Laughing so damn hard that they're going to spend FOUR VOLUMES, POSSIBLY AN ENTIRE YEAR'S WORTH OF SERIALIZED CHAPTERS fighting byblos, a basically throwaway joke boss from final fantasy V, and it served no purpose and didn't advance the plot at all lmao.
Damn, one of these that I actually liked the ending point! Seems so rare lol.
Anyways, this was a fairly action filled volume, and although it was lacking in progression, the progression it did have was very interesting. I enjoy how Shogos power and even Alus' powers are great, but not an automatic win. I also enjoy that most of the time it's Shogos knowledge that allows him to win. It somehow feels more Final Fantasy to me that way. As someone who's played a lot of the games, there are patterns and abilities and stuff from previous games that can help you in new games, and this feels similar, it's cool.
I'm always down for a good almost falls into despair and then is saved right on the brink, and this volume has that in abundance. I'm looking forward to the next one.
Fighty fighty fighty time as Shogo and Alus face off against Byblos again.
I like the slow evolution of Shogo's character, as well as the way that his companions react to him. Rei especially has warmed to him quite a bit, and it shows. The addition of Alus has definitely kicked the power balance up a notch, but it's fun to see someone really let loose.
There are things I like about this series and things that became grating. I like how the protagonist, despite being isekai'd into the world, still struggles and while his special ability does often save the day it's not overpowered and requires the other characters' help. I love the black mage's design (big dude with a beard) and while the white mage follows the usual archetype she's adorable. And of course I enjoy the references, both big and little, to the games themselves scattered throughout.
But the pacing feels off (arcs last far longer than feels natural and there is so much talking, even during very tense periods like in the middle of a battle) and one of the main party is only just beginning to get a bit of face time in this volume.
