Meet Alexa Owl. She's returned home to Pittsburgh after a divorce to start a new life and a new business, The Owl’s Nest Couturier Shoppe. Much to her surprise, she's getting more than she ever bargained for: Detective Bobby Starr, and he's no ordinary sleuth. Bobby is an angel who's returned to Earth in hopes of earning his way into the Guardian Angel Squad. He's been sent by none other than Saint Pete to acquire Alexa’s help to solve three cold case murders he left behind. Except, here’s the catch: he’s only been allotted four days to solve the first case! How in heaven’s name is she supposed to do that? Alexa is a professional seamstress—not a detective. Bobby insists the only way to solve the first case is to return to 1953, and Alexa’s not in love with that idea at all!
After writing many suspense novels, CS McDonald has written a children's book to entertain her grandchildren based on a real pony that lives on her farm among the Thoroughbreds, George.
I had such a good time reading this first book in a new series....or at least I hope it will be a series! It combines mystery, humor, paranormal, and time travel all in one book.
Alexa Owl, freshly divorced, is back in her hometown to start her couturier business. What she doesn't expect is to have a ghost and a ghost cat arrive on the scene and demand her help in solving a very old mystery. But the unique part is how she helps solve the crime, she is transported back to 1953 yet a copy of herself remains to take care of business. Thankfully, she has some new help that covers for her if she seems a bit off in the present.
As I read the book and tried to solve the mystery, the author does a tremendous job of throwing several red herrings into the mix and while you might think you know the answer, the truth will probably surprise you. I thought I had it all solved and tied up in a red bow and then had to undo that bow and find another suspect.
I think my favorite character is going to be Winnie. When she was a child, she lived in the building that Alexa now owns. She is quite the spitfire and I love that she enjoys baking and using alcohol in all of her recipes.
There is a bit of potential romance between Alexa and a classmate, Cliff. There is a rocky start and only future books will tell us if this progresses or not.
We give this book 5 paws up and if you are a cozy fan, definitely check it out.
“Look, Mr. Starr, if you need a new suit made for a special occasion, I’m your girl. If your wife should need a gown made for a dinner party, call me. If your little girl needs a dress for her first Holy Communion, make an appointment. But I don’t know anything about solving murders. I think Saint Pete has sent you the wrong address. Perhaps you should look up Angela Lansbury. I think she’s still alive. She’s very good at figuring these kinds of things out.”
The late Detective Bobby Starr wants to join the Guardian Angel Squad, but Saint Pete requires him to solve three of the five murders he failed to solve in his lifetime. Pete knows Bobby could use some help though, and he sends him to Alexa Owl. Alexa has just moved back to her hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to open The Owl’s Nest Couturier Shoppe in a recently renovated historical building. She just wants to ease into her new life, her new job, but no, now she has a ghost cat and a dead detective pestering her to help them solve a murder from 1953.
"Here's to hoping they were safe and sound in heaven a half hour before the devil knew any of them were dead."
Bobby has four days to solve his second wife’s murder (yes, he had five wives, three named Catherine though he didn’t behead any of them). Cora Lee was killed right behind Alexa’s building, though back then, it was an Irish pub. The only way to solve this cold case is to go back to the time it happened. With some help from Saint Pete, Alexa and Bobby are transported back to good old 1953.
I really enjoyed this mystery. The time travelling, ghost detective, and cats climbing all over the Lord's Chair make it original and fun. All the characters are great. I particularly like Winnie, whose family owned and ran the old pub during her childhood. She has an endless supply of toasts for every occasion. Alexa is also a great character. She can stand her own for sure, and doesn’t wait around for Bobby. When she catches a whiff of a good lead, she goes after it. I had to laugh at all the times she jumped at the opportunity to recreate a popular culture reference, like ordering a martini shaken, not stirred, to the bewilderment of everyone in the 1953 pub.
C.S. McDonald does a good job balancing the present day and the trips back to 1953. Alexa’s personal life is not thrown away to focus solely on the old murder case. She gets to continue her first few days of business, spark some romance, and build a friendship with Winnie.
"Here's to learnin' from the mistakes of others. After all, you can't possibly live long enough to make them all yourself."
I’m very excited to read the next book in this series!
