Unexpected Mates #5

His Devoted Mate

Rate this book
True mates are found in the most unlikely of places.

Emory can’t be with Clyde.

Clyde is a predator and Emory is prey. At least that’s what Emory’s head is telling him. But his inner rabbit screams that Clyde is the one--Emory’s true mate. And it’s hard to fight against his instincts.

Clyde finally found his mate. It was love at first sight. Emory is strong-willed, smart, and a hard worker--everything and more that Clyde could ever dream of in a mate. But Emory is convinced that the fates got it wrong, and they aren’t really mates. How will Clyde convince Emory that they’re meant to be?

Hope, unconditional love, heat, and Support. Being there for one another always.

His Devoted Mate has an overworked rabbit shifter, a bad boy turned mushy, the sweetest dates ever, and all the cuddles. A story filled with uber-sweet love and fluffy tails. It’s book 5 in the Unexpected Mates series and will make more sense if you’ve read the other books in the series.

Such a fluffy sweet story! Emory and Clyde are sweethearts that I just love. This is so far my favorite of this series. I love that we have a prey and predator fated couple. This is just such an funny and sweet story that I couldn't put down. I can't wait for more in this world.

This was just too cute! I hadn't thought about prey shifers in this universe before, honestly hadn't even considered them. It was really interesting to see how Brea explored them as a social group and Emory as an individual in that group. Plus, Clyde is just too sweet!

I didn't care for this installment in the Unexpected Mates Series. I think it is pretty clear that I am going to see this series through till the end, but Clyde and Emory's story felt like it was filled with a lot of unnecessary drama. And it wasn't the good kind that carries the story, but the bad kind that drags it out but contributes nothing to the plot line.

So let me start, all of the previous books in the series hardly reference the characters descriptions. Usually it is one feature point that is mentioned, like Dillan's ever present cat ears and tail or Kenny's silver eyes. Yet for some reason in this story, all we hear about is how curvy Emory is in every other chapter, and I don't understand the fixation. It took me out of the story every since time it was mentioned...which was way too much, we get it.

I did enjoy Clyde and Emory's unconventional meet cute and the fact that this is predator/prey pairing. It was a refreshing difference from the previous books and really had Clyde and Emory standing on their own. I liked that Emory was determined to finish school and work and didn't allow his mating and urge to bond take control of his basic functions. But once Emory takes Clyde home and the major drama line of the story begins, I was so over it. Honestly, it got to the point where I was skimming chapters because everything felt so dragged out and boring.

After that all wraps up, I was kind of done with both Clyde and Emory. I was over their romance at that point and I am still salty about how Clyde was treated when visiting. How things played out just left a sour taste in my mouth and didn't do either of these characters justice.

How could anyone look at Clyde and be scared of him? Those people were so cruel. Emory and his family were really strong, and I really liked them.

Once again, our pride shows how accepting and supportive they are.

As with the rest of this series it's incredibly sweet. I like her bringing in a prey animal to their pack. Especially a bunny. This made for a fun dynamic.

His Devoted Mate

This story was about Clyde a jaguar shifter and his mate Emory a rabbit shifter. I loved the story of this story of a predator and prey bring dated mates to each other. I prejudice of two opposites coming together and proving they can be together was so sweet.

Who knew Clyde would be such a snuggle-bug!

Clyde has always struck me as a sweet, silly guy, but man was he even sweeter and snugglier than I imagined. Having left us with just a snippet of what Clyde and Emory would be like together at the end of His Runaway Mate, we finally got to see these two together in all their glory and it was just as adorable as I expected.

I really liked that despite the fact that Emory had a few lingering doubts about a predator/prey relationship he didn’t let them get in the way of actually being with Clyde. Clyde is just too much of a sweetheart to have had a mate reject him over something so silly (I mean, all of them are, but it would be like rejecting a fluffy duckling). Emory really was willing to take that leap of faith and it was lovely to see just how much confidence he gained because of that (the scene when they shift together was just too much - I could hardly handle how adorable it was).

I think the only thing I didn’t like in the book was that some people who were awful (I won’t say more than they were despicable, evil, nasty people) didn’t face the comeuppance they deserved. I get they were scared but that is just not an excuse. I wanted some good old-fashioned blood shed. I wanted them (at least most of them) to die or suffer in some massive way. I get why Clyde and the Bliss Pride didn’t do anything but man did it make me angry. But in some ways it made a tragic point, when prejudiced, bigoted people call you names and claim you are immoral or savage or less than you can’t give them what they deserve as they only point to that as evidence of your nature. You’re forced to take the higher road (no matter how unfair or how much you want to say ‘you want someone violent and awful, I’ll give you someone violent and awful’). So, I guess despite my wanting unholy fury to be unleashed on those despicable creatures, what happened was in many ways more realistic and more poignant - good people are stuck having to take the higher road (even when it’s unfair to have to do so).

