Sometimes doing the wrong thing is the only answer
Nikol Wulven has spent his entire life as the son of the most hated criminal around. Heir to an illegal empire he had no desire to run, his life wasn’t his own. But in his world, there were no choices.
Or was there?
The new slave delivered to Nikol’s harem was unexpected. He was fascinated by her Earth ways and bold manner. If others noted his desire for the defiant beauty it could put them both in jeopardy. And that must never happen because Nikol’s harsh façade is the only thing standing between his father and his brother’s life.
Sometimes the risk is worth it all.
Darcy McHenry wished she’d never left Earth. Kidnapped, sold to slavers and living in a harem, is a far cry from the life and family she dreamed of. Only her growing feelings for her owner keeps her from running. Her new master is a dangerous alien with horns. The whispers warn no one crosses him and lives.
Darcy’s about to test that theory.
Don’t miss the exciting conclusion to the end of the A World Beyond series!
At the end of a series, I stop to reflect about the journey that we, the fans, took following this series. I love AWB. I loved it since the first book and bought all of them. However, I was disappointed with Nikol's story. Maybe it was because the author mentions that when she started the series AWB, she never imagined giving Nikol his own book, but she wrote it because the fans were asking for it. You can see the missing link. The book lacks something that the others have. She still tried to make it justice, but it sucks because this was the last one! This one wasn't crafted as the rest of the series. Still, I want to thank you MH for letting me know these characters that I love, and let me scape to other worlds beyond this galaxy.
I struggled to finish this one. Because he is working undercover for essentially his whole life to this point, he has to lie all the time. Because she is a captive, none of the things that happen while she is in captivity can have true consent. Because he is lying, there can be no real trust. So every love scene just read as a rape scene until the lies and the captivity ended. The only enjoyable part of the book for me was the epilogue where the lies are over and Nikol gets to meet his brother’s family and finally get a happy ending.
I also did not believe the complete lack of communication between them that allowed that one guard’s betrayal to go undetected for so long. Just not remotely believable.
Wonderful Conclusion to the “A World Beyond” Series
I’ve read every book in Michelle Howard’s “A World Beyond” series and have loved each one. Nikol’s Surrender was no exception. Years ago, Nikol had taken his baby brother and left him in a field owned by the Alonson family. The main character in the very first book in the series was Torkel Alonson, his brother grown to adulthood. I loved that Michelle wrote the last book in the series about Nikol, bringing everything full circle.
Nikol’s father, Lothar, was a reprehensible man who lied, cheated and stole. He loved to torture and kill anyone who dared to cross him and often killed his female slaves. He forced Nikol to kill his own mother and Nikol was forced to act like Lothar in order to survive. Nikol learned to hide all his emotions behind an icy facade.
Slaves from Earth were forbidden on Marenia, but one of Lothar’s men purchased one at an auction and attempted to bring her to his rooms. Lothar caught him and after punishing the man, he had the human, Darcy, sent to his son Nikol’s rooms.
I loved the verbal sparring between Nikol and Darcy. It became apparent early on that Nikol was besotted with Darcy and did his best to protect her in this alien environment where she didn’t understand the rules. For her part, Darcy was attracted to Nikol but couldn’t accept that she was a slave and constantly rebelled.
The characters are all well drawn and the society in which Darcy finds herself is described in detail. The intrigue is suspenseful and the romance is touching and steamy. If you’re looking for an excellent alien & human romance, any book in this series is wonderful, including this one!
The hero has been a villain who appeared in the earlier books in the series. He is the son of the evil criminal Lothar. Lothar runs slave auctions and kidnaps Earth women to be slaves. He also sells drugs. His son does bad things to work toward of his goal of bringing down his father and getting his revenge for his father forcing him to kill his foster mother.
The heroine was kidnapped and sold at a slave auction. Lothar throws her into his son's harem. He wants his son to have a son so their family line will continue. He is cruel to her and tells her she has to learn the rules of the harem. (They all have to walk around topless, kneel when he enters the room, etc.)
The heroine wants to escape. So she starts going along with the rules so she can not be watched so closely and escape.
The hero and heroine fall in love. He has to do things he doesn't like to do to keep her safe.
There are many steamy scenes.
The epilogue was amazing. You see him finally meet his brother and get thank you's for hiding him and sending to another planet as a baby to have a better life.