C.S. McDonald’s first installment in her The Owl’s Nest Mysteries is a fun, intriguing, and delightful cozy mystery with fun characters—and a mystery to boot. Usually, I have found that cozies have protagonists who amateur detectives, who by their curious nature drawn into solving mysteries which seem to fall into their lap. C.S. McDonald flips this premise. Her amateur detective, couturier Alexa Owl, is selected by none other than Saint Peter (that’s right! THE Saint Peter who mans the Pearly Gates) to help the ghost of Detective Bobby Starr solve his wife’s murder. Alexa is not a detective. She’s not a mystery fan. As a matter of fact, she embarks on research to find out how do you go about solving a murder mystery. I found this concept quite refreshing. There is also a bit of time travel back in the 1950’s, which is the time of the murder. I wasn’t quite sure what I would think about this. I’m not a big time travel fan. But C.S. McDonald pulled it off very well. A dressmaker, Alexa took great pleasure in commenting on Saint Pete (she called him Saint Pete instead of Peter) fashion sense. When making the time switch, she would appear fully dressed in the style of the period instead of naked, like most time travel books, or so I am told. Also, C.S. McDonald did a good job of pointing out the differences and challenges of trying to solve a mystery set back in 1950. For example, the lack of cell phones. Angel Bobby Star darting about to keep from running into himself. There are twists and turns and snappy dialogue that keep the story moving along at a brisk pace. I really enjoy that Alexa is likeable and the perfect balance of assertive and quick thinking without coming across as aggressive and obnoxious. Winnie, an elderly Irish-lady who helps Alexa in her shop will be a fan favorite for sure. I truly loved this mystery and highly recommend that fans of cozy mysteries check it out. If you haven’t checked out C.S. McDonald yet, then do so. You won’t be sorry! A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone.
Back to the Burgh and Beyond was a fun little cozy mystery with unexpected twists.
The storyline immediately drew me in. Alexa Owl is a lovely character in the lead, and I was curious to see how someone with her lack of experience would help solve a cold case from decades ago. There were a few unexpected twists and turns, like Alexa traveling back in time to 1953 to solve the murders.
Moreover, I loved Alexa’s relationship with co-stars. All the supporting characters are so creative and fun. Bobby is charming and charismatic as the ghost who wants Alexa’s help to solve the murder of Cora Lee. Honestly, Bobby was one of my favorite characters because of his backstory and his deal with Saint Peter. I thoroughly enjoyed the scenes where we see 1953 Bobby and present Bobby present at the same moment. The author writes the story in such a humorous manner that keeps you glued to the pages. Winnie is also sweet as she talks about the history of the building and the family. Even Garbo added a level of mystery.
Similarly, the mystery itself was fun, albeit it was a typical mystery novel where I expected something like what happened in the climax would happen. Also, I felt a few areas could have been trimmed, like Alexa’s scenes with her sister. However, the story ends with a slight twist, which is exciting and makes you want to pick the next book and start reading.
Overall, I enjoyed reading this story and would undoubtedly pick out the following books to see how it continues.
I received a copy of this book, all opinions are my own. I could not put this wonderful novel down! It made me laugh, it made me curious and I fell in love with the characters (they were just irresistible and Bobby just made you shake your head).
In this novel, Alexa Owl (love her name) is returning to her home town after a pretty pleasant divorce. She has started up her business, The Owl’s Nest Couturier Shoppe, in a beautiful older part of town (with a mix of old and new clients). What she doesn’t expect? A bunch of visitors from the building’s past! A beautiful but haunting cat that has long since passed away but whose spirit remains, an older woman whose family used to run a business in the building and the ghost that this story centres around – Detective Bobby Starr. Bobby Starr was not the world’s greatest detective (but he had a great heart most of the time) and had left three cold case murders unsolved. He is tasked with solving one of them in this novel and needs Alexa’s help to do so.
This is where the novel becomes hard to put down – Alexa travels to the past to help Bobby solve the murders. As Alexa spends time in the past solving the crimes, a copy of her continues to be in the present as she travels between the past and present. Alexa does an amazing job solving the murders, as she puts the pieces together and even saves an innocent man from being charged.
I loved the unique plot, it was well written and I loved the way the story developed. It was exciting and kept you on the edge of your seat, and while they were solving murders, Alexa and Bobby’s characters added some comic relief to the story throughout. This was an excellent read from start to finish, and one that I have already re-read.
I was granted complimentary access to Back to the Burgh and Beyond via iRead Book Tours as part of my participation in a blog tour for this and several other C.S. McDonald audiobook titles. Thank you to all involved in affording me this opportunity! My thoughts are my own and my review is honest.
Recently divorced Alexa Owl has come home to Pittsburgh only to find that her brand new couturier shop is haunted by the ghost of a little white cat named Garbo as well as the ghost of Garbo's late owner's former husband, Bobby. Bobby is trying to become a guardian angel, but in order to do so he has to solve the murders he left unsolved in life as a P.I. and the unsuspecting Alexa is going to help him with the first one: His first wife, Garbo's owner, who was found murdered in the parking lot of what is now Alexa's shop.
This is a fun little mystery that kept me guessing. I'm sure if I had been determined to puzzle it out I might have solved the murder a little ahead of the time-travelling pair, but I was enjoying it so much I didn't want to. McDonald has created a brilliant cast of well-developed, immediately likable characters, and although I've never been to Pittsburgh and have no real idea what the area looks like, she paints this particular neighbourhood well and I felt like I was there. I love the lore behind St. Peter and his tasks in Heaven, both related to guardian angels and not. (Spending an unexpected amount of time shooing cats off God's throne is a hilarious detail!) I love the way time travel is handled. I love the fact that we get to meet some characters both in the present and as they were back in the 1950s. I'm extremely curious about the client who could see the ghost cat but not the ghost man and find myself wondering if she'll be involved in future instalments in this particular series.
