Alpha Market #1

The Purchased Alpha

Rate this book
In a realm where omegas rule, Sebastian is king—almost.

As the oldest brother of three, Prince Sebastian is first in line to inherit the Kingdom of Lacehaven, a wealthy nation where omegas dominate the hierarchy. Sebastian wants for nothing. He has money, power, and beauty.

But he’s missing one crucial thing—a child. Without an heir, Sebastian forfeits his birthright. Fortunately, the monarchy has a traditional solution in place. A plethora of pedigreed alphas, the finest in all of Lacehaven, await his selection. All Sebastian needs to do is choose.

But Sebastian dismisses them all. He wants a challenge. And what the Prince wants, he always gets.

There’s only two ways out of the Alpha Market—purchase or death.

Rourke gave up everything but his last name when he registered for purchase at the Alpha Market. In exchange for his subservience, his younger brother is set for life, and that was a sacrifice Rourke was willing to make.

But Rourke refuses to spend his life as some omega’s toy. He’ll fight tooth and tail to protect his pride, and he’ll be damned if an omega tries to take that away from him.

Even if the Prince himself pays Rourke’s price.

The Purchased Alpha is a 65,000 word omegaverse novel featuring a fated mates concept with a twist. Mpreg drives the story but is not the main focus. It is darker than some of my other books, but rest assured it has a HEA like always. It includes enemies-to-lovers trope, steamy scenes, no cheating and no cliffhangers.

I didn't care with what's happening most of the time. Should've dnfed it, yes, but for some reason I decided to brave myself through. Damn, I just want a good alpha-omega story where I could lose myself into it. This clearly wasn't that.

I found this story in one of my book hunts and thought: A world where omegas are the kings and alphas are lower than dirt? I need to read this!

Now that I have I must say this was a decent attempt, the story is as the blurb says and even though some plots were weak and some didn't have consistency, the two main characters were nice to each other and they were cute together.
I didn't understand how they fell in love, a moment they were hating each other and then falling. Yes, this is a shifter book, but not even that was the reason for it because in this world they didn't know about fated mates, so the transition wasn't done right.

Still it was sweet, interesting enough worldbuilding. I think if the author gave it a little more thought it would have been awesome, but in the end I did enjoyed it. 🥰❤

I enjoyed this new take on Omega/Alpha pairings in the ABO universe :) My only wish is that there was more world building.

the book was so short so obviously the pacing is horrible. i didn’t care about any of the characters, especially sebastian. the whole “omg we find out we are fated mates after 3 days of knowing each other” is kinda crazy.. maybe if the book was longer it would be better, but i also didn’t care for the writing style either sooooo…..

I thought Sebastian, since he's a Prince and an omega, will be kind and caring but I was totally wrong. Sebastian treated Rourke so bad, he acted like he owned the world, acting high and mighty, not so lovable. Meanwhile Rourke is easy to forgive Sebastian.

The reviews were very mixed for this one, but none of my goodreads friends seems to have read this (maybe because of the really ridiculous and embarrassing cover - this really is the cliche of a gay romance novel, you wouldn't want to "get caught" reading).
Anyhow, I didn't trust the reviews and wanted to see for myself.
At the end I am really glad I gave this a chance, I think this was a raw diamond - yes it lacked the fine cut that would really make it shine, but for me it was immensely entertaining.
Already the blurb had me hooked: a society were Omegas rule and Alpha's are only needed for breeding was a nice change in a genre that is usually quite predictable (often boring with fated mates falling in love the minute they see each other). Here you have a nice enemies to lovers story, rich guy /poor guy contrast that was fun to read.
Yes, it had some weaknesses, as many reviewers mention the world building was not very strong, the story sometimes didn't make a lot of sense and the prince acted like a spoiled brat having no idea about his future kingdom and its inhabitants.
So what could have been outstanding, at the end was "just" a good story, but after reading some really bad ones recently, I was more than happy with that.
3.5 stars for me and I will look out for more from this new to me author!

