Die Smiling by Linda Ladd is a 2008 Pinnacle publication.
This is the first book I have read by this author and I see her work is really well received. I try not to start a book or series with any kind of expectations but I do admit I was expecting this one to perform at a higher level.
So, while I do feel this was a solid thriller, it didn't quite live up to the hype for me.
Claire Morgan gets sucked into a twisted case by her partner, Bud, after discovering the body of Bud's girlfriend's sister.
The story alternates between the past and the present by describing the abuse of three children at the hands of neglectful and cruel parents which will have devastating consequences for them all their lives.
Almost right away I was pretty sure I knew which direction the author was leading me to and I put some pieces to the puzzle together immediately. Although it was impossible to know how everything would turn out in the end, I still felt a certain transparency to the story.
Since I have not read the previous books in the series, I was not sure if this vernacular used by Claire was her usual style of speech, but I guessed she is this way in all the books, and while at times she made me chuckle, she mostly ends up sounding silly and not at all like a seasoned professional.
I also missed out on how she wound up with Black and didn't exactly feel the chemistry between them. I know nothing about Black's background, but I thought he was one of the more interesting characters in the book, which of course has me thinking of reading one of the older books so I can find out how they became a couple.
To me the explanations at the conclusion were too pat and I wondered how gullible Claire really was. I'm thinking this situation could come up in future installments, because I was left with the feeling more went on than anyone was saying. I'm not sure I'm buying into the presumptions everyone made, and I was also astounded at how everyone just took things at face value and never questioned the answers.
Having said all that, this was a rather dark and twisty thriller, with some lurid themes and gruesome violence. The characters were very weird and troubled making for some interesting character analysis.
This type of book is generally right up my alley and although I didn't like it as much as many of you did, it still did the job adequately enough. I'm thinking this book may not be the best representation of the series, so I'm not opposed to reading more from this author. It could grow on me. Overall three stars

Linda Ladd certainly knows how to write a good suspenseful, witty/sarcastic, and captivating novel.
I'm not going to give any of the story line away.
Detective Claire Morgan finds herself fighting her emotions on 2 levels - her love life and the case she is working on.
Again Linda Ladd has 2 storylines working towards joining up near the end. Knowing who the bad guy(s) is/are keeps you guessing throughout. The red herrings are there for sure, but some real surprises come into view - I don't want to give anything away because that just ruins the Wow factor and also the I never saw that coming.
Highly recommend this series - 2 thumbs up and 5 stars, seriously.

Another evil serial killer for Claire and Bud to capture and another story high on the creep factor scale. I really like the way Ladd's stories unfold and how she brings the storylines together. Claire can be a little too careless about her own safety at times and I hope that she won't end up being a super-detective that never makes any bad decisions.