The narrator's performance is excellent! I listened at 2x speed and found it comfortable (keeping in mind that I never listen slower than 1.5) but I imagine it is also well-paced for those who prefer regular speed. Maren Swenson Waxenberg was able to make each character's voice distinct without doing anything too distracting or unnatural. I loved the Irish accents used for appropriate characters, and appreciate the fact that the rest were fairly neutral American. I'm glad to hear that Maron is the narrator on all of the audiobooks we were offered during this blog tour, as I have another C.S. McDonald title to listen to now over the weekend, and I look forward to listening to this voice reading me another story! One of these days I'll listen to the rest, as well.
5 stars all around, and I highly recommend this book to all fans of cozy mysteries, comfortable quick reads, and stories with a light paranormal element.
Thank you Iread Book Tours for a complimentary copy. I voluntarily reviewed this book. All opinions expressed are my own.
Back To The Burgh And Beyond By: C. S. McDonald
REVIEW ☆☆☆☆
Newly divorced, starting over, and a ghost...I would call myself crazy, but Alexa Owl goes with it. Detective, or, angel, Bobby Starr has been sent by Saint Pete to specifically seek out Alexa. Why? Bobby needs her help to solve three cold cases...in 1953. Can you say time travel? Fortunately, a counterpart remains present as if Alexa is not gone.
This story is a cozy mystery with a dash of paranormal and scifi and is all the more unique for it. While parts were strange, I did enjoy the story. Alexa is quirky, clever and feisty. Bobby is a likeable and sympathetic character. They made for an entertaining team, complimentary to one another. The overall impression I have is of a fun, light hearted and uplifting story that is ideal for the holiday season. It's a fun way to treat yourself with a time out from the crazy! If you have wanted to try a cozy mystery, Back To The Burgh is a charming place to start. And, I have to mention the adorable vibrant cover. Love it! One more thing, I especially liked the epilogue! Try this book. You will be pleasantly surprised.
I am reviewing the audiobook and the Kindle edition.
Back to the Burgh and Beyond is the first work I have read from C. S. McDonald. I am impressed and will be reading more.
The humor has a fun, sarcastic bite to it and the mystery kept me listening well into the evening.
Winnie almost stole the show with her wit, charm, and treats. Alexa did a bang-up job of traveling between 1953 and the present without losing her way. Several characters made appearances, including Fiona Quinn, star of her own series.
I look forward to learning more about Cliff, Bobby, and Holden. I’m sure this cast has so much more to share with us.
Karen Swenson Waxenberg’s narration was spot-on. Her intonations made distinguishing between the characters easy to follow, and I immensely enjoyed the cadence. Ms. Waxenberg allowed the humor to show through in her words. It was an enjoyable listen.
I’ll be anxiously awaiting the next installment of the series.
I received a copy of the audiobook for an iRead Book Tour. I read the digital version through Kindle Unlimited. My review is honest & unbiased.
I love a good cozy mystery and this is a wonderful one. It had all the elements I love; mystery, laughter, excellent characters, and more. We meet Alexa Owl in this new series and she is returning to her hometown after her divorce. She is starting over and that means a new business in an older part of town. What she gets is not only a beautiful building but plenty of visitors from the building's past.
The story centers around one such visitor, Detective Bobby Starr. He needs helping solving one of his cold case murders and Alexa is the only one who can help him. The plot of this particular story is unique in that I don't recall having read a cozy mystery written this way. I loved it. i couldn't put it down from the first page to the last I was enthralled.
Both Alexa and Bobby are well written characters and they work pretty well together. If you love mystery with a dash of the paranormal then this is certainly a book I would recommend.
HALL WAYS REVIEW: When I read the book description and saw that the setting of BACK TO THE BURGH AND BEYOND was set in Pittsburgh, PA, my interest was piqued. I lived just outside of the Burgh for seven years through junior high and high school, and some of my fondest memories and best friends are from those years. Add to that the fun cover and that it's a cozy mystery with a paranormal twist, and the deal was sealed.
From the very first paragraph, author C.S. McDonald's knack for description becomes apparent, and I was chuckling as our main character, Alexa, is experiencing pothole fatigue (a not-so-fond memory of Pittsburgh roads but spot-on). It is in the details that readers will find themselves immersed in the story. Whether it's in contemporary times with Alexa's exquisitely decorated apartment, or in the snappy dressing of the characters (living and deceased) in the 1950s, McDonald puts readers right in the story.
"My stars, she's as clumsy as a drunken leprechaun."
