The Mistletoe Problem

Rate this book
Noah's winter holiday seasons tend to be busy but uneventful. Most of his time is spent running his mildly magical gift shop and trying not to obsess over Robin, his much too appealing seasonal employee. When Robin bursts into the back room of the shop to tell him that something is wrong with the mistletoe, Noah realizes this year is going to be a bit more interesting. But it's fine. All he has to do is retrieve all the spelled mistletoe before it causes kiss-filled chaos all over town while keeping his hands—and lips—off Robin. Simple, right? No problem at all.

This was cute. I love witchy magic and to have it be part of my Christmas just made me smile huge.

I loved the little nudge of magic and even more the super sweet happy ending.

I'd have loved this to have been a full length story, I really enjoyed the characters personalities and can only imagine what could go on in the store on a daily basis.

Fun.

This is a silly, sweet story, just perfect for reading over a holiday weekend. Noah is a very present character — helped by the first person point of view — and the reader is dropped right into his frazzled, anxious, confused and besotted head as he can’t stop thinking about the kiss. He’s always had a thing for Noah. They’ve known each other for years, worked with each other for years, but while Noah can stare at Robin’s hands and imagine touching them or being touched by them, he can’t look Robin in the eye and ask him for a date. It would be … unprofessional! He’s Robin’s boss, which means Robin is off limits. Even if Robin felt the same way. Which, of course, he doesn’t. He couldn’t.

This is an adorable Christmas read with a bit of magic and lots of love. The magic element isn't strong and just nice. Noah owns a gift shop with his secret crush and seasonal part timer Robin. Very soon after the start of the story it was found out that Noah has a mistletoe problem. His batch of mistletoe were 'cursed' and without spoiler, it basically make people get physical with each other. So both Noah and Robin had to manage the crisis by recalling all the mistletoe sold. Definitely a recommended Christmas short for readers looking for a bit of joy and sweetness.

Cute short story with humour and some more mundane magic. Starts out very strong but doesn't end up blowing my mind. I'll be reading something else from this author.

2 stars for being sweet but unfortunately there is nothing else there. No real magic I’m afraid.

This is a short novella surrounding the magical shop, Charming, its owner, Noah, and his seasonal employee, Robin. Noah owns Charming and has loved it since he was a kid, “…trailing after my mom and looking at all the neat things on the shelves.” It also happens to be how he figured out that he has magical powers, when he saw a piece of fluorite in the window was glowing. “That’s how I found out we were witches and that we had magic. But magic wasn’t some big, powerful, showy force. It was gentle and subtle most of the time.” I loved that.

Noah has been attracted to Robin since they began working together but refuses to acknowledge it. He considers any type of attraction inappropriate, as he is Robin’s boss. When they receive a cursed shipment of mistletoe, things get pushed to the forefront. The mistletoe makes people, well, make out! While Robin tracks down everyone they sold it to and they make plans to collect it all, they accidentally fall victim to the mistletoe themselves and share a kiss. Robin is all about it, Noah is mortified. “It was not okay. t was hideously unprofessional and I should have been far more careful.” Despite Robin’s best efforts, Noah can’t get past it and starts acting weird – hiding out in his office and avoiding Robin.

And he keeps apologizing. “Look, I’m sorry about the kiss, alright?” He looked at me like I was especially stupid.” Hate to say it, Noah, but you are really testing his last nerve. They don’t see each other outside the holiday season so at times it was difficult to see why Noah was so adamant that they ignore the attraction.

They have to make pick-ups of the mistletoe and this throws them together even more. Robin is really trying to explain to Noah the mistletoe didn’t make them be attracted, it just sort of softened inhibitions. Robin has also had enough of Noah’s denials and apologies. “And for the love of God can we agree that the first one was totally mutual before I have to kill you in your sleep?” I really liked Robin.

Noah does eventually remove his head from his butt and listen to what Robin is trying to tell him. The mistletoe problem itself isn’t a horrible one and is pretty easily solved. The story was cute and holiday, a nice chaser for a longer story.

I love Geneva Vand's books so I was thrilled to hear that she would be releasing a Christmas novella before the holidays. This is a warm and quick read about a magic shop called Charming and its owner, Noah, and his seasonal employee, Robin. Noah owns Charming and has loved it since he was a child before he found out that he had magical powers and that his family were witches.

Noah has been attracted to Robin since he was first hired but he refuses to cross the employer/employee boundary. After they receive a cursed shipment of mistletoe, his crush gets pushed to the forefront. The mistletoe makes people make out! Those scenes were hilarious especially after Robin and Noah find themselves making out underneath a cursed sprig. Of course, Noah tells Robin that nothing can happen because of their work relationship. Robin and Noah team up to track down every customer that purchased the cursed mistletoe. In the end, Robin convinces Noah to change his mind and both men end up with a wonderful gift just in time for Christmas :) I really enjoyed this quick and sweet holiday read :) As always, another perfect 5-star hit by Geneva Vand!

