I'm not a newbie to watercolour but I was still interested to see what this book has to offer. And in all honesty, the cover is way too pretty to pass. And I was delighted to find out that the inside is even prettier than the cover. Love the work which was done on this one.

This book is very detailed and suitable for beginners, the author takes you step by step through watercolouring. You will learn about brushes and papers which is something I knew when I started.

I surprisingly liked the "Getting know your colours" part; I never gave this so much thought nor did I go and play with the colours just to see what I will be able to create with them. However, this part gave me so many ideas

I adored the parts on the diffusion effect and gradation since these two I'm still struggling with. I'm excited to go and use the tips from the author.

The part involving painting the flowers is magnificent! I cannot decide which one is my favourite if Carnations or Hortensia. All the flowers were so pretty and so easy to paint! And I could see where I went wrong when I tried to paint them before! I'm looking forward to seeing the results next time.

I'm definitely planning to take out the watercolour paints out this weekend to create something! Violet circlet is a must for me, one of the most beautiful designs featured it this book!

Wow how beautiful this book is! First of all, I didn’t know that you can learn so much about colors. I love the exercises to practice all of the colors to work together. Great painting guide for beginners which explains all the details and techniques that I can use not only to paint flowers. After careful reading and practicing all the directions I really created beautiful flowers. I can’t wait to send my first cards :)

Thank you to NetGalley and publisher for a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

Some lovely ideas for things to do with the skill learnt too
Very useful guide.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an Arc of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

The subtitle for this book is "The beginner's guide to flower painting for journal pages, handmade stationary, and more". I want to learn how to paint my journal pages, so this was a perfect find.

DIY Watercolor Flowers starts out by explaining the different types of materials you can find and which ones will work best for the techniques presented. I loved the next section on choosing colors, mixing them, and how to create your color palette. Different techniques are shown next, with tips on how to get the best results throughout. There are a number of exercises to try using what you have just learned, and also a section on digitizing your creations.

The flowers themselves are next, with step by step instructions to draw them from multiple angles and configurations (bud, half opened, fully opened).

Perhaps my favorite part of the book is the section on composition. I feel sometimes the part of actually using new techniques is glossed over in books, but DIY Watercolor Flowers goes in depth into combining different flower types and arrangement styles in the same step by step manner.

Finally, the book is just plain beautiful. Between the photography and watercolor images themselves it is a treat to read. This book is a must to anyone who would like to try their hand at painting flowers.

It took me some time to read this. I had to sit with my paint brushes so I could follow through. Great instructions, easy to follow and pictures to guide you through... Not to blame the book but my flowers never come out that nice. Might be the skills.

I like reading about step by step instructions and that's what the book had. I wish they had a bigger variety of flowers and more complicated flowers also. Overall a great book for someone who is just starting to do some watercoloring.

Thank you Netgalley and SewandSo for the ARC. Can't wait to see what beautiful flowers my nieces can paint.

This book is intensely beautiful and informative! I am a fairly good with a pencil and sketchbook, but throw color in there and I go from 37 back to about age 4. It’s not good! What I discovered through this book is that it’s technique I am missing more than anything else! I love the step-by-step tutorials! I am extremely visual. Text confuses me because I never understand what instructions are talking about. Visual instructions with pictures, though, are what I need at least, if not video. This book provided enough photos for me to understand everything she was teaching and it did it beautifully!

Thank you F & W Media and Netgalley for an ARC in return of my honest review.

This is an absolutely gorgeous book that made me want to get water colours out and play right there and then. As a beginning artist I loved the way the book showed how to draw flowers from different views and gave lots of great, basic knowledge on colours, mixing and gradients.

The artistry within the book is delightful and makes a beautiful gift.

This is a gorgeous and fun book to help you learn to paint watercolor flowers. The author goes into color theory at the start and then leads you through some exercises to get the hang of painting watercolors and using gradients. Then she leads you through painting a variety of common flowers like roses, peonies, carnations, etc. The last section shows pieces to paint using these flowers. I love the style of the flowers and the step by step pictures seem like something that not just I could follow along with successfully but my kids too.

I read a digital ARC of this book for the purpose of review.

Originally published on my blog: Nonstop Reader.

