Apocosmos #1

Berserker

Rate this book
Alex is a game developer though he'd much rather stream RPG classics or spend time with Louie. That's his adorable corgi.
He also hates people. Not in a homicidal way but rather in an extremely-antisocial one.
Unless you hurt Louie.

In such an instant, Alex is pulled in the Apocosmos, where our whole world is just a blip in a colorful tapestry of million others.
A multiverse ruled by a strict system.
Where Norse, Greek, and Celtic pantheons clash.
Where dwarves craft, dragons hoard, and vampires don't glitter.
A world that is as cruel as epic.

Alex wants none of that though. He just wants to earn an early retirement somewhere in Spain.
There's money to be made in the Apocosmos.
Alex will take advantage of the market just like he did in his MMORPG days, in what seems like an error-proof plan.
But it's a zero-sum game and some people would do anything to eliminate competition.

Could not finish this one

The title of the book is misleading. It should be Market Analyst because at 50 % of the way through the book that is all the protagonist has done. The story has an interesting even inventive concept, but the main character is completely focused on making money not adventure. The Litrpg elements are light at best and not embraced at all by the subject of the book. Lots of promise never realized.

Book one

Mistakes: This book is well written and editing is extremely good.

Plot: After getting into a fight an entire new world of levels and monsters opens up.

Characters: The MC is what kept me from really enjoying this book. We meet the future MC first and he is self described as an unlikable person. Then he began telling his story. He still isn't likable. He lets his rage control him and comes across as a whiny two year old. The best character is the dog.

6/10

This was a really fun, slice of life book.

The author does a really good job of meshing mythos and real life, which scratches that Urban Fantasy itch.

While the main character is quite relateable, his dog turned wizard really steals the show.

A really enjoyable book.

World of Warcraft meets RuneScape...but as a novel.
I'm not going to lie. I originally picked up this book because of the corgi on the cover and the promise of a corgi in the storyline. I was not disappointed and once I started reading, it was difficult to stop. As an avid gamer and fan of fantasy books, this book was the perfect mesh of the two...and it left just enough questions unanswered to get me excited for book 2. I'm curious to see how Alex ended up where he is as he's recounting the events of his life and how he became a reluctant part of the Apocosmos and why Louie isn't with him.

Could be good...

... but I’ll never know, because I got about five pages in and couldn’t stop wincing at the awkward and overdramatic phrasing and speech patterns.

I like the Lord of the Rings and the Phoenix Guard: I am all in on overblown dramatic speechifying. But it’s really, really hard. You cannot switch back and forth. And you have to get the pacing right.

Three stars for trying and an interesting-sounding premise. I’d try again if the book went through a good editing. But right now, pass.

Not as much action as I like for the majority of the book but still fun. The end more than made up for it.

I am also a sucker for witty, lovable, sidekicks. His pet corgi Louis definitely fits the bill.

Also sparked my curiosity in the YouTube stream critical role. Apparently it’s pretty hilarious and I can’t wait to check it out.

I struggle when the narrator can’t do female voices to well. That would be my only criticism. Other than that I enjoyed it.

Surprisingly good

It started out good, and just got better from there! I got to 80% done and started looking for release dates for the next book, as a reader that’s the highest praise I can give a book. Looking forward to the rest of this series!

Thrilling

Love the fact that its not all fighting but also how to run a business. As well as that the story is being told in the present and the past

Loved it!

I’m a sucker for a book with a pet partner that alone would make me love it. It is well written (I didn’t notice any typos!). The time shift in the story was annoying at points. Overall I really want the next book in story.

Leaving the world within the true world is not his choice

His anger and pain made the choice for him through his actions, if only he knew how deep he was stepping into an even more unfriendly, harsh world of magic, wealth and wonder. Or what it would cost him, as his inner self unleashes it’s desire for carnage - will he be strong enough to survive?
A man full of the pain of loss loves his dog and the memories attached to his lost love who he shared him with. Dogs truly give us unconditional love and Alex gives it back to his best friend Louie the corgi, who may surprise you.

A well told story in retrospect, a life tragically altered, endless possibilities and one mans rage drive our MC forward into this new reality that exists within and around his own. The apocosmos is everything and everywhere, while the cosmos is just one small slice to contain those that are not aware of magic and the greater universe.
Humanity, unaware of magic and magical beings living side by side, is an interesting irony to mans idea of his own greatness.
In this case, Alex does not think he is great, he struggles with a lot, but was able to survive his daily grind. Now a new world is opening up to him and while he doesn’t want anything to do with it, Louie may want to explore being a mage.

Mundane man meets magical world.

I truly had a great time reading Beserker. Though I felt that the beginning of the book had a few cliched descriptions, I soon found myself immersed in Alexander Rage's story. Alex works in IT during the day, works out at the gym after work, then tries to socially isolate himself at night, preferring his dog's company to that of others.

After a forced encounter with corporate bullies who carelessly injure his corgi, Alexander learns that just beyond his small portion of his small world exists a magical universe that has been hidden from those in his part of the Cosmos.

Dynamic characters: both the protagonist and the supporting characters begin to evolve even in book one of this series. I loved seeing the development of the corgi's perspective, personality, and understanding of the world around him as he grew as a character, a friend, and as... Well, you'll see.