Curses for smooches

An amusing story that has its pitfall in the most traditional of ways - lack of communication. Some cursed mistletoe (or is it blessed?) is making people act on their romantic impulses with those they meet under it. Revealing some unexpected things to others it also has shop owner Noah making out with his employee Robin and then immediately regretting it. With the busy season Noah needs Robin to keep working and indeed picking up all the mistletoe from the community they have to work closely together. But Noah is terrified he has crossed a line as an employer, while Robin keeps trying to talk to him about it as he runs away. Communication goes a long way to clear it all.up but until then Noah spends the story in quite the tizzy as he worries about his business and his actions and tries to fix Christmas.

Magic w/out feeling magical… 🪄😕

I was quite excited about this ☝️, magic, romance and intrigue. However, within it’s 55 pages it all came out rather flat. That’s the problem with short stories, they haven’t any time to “draw” you in. If they are not compelling from the onset, their time is already up ⌛️.
I guess that was the most disappointing thing about this short story is that it already came with all the necessary elements, but the words never stood out on the page for me. It’s not that it was a bad story, just for some reason even with all of the right elements, pleasant protagonists, a novel premise to a normally conventional situation, just came out flat.
I’m not damaged having read it nor am I disappointed that I did, it’s more that it had the opportunity to be more than it was for it’s 55 pages… 😕

A Bulldozer Named Robin

Noah Bennet owns a magic book shop. It's the Christmas season so he is selling mistletoe again this year.

Unlike the previous years, these mistletoe are somehow "cursed", Noah's longtime seasonal salesclerk, Robin exclaims. People are kissing people, and not people they should be kissing!

Accidentally, Noah and Robin end up under some bewitched mistletoe and kiss each other. Robin is elated but Noah is confounded and conflicted.

This is a quick read. It's clever, humorous, lighthearted, and sweet. Great writing and imagination graces this magical tale. There aren't any steamy scenes and that's okay. If it was included, it just would've been gratuitous. I recommend this book.

Noah runs a shop that caters to people with magic and people without. When it turns out that the mistletoe that they received is causing people to kiss when they might not necessarily mean to, Noah ends up kissing the employee he's had a crush on for awhile. When they have to work together to get the mistletoe back, Noah is concerned about what that will do for their working relationship.

This was cute, although kind of felt as though everything hinged on the mistletoe, so there wasn't much story outside of that. And Noah remained completely oblivious for far too long. I did appreciate that he was concerned about the power and consent, but it almost felt as though he belaboured the point.

Short and delightfully sweet

This story was one big, goofy grin inducing collection of words and sentences, and I loved it. No angst, and all heart. It may not be high heat, but it had some steamy kisses, and some hilarious hijinks of the amorous sort.

The characters were absolutely charming. I want more.

This was well written and completely engaging. I am going on an Amazon search for more books by this author. This was the first book I’ve read by them, and they’re going on my must read list, for sure!

I mean, this was fine? It wasn't very long or very in depth. A lot had already happened off-book so by the time we dip into the story it's all rather anti-climactic.

The mystery of people making out with randos was kind of funny, but that leaves a very scary and creepy storyline for the lady who kept kissing her dog. NO THANK YOU

I just read this and already forgot most of it, so ehh, but ymmv.

Short Funny & Magical Romance

A sweet and amusing Christmas story with a little bit of magic thrown in. Noah was very uptight and Robin had to use a lot of persuasion to make him see what was right under his nose, that they were both lusting after each other and it had nothing to do with mistletoe!

Magic mistletoe, secret crushes and holiday cheer.
Noah has crushed on Robin for a while, but as his boss, he can't act on it. But, when they get a shipment of spelled mistletoe, all bets are off.

Delightful and fluffy Christmas book with just the right touch of magic. Noah owns a shop that sells items to magic and non-magic users. Robin has worked for him for a few years. They like each other but Noah seems to be reluctant to move forward.. until they get a shipment of mistletoe. A new to me author with such a light breezy touch. Very engaging read.

The Mistletoe Problem
By Geneva Vand

When a batch of mistletoe is cursed it causes issues for customers and the store owner.

This was short and sweet, but didn't have enough chemistry between them to leave warm feelings in my heart.

So creative! I've never read Geneva Vand before, but I'll definitely be looking to read their other books soon. I enjoyed the characters, and the romance was fine, but what really got me was how fun the paranormal aspect of The Mistletoe Problem.