Sorridi e muori di Linda Ladd, romantic suspense e terzo volume della serie “Claire Morgan” pubblicato da Triskell edizioni nella collana Redrum, lo scorso 6 settembre.
Sono una persona poco incline ai complimenti e alla piaggeria, ma è doveroso da parte mia ringraziare la casa editrice perché su questa serie, che io adoro oltre lo scibile immaginabile, sta facendo un lavoro veramente certosino. È passato poco più di un anno dall’uscita di “Testa a testa”, primo volume di questa meravigliosa serie romantic suspense, e adesso a settembre 2019 siamo già al terzo libro pubblicato di una serie che al momento conta dieci titoli. Serie che ha avuto il suo brillante esordio in America nell’ormai lontano 2006. Ho già detto precedentemente quanto lo stile di Linda Ladd mi ricordi quello di un’altra regina indiscussa di questo genere, Mary Higgins Clark. Torno a ribadirlo ancora una volta, perché in “Sorridi e muori” aggiungiamo un ulteriore tassello al puzzle e il mio amore per questa autrice è sempre più solido. Ritorniamo nel lago degli Ozarks in Missouri, riallacciamo i rapporti con la detective della omicidi Claire Morgan, che nell’ultimo anno ha già rischiato la vita due volte e, dopo aver affrontato serial killer che mozzavano la testa e altri che lasciavano sui cadaveri orribili ragni pelosi, questa volta è alle prese con qualcosa di decisamente più frivolo e leggero: i concorsi di bellezza. Giovani ragazze alle prese con sfilate, prove di abilità e sfiancanti set fotografici. Il non plus ultra della superficialità, tra invidie delle partecipanti e gelosie. Un mondo effimero che Linda Ladd sembra condannare tra le righe, e come darle torto?
Ragazze che calcano passerelle fin dall’infanzia per compiacere l’ego e le ambizioni dei genitori, che pensano di non saper far altro nella vita e si ostinano a partecipare anno dopo anno a questi sfiancanti concorsi di bellezza, alla ricerca di quell’effimero che possa dare un senso alla loro vita. Non so voi, ma ho trovato l’argomento di questo libro più raccapricciante delle teste mozzate e dei ragni. Ma torniamo a noi, perché abbiamo tantissima carne al fuoco ed io non ho ancora fangirlato a sufficienza sul ritorno del mio psichiatra preferito, Nicholas Black. Dove può svolgersi la finale del concorso di bellezza se non al Cedar Bend Lodge, il meraviglioso resort gestito dall’affascinante dottor Black?
Per l’occasione anche l’ex moglie di Nick torna in Missouri per partecipare in qualità di giurata, e Claire? Claire non ha tempo di mostrarsi gelosa perché viene subito coinvolta in un caso di omicidio veramente efferato. In uno dei bungalow messi a disposizione delle partecipanti al concorso, viene rinvenuto il cadavere di Hilde Swensen, lasciata in posa dentro al box doccia con una raccapricciante frase tratta dall’Amleto e un sorriso grottesco sulle labbra che l’assassino le ha rimosso.
“Le labbra di Hilde Swensen non c’erano più: erano state completamente asportate. Fissai i suoi denti dritti e bianchissimi, da stella del cinema, per sempre congelati nel sorriso da scheletro più orribile che io avessi mai visto… Qualcuno aveva lasciato un messaggio per noi, scritto a grandi lettere maiuscole con un pennarello nero: SORRIDERE, SORRIDERE ED ESSERE UNA CANAGLIA.”
Hilde era la sorella di Brianna, la fidanzata di Bud, il poliziotto partner di Claire. La ragazza non prende affatto bene la notizia della morte di Hilde, apparentemente erano molto legate, ma anche loro avevano qualche scheletro nell’armadio. E non è un’immagine edificante quella che emerge dalla descrizione della vittima. Superficiale, disinibita con gli uomini, Hilde amava divertirsi, non disdegnava la compagnia maschile e uno dei suoi ex fidanzati potrebbe essere il passionale assassino. Perché Claire non ha dubbi, la morte violenta di Hilde è stata causata da qualcuno che la conosceva nel profondo e ha voluto farla soffrire con una violenza inaudita. Della trama non vi racconto altro per non rovinarvi la sorpresa, ma vorrei ancora una volta tornare alla vita privata di Claire e a come il suo rapporto con Nick stia prendendo una piega decisamente diversa, più intima. Il dottor Black vuole un futuro, desidera proteggerla perché Claire ha l’innata capacità di attirare su di sé ogni tipo di sventura. Se dipendesse da lui, la sua donna non correrebbe tanti pericoli, vorrebbe tenerla al sicuro nel suo resort, tra le mura del lodge e tra le sue braccia. Ma Claire è troppo legata alla sua indipendenza. Sì, lo ammetto, ho adorato vederli litigare, un po’ perché loro due poi inventano modi davvero teneri di fare pace e un po’ perché anche in “Sorridi e muori” ritroviamo Joe McKay. Vi ricordate l’affascinante sensitivo del romanzo precedente? Ecco, sono sicura che questo personaggio ha ancora tantissimo da raccontarci e mi auguro che l’autrice sfrutti il suo fascino… ehm, volevo dire potenziale nei prossimi libri. Adoro la geometria e i triangoli in particolar modo, sono la mia debolezza. Sullo stile della narrazione, niente di nuovo, ritroviamo come al solito le due linee temporali a capitoli alterni. Se nel presente seguiamo le indagini, nei capitoli al passato conosciamo una storia parallela, fatta di abusi e soprusi. Anche stavolta mi sono ritrovata ad empatizzare con i cattivi della storia, sono le vicende raccontate che in qualche modo ti spingono quasi a cercare di capire perché il male trovi sempre il modo di insinuarsi nella vita delle persone. Un’unica nota dolente, che però non inficia affatto il mio giudizio complessivo sul libro: il finale mi è sembrato un po’ troppo frettoloso. Sarà che quando ho un romanzo della Ladd tra le mani vorrei che non finisse mai, ma avrei dedicato un paio di capitoli in più alla conclusione.