Lovers of Final Fantasy, RPG games, or D&D should definitely check out Beserker. LitRPG fans, give it a whirl. You might just find a magical book just waiting to devour your mind.

Alert

First, my review: “This was a fun book. I am glad that I read it. You should try it too.”

Second, I am not a bot...at least I don’t think I am. Yes this is copy pasta (just learned that term, so fun!) simply because I feel like any book I read deserves acknowledgement but at the same time my feelings on reviews conflict with the normal review process.

I enjoyed this book, so my goal is to promote it and help the author. If you are a potential reader, just stop reading now and take the above as all you need to know. I am not going to share my reasoning, thoughts on the book, or any opinions that would influence your decision to read it. It is my opinion that Art needs to be experienced at an individual level. You are the only one that can determine what you like and don’t like. Don’t let others make that decision for you. You should definitely read the book and completely ignore all of the reviews. Or not if you don’t think this book is for you. That choice is all yours and the beauty of art appreciation. You are a much better judge of what you will like than anyone here.

If you are a member of the IAK Guild (thanks, Jason) or part of the review police, feel free to criticize me and challenge my philosophy on reviewing art. I think we all love a good debate. The forums are open and I welcome your comments. I was wrong in my previous request to get you to stop. Your blatant disregard for that request has led to some fun discussions. Growth is important for us all.

Cheers

Solid concept but very poor characters

The overall world building concept is fairly standard, a few gaps will be easy to fill, but not bad overall… But the character development is almost painful… Without spoilers, the main character is theoretically badly broken for some reason, and is basically an ass with no redeeming qualities and no real development… except help from his friend, because that’s what friends do, with no real father reciprocating… And there’s no real goal other than to get by… And his anger issues are almost silly… Very similar to a skinny guy going into prison and railing against a gang of harden murderers ... not plausible

What an Extraordinary beginning!

I feel like this is just the first of what could be an epic litrpg universe.
The world building is at it's beginning and you can see the room for expansion the the author has left. I cannot wait to see the rest of it.
The characters are immediately likable yet there is just enough mystery that you aren't quite sure about a couple of them and again I can't wait to see where it goes.
The storytelling itself is fantastic and I really enjoyed it.

Pretty decent storyline, but massively padded-out text

I found the alternative universe storyline quite interesting. The writing was decent quality. However, I found the blatant padding of the book to be very irritating. Every character examined, every level, every skill, etc was headed by an representative image that took up half the page followed by double-line spacing on the stats under the image for even more padding. The author basically wrote a 223 page booked and padded it out to 446 pages.

I enjoyed the Apocosmos arena aspects, but the general storyline didn't appeal to my taste, I felt the crafting aspects weren't for me which did seem to take up many aspects of the book. I loved Rory, Leonardo, and Louie, great characters, Alexander is a little rough, but I got love for him too . The Apocosmos world seems very appealing, I would hope the Storyline would continue in that direction.

Grabbing me from the first chapter, I plunged deep into the book and barely came up for air. Watching the growth of Alex and Louie his Corgi as they try to navigate their new reality, has you cheering at times and looking at your own dog and wondering. Dropping from past to present, leaves you wondering what brought about such a massive change and frankly, fearing the answer yet to come.

Ok, but too many details on the character sheets

Also annoying the MC spent 75% of the book moping and not caring about anyone but his dog. I also would have liked to see a normal progression of the character, instead of the story being told by him. No suspence in what is to come.
I liked the way the world was built and the incluision of Martina and Hansi

Two or three of the reviews are real and the rest are fake.
Low self esteem 3rd world peen waving over explanations covers the text and that's about all that happens in the series. Ugh, if you thought books self published in English are bad, try other languages translated into English. Why don't I ever learn.

Good writing and humor, but not for me.

The author has skill, but this story was too emotional and touchy-feely for my tastes.
I quit reading 28% of the way through the story. After all of the glucose in this story, I gotta' go find a good Grim Dark novel to dilute the sugar in my system. :-)

Awesome.

Loved this one. The violence wasn’t over the top, but still very satisfying. As much as I hated the protagonist in the first half, things turned around! Worth sticking with for sure. When’s the next one coming??

Interesting idea and well written

Great story, if a bit slow to start, not as much fighting as I would normally have liked but definitely sets it up for what I'm sure will be an incredible series

Interesting

The story of the fall of a man, with a dose of hubris like a classic tragedy told in flashback. Looking forward to the next one. One complaint, the overly large buff, skill and character sheet formatting, but it isn't a deal breaker.

What a let down !!

Got through 75% of the book then the writer turned it into a stat book and just forgot about the story, I kept skipping more and more until I just have up on this book!!

Impressive start

Love the style of writing and will definitely follow the author. They book was definitely worth the read. As a note be aware there is a lot of merchant trading in this book and less fighting. Its the beginning of a story with a reason so stick with it.

Got hooked

Love the dog mage and the dwarf. This book is entertaining and kicks but. Its refreshing to read a litrpg with no sex , too much of that rots my brain. Can't wait to read the next one.

Entertaining

This book was good. I found the artwork cute, but it did add a little something to the story. In the beginning I found Alex a real loner, and not very likable, but he grew on me.

phew - beside good critics i really could not learn to like the MC. He got on my nerves from the beginning and there was no silver lining of it getting better.
