The Memory Keeper

From the USA Today bestselling author of The Summer House comes a story about family bonds, one small town, and a reunion that changes everything.

Hannah Townsend’s life is just as she’s always wanted it to be. She has the perfect job at a New York magazine, a small but elegant apartment in the upper west side, and an incredibly successful beau named Miles Monahan. This year, for her thirty-fifth birthday, she’s leaving the icy city sludge for sunshine! She’s got tickets for two to Barbados, and she’s all packed and meeting Miles at the airport for a week of cocktails, sandy beaches, and the music of steel drums.

But her life is turned upside down in the span of that one morning. Hannah is rocked by the news that her beloved grandmother is very sick, and Hannah needs to come home to her small Tennessee town right away to be with her family and help run her gran’s dilapidated flower shop. It also means she has to face Ethan Wright, the best friend she’d left behind so many years ago. If that isn’t enough to deal with, she discovers her boyfriend is seeing someone else.

With flights grounded and rental cars in great demand due to the winter snowstorm, she’s stranded at the airport. On her birthday, instead of waking up in a stylish beachfront hotel in Miles’s arms like she thought, she finds herself packed like sardines into a car, with two passengers, on a ride-share from LaGuardia Airport to her hometown of Franklin, Tennessee.

When everything seems to be going wrong, it’s the kindness of a handsome businessman from Hannah’s past named Liam McGuire that might just save her. But a new development that threatens Gran’s shop and secrets surrounding Liam could alter both their lives forever.

A heartwarming, sweet romance that will have you laughing, crying, and best of all, hugging those around you a little tighter. If you loved the Christmas movies based on Jenny’s books and are looking for more feel-good, small town romance, look no further!

I feel as if the word perfection is used too much when I describe one of Jenny Hale's books, but it is what it is people! For me, she is exactly what I need in an author. Descriptive words used for her books would be; fun, smart, and endearing. Simply put its quality writing with heart.

The Memory Keeper is a perfect way to kick off 2021 with romance.
The blurb really does explain it all. Pre-order today and thank me later :)

The Memory Keeper by Jenny Hale is a heartwarming, feel-good read about a woman with an unexpected change in her plans.

Hannah Townsend is on her way to a sunny vacation in Barbados with her boyfriend when she suddenly has to reroute her travel plans to head back home to Tennessee to see her ailing grandmother. Finding her way home from LaGuardia during a snowstorm proves difficult, but she is able to ride along with an old friend, Liam McGuire, in his rented car. Liam and Hannah have run into one another at LaGuardia at the same time, and it turns out that Liam is headed to the same small Tennessee town as Hannah. The road trip provides the shared space for Hannah and Liam to reconnect, which is really lovely.

The thing that I loved most about this story is the connection that Hannah has for her parents and especially her grandmother. She and her Gran were particularly close when she was much younger, and Hannah is a little ashamed that she hasn't made it back home for any real length of time over the past several years. She's determined to show up for her Gran now that she is needed. Even in Gran's old age, she is still a business owner, and her business has fallen into disrepair and financial difficulty. Hannah gets to work right away. I was especially close to my Grandma too, so the relationship between these two characters and Hannah's immense love for Gran made my heart swell.

Hannah's trip back home is really a lifechanging event for her. She may not realize it at the beginning of the story, but she is a woman at a crossroads in her life. She has a lot to think about and some big decisions to make, and I love that this story featured Hannah trying to evaluate so many parts of her life and make good decisions about how she will move forward. A romance blooms throughout this process, and it is nice to see Hannah there for Liam as he has some stuff to work through too.

It's just a really great story. I was initially drawn to it because of the cover, with the picture of the rocking chairs on a porch. So Southern! Rockers on a porch make me feel at home and cozy, and that's exactly how this story made me feel too. I could see every part of it playing out in my head like a movie, and I loved that. An all-around wonderful read.