Adoro Claire Morgan ed i casi in cui suo malgrado è coinvolta. Questa storia rispetto alle precedenti è molto diversa: meno cupo o claustrofobico, meno torbido o aghiacciante. Presto la recensione per il blog

Ciao a tutte! Oggi vi racconto di un thriller ad alto tasso di adrenalina.
“In una fredda mattina di dicembre, la sorella maggiore scoprì che la madre non le voleva bene.”
Questo è l’incipit del romanzo e, ora che ne ho terminato la lettura, mi accorgo che in sé racchiude il succo di tutta la storia.
Il libro, infatti, segue due narrazioni parallele: la prima racconta l’infanzia e l’adolescenza veramente travagliata di due sorelle, Sissy e “la sorella maggiore”, della quale non viene mai indicato il nome e capirete il perché alla fine, la seconda, invece, vede la detective Claire Morgan impegnata nell’indagine di un brutale omicidio di una bellissima donna.
Una delle partecipanti a un concorso di bellezza, difatti, viene trovata morta nella doccia di casa, con le labbra recise e un biglietto che recita:
SORRIDERE, SORRIDERE ED ESSERE UNA CANAGLIA
Sissy, la sorella minore della storia, è una bellissima bambina adorata dalla madre, che la fa partecipare a vari concorsi di bellezza, di cui è spesso la vincitrice. La sorella maggiore invece, viene detestata: secondo la donna non è abbastanza carina, anzi, la fa vergognare. Questo atteggiamento non aiuta sicuramente l’amore fraterno, ma fa sviluppare un odio smisurato tra le due bambine. Vi devo dire che, leggendo le angherie di Sissy nei confronti della sorella maggiore, ho parteggiato ampiamente per la rivalsa della seconda!
Claire, l’altra protagonista femminile della storia, è un personaggio curioso. È una tipa veramente tosta, veste in jeans e scarpe da ginnastica, porta i capelli corti e se li fa tagliare da un barbiere per soli uomini, che l’ha eletta cliente onoraria. E fin qui, vi chiederete, che c’è di strano? È una poliziotta, quindi ci sta che sia decisamente mascolina, sia fisicamente che caratterialmente…
“Era da un po’ che anch’io sorridevo in modo ebete: fin da quando avevo rimorchiato Nicholas Black, bellissimo psichiatra delle stelle, che passava molto del suo tempo a soddisfarmi. Infatti, quando andavamo a letto insieme, mi sembrava di sentire il coro dell’Halleluja accelerato.”
Devo ammettere che, come coppia, Claire e Nick mi sono sembrati abbastanza improbabili, sicuramente bellissimi insieme, ma assolutamente non verosimili. Comunque Nick, oltre a essere bellissimo, ricchissimo, prodigo di regali extra lusso, amante stellare, si illumina di puro piacere ogni volta che guarda Claire. Troppa grazia per una persona sola, direbbe mia nonna!
Da quanto ho capito, questo non è il primo libro che ha come protagonista la nostra detective; magari, avendo letto le storie precedenti, i due innamorati non mi sarebbero sembrati così strani. Andrò a cercarmi gli altri libri di Linda Ladd, così da capirci qualcosa di più! Magari prendo anche qualche spunto dato che, non so voi, ma a me quando sono in jeans corti e infradito di gomma nessun miliardario bellissimo mi ha mai filato… Ingiustizie della vita!
Ho cercato di interessarvi senza rivelare molto, dato che il bello dei thriller è indovinare chi è l’assassino. Devo dirvi, però, che all’inizio sono stata tratta in inganno: dopo i primi capitoli pensavo di aver già capito tutto, ma non è stato decisamente cosi. Tanto di cappello all’autrice, che ha catturato la mia attenzione fino alla fine.
Il libro mi è piaciuto, e, inoltre, ha diversi spunti divertenti: leggerete di una modella che tiene in ostaggio un parrucchiere, che le ha bruciato i capelli con la piastra prima di un concorso… Spassosissimo! Anche l’evolversi della storia fra le due sorelle, triste e talvolta agghiacciante, è molto ben raccontata e scritta in modo veramente piacevole.
Leggetelo, vi darà soddisfazione!