Anyway, I loved this and can’t wait for Cole to find his mate (poor, sweet Cole deserves the best mate who will give him all the snuggles!).

I think all books in this series will be 3 stars for me, more or less. I don't know why, but I read them in one sitting and I just couldn't stop... I wanted to know what would be of them and... I guess I was just in the mood for something sweet and lovely (I love stories where characters are bounded and united in such a tight group... And I'm a sucker for chosen families XD).

This fifth book was sweet. The sweetest so far, I'd say.

Clayde and Emory's first meeting was just too cute and funny. The way they met at the cafe and how cheesyly Clayde reacted was too funny not to laugh.

I enjoyed the prey with predator plot. It felt different (I know there are some books that run along this lines, but I haven't read any of them) and, once again, allowed us to discover another face of this shifter society.

The romance part was nice enough. The patter is similar to the previous ones in some things but differs in anothers, making it enjoyable and fresh. I liked how uncomplicated their story is: they meet, feel the pull and can't deny there's something between them. They can have doubts at first, but things just work between them and they decide to go with the flow.

The plot, as it follows the preys and predators line, is completely different from what we read before. I think I would have enjoyed it more (and this could apply with mostly all the books in the series, and it's the reason why they get just 3 stars each) if it were more... Through? I feel each book has a nice main plot line that always ends up resolving too easily. There's a lack in deepness and sometimes a little bit more strain marks the difference.

Let's not get into the pregnancies... Because I already talked about it in previous reviews and I knew it would keep happening lol

I can't wait for November (I think) to come so I can read the last book. Cole is a funny and heartwarming character and I know I will enjoy his story.

This is the book version of marshmallow fluff. It's cuddly like a cloud and so sweet your teeth hurt. Seriously, my face was cramping from how much I was smiling. If you like low angst, high heat, fluffy romance, you will love this.

Emory and Clyde were absolutely precious. Their romance was so honest and pure, while still being really sexy and even cheesy at times. Don't ask me how or why but it works and I was into it. I loved the little quirks that made them stand out from the rest of the pride. Like the fact that Emery is a vegetarian because he's a rabbit shifter. Or how Clyde is a dorky bad boy who spikes his hair and wears band tees. It's really cute and makes them multi-dimensional.

I also just really enjoyed getting to know Clyde more. This is the fifth book but I feel like this is the first time we've spent any real time with him. Seeing his dynamic within the pride house and his friendship with Cole was really nice.

This brings me to the big question: Can you read this book on its own and still enjoy it? Yeah...but you really shouldn't. There are character interactions that won't mean anything and a lot of background information that you won't have if you don't read the other books first. If you want to jump in. go ahead but the other books are fab so you might as well start from the beginning.

I loved this. It was cute and funny, yes but so much more. I really appreciated that Emory was larger-bodied and no one gave it a second thought. I liked learning about shifter laws and found the world-building cool. I loved how Clyde was supportive of Emory and his goals. I adored Emory's moms. And of course, I loved all the shifter kiddos ruling the pride house. This book was fun and effortless but it has these little things that make it special. Five stars because now I want more predator/ prey shifter romances. And carrot cake.

“I love the way your nose scrunches when you’re lost in thought. I love the way you look so confused when your concentration is broken. I love the way you smile first thing in the morning. I love the way cling to me in your sleep.” Clyde’s hot tongue traced Emory’s ear. “I love the way you call my name. I love the way you need me in the most unexpected ways. I love how you sing an entire concert in the shower when you think no one is listening. I love everything about you, Emory.”

In this book we follow Clyde, a jaguar shifter, and Emory, a rabbit shifter.

Clyde and Emory are fated mates. You know your fated mate as soon as you see them for the first time, or smell them. It's not something anyone is used to with Clyde being a predator and Emory being a prey, but fate obviously has different plans.

Clyde and Emory have no issues with Clyde's pride. They accept Emory completely and love seeing Clyde so happy. Emory's parents also have no issue with their relationship. But when Clyde and Emory travel to Emory's parents for a visit they quickly find out not everyone is as accepting. The rabbit shifter community refuse to accept that Emory and Clyde are mates and force them apart.