Sidenote: I think this would be a fantastic audiobook read! At the time of this review, I haven't been able to get my hands on the audiobook yet as it still isn't quite released. I think it is supposed to be narrated by Melie Williams, who has a really nice narrative voice. I think it will be a really great listen once it is available.

☹️ Neeext!

Hannah Townsend is living her best life in the upper west side of New York City with an impressive job at a magazine and a handsome and successful beau, Miles Monahan. With her thirty-fifth birthday on the horizon, she’s planning to celebrate in Barbados sipping tropical drinks in the sunshine with her boyfriend.

When she receives a call about her grandmother falling ill, she trades in her island vacation for a ticket home to Tennessee. As it happens, the sudden change of plans provides a welcome distraction from her recent discovery that Miles is cheating on her. When a winter snowstorm grounds her plane in LaGuardia, she searches for an alternate way home. Her family is depending on her to arrive safely from New York in order to take care of The Memory Keeper, her grandmother’s run-down flower shop.

With no ground transportation available, she opts to rideshare with two other stranded passengers headed in the same direction. A mere happenstance meeting with high school friend Liam McGuire turns into more than a ride to Tennessee and gives Hannah a chance at a fresh start. When the building owner’s plans jeopardize the future of her beloved grandmother’s flower shop, she kicks into high gear to save what she treasures most.

The Memory Keeper is a sweet romance about a close-knit family who sticks together, even in the hardest of times. From the hilarious antics during the car ride to Hannah’s attempts to save the flower shop, Jenny Hale’s writing style makes you feel as if you are experiencing the story through the characters’ eyes. What is especially appealing is seeing how Hannah grows into the woman she has always dreamed of becoming. Delightful, addictive, and purely satisfying, The Memory Keeper is an unforgettable romance you’ll love to share with family and friends.

Another Jenny Hale winner! In The Memory Keeper, we follow Hannah as she worries about her grandmother's fading flower shop business and her grandmother's ailing health, all while rekindling friendships with a few people from her childhood, and befriending a stranger in an airport. Of course, there's a romantic interest and he's battling issues of his own that Hannah will help him through.

She is also at a career and life crossroads. Her current career is not satisfying to her anymore and she realizes she longs for home and starting her own family.

I also enjoyed the part of Gran's journal and was wishing for more of that. I love when books go back and forth in time so you can see how things all turn out!

This is a very good book, and you close it and think "Wow, I want to change MY life now!" Jenny's a great author and a super sweet lady!! I do enjoy her books very much!

I started this and then stopped because I underwent emergency surgery. So I took a break to listen to a bunch of old favorites – because narcotics & book reviews don’t mix y’all. I’m on the less potent stuff now and diving back into my TBL.

This turned out to be the perfect book at the perfect time for me. While some heavy subjects are covered, this didn’t feel angsty at all. This is so much more than a romance, it’s really a woman coming to terms with whether or not all the achievements and goals she originally set for herself are still what she wants. Discovering that the town she left behind didn’t forget about her even when she neglected them.

Hale does a wonderful job of introducing the listener to Hannah on one of the worst days of her life. You can’t help but want her to find happiness, security, and love – in all it’s forms. There’s a fantastic road trip, a consecutive storyline featuring her gran’s journal, a family reunion, old & new friends, and an intriguing single dad. Lots of small town feel goods to go around. Hannah is a bit of a fixer and in giving wisdom to others, she reminds herself of what’s really important.

Also, I adore books with kids in them. Liam and his son make a wonderful addition to the story and Hannah’s world. As a closed door romance there isn’t anything more than a few kisses, but Hale builds a wonderful relationship between Liam & Hannah.

I loved the ending and the epilogue. While this completely stands on it’s own and there wasn’t any overt indication it would be a series – I can see how Hale could bring us more lovely stories from this small town and flower shop.

Narration:
Melie Williams is a new narrator to me – but I’m so excited to have discovered her. She was a great choice for this book and I love her performance. She is terrific as Hannah but also captures the nuances of the other characters and keeps everyone consistent. I’m looking forward to hearing more of her work.