Another place where McDonald's writing shines is in her characterization, particularly with feisty, quirky Winnie, who is by far my favorite character. McDonald constructs her dialogue so that readers hear Winnie's Irish lilt, and all are sure to get a giggle out of Winnie's turn of a phrase -- and her drinking habits. Since BACK TO THE BURGH AND BEYOND is the first book in a series, it's clear that the regular cast is being introduced and each member is carefully sketched-out but not fully fleshed-out. But the characters and relationships are interesting enough that readers will want to know more.
There's not a lot of scene-setting or build-up to the paranormal element being introduced, and when it happens, it's somewhat anticlimactic -- and the characters are all very accepting of it. But like the characters, readers will likely shrug their shoulders and go with it, which is exactly what I recommend. BACK TO THE BURGH AND BEYOND is a light, fun, and quick read that has a nice, neat conclusion to the story's mystery, followed by an attention-grabbing little epilogue that assures I'll be reading the next ghostly installment.
Thank you to the author and iRead Book Tours for providing me a print copy in exchange for my honest opinion -- the only kind I give. This full review and other special features on Hall Ways Blog, 11/16/20.
What an interesting beginning to a fascinating and FUN new mystery series. My first impression was elegance and decadence. Alexa Owl is starting over. Her new couturier, which caters to wealthier and famous customers, is in a building that used to be a comfy, Irish pub, with every day working class patrons. Could it possibly be that her amicable and generous ex-husband intentionally found a haunted building for Alexa? Strange things happen from the moment she enters the front door. She will also be living upstairs,
Not only does she meet a ghost, but he tasks her with helping him get a plumb assignment from St. Peter, of the Pearly Gates. The good news is she gets a wonderful wardrobe to complete the assignment. Less wonderful is that time travel is involved. In life, Bobby Starr was something of a detective. Not a great detective, but he did solve some crimes. However, at the time of his death, he did leave a number of unsolved cases, including the murder of one of his wives. St. Peter has given him a short timeline to go back and solve three cases. He also is sending help, in the form of Alexa, without her knowledge ahead of time. She is no sleuth but has watched them on tv. What could possibly go wrong?
With humor and delectable detail of the 1950s era they are transported back to, this story will appeal to and intrigue readers of all ages. Those of us who lived with payphones and party lines and without laptops, internet and instant information may feel nostalgic, or at least a sense of appreciation. Younger readers may experience awe or disbelief.
Will Bobby and Alexa be able to meet the deadline if they can even solve the case? Will they be able to avoid changing history and running into the alive-at-the-time Bobby? What sort of danger will Alexa be in and will anyone in her present realize she is gone? She is after all opening a new business and has a lot riding on first impressions.
I was listening to this in the car and did not want to get out at my destination. It is both fun and suspenseful! A ghost cat is an attractive addition. Winnie, who used to live at the bar, has spunk and I am feeling secrets of her own. I am sure St. Peter is not done with Alexa or Bobby. I eagerly look forward to what will happen next!
Back to the Burgh and Beyond The Owl's Nest Mysteries #1 By C.S. McDonald Read by Maren Swenson Waxenberg
Alexa Owl has returned to Pittsburgh (the Burgh) following her divorce, which ended amicably. She's back and starting a new business putting her fashion and sewing skills to use in The Owl’s Nest Couturier Shoppe.
Everything is simply perfect until she has a visitor from the past enter her shop. And this visitor isn't from her past but from the building that now houses her business. Detective Bobby Starr needs Alexa's help to help him solve a murder case from his past - a murder he didn't solve while he was alive. Bobby's future in the Guardian Angel Squad is riding on this and they only have days to solve this cold case.
How do you solve a case that is more than 60 years old? Go back to 1953 when the case isn't yet cold. 1953 has many disadvantages - the first being a total lack of technology. I mean how is a girl supposed to do research without the web?
Back to the Burgh and Beyond is a fun read, or in my case, listen. This isn't a long book as it is just under 6 hours and the narration by Maren Swenson Waxenberg works well with this book. The story is definitely concluded when the end comes but it in no way feels as if it is a standalone title as there are most definitely some threads that were not tied off. The cast of characters blends well and they have a few personality quirks that give them an added depth. On a whole, the characters are interesting and believable. For those who like diversity of lifestyles in their reading, you do have it in this book though it isn't a major focal point.
I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I offer my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.
*Of note there is a bit of drinking both in the past and the present, and smoking in the past, so if you object to this type of behavior in your reading you are forewarned.
This cozy mystery is in a series and comes with a twist. Although the book seems to fall in line with the typical cozy mystery, it has something totally unexpected….time travel! This cute story begins with a young lady named Alexa who is beginning a new life. After her amicable divorce, she is headed to Pittsburgh to open her own retail shop. She is a talented seamstress. She enters her as-yet-unseen store with upstairs apartment that has been designed by a professional and paid for by her ex. The beautiful building’s interior is immensely pleasing to her.
