Rita Bradshaw was born on 1949 in Northampton, England, where she was educated as a good Christian. She met Clive, her husband, at the age of 16 andnow the magic is still there. They have three lovely children, Cara, Faye, and Benjamin, and have always had a menagerie of animals in the house, which at the present is confined to two endearing and very comical dogs who would make a great double act on TV! The children, friends, and pets all keep the house buzzing and the food cupboards empty but Helen wouldn't have it any other way. She still lives today in Northampton with her family. Although having enjoyed some wonderful holidays abroad she has never been tempted to live anywhere else, although she rather likes the idea of a holiday home close to the sea one day.
Being a committed Christian and fervent animal lover she finds spare time is always at a premium, but long walks in the countryside with her husband and dogs, meals out followed by the cinema or theatre, reading, swimming, and having friends over for dinner are all fitted in somehow. She also enjoys sitting in her wonderfully therapeutic, rambling old garden in the sun with a glass of red wine, (under the guise of resting while thinking of course!)
For years, she was a secretary. She began writing in 1990 as she approached that milestone of a birthday 40! She realized her two teenage ambitions (writing a novel and learning to drive) had been lost amid babies and hectic family life, so set about resurrecting them.
Her first novel was for Mills and Boon and was accepted after one rewrite in 1992 as Helen Brooks, and she passed her driving test (the former was a joy and the latter an unmitigated nightmare!) She has written 50 novels as well as several sagas as Rita Bradshaw.
Since becoming a full-time writer she has found her occupation one of pure joy and often surprised when her characters develop a mind of their own but she loves exploring what makes people tick and finds the old adage "truth is stranger than fiction" to be absolutely true. She would love to hear from any readers care of Mills & Boon.
A very color-by-numbers, get-out-of-debt-marriage-of-convenience plot between a slappable Mary Sue and a not so secretly besotted wanna be Alpha. *snore*
This book is halfway memorable only for the shockingly harsh treatment of a hapless ex-OW who merely existed off the page and just wanted to be left alone but the ruthless author decided to give her an extreme form of cancer that took out half her jaw and forced her to live as a recluse. It was not too subtly suggested that her decadent life of vanity, greed, and promiscuity was the direct cause of her later tragedy.
Gee whiz, I sure hope Mister Brooks never stepped out on the Missus because she doesn't seem to take too kindly to OWs in her books. They are always mercilessly slut shamed and sent on their way but this is the first disfigurement I encountered! *shudder*
Re The Marriage Solution - Helen Brooks does a sugary sweet blackmail the h into marriage to save her father trope in this one.
Needless to say our unicorn grooming, rainbow dancing and works with developmentally challenged children h is about as savvy as a concussed duckling and really should be wrapped in fluffy headgear and only allowed to sit on the sidelines at battletoads.
But her hard bitten and emotionally unavailable dad has gone bankrupt on a risky investment and taken a bunch of clients with him too. So when his bad decisions lead to a heart attack and the sharks are circling to take a bite, the h has to gear herself up in her best Tenderheart Care Bear fluffy jumper and face off with the very irate H.
The h is the sweet-hearted family nurturing black sheep. Her saintish mum has passed to a higher plane and her sister is a free lovin' tabloid news reporter, with not much empathy to spare for the father's plight. It is up to our sweet little h to try and stave off the predators while she figures out what to do with her greatly diminished father.
The Big Business Tycoon H takes one look at the fluffy sweet miss and he is all about putting a ring on that. So a marriage for business blackmail deal is born and then HB says let the big misunderstandings and some lurve club purple passion begin.
We get an H supported former flame who is now a recluse due to disfigurement from cancer, a physically challenged brother in a wheelchair, whom the H raised without a lot of help and a very shy housekeeper that the h is convinced is the seekrit love of the H.
There is roofie kisses and angry kitten outbursts and the h is convinced the H is a man just like her emotionally distant father. But HB shows us the h's dad just doesn't have the emotional language to communicate how much he loves his Care Bear daughter, who is the image of his beloved dead wife.