SORRIDERE, SORRIDERE ED ESSERE UNA CANAGLIA
Sissy, la sorella minore della storia, è una bellissima bambina adorata dalla madre, che la fa partecipare a vari concorsi di bellezza, di cui è spesso la vincitrice. La sorella maggiore invece, viene detestata: secondo la donna non è abbastanza carina, anzi, la fa vergognare. Questo atteggiamento non aiuta sicuramente l’amore fraterno, ma fa sviluppare un odio smisurato tra le due bambine. Vi devo dire che, leggendo le angherie di Sissy nei confronti della sorella maggiore, ho parteggiato ampiamente per la rivalsa della seconda!
Claire, l’altra protagonista femminile della storia, è un personaggio curioso. È una tipa veramente tosta, veste in jeans e scarpe da ginnastica, porta i capelli corti e se li fa tagliare da un barbiere per soli uomini, che l’ha eletta cliente onoraria. E fin qui, vi chiederete, che c’è di strano? È una poliziotta, quindi ci sta che sia decisamente mascolina, sia fisicamente che caratterialmente…
“Era da un po’ che anch’io sorridevo in modo ebete: fin da quando avevo rimorchiato Nicholas Black, bellissimo psichiatra delle stelle, che passava molto del suo tempo a soddisfarmi. Infatti, quando andavamo a letto insieme, mi sembrava di sentire il coro dell’Halleluja accelerato.”
Devo ammettere che, come coppia, Claire e Nick mi sono sembrati abbastanza improbabili, sicuramente bellissimi insieme, ma assolutamente non verosimili. Comunque Nick, oltre a essere bellissimo, ricchissimo, prodigo di regali extra lusso, amante stellare, si illumina di puro piacere ogni volta che guarda Claire. Troppa grazia per una persona sola, direbbe mia nonna!
Da quanto ho capito, questo non è il primo libro che ha come protagonista la nostra detective; magari, avendo letto le storie precedenti, i due innamorati non mi sarebbero sembrati così strani. Andrò a cercarmi gli altri libri di Linda Ladd, così da capirci qualcosa di più! Magari prendo anche qualche spunto dato che, non so voi, ma a me quando sono in jeans corti e infradito di gomma nessun miliardario bellissimo mi ha mai filato… Ingiustizie della vita!
Ho cercato di interessarvi senza rivelare molto, dato che il bello dei thriller è indovinare chi è l’assassino. Devo dirvi, però, che all’inizio sono stata tratta in inganno: dopo i primi capitoli pensavo di aver già capito tutto, ma non è stato decisamente cosi. Tanto di cappello all’autrice, che ha catturato la mia attenzione fino alla fine.
Il libro mi è piaciuto, e, inoltre, ha diversi spunti divertenti: leggerete di una modella che tiene in ostaggio un parrucchiere, che le ha bruciato i capelli con la piastra prima di un concorso… Spassosissimo! Anche l’evolversi della storia fra le due sorelle, triste e talvolta agghiacciante, è molto ben raccontata e scritta in modo veramente piacevole.
Leggetelo, vi darà soddisfazione!

4 Stars~~~~Another creepy and purely evil serial killer for Claire to pursue. Still loving this series and setting. This is a fast-paced read that keeps the reader turning pages. I do love the way Ladd goes back and gives the histories of the killer and those tied to him...and she does it without boring me. No small feat! And it gives a much clearer insight without a big information dump.
A few things that kept me from 5 stars:
Claire and Nick's relationship-
Avoidance, anyone?! The fight was serious enough, but suddenly we're all made up and nothing is resolved. Okay...love that they are still together, but sooner or later, they will have to deal. Would have liked to see the 'break' be longer and Claire actually have to come to a realization of how significant Nick is to her.
The last 10% of the book-
Really? I am not above reading about TSTL heroines once in awhile. Usually they are not highly decorated homicide detectives, though. Claire's smarter than that...usually...but she does have her moments. The end of this book was one of them. Also(and especially), Bud's actions were fairly unforgivable. Don't see how she could ever trust him again...regardless of his reasons. But, alas, Claire's fine with it at the end.
On to the next...