She’s suddenly surprised by a visit from an older neighbor who brings her a welcome cake and whiskey. The lady grew up in the building which was at that time a pub. After a nice visit the lady is hired to be her bookkeeper. There’s only one problem…the building is haunted. The mysterious cat that appears and disappears is really a ghost cat. But, why is it here?
Then, the next mysterious appearance is by Bobby, who is a ghost from 1953. Alexa is surprisingly shocked, but doesn’t leave the building. Bobby tells her that St. Peter has sent him down to solve the last three murder cases that he left unsolved. These were three women who died, one being his wife. Alexa agrees to help him solve the cases and then they go back in time.
This plot is very far-fetched, but the following tale is pretty interesting. Alexa and Bobby are now in the same building as it was in 1953. One problem is that the present-day Bobby is there, too. They must avoid him while trying to solve the crimes. There are many twists and turns, including the fact that Alexa comes and goes between times. But, in the end, what will become of her? And, will Bobby pass the test from St. Peter?
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are 100% my own.
Back in the Burgh and Beyond by CS McDonald is way more than I imagined it could be! To start the story with Alexa arriving at her newly decorated tailor shop and apartment with all the interior designing specially done, it’s a dreamy way to start a book for sure!!
Set on the Strip in Pittsburgh, Alexa is initially shocked to find an older Irish woman, Winnie, with whiskey and a cake welcoming her to the neighborhood. Winnie and Alexa are both shocked to find a beautiful white cat, Gorda, who isn’t making Alexa’s cat allergies react. And there’s a strange gentleman who appears in Alexas apartment suddenly telling Alexa she was chosen to help him solve a murder from 1953. Doing her best not to lose her mind, Alexa goes with the flow.
The poor girl gets pulled from present day to 1953 and back without any warnings. Saint Pete even dresses Alexa with style, even accessorizes for her! Alexa is a stunning character who knows how to ask just the right questions to achieve the answers she’s looking for.
I particularly love Alexa as the protagonist in this book. She seems to be a friendly and cheery gal. I adore than she’s a seamstress! I’ve been seeing since the 2nd grade and I was forced to sew all my high school ball gowns. But I never though my skill to be good enough to help others do alterations or even make an entire outfit for anyone like Alexa!
This story is written so nicely with great comparisons between the different times as well as the differences in practices, such as smoking inside the bar or keeping a crime scene squeaky clean of fingerprints and cigarette butts. The attention paid to people’s style of dress is a nice touch, considering Alexa is a seamstress.
A digital copy of Back in the Burgh and Beyond by CS McDonald was provided complimentary. I give this book 5 out of 5 tiaras because I felt intrigued by all that was happening with the ghost cat, being pulled back and forth to different time periods, and how Alexa was able to live on the current time and travel to 1953 at the same time!
I received an advance review audiobook for free and am leaving this review voluntarily. Thank you C.S. McDonald and iRead Book Tours. I'm excited to be a part of this tour.
Back to the Burgh and Beyond is the first in the Owl Nest Mystery series. I love a good cozy mystery combine it with an element of time travel and I am intrigued! In this first installment we meet Alexa Owl. She’s recently moved back to Philadelphia, PA to start a new life and business, The Owl’s Nest Couturier Shoppe. Much to her surprise, Detective Bobby Starr is not your average sleuth. Instead, he’s an angel who has returned to Earth in hopes of earning his way into the Guardian Angel Squad. Bobby needs to get Alexa’s help to solve three cold cases in four days. No problem, right? Bobby insists the only way to solve the first case is to travel back to 1953. Alexa isn’t so sure.
This book is an absolute delight. The mystery element is entertaining yet realistic. The story is comical and fast-paced. The transitions from the current to the past is seamless and adds a level of depth that I can’t say I’ve read in a cozy mystery before. Having said that, I do hope to read more of this type of genre mixed novel. The chemistry between Alexa and Bobby is fun and I enjoyed how they interact with one another. The descriptions were spot on, and I felt like I was experiencing the book along side Alexa and Bobby.
The narrator was great and really brough this story to life. The voices used were amusing and kept me wanting to listen more. I honestly found myself look for chores to do just so I could keep listening. It was that hard to walk away from.
I highly recommend this series and can’t wait to read more!
🦉🦉🦉🦉🦉 Very reminiscent of the Jaine Austen series by Laura Levine - This was a super fun, super quick read. I enjoyed everything from the setting(s) to the characters. I’m a sucker for a good, quick read – and cozy mysteries are right up my alley.
Alexa is relocating to her hometown; in between that and a friendly amicable divorce, she’s also relocating her business (The Owl’s Nest Couturier Shoppe) too. Upon hiring a professional, finding and setting up the *perfect* location, she meets some incredibly fun characters. A cat named Garbo, a new employee/friend named Winnie, and a Detective named Bobby Starr – who just so happens to be an Angel.
She soon finds out that she has been tasked with helping Bobby solve 3 cold case murders, in order for him to join the Guardian Angel Squad – in FOUR Days. Alexa isn’t a detective. And she isn’t from 1953, which is when these cold cases took place. Told over two distinct time periods, this story unfolds in a predictable way, with some pretty unpredictable pieces.
