The Super Happy Magic Forest is a place of happiness, frolicking, and picnics. Well, most of the time it is, but something is threatening to disrupt the peace. A mysterious portal has opened up above the forest and a small and very hungry gargoyle-like creature has flown out determined to eat everything in its path. It even tries to take a bite out of Trevor the mushroom! Thank goodness for our five brave heroes: Hoofius the faun, Trevor the mushroom, Twinkle the pixie, Herbert the gnome, and Blossom the unicorn, who set off to Wizard City for answers. Can they figure out which wizard is responsible in time to save the day, or will they be distracted by a busy sightseeing schedule and some delicious waffles?
In Super Happy Magic Forest and the Portals of Panic Matty Long once again invites readers of all ages to immerse themselves in the wacky and enchanting world of the Super Happy Magic Forest. I say all ages as Floss is six and I’m in my 40s and we both can’t get enough of The Super Happy Magic Forest books. Published by Oxford University Press, this sequel delivers another dose of zany humour, superbly quirky illustrations, and creative storytelling that made the first book so beloved.
The story picks up where the previous installment left off, following our group of unexpected heroes as they face a new challenge: portals causing chaos in their magical realm. Gargoyles threatening to destroy their forest. Long's imagination knows no bounds, and readers are treated to a plethora of new characters and settings as the group embarks on a quest to restore order to the forest.
Long's distinctive artistic style shines once again, with pages bursting with energy, and an abundance of visual fun that will tickle both young readers and adults alike. His attention to detail is impressive, creating a world that is not only magical but also rich in visual storytelling.
What sets Super Happy Magic Forest and the Portals of Panic apart is its ability to entertain on multiple levels. Younger readers will be captivated by the fantastical creatures and humour, while older readers will appreciate the subtle nods to pop culture and the clever wordplay woven into the narrative. I know for me I loved the Great British Bake Off shenanigans!
Perfect early chapter, hybrid graphic novel style book for around 6 years +. Can't wait to read the next one!
When strange monsters with ravenous appetites starting zipping through pop up portals in the Super Happy Magic Forest, the group of questing heroes knows they've got to get to the bottom of this. They are tasked with taking one of the littler monsters to Wizard City and see if they can get some magical help with the situation.
A very fun chapter book fantasy quest with the heroes from the Super Happy Magic Forest picture books. I loved all of the LOTR quotes and nods and that the wizards are obsessed with baking competitions. There's plenty of humor along the way, grayscale illustrations throughout (including some hidden picture elements) and a light mystery to solve. Loads of fun.
Notes on content: No language issues. No sexual content. The monsters primarily eat food, though Trevor gets a chomp taken out of his mushroom cap (it grows back). Nefarious intent doesn't get very far.
There are five heros that have to go on a quest to save the Super Happy Magic Forest from this new sweets-eating evil that has to come to them through this mysterious portal.
This book is loaded with wizards, magical creatures, sweets and waffles, humor, and references to Lord of the Rings and the Wizard of Oz.
I read this with my ten year old daughter. It might work a lot better if you've read the earlier books in the series, but we hadn't, so the number of characters was a little bewildering. The plot was fine, my daughter liked the illustrations, it was just sometimes difficult to remember who was who.
These books are fantastic! The heroes must go on a quest to the wizard city to find out why portals are opening and gargoyles are coming into the Super Happy Magic Forest. The characters in these books are so fun, both the heroes and the new characters. So much humor and adventure. I loved it, especially Chompy.