My friend had had quite a profound opinion on this (and a LOUD opinion, might I add) - and that was, IT WAS THE BEST BOOK EVER! So she lent it to me and I read it. And might I add, it was truly amazing. (I agree with my friend, although now I am a touch deaf :)...) I was (well, granted, still am) obsessed with the Sisterly Love chapters, which are found ever so often throughout the book. I love Claire Morgan, she's sassy, she's hip, she's the main character in the book. And Nicholas "Nicky" Black, Claire's lover, was so beautifully scripted and detailed. The murder of Hilde S. was quite disturbing... actually, VERY disturbing. But the race to find the killer is enthralling... and the Sisterly Love chapters keep you reading! This is worth your while if you're a Tess Gerritsen fan, and you like tricked out, creepy reads.

Die Smiling (Claire Morgan #3) by Linda Ladd is an enjoyable read, but it lacks the grizzly, macabre, tension filled drama of the first two books.
I felt the romantic story line for Claire and Black was slow, and had little progression overall. There is some tension ( Black wants a commitment from Claire) showing in the relationship through. Secrets come out for Shaggy and Nick, adding new dimension to their characters and roles in the continuing story line, and Bud shows an Alpha, macho, crazed side to his normally slick professional, laid back demeanor.
Cameo appearances by McKay, Charlie and Jude help to round out the story.
Overall a three star read for me, but moving on to books 4 as I’m hooked on the series

Ladd had me trying to sort out the puzzle to the very end and cringing on a regular basis. Especially in her 'have you on the edge of your seat' ending. In her last book, she had me checking my bed before climbing in. This time she had me covering my mouth just to make sure facial parts were still in place. For anyone who enjoys sick s*** mysteries, Linda Ladd's Claire Morgan mysteries are perfect for you.

In confronto ai primi due, ho trovato questo libro scontato e inconcludente, alcune sottotrame lasciate senza approfondimento e in generale senza particolare verve che invece aveva contraddistinto i precedenti. Sommato a una forma poco curata con molte congiunzioni, verbi e articoli mancanti sono rimasta davvero molto delusa.

Bianco: il colore che più di tutti rappresenta il silenzio e il freddo.
Rosso: oltre a rappresentare amore e passione, questo colore ha anche una valenza più violenta e negativa.
Questi sono i colori predominanti nella cover di Sorridi e Muori, due colori che catturano l’attenzione, due colori che da soli danno una perfetta idea di cosa troveremo all'interno.
Claire Morgan è una calamita per i casi più difficili, con assassini malvagi e calcolatori.
Sono passati quattro mesi da quando ha rischiato di nuovo la pelle. I due casi precedenti hanno messo a dura prova la psiche della detective, che porta ancora i segni fisici e mentali di ciò che ha vissuto. In questo periodo si è destreggiata con rilassatezza - si fa per dire - in casi più da vita cittadina, tra furti e denunce per violenza domestica.
Sono stati quattro mesi di pace che hanno portato un po’ di serenità nella Contea di Canton, ma questa calma ha vita breve, brevissima.
Una nuova minaccia è alle porte e questa volta niente sarà più come prima.
Una ragazza è stata uccisa brutalmente.
Hilde Swensen era una bellissima donna dal fascino elegante. Una reginetta dei concorsi di bellezza a cui è stata tolta la dignità, deturpata e derisa da uno psicopatico che si è divertito con il suo corpo e le ha tolto il sorriso per sempre.
Un omicidio che sa di provocazione e apre le porte ad una serie di eventi preoccupanti.
Questa volta la vittima non è una estranea ma una persona vicina a Claire e Bud. Hilde è infatti la sorella di Brianna, ragazza che appare in Luoghi Oscuri e diventa poi la fidanzata di Bud.
È proprio Brianna ha dare l’allarme. Sua sorella è arrivata nel Missouri per partecipare ad un concorso di bellezza ma da quando si è sistemata al Royal Bungalows, di proprietà di Nick Black, è scomparsa e Brianna teme per la sua salute.
Ma non finisce qui, ciò che succederà dopo ha dell’incredibile e scatena tutta una serie di domande e ricerche perché il killer questa volta è veramente feroce. E come è ovvio Claire Morgan sarà di nuovo nel mirino di un pazzo assassino assetato di sangue.
“Il desiderio di acciuffare questo tipo era talmente forte che quasi riuscivo a sentirne il sapore.”
Linda Ladd è un’autrice sadica con una mente da serial killer, non mi spiegherei altrimenti come possa creare trame così articolate e oscure.
In questo terzo capitolo ci addentriamo meglio nella quotidianità della detective, ciò che la tormenta è più in vista e anche il rapporto con Nick Black, lo psichiatra delle star, è sotto la lente d’ingrandimento. Il loro rapporto si è evoluto dall'estate precedente ma ancora ci sono degli angoli da esplorare e smussare, e non sempre saranno piacevoli.
Claire è autoritaria, autonoma, sa essere dinamica e nonostante la serietà che la contraddistingue è anche spiritosa. La sua ironia è pungente e vi consentirà attimi di leggerezza, che in un atmosfera cupa come questa non fa male.
Anche in questo caso abbiamo una doppia narrazione che si sviluppa in parallelo. Passato e presente si mescolano lasciando indizi qua e là sempre velatamente sul probabile colpevole, e anche se ad un certo punto sono abbastanza intuibili, non riuscirete a decifrare l’enigma al 100%. Una leggera foschia aleggia intorno al lago e decrittare anche le più semplici azioni, parole ed espressioni risulta veramente difficile.
Ritroviamo, inoltre, un personaggio che è riuscito a ritagliarsi uno spazio, dando ancora maggior mistero alla vicenda.
In conclusione, il senso di inquietudine è costante, ci si sente oppressi dagli eventi, le tante informazioni contrastanti portano confusione mentale e le rivelazioni lasceranno senza parole ma lo stile è così scorrevole che, anche se odierete leggerne il contenuto, vi ritroverete davanti all'ultima riga senza accorgervene.
Sorridi e Muori ha una trama orchestrata magistralmente , uno studio meticoloso della mente umana e un’attenzione alle emozioni che l’autrice vuole suscitare nel lettore.
A mio parere questo è il miglior volume tra i tre pubblicati fino ad ora.

