Finding Rhythm: An International Dance Journey

Rate this book
One woman embarked on a dance journey around the world, finding out how each dance tells a story of its country and learning how beautiful life can be when you take the lead.

If you could do anything you wanted, what would it be? Aliénor Salmon was working as a happiness researcher in Bangkok when a friend asked her the question that turned life as she knew it on its heels. A novice dancer but experienced social researcher, the Franco-British Aliénor headed west from Bangkok to dance her way through Latin America. As she learns eighteen dances, each native to the countries she visits, she engages with esoteric customs, traditions, and cultures. Through conversations and arduous studio hours, she learns that every step, pivot, and shake thrums with an undeniable spirit of place. And that in a world where we are over-connected but increasingly disconnected from one another, dance offers an authentically human experience. One that allows her to develop tolerance, kindness, truth, and love by holding the hands of a stranger and gazing into their eyes for the time of a song.

With her fearless and candid approach, Aliénor will inspire you to take the reins of your own life—and have some fun along the way. In this dance-travelogue, you’ll learn the history and steps of dances like salsa, samba, and tango, enjoy a resplendent meditation on happiness and wanderlust, and receive a life-affirming answer to the question: How do I take the first step?

Aliénor Salmon is a French–British writer, researcher, and communications consultant. After graduating from King’s College London with a master's degree in war studies, Aliénor worked as a field researcher studying issues related to education in Mongolia and along the Thailand/Myanmar border, before eventually settling in Bangkok where she worked for UNESCO. Through her blog Bailando Journey, she has become a dance influencer and ambassador, promoting the discovery of cultures through dance and dance’s multiple benefits for well-being and personal development. In December 2018, she received official accreditation for journalistic coverage of the Cali Fair, one of the most important traditional music and dance celebrations in Colombia and Latin America. Aliénor consults for UNESCO and other international organizations as a happiness researcher and an expert in social and emotional development. She hosted her first dance and personal development retreat in Havana, Cuba, in November 2019 and plans to host more retreats in other Latin dance capitals around the world, hoping to expand to New York City, Miami, LA, and Puerto Rico. In the meantime, she is focused on creating a virtual dance studio, nightclub, and platform to support dance professionals who are struggling in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic and to spread the joy of dance online. Aliénor resides in Lisbon, Portugal.

2023 bk 236. A wonderful adventure in the world of dance is revealed through Alienor's journey through the western hemisphere. Her writings reveal so much of the culture, history, and lifestyles of the people who are deeply invested in dancing to the music of their home countries / local styles. The country that was was probably most surprising to me was Columbia and the turn around several communities have made. Second most was the revealing of the world of latin dance in New York City - as a founder of certain styles. I felt the ending was a little rushed, but she was running out of money and time by the end of the book, and probably invited to reduce the number of pages for the book for publication. This is a heavy book, but I am glad I read it in print not eformat - it made the dances feel more alive to me.

Such a great book, very inspiring and authentic! Each chapter transports you to a new culture and adventure, it was hard to put it down. You'll also learn many historical facts around dances from latin America. I recommend it to anyone : you don't have to be a dancer or a traveller to be inspired by Aliénor's story!

Poetic musings on the joys of Latin dance and the sense of connection it brings to the self and with others. Aliénor weaves in historical narratives underlying two dozen dances native to serval Latin American countries. I enjoyed following her mental, emotional and physical journey as she challenges herself to learn a variety of dances and absorbs lessons from those she meets. It takes courage to pivot in a dramatic way; in her case, traveling solo through Latin America for ten months. I admire her for questioning what she really wanted from her life and then seeking it out.

I most enjoyed her insights on what dance can bring to a life, especially a modern one where achievements, status and income are often glorified at the expense of "pure and meaningful connections with myself, others, and the world." Aliénor encourages us "tune into ourselves" rather than indulge in outward distractions oriented around consumption, be they social media, news, alcohol, or material things; "We don't need all that much, just each other and the ability to authentically express ourselves."

Aliénor's journey can be described as one of learning the beauty of simplicity and what immersion into the arts can do for the soul. The core competencies that dance offers, she writes, include healthy relationships; attention to detail; the understanding that a single problem has multiple solutions and that our path toward our goals may change during the journey; confident decision-making in the absence of rules; imagination as a fountain of creation; the pursuit of possibilities when faced by limitations; and an understanding of the world from a point of view of ethics and aesthetics.

If you enjoy Latin dance, or have been bitten by the travel bug and want to see Latin America, you will appreciate this sweet read. One word of caution: it may give you the strong urge to quit your job to travel and dance.

"Dance has the divine ability to turn pain into joy — with so many dances created to overcome and provide a living record of some of the greatest hardships in human history, from colonization to slavery. It is a reflection of the human experience, with each style recreating scenes of the past, evoking different emotions, and carrying a unique value system. Dance, like painting and literature, is the expression of history and heritage. But dance, more so than any other art form, requires human interaction; the medium of dance, after all, is people. With dance, I have found a way to reconnect to my basic human needs — making eye contact and holding strangers —and it leaves me with feelings of compassion and connection." She adds, "Dance is not only a form of socialization, it is therapeutic and healing. If this journey has taught me anything, it's how powerful dance can be in making us more accepting of others."