This big dad-has-feelings revelation to the h eventually leads to the h expressing her disappointment in the H when the shy housekeeper runs away. The h thinks the H is pining for the girl and that he has no feelings, except for lust, for her own little fluffy headed self.
Actually it is the H's brother who is in love with the lady and the h is completely confused when the H is yelling at his brother to engage the motor on his racing chair and go after the woman - which the brother successfully does and that is one couple set up.
This leads to a tearful h recrimination scene where the h relates her little OW frets to the H and he looks gobsmacked as he realizes that his kids with the h are all going to need special tutoring.
Then he decides that as an emotionally repressed, but basically decent HP Alpha Male, he is a terrible person for blackmailing a concussed and non-imprinted duckling and he tells the h that she is free and the divorce settlement will be mighty.
Too late, the h has lost her rosy glow shades and there is another little tear-fest and a spirit guide visit from the h's sainted mum, who tells the sweet nitwit to go plead her love to the H. After a final message from mum that she loves her little fluffy pumpkin, the h runs back to the H and declares her love.
The H decides with such delicious adoration and a luscious body like that, the H can hire a plethora of kid tutors.
So he throws inhibitions to the wind and declares his Gigantic Love for the h back and we leave the two of them lurvin' it up in pink sparkly purple passion for another HB Just Visiting HPlandia outing.

This was a nice little tale of a smitten hero and an oblivious heroine who saw too many similarities between her tycoon father and the wealthy, hard-bitten CEO who has proposed a marriage to secure an heir in exchange for covering her father's debts.
There are so many cliches and stereotypes doing their duty for this Mary Sue and Gary Stu, that I have to list a few:
They're perfectly perfect people with only a big misunderstanding keeping them apart. Not a lot of angst because the hero is so obvious, but worth a read if you want a sweet romance.
This was actually better than the last few books I have read by Helen Brooks. I am finding that I don't care for her earlier work mostly because her heroines are rather weak. This heroine started out strong, but about halfway through the book she became ridiculous, jumping to conclusions and perpetuating misunderstanding after misunderstanding. Her actions, just lessened her in my mind and weakened a rather fun read.
However, this was still an entertaining tale and Helen Brooks did a great job in making the MOC trope quite refreshing. I also thought the hero was well written and I could tell from the very beginning that he was a "goner" for the heroine.
Could have been stronger, but still somewhat enjoyable. 3stars.
I always long for apparently cold-cruel-ruthless Hs who turn out to be totally besotted with their hs.... this novel is a really good example of this trope. There is angst, misunderstanding, hate-attraction-hidden love. I appreciate the writing style of this author: up to now I was never disappointed by her books. If you look for a classic old-style HP, try it!
Carlton Reef offers to save Katie White's father from bankruptcy if she marries him.
This plot is so clichéd, yet Helen Brooks pulls it off beautifully. The characters are likeable and believable. Even the Big Misunderstanding is not that far-fetched, as we know of Katie's insecurity. The only part I didn't understand is Carlton's confusion over why Katie doesn't like or trust him. During their first meeting (on the phone) and subsequent confrontation he is rude and threatening. It really should come as no surprise that she is somewhat ambivalent towards him. Putting that aside, he's actually quite a nice guy, unlike the aggressive alpha males we normally see in this plot device. Don't get me wrong, he's still very much an alpha, but he's confident not arrogant and overbearing. This was my first book by Helen Brooks and I really enjoyed it.
Carlton Reef wanted a bride—and Katie needed the money! His proposal was outrageous, but simple. He would pay her family's debts if Katie would agree to become his wife….
But what possible reason could this ruthless, sexy bachelor have for wanting sweet, gentle Katie? She didn't trust him—yet she had no choice. Marriage was the only solution. But did Carlton intend to be a husband in name only, or did he expect Katie to honor their wedding bargain by sharing his bed
I read the Harlequin Treasury version available on Hoopla. It had a lot of typos from the program they ran the book through. Fortunately, they lessened as the book went on, but it was interesting to figure out that B=fl (Butter was supposed to be flutter, for example). I've never seen that kind of error before.