DIY Watercolor Flowers is a tutorial guide to watercolor floral painting for beginners or artists who want to increase their facility with the medium.
Due out 30th April 2019 from SewandSo, it's 160 pages and available in paperback format. Author Marie Boudon is a self taught artist/educator with an engineering background.

The cover art is indicative of the whimsical stylized flowers and plants included in the book. The use of color and the ways the author puts together the tutorial compositions are very appealing. This guide presupposes no prior expertise; even beginners will find enough instruction in the introductory chapter sections (~25% of the page content) to source materials and gain enough familiarity with the tools to progress through the remainder.

The main tutorials are grouped into a directory of plants (roses, peonies, dahlias, foliage, etc) and then 7 specific projects which include referenced pages to the plants used in the project along with palette and colorway instruction. The page references are a brilliant little feature that really save time when flipping back and forth to find step by step instructions.

The projects are appealing, charming, and simple. They will make lovely cards and diary/journal enhancements.

Beautifully presented and executed.

Five stars; I'll definitely be dragging my watercolors out this weekend.

Possibly worth noting: The book was published in French in 2018 as Fleurs à l’aquarelle : Une initiation. I did not see any translation credits in my eARC, but the translation work is seamlessly expert and it doesn't read as though it's been translated.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

I have been watercoloring for years and this book was still so much fun to review. The first chapter talks a lot about the basic techniques including paint, brushes, paper and just learning how to mix and use color. This section was a great reminder for me of certain things and I especially enjoyed the information on mixing colors and creating a palette. I am not a trained artist but love creating art. Bible Journaling, cardmaking and scrapbooking are a few of the hobbies where I love the opportunity to use watercolors. Bible Journaling is probably the number 1 place where I love to use watercolors. They usually do not bleed through the Bible pages and you can still see the text through he paint.

My favorite section in this book and the reason I will be purchasing a physical copy of this book is Chapter 2: Plant Directory. This has to be one of the best how to paint flowers step by step that I have seen recently. Most books will show the perspective by using a pen or pencil but I love that this is actually watercoloring painting step by step. I have tried multiple times to paint a poppy and anemone and mine have not quiet looked like theirs. After following their step by step instructions I was able to begin making it look like the real flowers. The 3rd chapter in this book is also great because it talks about the flower compositions. This is important on learning how to space flowers out when you are trying to make a bouquet of flowers. Peonies are probably one of my favorite flowers and the information about painting peonies and the peony pattern made me smile.

This is an excellent book for someone new to watercoloring or for the someone that has been using watercolor for years. I love learning new ideas and how to make watercoloring easier.

Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to review this book.

I have purchased my fair share of watercolors, but nothing ever turns out the way I want it to, probably because I jump in and don't know what I'm doing. I loved the first half of this book that focused on value, saturation, creating palates, technique for blending, etc. That's all information I probably should have looked into before picking up a brush and pretending like I knew what I was doing. I can't wait to give some of her exercises a try.

I was underwhelmed with the second half of the book, which is the how-to paint florals section. It starts with a flower/plant directory, which shows each flower as a 4 step process. However, step one is already so detailed and looks better than any attempt I would ever be able to make as a final product, let alone just the first step. I haven't even attempted anything yet and I'm already frustrated, because I know my step 1 won't ever look like that. I was hoping there would be more of a breakdown, like "paint this shape" to kick things off, rather than step 1 of painting a rose being "paint a rose." I may give it a shot, but I don't have high hopes or expectations of myself :/

Thanks Netgalley for the ARC!

This book was very difficult to maneuver in digital format. I would very highly recommend using it in print form so as to make better direct comparisons.

The structure was marvelous despite the discombobulated feeling. The author not only teaches you the how but also the way of painting with watercolors. This books content was so easy to follow I almost feel like, with some practice, I, too, can paint just about anything. A lot of painting requires some natural ability combined with technique. What is so wonderful about watercolor painting is that it is built upon. If you want to add more color or take some away it is possible all with the use ( or lack thereof) of water. As long as your basic starting materials are correct the medium is impressively versatile. I enjoyed this book and I would recommend it to anyone interested in watercolors. The ease of practical application is something to be admired. This book is easier to follow than an instruction manual for self assembly furniture, and much less frustrating. I found painting to be cathartic.

Who doesn’t remember painting with watercolors when they were in elementary school? I remember that white plastic box with the primary colors smile. But I am no artist and that was years ago…and yet this book made me go to the local craft store and buy some paper, paints and brushes so I could explore them all over again as an adult!