Nice!

A dark but fun flip on the A/B/O universe, where Alphas are at the bottom and can be bought by rich Omegas. Honestly I’d love to see more Omegaverse books like this. Looking forward to the brothers’ stories.

Ok, wow that was so good! The Purchased Alpha is definitely the author's darkest book to date. At least, in my opinion. I'm used to a Hawke Oakley book being fluffy and sugary sweet with minimal angst. There's also a lot of insta love. Which isn't a bad thing! I love those books but that just made me appreciate this darker work a whole lot more. When we first meet Sebastian, he is haughty, cruel, sharply intelligent, and believes alphas are no better than dogs. I actually didn't know how to feel about him at first, but he definitely grew on me by the end. And then we have Roarke. He is a gentle giant with an extreme dislike for omegas. But who can blame him after what they've put him through? He is an alpha for purchase at the market. Seb, needing to produce an heir but not wanting to choose any of the pedigreed alphas, he buys Roarke's contract binding the two to each other. This is an enemies to lovers romance so their developing feelings have plenty of time to simmer. No insta love here. In fact, I was actually wondering while I was reading how these two can possibly come to love each other. It sort of reminded me of Damen and Laurent's relationship in Captive Prince. I really appreciated the slow build up to their realizing their love for each other. Both have to work to undo the preconceived stereotypes they've been spoon fed. Especially Sebastian. I also loved that the omegas are the ones in power here. It's so refreshing after reading dozens of omegaverse books where omegas are treated like breeding cattle. The world building was also interesting. I loved the canine elements incorporated into the culture and mythos. This book is nowhere near as light hearted as other books by this author. I sped through this in one sitting, biting my nails wondering how things were going to resolve themselves. A lot of shocking plot twists happened that had me on the edge of my seat. This is also one of Oakley's longer works, but I still wanted more. The Purchased Alpha really clicked for me. It's hands down my favorite book by this author and I can't wait to read more in this series. I'm assuming Elian and Cecil will get their own books, which I'm definitely excited for. If you love the author's other works, don't skip this one.

I usually liked Oakley's work but this wasn't my favorite. I thought a reverse power dynamic omegaverse would be interesting to read but this one fell flat. Seb and Rourke weren't characters I particularly liked and therefore were hard to connect and root for. The insta-love was expected for a omegaverse/mates story but the way it just sped run the building of any real trust or connection disappointed me. I liked when fated mates STILL would have loved each other if they weren't mates and I don't feel like that would be the case here. The plot was interesting so I kept reading and the 'twist' was fun.

Entretenido?

I get the idea behind this book: an omegaverse where omegas are top of the food chain, that I loved, but this came off as very dry, with no romance, and very one dimensional.

We have prince Sebastian who came off as snotty and superficial. I didn't like his way of thinking, he thought he was above all of them, spoke harshly to everyone, and didn't have one ounce of grace in his personality. There wasn't anything inside him except becoming King, have a child, and be above everyone. Sebastian had little patience for people, didn't like being told what to do, found his brothers amusing at best, and had a hard-on for his dog - yeah, that's all there is about Sebastian.

Then we have the alpha Rourke who sold himself to the Alpha market to make sure his omega brother would be taken care of. Rourke appreciated his friends, hated his status but understood it came with his brother's well-being, and didn't like the price of anyone in the market who would mistreat him and the other alphas.

Alphas are treated worse than a dog, dogs had a nice time compared to alphas. They didn't even have the basic basis, not even soap instead they had dog shampoo - I was so mad about this whole thing. I understand how in omegaverse is usually the omegas in the bottom, but damn, this was drastic. Alphas don't have a choice in ANYTHING at all, no education, they are sold as breeders, kept in small places, the whole attitude was nasty in my opinion.