I have adored this series since book 1!! I just love the lightness. So much love and just utter sweetness. Each book does have little angsty moments here and there, but not too much angst. These are definitely a nice reprieve for someone like me who reads a lot of dark romance and angsty books. I enjoy just sitting back and gushing about all the feels!!! The relationships between these couples is the sweetest thing ever. I smile just about the entire time I read any of the books. I can not wait for the next one, even though I'm a little sad it will be the last one.

Okay this has to be the sweetest of all of the books in this series from the very first page. Clyde and Emory met in the previous book, with the poor bunny shifter Emory getting sucked into the Bliss Pride’s shenanigans with the onset of Logan’s labor in the middle of a coffee shop. It may cost Emory his job, but he gains an entire family of predatory shifters to protect his back! He may be a rabbit but it takes no time at all for him to become comfortable with Clyde and the whole crew. Clyde is determined to woo his newfound fated mate and spends as much time with him as possible, even though Emory still lives in the university dorms at first. These two make such an unlikely and swoon-worthy pair! And the way everyone welcomes Clyde into a family of rabbit shifters was cute. I have a feeling that these two large families will be fitting very closely together in the near future. Of course we still have everyone else from Bliss Pride present as well, including my favorite black cat Dillon. I still love this series and can’t wait to read about Cole finally finding his fated mate.

Love across barriers

Such a sweet book! Clyde met his mate in the last book, Emory, a rabbit shifter working at a local coffee chain. Clyde isn't at all bothered that his mate is "prey" and of course the entire pride is behind him a well. Clyde sets out to woo his sweet and intelligent mate who is just as taken with him. Emory knows about fated mates and while he is hesitant, his own feelings and the family acceptance of Bliss pride make it easy to accept the mating.

Once again, Bliss is more accepting than the rest of the world and it lands them in some trouble. While Bliss is fine with a predator/prey relationship, the rest of the world isn't. Especially the prey shifters who believe predators are wild, violent, and prone to murder. Emory and Clyde have to fight for their relationship even as they embrace their mating and all that it can be. It was a sweet story that took the fight in a far more cerebral way and promised change, but change that could be slow and painful. A sweet and swoony love sorry with plenty of sexy times and family to get through the hard patches. Lived it and can't wait for the next!

This book was a fluffy as Emory's sweet little bunny tail! I was super excited for Clyde and Emory's book since the end of the previous book.

Clyde is a reformed bad boy who has found his mate. Now all he wants to do is take Emory on romantic dates and prove to him that even though he is part predator, Clyde doesn't view Emory as prey...at least out of the bedroom.

Emory is focused going to school to become a lawyer and fighting for shifter rights. He didn't expect that meeting a pregnant shifter while at work and walking out on the job to help deliver the baby to lead to finding his mate.

I felt that this book had the least angst out of the rest of the series, but to me it didn't effect my opinion of the book at all. It speaks volumes Brea Alepoú's writing that the slight bit of conflict in the story was so good that I didn't miss the book long heartache as in the previous books (I'll never turn that away though either!).

I cannot wait to see how Cole's story will unfold.

Predator and prey... fated mates? Fate has a sense of humor.

I love this Unexpected Mates series! All my old friends welcomed me back into their lives. This book picks up where book four ended. Please read the previous books in order. You will be glad you did. This installment has it all: fated mates, the whole predator/ prey dynamic, bigoted misconceptions, and kids. Lots of kids. Ooh, and killer hairstyles. Bunny Emory knows jaguar Clyde is his fated mate. Being accepted by the rest of the Bliss Pride is a bit overwhelming. But the trouble starts when they visit Emory's family. Don't worry. An unplanned pregnancy will actually save the day. HEA is assured. You are gonna love this book!

Had my hopes too high

It was sweet, and I loved how they were together but this book definitely didn't have as much tlc put into it as the first 4. There was a lot of sentences that really didn't make since, extra words that shouldn't be there, and even an abrupt ending to a breakfast that should have been the end of a chapter but wasn't. So it def could have used some more editing at the least.

Also I understood that the rabbit shifters were supposed to be primitive in their thinking but the dialect was just choppy and not at all easy to read.

All in all, it felt like a rough draft instead of the finished book. I finished it because I've already invested in reading the first 4 and I was really looking forward to it. But if I'm honest if the first book was written at this level I prob wouldn't have finished it.