I love the simple explanation of techniques and the easy to follow instructions to painting a few of your own flowers. Will I be showing my work any time soon? Not likely, but I will be enjoying the colors, creativity and reconnecting with happier and simpler times.

A pleasure to read and even more fun when you get your hands on the paints and begin painting. What a great book that took me from reading to doing and brought my emotions and memories along for the ride!

I've been doing watercolor for a couple of years now, but I still consider myself a newbie. I always envy all those beautiful floral paintings you see on Pinterest. Now with this book I have been able to learn step by step how to make all kinds of watercolor flowers! I love how Marie at the start of the book gives you a solid foundation for watercolor (and specifically what is needed for painting flowers), but at the back breaks down each individual flowers into easy to follow steps. It's a great book for anyone wanting to learn how to paint flowers. Just keep in mind that Marie's style is very loose and whimsical. If you are looking for something more realistic then this is not the book for you.

*Digital copy provided by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!

This book is beautiful - both the cover and the inside! I just love Marie Boudon's art style - her flowers and designs are absolutely gorgeous.

The book is divided into three parts: Basic Techniques, Plant Directory and Flower Compositions. I liked the step-by-step instructions, and they seemed clear and easy to follow. Unfortunately, I didn't have any supplies with me to try these techniques. I'd be interested in looking at this book again once it's published, so I could see if I could achieve the intended results. I'm definitely a beginner!

The flower compositions are beautiful, and provide a great resource of final designs to achieve, once you have mastered the basics.

I am always obsessed with being able to draw and paint flowers. I love them so much in real life that I always try to capture them in my art and can never really do them justice.

Boudon’s book has three main sections: Basic Techniques, Plant Directory and Flower Compositions. The first section gives you watercolor techniques: how to overlay, how to create transparent layers, how to blend, how to contrast, etc. She also reviews brushes, papers, paint of course.

Then the plant directory has: roses, peonies, carnations, dahlias, anemones, poppies, and foliage. She has small detail flowers, too. All of the steps are simple (well they look simple and of course they take a lot of practice to master.) and relatively easy to follow.

The last section puts it all together with some lovely compositions. Frames, circlets, bouquets, patters, streamers, etc. This was my favorite section of course. There are step by steps but not as many as I tend to crave. Having said that, if you practice all the plants in the directory, I have no doubt you can get these bouquets.

Overall this is a lovely book for people who want to start painting flowers. It’s not super advanced but it will get you started on painting flowers in no time!

In general, the design of the book is very clean and easy to read.
One of the parts that I liked the most and is representative of the artist's taste is the selection of favorite mixes and palettes.
Each example is accompanied by step by step images, they are simple and very clear, for the realization of flowers (Plant Directory, roses, dahlias, anemones, etc). In later sections the artist explains floral compositions and foliage frames that can be used for gift cards, contains suggestions and color blends. The examples are colorful, delicate and for a feminine profile.

My sincere appreciation to the Publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to review the book

Thank you F & W Media and NetGalley for the opportunity read and review this book.

What a delightful, instructional, watercolor book. This was described as a book for watercolor beginners. However, the techniques demonstrated in this book are well done and the resulting paintings look to be more advanced than beginner work. The photos and illustrations are eye candy.
I have read many watercolor painting books but this is the first one that made me want to rush to my watercolor paints and start painting flowers like those in this book. This book demands a spot on my shelf of painting books.

I'm not an expert with watercolor techniques, but since my curiosity has grown with my little girl's requests, this book has been such a great opportunity to learn something more not only about colors but also how to best combine them to create your own palette and about the right material to use.

The explanations are really easy to understand, even for a beginner, so I'm happy to recommend this book to anyone who is approaching to watercolors, and especially hopes to create beautiful watercolor flowers with some useful tips.

I love the idea of creating flowering and leaves making them into watercolor cards. I am looking forward to practicing and creating many cards, borders, and paintings using these techniques and adding my own twist to them. I plan on using them in my bullet journal, my bible phrase journaling with the phrase in the center of the design, and for cards. I never thought to scan my work to create additional cards. Prior to reading, all of my cards were one of a kind and different. I love the idea of being able to print our for cards or small prints.