Also, if you make a place where the omegas are the top at least make them nice. The omegas here were either mean, amused by deplorable situations, treated everyone bad, it was just overkilled in every aspect.

There is no romance, Sebastian thinks he's superior to Rourke, treats him worse than a dog, makes him sit on the floor and eat there, has a collar on him at all times, and only changes his tune because he kisses Rourke and realizes they are mate.

From then, it was a shit show. The King was crazy, like batshit crazy. Wanted to basically kill Sebastian, then the whole last part of the book was rushed, very weak, THERE WAS NOTHING TO ENJOY. Like, forget about romance, there is no character development, no feelings, just a children's book with missing pages which turns out to be like the whole premise behind the mates thing.

The only omega worth anything was Rourke's brother, also what the hell happened with Rourke's friend Shep?

Honestly, this book was unexpectedly amazing. I initially started it because I loved the concept that omegas rule the world and alphas are the lowest in the caste system. And then the book just kept getting better. For a book that’s only ~230 pages, it was perfectly paced. With small books like this, I always expect them to be insta-love, but this really wasn’t. There was indecision, turmoil/arguments, plot developments, etc that all delayed them truly falling in love fully. On top of that, you can’t help but fall for Sebastian’s brothers during the book too. How the author managed to make you enjoy the side characters AND the main characters in so few pages is beyond me. Nothing felt overly rushed either, and the relationship developed in a timely manner where you actually believed they’re in love.

Definitely going to continue with the next book of the series!

Some other things I loved:
- Rourke being this big alpha but also blushing constantly
- Rourke saying that he felt a certain way but it wasn’t just because it was Sebastian but that he would feel that way about any omega or beta. This specific logic made it so it wasn’t Instalove but instead just showcased a really good dude.
- As toxic as it is, I’m glad Sebastian treated Rourke the way he did in some scenes. It wasn’t good but also again, it created development vs just this instant change that doesn’t feel authentic.
- The way shifters were handled in this and how history can be forgotten was fantastically written

If I have any complaints, it would be that there were some small inconsistencies like someone having dark eyes on moment and then blue the next time. Also, there were some grammatical errors that could be caught. But these are minimal things in the grand scheme of this book!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Purchased Alpha by Hawke Oakley throws readers into the lush and hierarchical world of Lacehaven, where omegas hold the power, and alphas are merely pawns. Prince Sebastian is an intriguing character—rich, beautiful, and powerful, yet with a hollow ache that only an heir can fill. His search for an alpha could have been straightforward, but Sebastian craves a challenge, and Rourke, a defiant and proud alpha, gives him exactly that.
Rourke’s sacrifice is heartbreaking—selling himself to ensure his younger brother’s security—and his fierce determination to retain his pride makes him a compelling foil to Sebastian’s privileged arrogance. The chemistry between them sizzles, and their enemies-to-lovers dynamic is deliciously tense. Watching Sebastian’s control clash with Rourke’s unyielding spirit creates an addictive push-pull that keeps the story captivating.
The world-building is rich, with Lacehaven’s omega-dominated monarchy offering a fresh twist on traditional omegaverse dynamics. The pacing moves briskly, with enough tension and steam to keep readers hooked. Though the darker undertones give the story an edge, the eventual HEA feels well-earned and satisfying. The only drawback is that some of the secondary characters felt underdeveloped, leaving a few loose threads that could have added more depth.
Ultimately, The Purchased Alpha delivers a sensual, high-stakes ride with plenty of angst and passion. Fans of power dynamics and fated mates with a darker twist will find this story hard to put down.

This story is an interesting switch in the Alpha and Omega verse for me. I am so used to reading about the Alphas ruling over omegas that this was a nice change. This world is centered around the ruling family of Omegas and this is Sebastian’s tale.

