, generous, loving, and famous figures in human history. A meaningful, touching story to be shared with the entire family, Wayne Van Der Wal’s powerful debut historical novel will raise important questions, ignite hope, and reaffirm your faith in God and the human spirit.
This book was truly a labor of love by the author. You can read his conviction and beliefs throughout the entirety. He has accomplished what the title suggests: writing the gospel of Santa Claus. And so, bear in mind this is a religious book--with many, many scripture references. It has intense moments when Nicholas and other priests are persecuted. But, the author brings it back to a lighter tone that you'd expect for a book about the jolly old elf, with moments of humor even when things are going badly. I like how the two stories are entwined: St. Nicholas and Santa Claus. Well done.
This book was uneven. Sometimes it is overly simplistic and seems condescending even though it's directed primarily toward children. Other times it uses vocabulary and expresses concepts that are complex even for adults. The format of the book is inviting with the devotion then questions and a prayer. Unfortunately, the devotion and the questions are simplistically written. The bibliography is a helpful feature. That and the obvious sincerity aren't enough to save this book for me.
This story reminds me of my grandfather, my own personal Santa Claus. He never knew a stranger and was always willing to talk and tell stories. My grandfather was also completely committed to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He and my grandmother left behind a legacy of believers. I would be lost without the greatest gift ever given: Jesus Christ my Lord and Savior.
If you're looking for a new way to do advent with your family, this might be perfect for you. The author weaves the history of St. Nicholas into a modern-day tale and has arranged the whole story into 30 short segments perfect for advent. Enjoy!
I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about St. Nicholas and how his story leads to the story of Santa Claus.. It would be a good book to read to children and grandchildren.
