I would say the Kase-san series has always been very good, but this latest volume is pretty much perfect. It’s very cool to see Kase and Yamada actually in university - it’s a setting mined very infrequently in any manga, let alone yuri.
There’s also a lot of truth at the heart of this volume, which deals with two of the biggest threats to any high school relationship - distance and university. Suddenly you can’t see one another nearly as much and your pool of friends expands and that can lead to complications (and does). The writing here conveys just how much work you need to put in to make a relationship work under these sorts of circumstances, regardless of gender.
Story-wise, Yamada’s the heart of the conflict here - she is easily the more naive character of the two and doesn’t tend to realize how much trouble she might be causing. In one specific instance, you can spot Chekhov’s honourifics the second they show up and it isn’t long before shots are fired.
We also get two fun new characters in this volume and check in with the usual crew. Kase and Yamada are such a good couple together that it’s always a fun read, even when there’s drama afoot. For all I said above, there’s a lot of great character growth for Yamada here too and she’s really coming into her own in Tokyo.
On an aesthetic level, the art has gotten even better - easily one of the best drawn manga I’m reading right now. It effortlessly shifts from reaction panels to gorgeous regular art and it’s packed with details.
Throw in one chapter that’s purely four koma comics and a sweet denouement and you have one heck of a good read. One of the best titles I’ve read this year.