I enjoyed this story and what I liked best was the growth of the characters. When we first meet Sebastian, he is a haughty and unlikable Prince but as the story unfolds, we get to see Sebastian grow and mature. Rourke is a good man and so much more than just the animal that this world makes him out to be. It was nice to see the relationship grow between these two. As Rourke and Sebastian are trying to figure their emotions out there is more trouble than they realize going on and soon they will find themselves fighting for more than just their lives. Not only did Rourke and Sebastian make an impression but many of the supporting characters made themselves known. This fast-paced story pulled me in right from the start and kept me engaged all the way to the end. I hope that this is just the start and we get to return to this world. I would love to see the other characters find happiness and answers as well.

I like how this book was such a different take on traditional omega-alpha style books. Instead of the alphas being the powerful, strong, rulers, omegas were in charge. It definitely provided a fresh and interesting dynamic that I haven’t seen before, which I really liked.

My only issue is that this felt like half a story. I NEED MORE! I felt like Rourke and Sebastian fell in love so quickly, and I would have loved to have understood more about them and their journey together. It felt like this progressed really quickly, especially with the king’s hatred. I would have really liked to have had more to the story, and more of a developed relationship outside of them being mates. It would have also been really cool if Rourke’s brother had a bigger part in it.

Despite my wish for more plot, this book was great. I loved the idea, the characters, and the new take on an old idea. There were minimal grammar errors, and this was definitely a story I enjoyed.

But as a side note, how did they know Sebastian was pregnant? They only slept together once?

There are elements that I really liked about this story. I liked that the Omegas are the top of the society and the Alphas were the bottom. I felt like this was a fresh take on the Alpha/Omega dynamic that hasn’t really been explored before. (That I know about at least).

Unfortunately, the main problem with the story was Sebastian. He was so unlikable throughout most of the book. I wasn’t sure I could get over it but eventually, he changed enough that I got behind his and Rourke’s HEA. I do feel like his behavior was explained by how he was raised but I think I would have liked it if he wasn’t so entitled and obnoxious throughout most of the book. On the other hand, I loved Rourke. I felt he made the story for me. Overall, I enjoyed the story enough that I would read more in the series. I would like to see what happens in this world after the events of this book.

Enjoyed it but lacking

I enjoyed reading most of the romance buildup and the fabled story regarding their origin. What I did not like was how the two ML both do a 180 in their basic personality. I felt they just became each others perfect match without much internal struggle or earning of trust. Really could have used more intimate scenes and Rourke should/could have been WAY more dirty in bed. I kept waiting for some true knotty dirty talk and nothing much came. The main Villain had very little background or explanation of how they come to be the bad guy. Especially for that level of betrayal, cause power/greed is a lazy IMO cough out of an excuse. The henchman had a better profile and was mentioned more often, so I actually had the chance to dislike that character. The ending was sweet and the love was there, but I was left wanting in several ways.

The idea was good but the execution needed work. It felt like an outline or rough draft. The plot is flimsy, the world building is barely there, and the characterization made no sense. The story was just extremely surface level and lots of things needed more details.

Our omega prince, Sebastian, hates alphas. Our alpha, Rourke, hates omegas. But then suddenly they find out they're fated mates and all those previous ethos flip. It made no sense, especially with how poorly Sebastian treated Rourke before finding out.

The king did all these things in the kingdom to bring alphas down and remove evidence of fated mate from the kingdom. But it’s never even explained why he did that or why he hated the idea so much. It’s just waved off and simply acted as a lame point of conflict. It made no sense to me.

Idk, there just needed to be more.

this was like a little book club rec so not something i would have normally picked up LOL

i'll start with my positives:
-i really liked elian, cecil, and rouke.
-i thought this book had some funny lines
-the concept of your mate tasting like your favorite fruit is pretty cool.

i feel like this concept would be kind of cool as a children's fairytale.

what i really would have wanted was some more plot building...i feel like this book lacks a lot of action and i feel like i was being told about a lot of things that were happening in the book versus actually being there and "experiencing" it.

since this was a romantasy i feel like a very important part of it is the romance and for me personally i didn't feel super emotionally involved with the couple.

i love a plot twist at the end and a good overthrowing the corrupt ruler so slay for that end. plus love me a fluffy epilogue

it sounds weird but had this book been a little bit longer and more detailed i would probably have rated it a bit higher.
lol sorry trey

Fascinating society - I want to learn more!