I hope there is more with Alexa soon, I feel like she has more to share.
Thanks to TheMysteryLadie and iReadBookTours for an Advanced Copy of this book in exchange for participation in this iReadBook Tour, and my honest review.
Before I get into my thoughts on this book, I do want to say that I do recommend it to anyone that enjoys an easy to read cozy mystery with interesting characters. Also, I received this audiobook for free or at a reduced price in order to listen to it and give my honest thoughts. I was not required to leave a review.
I enjoyed the audiobook. It was easy to listen to, had interesting characters, and the writing flows well. The narrator did a good job, keeping it engaging for the listener.
My only problem with the story, and after discussing it with my teen daughter she agreed, was the ease with which the main character accepted so many unbelievable things. Oh, there are ghosts. OK. Oh, there are other incredible things, like angels and Saint Pete, that many people wouldn't believe existed. Sure, I'll believe it all and not get scared, confused, awestruck, or any other extreme, or even mild, emotions that most people would feel.
I try not to get stuck on details like that, but it really bothered me throughout the book. That being said though, I did enjoy the book. I got into the story, wanting to know what would happen. I enjoyed the setting and really enjoyed the characters, especially the ghost cat. I looked forward to an ending that would satisfy most people and was not disappointed.
So, like I said earlier, I would definitely recommend it in either book form or audiobook form. It is a fun read with an interesting story and unique characters. Just don't get hung up on small details like I did!
Back to the Burgh and Beyond is a fun cozy mystery with a time travel element. The play on the Back to the Future title was a great way to title this story! I thought this was a good clean story that readers of all ages can enjoy.
Alexa Owl is the new owner of The Owl’s Nest Couturier Shoppe. She gain not only a new business, but also a resident angel with the ability to time travel! Bobby was a detective in life, but in death he’s trying to gain his Guardian Angel Squad wings. He needs to solve a murder in 4 days, and enlists Alexa’s help to do it.
The mystery was a fun story with a good resolution that cozy mystery readers will enjoy. I think the time travel is an interesting element that surprised me. I really like that in a book, but I don’t know that I’ve come across it before in a cozy!
I would have liked the story to slow-down just a bit, especially as we traveled back in time to solve the mystery. I like a fast-paced book, but I wanted to have a few more details as they traveled back in time to solve the mystery. I wanted just a bit more time to settle into the story and go along with Alexa as she solves the case!
I listened to the audio version of this book, narrated by Maren Swenson Waxenberg. I thought she did a good job with this story. She had fun character voices that brought the story to life!
I was provided a gifted audio copy of this book for free. I am leaving my review voluntarily.
Back to the Burgh and Beyond is a Fun, Cozy, Young Adult Mystery. Readers will find a fun, easy to follow, little mystery with an assortment of characters and the unique additions of some fantasy/supernatural elements as well. The mystery itself is a bit predictable--and the fantasy twists are presented rather suddenly--but readers will enjoy the character interactions and the clean storyline. While there isn't a deep, complex mystery for readers, some twists make this book a fun start to the series.
The Author Brings Together Another Group of Interesting Characters. I enjoy the author's character development and the quirky cast that she brings together. She gives readers a blend of modern characters and those from the past as she introduces the time travel adventures. She does a great job creating characters that readers want to follow into future books of the series.
Would I Recommend Back to the Burgh and Beyond? If you seek a fun, clean, cozy mystery that you can even share with tweens and teens--this is another great book from C.S. McDonald and a great beginning to new series. The story is fast-paced--and flows nicely as readers follow Alexa from time period to time period and work through the mystery. I enjoyed it and look forward to reading more of the Owl's Nest mysteries.
I received a copy of this book from the author or publisher. All opinions are my own.
Back to the Burgh and Beyond is a fun, quick read! Alexa has just divorced her husband and moved back to her hometown, Pittsburgh, ready to open her own business. The old building has been completely renovated to house her dress shop, with her private apartment on the 2nd floor. Before opening day, she runs into an old friend from school. Enjoying coffee with him at her apartment, her gushing over is handsomeness is interrupted in the form of male ghost, Detective Bobby Star. Seems Bobby is trying to make it past the pearly gates, but St. Peter has given him 3 tasks to complete before he'll give Bobby his wings, and each 3 involve Bobby solving a murder from his era. First up, Bobby needs Alexa's help in deducing who killed one of his ex-wives. Alexa isn't too keen on helping a ghost-she has a business to jump-start and a gorgeous hunk to get to know better-but she really has no choice when she's suddenly zapped into Bobby's era.