I've read and reread this series many times. It is undoubtedly one of my favorites. Torkels Chosen drew me in. I love the Audible addition, especially with the sound effects added to your vision of the Jutaks Warriors daily life. There we some parts that puzzles me (what's with the conical shaped man parts). I'm so glad that Nicol was able to have his happiness in a way that reflected a better version of what being a Marenian should be I'm sorry to see the end. I was so hoping for just one more story, maybe one with the brothers Giele and Gregor, a missed opportunity for another mènage! 😜
Although I’m sad this series is ending this last book was amazing! This author continues to take her readers and immerse them into a different world from beginning to the final “the end.” Once you pick and start one of her books it’s very hard to put them down, so beware of book hangover if starting late at night. I loved that she chose Nikol and gave him a happy ending, the fact he was more than he seemed was always hinted at in the other books. Very well done Ms. Howard, very well done! PS. Do not, absolutely do not start with this book, start with Torkel’s Chosen, you’ll be glad you did.
I was conflicted with this one. I enjoyed the previous books in the series and wanted to finish the series. The problem is our hero, Nikol, is a very morally grey character. And 98% of the book our heroine, Darcy, is his slave. The power imbalance was 🤢 and I didn’t get the chemistry between the two. Yes, Nikol, was safer than every other male on Marenia but that doesn’t make him a good partner for her.
I liked discovering Torkel’s entire backstory and I’m glad that Nikol dismantled all the corruption during his reign but did we need a “love” story for him. Couldn’t this information been spread out throughout the other stories?

Loved it. Darcy is sold at an auction. The brute that bought her is tough with her. Lothar , discovered her and put her with Nikol. Nikol's life as Lothars son was horrible. Darcy and Nikol butt heads. A lot. Nikol could have stopped and talked to Darcy and the other women after a few incidents and he would have realized he had an issue! Anyway, Darcy is awesome. Loved her. Nikol. I'm so glad he got a happy ending. He deserved and needed it.
I think that this was an appropriate end to this wonderful series. I was very glad for the epilogue and the bonus epilogue. I don’t know about everyone else but I get a very happy feeling when we end and everything has been wrapped up for me with a bow. I am glad that Nikol got a HEA. If you you haven’t read this series, do it now, but start with Torkel.
I hoped that Nikola would have his own story and that his storyline would tie everything together between him and Torkel. Nikola lived in a brutal world but fought to hold on to a sliver of his heart. The sacrifice he made for Torkel (Harat) because of the love shown to him by two women was amazing. Torkel is his little bruher and he would never hurt him. I came to respect him more as the story progressed. A great story by!!!
Story true to Niko's character as seen throughout series. As formed by his cruel father and the deeply flawed society he lived in it was amazing he had the (well hidden due to fear of his father's possible retaliation) ability to feel at all. Glad to see the ending did go far to right the inequality of their females in their society.
I’m glad Nikol finally got his story. I hated the society. Terrible. Difficult to read at times. Easily saw the betrayal coming. Although, everyone was evil. Terrible society. The ending was perfect. Too many surprises to share, but worth the read to get to the final chapters. It was also good to see there was true love in Nikol’s life. I will miss this world, but not Marenian.
I'm so happy, but bummed out that this will be the last of A World Beyond. I've so enjoyed each and every book in this series and I'm so very glad that Nikol got a book of this own. I highly recommend this series to anyone who is a Romance fan. Each title has its own engrossing storyline and they each have a hot alien and a ballsy earth girl. Adventure and steamy romance. *sigh*
Not a particularly fun book to read but closed out the series nicely. Given the way the culture has been protrayed it would have been to much to ask to not have the sex and violence. However it would have been nice to have had some more positive instances to balance out the rest.
This book ended the A World Beyond series with a bang. It must be noted that Marenians treated women as sexual slaves, and there is a lot of violence in this book. It was pertinent to the story, but may be triggering. The story was well written and has the happy ending we all desire.
I read this series and am sorry to see it end. I honestly don't care for the harem troupe,b but I appreciate how the author tried to stay true to the world building.
Darcy decided to find a mate on Enoki and got kidnapped and sold to a cruel Menarian. However Brax broke the rule of no humans and his boss have Darcy to his son Nikol.
As much as I thought I disliked Nikol, this story brought to life a warrior with heart! It's so incredibly powerful and amazing, with outstanding characters!
I enjoyed reading and could not put down. Learning their differences is amazing, yet their goals tended to be similar. Nikol! Darcy! Their story is full of thrills, action and unexpected feelings
