“Fury of Angels”, the third installment in the “Angels in L.A.” series by JC Andrijeski, is (until now) the very best book in a series that keeps improving with any new installment. After all the struggles of the last case, Dags is intended to gain some kind of control over his powers, being able to be aware of his surroundings during the ‘change’ and not end up naked in the full view of every one on sight afterwards, risking to be locked away on a cell, can only be an advantage. Classes with Ty seems to be going well, until Kara calls for help on her new case, a gruesome murder on Koreatown, with obvious links to the supernatural. Her list of suspects begins and probably end with Dags’ best friend, who might be or might too be the one and only Angel of Darkness himself. Dags share her suspicions; he even believes him to be the driving force behind the demons on Dags pursuit and if push come to shove…. wings are going to hit the fan because angels are forbidden from killing each other. And to top it all Phoenix (who Dags is intended to keep clear of all things “angelic” for her own good) gets drawn into the mess.
This is exactly how Urban Fantasy should be conceived, it has it all:
• atmosphere (noir L.A, do I need to say more);
• background story (a guy whose life has been forever changed by unexpected events);
• plot (supernatural P.I. who juggles his official investigation business in Hollywood with his fate as demon hunter);
• and then…
then there is Dags Jourdain, said P.I. and the most interesting guy ever to glaze the UF verse. Imagine Angel (yes, the one from Buffy) without senseless brooding and real wit dry humor, and an uncanny power for accurate observation (usually called cynicism by those who don’t have it), a tendency to end up naked in the most inappropriate places (don’t blame him! It’s a side effect of his power), and a very pragmatic approach to (his supernatural) life, the fact that he is also easy on the eyes is just a bonus, did I mention he is demon hunter angel. There are not enough stars in Hollywood to rate this guy 😊.
JC Andrijeski has created an amazing character, infusing him with enough humor, credibility, charisma and intelligence to make him come alive throughout the pages, almost perfect, almost because, there is caveat though: once you meet Dags you would not be able to escape his charm, the lure of the….. angel will have you forever in its grasp. A fully addictive series, beware before reading, there is no coming back, which is already a senseless warning, because if you are already here, you have already been hooked for the last two books already 😉