I really love this series. I like the found family theme and the strong bonds between the members of the Pride. It’s beautiful to read how they take care of each other and how welcoming they are.
I loved Emory and Clyde, they were super sweet and cute together! And I really liked Emory's family, his moms were the best. I also really liked the storyline. I thought that it was a very interesting way to talk about prejudice. I really liked how the author handled the plot.
Great addition to the series I really really can't wait for the next book!! Cole deserves his happy ending!

This book was as sweet as advertised. The “trigger warning” made me chuckle (and got highlighted). There were scenes I giggled. There were scenes I felt their pain. But overall, it was just meh 🤷🏻‍♀️

The book itself seemed rushed and had very poor editing. Several instances of bad auto correct that made me stop and re-read a paragraph because it just didn’t make sense. I, of all people, shouldn’t point fingers at bad auto correct but that is why you have an editor....even if you are an indy, you should have someone else read your work before you hit that publish button.

I’ll still read the last book because I did love the rest of the series but I was just disappointed in this one.

Size doesn't matter, it what's in the heart that makes you big. Emory, rabbit is in the Pride House after helping deliver twins. He felt a strong reaction to Clyde, Jaguar. Clyde used the "m" word first. The character of the Pride makes the story. Each of the couples represent the primer for family and friendship. Emory and Clyde make the ultimate dilemma of being prey and predator. Can they for a bonding trust? Can Emory feel comfortable in a group of predators? Will the predators be tempted? A few surprise twists and dips challenge the couple. Great romance and adventure. Well done! I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I really liked Emory and Clyde, they were super sweet, but I think I was expecting a bit more from their story. It was sweet but at the same time it felt a bit flat.

QUICK THOUGHTS
-- Shifters Jaguar/Bunny pairing -- predator/prey -- fated mates -- some really, really sweet moments -- made me chuckle -- tried for a bit of drama but it didn't work so well for me -- really likeable MCs... Emory & Clyde -- characters from previous books are in this one too -- blood family and chosen -- this instalment has an ending no "to be continued -- NOT a stand alone -- looking forward to reading the final instalment

Opposites attract

I really enjoyed getting an in-depth look at Clyde and his mischievous ways. He has the perfect match in Emory. The two have great chemistry and lots of fun with one another. They can balance each other and I love that about them. Fighting against preconceived prejudice and a rather large infusion of little ones, is just some of the challenges placed in front of these two. Of course the whole pride will come together and lend a hand as this family is known to do.

I loved being able to jump back into this series! The characters and their stories are all so comforting. Emory and Clyde made such a cute couple and I loved that we finally got a prey/predator fated couple. Reading about Emory shifting into his rabbit form with the entire Pride was probably my favorite scene in the book.

If you enjoy shifter books with fated mates, supportive families and characters who overcome adversity then definitely check this series out!

This is the fifth book in the series, and I always like coming back to this series and learning more about this pride. Emry is prey and Clyde is a predator but yet they are fated mates.

This is the first book that deals with this type of dynamic and it's amazing. You got some fluff, humor, low angst but love all the way around. When Emry brings Clyde home, it doesn't go the way that they had planned. I can't wait to read more about this series.

This was totally snuggle cute! Emory and Clyde are just adorable. They could just not resist each other and practically fell into each other's arms. Unfortunately, overcoming other people's expectations and biases is a lot harder. Not to give too much away but I was glad that the Pride will always support each other. This family just gets better and better.

I seriously love this series! It’s such a sweet series with amazing characters. I loved the opposites attract angle and the way the characters interacted with each other. The story was such a sweet joy to read. I loved the predator and prey of the two main shifter characters in the story. Emory the bunny shifter and Clyde the big cat. They had such cute details that made them even more real to me.

Such a sweet story between Emory, a rabbit shifter and Clyde, a jaguar shifter.

I truly adore any well written series that have the most unusual shifter pairings. Even through fiction, differences among each other can also be qualities of attraction. Fate has a way of showing you love in many different packages. Predator and prey as lifetime mates.

🌟 Loved This One!

Just when you think you know all about each of them...it's like, "wait, what?!" They're smaller things but still ;) These two were so sweet and loving. "Devoted" from the title is the perfect word in a LOT of ways in this story! Things seem almost too perfect and then *bam!* I, not to mention they, were totally blindside by...nope, no spoilers here ;) A must read!

Can a prey and predator be true mates? Read it and find out.

Clyde and Emory were beautiful together. Emory’s fears slowly disappeared as Clyde and the pride put his mind to rest.

I’m eagerly looking forward to reading Cole’s story.