This is such a super fun read by C.S. McDonald. The characters are sweet, quirky and easy to fall in love with, and Alexa's time traveling is a hoot. (Best part is the wardrobe St. Peter gives her each time she returns to Bobby's era.) The whodunit kept me guessing as Ms. McDonald gives the reader an array of suspects. Grab a copy today and be prepared to be pleasantly entertained. I enjoyed the story so much, I have the next one in the series on my kindle and ready to read.
Quite honestly, I never understood how a mystery could be “cozy” until I tried one…which was this one!📚 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I usually avoid most mysteries or thrillers because I can’t take them and they give me anxiety. But this wasn’t like that at all! Just because it didn’t scare me though, didn’t mean there was no mystery! 🕵🏻♀️
I chose the audiobook format of this book, and I LOVED the narrator, who was perfect for this series (the book I reviewed is book 1 in the Owl Nest Mysteries series). Narrator & Produce Maren Swenson sadly passed and the author’s new release, A Felonious Finale was Maren’s last produced work (part of this series). She had such personality when reading that really brightened the story and gave it life!
In the first novel, Alexa Owl is tasked to travel back in time to 1953 to help Bobby Star solve 3 murders and therefore allow him to be a guardian angel.
I loved how the cat waited faithfully for her owner’s mystery to be solved before she could peacefully join her.🥺💕 I’m still curious about the cat!
The story unfolds so well and also so mysterious that I wasn’t able to guess the ending- the best part of a mystery book is when it makes sense but you can’t crack it until looking back!
Well done, and thanks so much to @ireadbooktours and @csmcdonaldcozymysteryauthor for the opportunity to read! I would consider continue reading the series, and overall I rate it:
"Back to the Burgh and Beyond" by C.S. McDonald features the fashionable and feisty Alexa Owl, returning to her hometown of Pittsburgh, PA to oversee The Owl's Nest, her new couturier shop.
Alexa is starting over, having just divorced her long-time flame Dennis Owl, when a ghost pops into her newly renovated apartment. This ghost, Detective Bobby Starr, informs Alexa that she has been selected by Saint Peter to help Bobby solve a cold case from his 1953 past -- the murder of his second wife. With this paranormal mission, Alexa straddles the 1950s and the present, meeting a cast of intriguing, lively characters along the way, all while doing her best to help Bobby crack his case.
The mystery was hauntingly entertaining -- Alexa uncovers a series of young women having their lives cut short in 1950s Pittsburgh. Author C.S. McDonald really tugs at the heartstrings in her portrayal of these young victims and those whom they left behind. As a reader, I completely understand why Alexa is so invested in helping bring their killer--a complete surprise--to justice.
I love a cozy mystery that gives you all the feels. "Back to the Burgh and Beyond" certainly does just that. Pepper in a witty sidekick and a swoon-worthy love interest for Alexa and this novel sets the scene for a great series to come!
When I've had a stressful day (way too many during COVID) or a very full day, I love to curl up with a fun, easy read. I also love murder mysteries. Combine the two and you have for a fun enjoyable evening that will definitely wash away all that ails you. Back to the Burgh and Beyond certainly accomplishes both. Plus it has a dash of humor and a female lead character which I always love.
However, this book also has a unique twist. It's actually has a hints of the Fantasy/SciFi genres. There is a ghost and a ghost cat. Alexa Owl meets them when she moves into her new shop after her divorce. She is challenged with helping the ghost solve the murder of one of his wives - but it's in the long ago past. How to accomplish this? Time travel. She has to move between the past and present.
When in the present, she is helping clients and establishing her new business. When in the past, she and the ghost have to avoid running into his real self in that time, all while pursuing leads and finding clues. Sounds complex? It is a bit, but fortunately McDonald manages to keep the flow seamless and the storyline is easy to follow.
I enjoyed reading Back to the Burgh and Beyond - very fun. As a reviewer, I also want to share I feel the book will probably find it's strongest readership with a younger audience, say in the teen to early adult market.
I chose to listen to this book after receiving a free audio copy from iRead Book Tours. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.
This is the first book in the Owl’s Nest Mysteries. I had read the second book, Maxed Out, a while back and enjoyed it, so I was glad to read the first book.
I like the main character, Alexa. She’s an independent and brave woman who has just gotten a divorce and now owns her own business. I found it interesting how she just takes everything in stride: ghost, ghost cat, time travel…no biggie!
Detective Bobby Starr is an interesting character, particularly since he’s dead. He wants to be part of an elite group of angels but in order to be in it, St. Peter wants him to prove he’s worthy by resolving some cases that he didn’t have a chance to finish when he was alive. The first case he needs to solve is the murder of an ex-wife.
It’s obvious that Bobby wasn’t the greatest detective, so Alexa agrees to help him. Something she didn’t count on was having to travel back in time to help solve the murder!
This is a short but fun (and funny) murder mystery that I enjoyed. I look forward to listening to Double Dog Dare, the third book in the series.