"Die Smiling" was a dark, edgy, and intense mystery. The characters are multifaceted and credible. I would recommend starting the series with the first book, Head to Head as there are continuing storylines in future books.

Ho trovato una autrice di thriller che mi piace molto sia per come scrive, sia come parla dei personaggi, sia il modo ironico che usa.
Il mio apprezzamento per la detective Claire aumenta di libro in libro: una poliziotta forte, testarda, attira guai, problematica, innamorata di un uomo che la ricambia ma incapace di aprirsi a lui completamente. Questa è una donna cazzuta! Certo che gliene capitano di tutti i colori, ma riesce sempre a sbrogliare la situazione con il suo savoir faire e la sua capacità investigativa.
Come negli altri l'alternanza della narrazione tra killer e detective rende la lettura scorrevole e molto piacevole, intensa e capace di tenermi sulle spine, pur facendo capire senza problemi la verità dietro alle menzogne.
Mi ha fatto male leggere della violenza, così tanto dettagliata, subita da dei bambini. È stato davvero difficile leggere quella parte. Ma proprio per questo ho apprezzato ancora di più il libro. L’autrice è stata in grado di incanalarla e farci provare tanti sentimenti contrastanti.

I really liked the story. The main character Claire is great. Brave, funny, witty. Her inner dialogue alone made the book fun to read. There was a lot of jumping back & forth between time & things kept getting confusing for me while trying to figure out who the kids where as adults. Over all it was a good story

High intensity
The good: I love how fucked up the killer is and we see it in these side flashes. There was a lot of tension throughout the book.
The bad: This needs a better editor. Too many glaring mistakes. I also wasn't as thrilled how the killer was "caught". It just didn't satisfy me. I also don't like how the fight with Black was resolved. Too quick and easy for my taste.

Dei libri letti della serie il primo rimane il più bello, avvincente, questo terzo libro l'ho trovato ripetitivo, persino la protagonista ammette di vivere situazioni che sembrano ripetersi, stesso delitto efferato stesso luogo, stesso inseguimento...anche il passato del killer viene raccontato nello stesso modo, cambia l'efferatezza, mi ha annoiato devo ammetterlo

One of the many books in the genre crime/romantic suspense yet, I enjoy reading them, I must confess.
First time reading this author, I had fun reading the book. It didn't have very dark and macabre atmosphere but it was suspenseful.
4 stars.