Katie's father, a no-nonsense businessman with a heart of lead, has a heart attack. When an investor calls, furious, she tries to tell him her father is ill. The investor gives her an hour to get her father to call back, but Katie's father is hospitalized and the secretary won't take her call. Furious herself, Katie goes to Carlton Reef's office to give him a piece of her mind and learns that her father has lost everything.
Shattered, Katie hurls insults and loses her temper every time she has to be around Carlton. When Jennifer, Katie's sister and a no-nonsense journalist with a heart of lead, arrives back at the family home and sees the unattached millionaire, she throws her live-in boyfriend out and tries to seduce him/get an interview. Instead, Carlton kisses Katie and then comes up with a "brilliant" plan: if Katie marries him, Carlton will restore the family's property and fortune back to pre-heart attack days. (If Katie's dad is as involved in business as Katie says, I don't know how you conceal this at all. He's sixty, not stupid.) Katie, the big softie, lasts for only a few hours before she's forced to admit that losing the family home will probably kill her dad. And for all that she thinks her dad doesn't love her, Katie can't take the risk with his health.
Carlton introduce his fiancée to his paraplegic brother Joe and their housekeeper Maisie. Katie works with special needs kids, so she's taken aback but not entirely unprepared. Maisie, however, is something else. Carlton and Joe are so gentle and attentive to her that she gets very suspicious, but Carlton's kisses are addictive and she resolves just to ignore the situation. Katie has fallen in love with Carlton, but realizes that he is exactly like her father and will never love her back.
Jennifer tells Katie that Carlton has a mistress in London the morning before her wedding (because she's evil; their dad even confirms that he never loved her). Katie confronts Carlton, who reveals that he bought his first love a flat after skin cancer ended her modeling career. She's a successful--but reclusive--artist now (who I assume is paying Carlton back for the apartment?) and he hasn't loved her since their relationship ended thirteen years ago. Katie accepts this and when Carlton tells her he has loved someone since then, immediately suspects Maisie is that someone. Carlton, of course, was trying to tell Katie that he loves her, but she rushes out and they get married without clearing up the misunderstanding. Her dad confronts her and tells her he loves her and shut his emotions off after her mom died. Katie doesn't dare hope Carlton actuallyloves her as well.
All of this comes to a head during their honeymoon when Maisie runs away and Joe calls Carlton in desperation. Katie accuses Carlton of having Maisie as his mistress and Carlton is like "Like I told you before, I love you; how dare you accuse me of this" and Katie realizes she has messed up Big Time.
They fly back to England to help the heartbroken Joe find Maisie, because of course the pair are also in love. Katie then tries the rare Romance Heroine Grovel, but it doesn't really work and she basically dissolves into screaming that he can't leave her and collapses into sobs. They make love, which does work, and finally talk and promise to talk things through thoroughly and stop being miscommunication's bitches.
This was wonderfully angsty and addicting. I tried to stop reading before bedtime and just couldn't.

This was a good story, one of those where the H comes along to save the day (in this case, her father's business and their family home) if the h marries him, each of them hiding their true feelings, with her claiming she's just doing this because of her father's heart condition and him acting as if all he wants is to get her into bed. While they're lying to themselves, there's secondary situations, like the h's older sister who's her exact opposite, isn't above causing some trouble, and doesn't bother to hide the fact that she'd like to see the H added to her list of lovers. There's also her father, who never got over his wife's death and covers his true feelings with meaningless affairs and by being cold and distant to the h, who reminds him so much of her mother it hurts to be near her.
Then, there's the H's younger brother, paralyzed in a car accident and pushing away the young woman he loves because he can physically be a husband but not a father. As so often happens, his story should have been a separate book.
There's some silliness with the h being suspicious about one of the H's ex-girlfriends (thanks to her sister's big mouth) but the H's brother helps explain all that. However, the stuff about the woman (a former model) being so vain that she refused to have a small mole removed, and it turned out to be malignant and left her with a ravaged face, was really over-the-top! I liked the part about her becoming an artist and living in a kind of artist's colony. I guess the cancer part was supposed to be retribution for her once having cheated on the H. A bit harsh!!
What made this story a bit different is the h going too far (assuming the H's young housekeeper was his mistress) and having to be the one to grovel, something that's usually reserved for the H.