I’ve been looking for a A/B/O book that is set in a world where the omegas are in charge and the alphas are chattel. I got very excited when I saw the blurb for this book, and it was from an author that I know could do it justice.

This was interesting to see how this society functioned. I hope that we get more insight into the history of why society moved from revering the fated mating, to reviling and denigrating alphas. What if a royal omega got spurned by their chosen alpha due to a fated pairing and that started the steady denigration of everything?

This was definitely an interesting take on the alpha-omega concept and I enjoyed the change very much although I m so used to Alphas being in charge it was hard to imagine what I was reading. The writing and development of the story need some finesse, it is quite chunky, and it has some raw transition but overall I enjoyed it. Sebastian was an annoying, unsuffreble MC half the book, the writing didn t make you feel much for these 2 until they realize they are fated. Second part of the book was much better and the culmination of the story was very satisfying. Eli was a hoot, I still laugh imagining him parting the crowd "princes coming through, people. Make way"😀

The premise of this book was interesting, a reverse situation where omega have all the power and alpha are only there for breeding.
The main character Sebastian is an ass, I don’t care if he is an omega prince, he is unlikeable. He only wants an heir to have the throne but is picky about the alpha he will use to produce said child. He bought Rouke at an illegal alpha market and then treat him like a dog. He then freaks out when he realizes that they are fated mates (I do like the concept of the mate tasting like the favorite fruit of the person).
Rouke is supposed to hate omega, except his younger brother, but he forgives Sebastian way too fast for all the crap he is making him live.
I found the fate mate aspect was use as an excuse to push those two together when they did not have much chemistry.
There is also some plot about hidden mythology of the omega God and the King keeping secret but to be honest, I didn’t keep my attention much.
I do not think I will continue this series, maybe if it focus on one of Sebastian brothers.

Wow! When is # 2?

It seems that the each new book I read by Hawke Oakley, I find is more developed and detailed than the last. It makes me super hungry for a series that I am sure is coming. What about Elian and Shep? This had smexy some but it had so much description of fated mates according to the old book they found which probably also matches Cinderhollow information about Fated Mates or this is from their libraries.
I love how Hawke weaves bits of other tales into each one he is writing especially the latest ones.
Hawke has become one of my new favorite authors. I have binged everything now and I can't wait until there is more to this story!

Whoa whoa whoa

Ok I’ve read books about omegas being bought but this is a new way of viewing books in the alpha/omega verse. I like how the complex of the story is a different from what we’re use to reading so that’s nice.
I instantly fell in love with Rouke his compassionate self to always protect those closest to him. No matter how Sebastian treated him he always still loved him.
Sebastian took some getting used to but can you blame him? In a way he was raised this way believing alphas were inferior. I just love how this whole book comes together.

this seemed promising at first, but lost the plot along the way. I don't remember their names, but Alpha's anger and hostility towards Omega pretty much vanished after he got to the palace, which was super confusing. I get that they're mates or whatever, but he doesn't even question his own change of heart. Then the whole thing with Omega's father was just so unnecessarily convoluted. I was intrigued by the script-flip of your traditional alpha-omega societal hierarchies in omegaverse books, but this book had too many plot points

Quite a nice read! I was very worried at the beginning, because Sebastian seemed like a complete asshole, but luckily we found out that that's not true. The romance was okay, the world was intriguing, some characters awesome, some terrible (but we can't have only nice characters haha). There was sort of a weird revelation about the king which wasn't really explained properly (just blame it all on thirst for power? too easy.....).

Anyway, I would still like to read more if there were ever any sequels.