I received a free copy of this audiobook from the author/publisher and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

This is an absolutely gorgeous read, one I have thoroughly enjoyed escaping into - mind you, that wasn't a surprise to me as that it just what I expect when reading books by this talented author. The best advice I can give is read this book rather than my review, I very much doubt if you'd regret it!

Hannah Townsend left her small town upbringing behind when she moved to live and work in New York. She thinks she's got everything she wants in life and has made special plans to celebrate her thirty-fifth birthday with her boyfriend, plans that go awry dramatically just before she has a call to say her beloved Gran is seriously ill. Hannah changes her plans from a romantic idyll in Barbados to a dramatic dash to Franklin, Tennessee. Fate doesn't seem to be on her side as a storm grounds all flights but maybe it won't be so bad as someone she knew as a teen and a friendly young woman (and her dog) decide to car share to get there. Just what has fate in store for her? You'll have to read it for yourself to find out!

The characters are well developed and believable, the angst and turmoil easy to relate to, the drama feels like you're actually witnessing it all - utterly fantastic. It is a story concerned with making choices, changing dreams, working together, making memories and finding your way despite the obstacles life puts in your path. The adages Hannah remembers her Gran citing are as relevant now as they were in the past. This is one of the best stories I've read, it truly is both a heartwarming and emotional read - and I can't recommend it highly enough.

Thanks to Harpeth Road for my copy of this book which I have voluntarily read and honestly reviewed.

Heartwarming story that has brought a song to my heart.

This was such a lovely story that was able to take my mind of my vaccine side effects, and I was able to read this in one afternoon, enjoying every word.

I loved seeing how Hannah started to come into her own, and her new friendships with Georgia and Liam, who she meets at LaGuardia and ends up driving back to Franklin, Tennessee with. She sort of knew Liam from when she was a teenager, and I enjoyed seeing the connection between Liam and Hannah grow. And Georgia's reasons for travelling to Franklin, are more complex and I enjoyed seeing how her story developed too.

And The Memory Keeper is initially a wreck of a flower shop but its very dear to Hannah's gran and provides a focal point for the story, and I enjoyed seeing the transformation as they attempt to see if the shop can be saved.

I surprisingly also enjoyed Hannah's gran's journal which was written during WW2, given I don't tend to enjoy anything remotely historical, but kept wanting Hannah to read the journal faster to see how certain aspects would turn out.

I love a Jenny Hale small town romance, and find US based small town romances to be such cosy and comforting sorts of read, and this really did hit all the spots on a day where I wasn't feeling myself.

Thank you to Harpeth Road Press for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

I have previously loved books by Jenny Hale and this one might just be my new favourite. This book is rich in all things family and friends, overflowing with love and support and it's what we all need in our lives right now.

Hannah is a character I could empathise with instantly, she was career focused and driven until she returns home and she starts to remember her roots and what's really important.

I laughed and cried as I read, I befriended these amazing characters and immersed myself in the vivid descriptions that make you feel like your standing beside Hannah as you read.

I flew through this book in just a few days despite being desperate to savour it as I couldn't resist the lure of the next diary entry and seeing what Hannah would decide to do with her Grandmothers business.

A story to leave your heart full and your cheeks damp with tears, a true 5* read that will stay with me for a long time.

life changed happens when least expected....

For me this was more than a romance. This was about more than the loss of a relationship and finding a new one. Hannah found herself. Okay. Let's be real for a moment. She finds more than herself, but that was the important part first. Then she dive in and be about Liam. Liam was another unexpected in Hannah's life. How she deals with it will be another memory for her to keep.

Melie Williams was a new narrator for me. I enjoy the cadence and inflection points. The narration was not flat.