Finished this book a few months ago and had a rollercoaster of emotions during it, felt I had to get some distance to do a fair review as my initial reaction on finishing was a little bit of frustration and disappointment from such high expectations (three star). But it is now the end of the year so here's to hoping that I have mellowed with time (four star):

5 stars for inspiration - A journey after my own heart! I am now very keen to do a similar journey (though fewer places and longer in each country). I very much applaud Aliénor's resolve and turning her dream into a reality. Indeed, I first came across this book through her appearance on Mo Gawdat's 'Slo-Mo' podcast. I lost count of the amount of times I was nodding vigorously in agreement and shrieking with the gratefulness of 'someone else gets what dance means' and could articulate it well - I would highly recommend this podcast to anyone who has arrived here to read reviews of this book. It will give you a short and sweet flavour to the book.

3 stars for writing - Unfortunately, I do not think the articulation expressed in the podcast continued throughout the book. Whilst in the podcast Aliénor was articulate and to the point, I became frustrated with the book meandering through her hungover quest to find her video's perfect backdrop in each location. Moreover, whilst culture was mentioned in each of the chapters (some more than others) I felt the culture of each country, the relation to dances could have been explored in more consistent depth - with again the search for her video backdrop and personal frustrations taking precedence. I think a a similar vein with the history of the dances - though as someone who in part enjoys the dancing for the cultural perceptions and rich history you can gain of a people / country, I felt that this book promised so much yet did not quite deliver. On a similar vein, the author frequently mentions their background as a happiness researcher. Upon learning this I was excited for the slant that this would give the journey through Latin American dances. Unfortunately, I felt this was not interwoven with the themes of dance/cultural insights - I think a missed opportunity.

However, having said all of this I have never been inspired to even consider writing a proper review for a book. As such, I should perhaps give more credit than I appear to have doled out to Ms Salmon for giving such food for thought. In addition, it is likely that the book's overall quest of learning dancing across Latin America struck such a chord with me that I was unable to read it without the bias of how I would alter the journey for myself.

Overall, an easy, inspiring read from which I expected a little more - in part from her discussion on 'Slo-Mo'...the soft part in me is bumping up to four stars

Remember the last time you greeted life as an adventure, and knew that stepping out of the door would lead to wonderful things? If it's been a while since that's been true (or if you're living the adventure as we speak), this book hits. For those of us who haven't yet packed our bags, it reminds us how much adventures are worth having, how they reshape and save us. For those of us who have left, it celebrates the boldness that overcomes fear, the curiosity that opens doors, and the joie de vivre that emanates from living a journey you love. I can't think of a better way to dance around Latin America from the comfort of my own couch. And I definitely have some new ideas percolating for my next trip...

Such an inspiring book! I think many can relate to feeling of wanting to do things that make us happy - but not being able to because of many reasons including that one might be scared to break out of the mold of society expectations. I think many can relate to Alienor’s story - she makes us feel empowered to not be afraid of doing something we enjoy even if we are not an expert. Alienor shows us that the benefits of doing something you love brings are countless, and something you will never regret. Highly recommend this book to everyone!

I absolutely loved this book! The author takes the reader on a journey in so many different countries - and it truly feels like we are there with her, experiencing the vibe, the music, the colours.
I liked the fact that I’ve learned many things about the history and cultural heritage of the countries she’s visited as well. I think anyone can relate to this story as it reminds each person that we should never give up on our dreams because they seem too crazy! Aliénor shows us that letting go of our fears can be key to happiness and wellbeing. Highly recommended!

What a refreshing book! Even if I am not a dancer, this initiatic journey through both America's dances, moved me, made me think about my own life choices and dreams and ultimately laugh a lot. Aliénor"s vulnerability and honesty made the story feel incredibly vibrant and authentic. If you get only one book this year, get this one. It will make you travel, feel, think, laugh and cry! Have a good read!

Inspiring and engaging, this book showed me how dance and movement can be a powerful medium to connect to ourselves, others, and the world around us. Especially in these challenging times, this is an uplifting read. Aliénor's story is a wonderful exploration into different dances, cultures, human connection and perseverance. She drew me into her journey brilliantly. Will happily be re-reading!

This was a very good read! I enjoyed following along on the journey from country to country, dance style to dance style, all the while learning about history through the dance and food and culture that she experienced. This was a very educational read while being such fun. I have recommended it to a number of people already.

Totally love this book. I immediately was drawn into the main character's struggle, the loss of close relations. Even if dancing isn't your cup of tee, you will enjoy this book, because it's about following your passion and connecting to people, connecting to life.

Loved going on this dance journey - so many unexpected events, characters and twists! :) The only downside to this book is that sometimes I'd like to dig deeper into specific stories and happenings to savor the moment a little longer.

I loved it! Super inspiring and fun!

It reads like a novel, but there's a lot of background info on the evolution and heritage of the different dances. It was so fun to read, but at the same time I feel like I've learnt something as well :)

As a salsa dancer based in NY, I was very impressed with Aliénor's depth of research and her commitment to learning not only the dances but their cultural histories, too. A fun and informative read about the beautiful, diverse world of Latin dance!

My favorite book this year. Tone is so respectful and appreciative. Descriptions help so much imagine not only each space on every country but the fears and joy that come along with challenges in life. I would love to see the videos recorded during Alienor' s journey!

An enlivening odyssey that transposes the reader into a vivid 'Latin sueño' which, in turn, becomes self-actualized.

Ms. Salmon has a talent descirbing the undulant movements of bodies and hands, of the various dances she experiences, throughout her jaunts. So much so, one can definitely feel 'being there' thougout the book.

Beyond the dance and drama component, I did enjoy the historical anecdotes that are interwoven thoughout the book. This makes it a read applicable to readers interested (perhaps males) in just this facinating history alone.