Keeps you guessing
I like Linda Ladd. This not my favorite but a tantalizing story! I kind of guessed some of it midway. Still a good read.

Oh. My gosh. I don't know if I can adequately explain just how lame this book was. I bought it while traveling. Thought I could read a little while my husband drove. I've got to be honest...I read the book in one day, but not so much because it was so riveting, but more because reading it was easier than watching my husband's driving!
Let me tell you some of the most irritating things about this...
First, the lead character: one of those "tough as nails" female cops who is just a "natural beauty", although she's far too concerned with getting the job done to notice such trivial details about herself. Her romantic interest: a fabulously wealthy man who just happens to be a stellar psychiatrist with a sterling reputation (he was written pretty much like any male lead of any Harlequin Romance novel I’ve ever read). Her partner: an incredibly attractive man who dresses like a male model and has women swooning over him as a matter of course. The hairdresser: a stereo-typical gay guy, complete with tight black silk shirt, unbuttoned to his navel thereby showing his chest and the ginormous metal medallion he wears (gee, don't all gay men dress like that? Ugh!).
Besides the lame characters, the way this author set up the story - largely centered around the "ugly duckling who becomes the beautiful swan and is tortured for ever more because of her tragic childhood" scenario, made me roll my eyes so often, I almost lost my contacts somewhere along my frontal lobe. Lame, lame, totally lame book. Save yourself the headache and don't read it (unless, of course, reading it is the only alternative to watching a madman drive you cross country at about 90 miles per hour).

Good. Dark but good. It has flash-back chapters mingled with the current day chapters. I started reading only the flash back chapters because my husband was also reading this book at the time. Then his 'Life of Pi' book arrived in the mail and he abandoned this one. I did not want to get too caught up in the novel and be reading when he wanted to read--that was my thought on only reading the flash-back chapters when I started. When he started his new book I went back to the start and read the current-day chapters until I was about half way through. I thought I had missed a tiny little 'tell' that would let me know which sister was murdered and which sister was the girlfriend of Claire Morgan's partner Bud. Maybe it was there but I never found it. I did not know which sister was the murder victim and which was the girlfriend until the end. In a way you think this is too bizarre to be real but you also feel on some gut level this could happen. I liked the book and I plan to search for other Linda Ladd books to read. Now my husband is back to 'Die Smiling' and won't put it down.

Sorridi e muori; l'ambientazione è sempre quella del Lago degli Ozarks in Missouri, una zona splendida, gelida, dominata da boschi e dal silenzioso lago. Ed è qui che inizia anche questo nuovo romanzo, quando Claire Morgan e il suo collega Bud scoprono in uno chalet il corpo senza vita di Hilde Swensen: una reginetta di bellezza, nonché sorella della ragazza di Bud.
Ma quando i due poliziotti, andati a controllare come mai la ragazza non rispondeva alla sorella, scoprono il suo corpo, Hilde è tutto tranne che bella: qualcuno è entrato nello chalet in cui era ospite e, dopo averla uccisa, l’ha messa in posa come se fosse una bambola, strappandole le labbra.
Ed è in questo modo macabro, grottesco, che ha inizio Sorridi e muori, un libro che come gli altri procede su due piani temporali, il passato di personaggi misteriosi, di persone che il lettore man mano si chiede chi possano essere, come sono legate agli omicidi e soprattutto come gli eventi passati si intrecciano con il presente.
Sorridi e muori; l'ambientazione è sempre quella del Lago degli Ozarks in Missouri, una zona splendida, gelida, dominata da boschi e dal silenzioso lago. This book scored on many counts, but was annoying in other ways. It was compelling enough to addict me to the series of which I have three read, and two to go. One interesting technique is to interweave the plot through the eyes of the "homicide investigator" (Clair Morgan) and the always insane serial killers. By moving the lunatics' stories around in time, earlier portions of the story are added as needed.
The things that are less appealing to me are the unending smarmy references to her (Clair's) sexual exploits. I'm no prude, but enough already. Very High School-ish. Also, the plots are not for the squeamish. There are no punches pulled in this department. So this series is not a flawless experience, yet I a compelled to read them all. Go figure!