Engaging with good characters, and certainly delivers the happy ending and the feels, but I felt some of the obstacles were wrapped up a little easily and neatly at times. Life is messier. But it did hold my interest, and make me smile. It’s clearly a fantasy and as much a finding who you are mid-life story as a romance for sure. Really it’s about family and home and discovery of what matters. And as far as I’m concerned, we could use both more books like that and more people making that discovery. A good read. Recommended.

Wonderful Read

This is a must read for anyone out there who is unsure if they are living their best life! It certainly touched me deep in my soul. Hannah has it in her head that she is living the life she wants. A few chance meetings with new friends and old; along with some unforseen issues that come up have her questioning her life path. Delightful book!

Hannah goes to the airport to pick up her boyfriend as a surprise and brings tickets for a surprise vacation. She spots him on the escalator with another woman. So that ends poorly. Meanwhile she gets a call from her mother telling her that grandma is in the hospital. But now all flights are cancelled because the snow storm is getting worse. She meets Georgia and Liam (who is actually a childhood friend who is also heading back to Tennessee) they all share a car rental to get there. Upon arriving Hannah sees that grandma’s flower shop is in a shambles. Long story short, she decides that she is not going back to New York, but staying in Tennessee to clean up and run the flower shop. Predictable story but ok overall.

A sweet and inspiring story about changing course in life

Hannah thought she would spend a holiday in Barbados with her boyfriend Miles, but plans abruptly changed once she got to the airport.

It turned out that Miles had other plans that did not include her. To make matters worse, she got a phone call from her mother saying her grandmother was in the hospital.

Twice heartbroken in a matter of minutes, she found herself stranded at NY’s airport, having to figure out a way to travel to Franklin, Tenessee, to visit her ailing grandmother.

She managed to head there thanks to a childhood acquaintance, Liam, who managed to get a rental car. They were joined by Georgia, a girl they met at the airport.

Liam had a sadness about him that pulled Hannah’s heartstrings, and Georgia was all color and fun, despite the purpose of her trip. The long journey forged a bond between the three of them.

When Hannah arrived in Franklin, she found out that her grandmother’s flower shop, ‘The Memory Keeper’ was in debt and in alarming disrepair. She then had to make hard choices for her grandmother’s sake and also for her own future.

The Memory Keeper is about reevaluating life and not being afraid to change its course.

One of my favorite parts was reading Hannah’s Gram’s diary from during the First World War. So lovely!

The Memory Keeper is a sweet and inspiring story, perfect for relaxing and escaping a little.

I received a copy of this book for an honest review.

I enjoyed this newest release by Ms. Hale and how it touched on honest life issues but emphasized chasing your dreams. I loved the family representation and felt like I was right there with them between the pages. And the setting of Franklin, TN is on my bucket list to see, long before Ms. Hale brought it to life, but now it’s a must! The story starts with a genuine part of life for many, sadly, but sometimes, like life, it all works out to be a very HEA.

It’s every woman’s nightmare: to think you have found ‘The One’ only to find that he’s cheating on you.
That’s exactly where Hannah finds herself – and where this story starts. But this book isn’t so much about Hannah being cheated on, but about finding her true feelings and re-discovering her need and love for her family, something she had forgotten during the last few years while building her career in New York.

Jenny Hale has written her characters with empathy and feeling and she knows how to draw you in.
Georgia is a prime example. At first she seems brash and even hard-hearted but as her character develops you see another side to her – and I loved her Southern accent! The setting is beautifully described and comes to life on the page; Franklin, Tennessee. Hale has painted a picturesque and idyllic American neighbourhood that I have always longed to visit. Hannah’s Gran’s quaint little bungalow and flower shop add to the overall ambience and charm of the novel. And I adored getting to know Gran through her journal, hearing about her past.

The Memory Keeper is a sweet romance that could easily be a ‘Made for TV’ afternoon movie that I secretly love to watch while doing the ironing. Although, I was anticipating moments of sadness and grief this was definitely not the case. The story was humbling, heartwarming and like a cosy hug from a loved one. A real pleasure to read.