I. Loved. This. Book! Full of humor, this cozy mystery had me laughing and trying to solve the case. This is probably my favorite time-travel series because the character doesn't stay too long in either period, and she's really annoyed about traveling back to the 1950s. Most, if not all, time travel books I've read, the character goes to sleep and wakes up in a different time period. In this gem, Alexa gets sucked back in the most inconvenient moments, adding humor and leaving me hooked! She continues to function in the present time but in a more automated fashion or spaced-out mind. Or so her amusing Irish assistant informs her. It's full of delightful characters in both periods. Detective Bobby must solve his ex-wife's murder, and Alexa gets harassed by his future wife, who doesn't like seeing them together. At present, she has a new shop to tend to, an energetic sister, a new romance blooming, and the ghosts of Bobby and his ex-wife's ghost cat that keep appearing spontaneously, which is very inconvenient because only she can see them. She acquires strange looks when she talks or argues with them. I rate it a 5-star. It's lighthearted, a quick read, and the narrator does an outstanding job!
This is the first book in the Owl Nest mysteries book series where we get to meet Alexa, our MC throughout the book series. Alexa has just gotten divorced from Dennis, her ex-husband, and she is getting used to a new life overall. I love when Alexa gets to her new shop in Pittsburgh, where she is a dress maker/tailor, she meets an older Irish lady named Winnie. Winnie sounds like a nice Irish Grandma like mine was. I also love the scene where Alexa has a gun and is not afraid to use it, as a woman on her own it makes perfect sense that she have one and I liked that part. I love when Bobby comes into the book too. He is an interesting character and the interactions with Bobby and Winnie are fun. And then there is a fantastically pretty white cat who keeps appearing and Alexa is allergic to cats! And the cat keeps disappearing on top of things, is it real? And then there is Cliff. Cliff was a high school chum of Alexa's and is now a detective who solves murder cases and is a good looking man too;) What is a girl to do... I can not wait to read the next one in the series and see what happens with Alexa and Cliff!
Back to the Burgh and Beyond is a delightfully entertaining story about a woman recently divorced, returns to her home town to open a quality clothier store. There is only one thing wrong... She has an unexpected visiter who won’t go away until she agrees to help him. Will this ruin her chances for a possible romance with another?
With some added humor, the author has created a wonderful mystery series with a touch of paranormal and romance. It is very well written and constantly “keeps the reader on the edge of his/her seat”, with action and new events.
The characters are portrayed in such a manner, it is difficult to remember that they are not real. The background scenes are equally realistic. The Title and Cover image are very well chosen.
The narrator, Maren Swenson Waxenberg, does an outstanding job in the portrayal of the various characters and in the narration of the overall story. I read the Book some time ago. I actually enjoyed listening to the audiobook more! *This audiobook was gifted me with no pressure to post a positive review. This is my honest review .
I actually read this series out of order. I started with book two and three and now am finally reading book one. This just goes to show you that you can read these books in any order. I have really enjoyed Alexa and Bobby and was sad when I finished book three. So, this is actually a nice reprieve to revisit them again with book one and where it all started. Winnie is still making me laugh. I never know what is going to come out of her mouth.
Alexa sure found her knack for solving murder cases. She and Bobby worked well in how they assessed each case. Although, props do need to go to Winnie as well. She really was a great help Alexa on putting all the pieces together.
The other books I read but this is the first one where I listened to the audio version. The narrator, Maren Swenson Waxenberg did such a great job of voicing all the characters, even Bobby's voice. I enjoyed the audio version that I may even go back and listen to books two and three on audio as well. Sadly, Maren did pass away.
I was pulled in for this one when I found out it took place in Pittsburgh (my hometown!) and that it was a paranormal cozy mystery which I love. Angels, time travel, and ghost cats, oh my! The mystery was engaging, with quirky characters and an enjoyable plot. It was fun with the ties between characters in modern day, and their family back in the 50s.
I loved the added touch of having part of it take place in the 50s. My Mom grew up not too far from where the story takes place so I got a glimpse into what the city must have been like when she was a young child.
I knew almost all of the geographic references, having familial connections to a lot of them, even sadly, Allegheny Cemetery where my maternal grandparents and my brother are all buried side by side.
I have the audio of this one and the narrator did a wonderful job as well, making characters distinct and with individual voices and personalities.
I look forward to reading more stories in the series.
This is a new to me author and the first book in a series . I had a great time while reading this cosy mystery. It combines mystery, humour, paranormal, romance, time travel and ghosts all in one book.
Alexa Owl newly divorced arrives back in her hometown to start a new business what she doesn’t expect is a ghost and a ghost cat, demanding her assistance to help solve an old mystery.
My favorite character is Winnie who has lived in the building Alexa now owns and she now works for Alexa. Winnie has a great sense of humour and no nonsense attitude which I love .
From the second chapter this book grabbed me and I found myself trying to solve the mystery and several times I thought I had and then bam . I find out I’m wrong and I never had the right suspect.
If you love a good mystery book then I highly suggest you check this out you won’t be disappointed . Now I’m excited to read the next book.
