Keith Ian Giffen was an American comic book illustrator and writer. He is possibly best-known for his long runs illustrating, and later writing the Legion of Super-Heroes title in the 1980s and 1990s. He also created the alien mercenary character Lobo (with Roger Slifer), and the irreverent "want-to-be" hero, Ambush Bug. Giffen is known for having an unorthodox writing style, often using characters in ways not seen before. His dialogue is usually characterized by a biting wit that is seen as much less zany than dialogue provided by longtime collaborators DeMatteis and Robert Loren Fleming. That approach has brought him both criticism and admiration, as perhaps best illustrated by the mixed (although commercially successful) response to his work in DC Comics' Justice League International (1987-1992). He also plotted and was breakdown artist for an Aquaman limited series and one-shot special in 1989 with writer Robert Loren Fleming and artist Curt Swan for DC Comics.

Giffen's first published work was "The Sword and The Star", a black-and-white series featured in Marvel Preview, with writer Bill Mantlo. He has worked on titles (owned by several different companies) including Woodgod, All Star Comics, Doctor Fate, Drax the Destroyer, Heckler, Nick Fury's Howling Commandos, Reign of the Zodiac, Suicide Squad, Trencher (to be re-released in a collected edition by Boom! Studios)., T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents, and Vext. He was also responsible for the English adaptation of the Battle Royale and Ikki Tousen manga, as well as creating "I Luv Halloween" for Tokyopop. He also worked for Dark Horse from 1994-95 on their Comics Greatest World/Dark Horse Heroes line, as the writer of two short lived series, Division 13 and co-author, with Lovern Kindzierski, of Agents of Law. For Valiant Comics, Giffen wrote XO-Manowar, Magnus, Robot Fighter, Punx and the final issue of Solar, Man of the Atom.

He took a break from the comic industry for several years, working on storyboards for television and film, including shows such as The Real Ghostbusters and Ed, Edd 'n' Eddy.

He is also the lead writer for Marvel Comics's Annihilation event, having written the one-shot prologue, the lead-in stories in Thanos and Drax, the Silver Surfer as well as the main six issues mini-series. He also wrote the Star-Lord mini-series for the follow-up story Annihilation: Conquest. He currently writes Doom Patrol for DC, and is also completing an abandoned Grant Morrison plot in The Authority: the Lost Year for Wildstorm.

Heh. Even though it's not quite as good as "I can't believe it's not the Justice League" (mostly because it lacks Guy), this is hilarious. This includes some of my favorite Booster/Beetle moments plus several really funny (if probably out of character) Batman scenes. Hee. If you like books that have one really silly joke after the other, this is the book for you.

Giffen, DeMatteis, Maguire. Ci riprovano.

Not much of a plot but a collection of continuous jokes and fourth wall breaking, so just expect a short comedy book with dry humour.

While I've yet to read JLI, the characters were very flanderised which was fine at first but became annoying as nobody liked each other - even Booster and Beetle who have always been close friends.

The pacing is also strange with the first two issues dragging on and the rest rushing the nonexistent conflict, so my main complaint would be that while it's entertaining, not much actually happens.

A failed attempt to re-capture the goofy glory of the original "Justice League International." One that brings all characters it touches to a new, lower level. Don't bother reading this, even, no ESPECIALLY, if you like any character on the cover. I'm a big Booster Gold and Captain Atom fan, and I couldn't stand this. Skip it. Details below:

Plot: So, the book starts out with a basic "putting the team together" story with Max Lord and L-Ron. Basically everyone joins readily: Ted Kord, Fire, Booster Gold, Elongated Man and his wife, Captain Atom, and Mary Marvel. This is quickly followed by a "someone captured the heroes and forces them to fight" plotline, and then a alien take-over (Manga Khan) that just falls apart and can't be taken seriously. And that's it.

Characterization: If you thought you knew them, hear this: Take everything you knew about them, and turn up the "goofy and clueless" factor up to 11. Because they ALL act like jerks, not idiots anymore. Booster acts like even more of an idiot than he was; Beetle's partway serious, and partway jerk; Mary Marvel is as clueless and childlike as Captain Marvel ever was; Fire is a lewd biker chick; Max and L-Ron function mainly as some kind of tired comedy duo, etc. etc.
It's painful to read. They're all supposed to be adults, and they act like middle-schoolers. Even when a teammate almost dies, they don't even care- it rolls into a "wrong-number" style comedy thing while Beetle can't remember Max's number and doesn't trust Booster to watch over their fallen comrade.

The problem seems to be that someone who doesn't know how is trying to write "goofy" comedy. It worked before, in the old JLI and JLA books, because there was balance. I've read a lot of those old ones, and it always worked because even the goofy characters could take things seriously, so you knew they weren't just idiots. And they acted like heroes, if a bit goofy, in that they cared about other people, In this book, most of the time is spent bickering, rating each other on the "attractiveness" scale, and being pretty overtly sexist. Even Booster and Beetle act like they hate each other- if this was the first thing you read about any of these characters, there is NO WAY you'd think they were supposed to be friends.

And I guess that's the main problem. Even if they were a bit clumsy as heroes, they always did their job, and they cared about each other. Here, they don't even do that. There's nothing really redeemable about this team, and that leaks onto the characters. Even when Martian Manhunter, Batman, and Wonder Woman step in to solve something, THEY act like jerks, rather uncharacteristically. Just a poor writing job, all the way around.

Wasn't fond of the representation of women in this book. The art was good though... Some of the characters where not in character at all, particularly Batman. Booster gold and Blue Beetle's bickering became grating and tedious. I also feel booster was really dumbed down in this book. I got so close to the end but I couldn't deal with reading this any longer.

I don't like posting low star reviews, but the only ting keeping this from being 1 star review is that Maguire's pencils remain as charming and expressive as ever. It's a shame the rest of the book is hanging on repeating the same set of jokes from the mid 80's over and over again some 15 years later (and we are now more than 15 years from that). The comedy, if anything, became more spiteful over the years, and it's clear that the creative team just really, really doesn't like their characters. This isn't like Keith Giffin's _Ambush Bug_ where he and Robert Lauren Fleming can get incoherent at times but their love of the genre and medium shines through. Giffin and DeMatteis - and maybe it's just the latter since the issue is with the scripting - are simply mean spirited. Though to be fair the 6 issue plot is a rambling mess.

I honestly had hopes that in the last issue we might see some breaktrough, some catharsis, some evolution or growth in the Booster Gold/Blue Beetle relationship that would validate what had been a core through line of the original series, but the emotional stakes are raised, raised, raised, and the n subverted for one of the same jokes again.

I'm not as big of a fan of Giffen's original JLI run as everyone else seems to be. I thought it was way too long, and rarely focused on its strong points, instead getting bogged down in generic repetitive 80's superhero fare. The run was at its best when it was a simple workplace comedy. Thankfully, "Formerly Known as the Justice League" leans very heavy into the superhero sitcom angle, and it's great. I was surprised how consistently funny it was. Not every joke landed of course, especially not the extremely weird fetishism over 16-year-old Mary Marvel, but the ratio was pretty good. This miniseries smartly does away with just about every flaw of the original run, and replaces it with succinct, focused, comedic storytelling. Unfortunately, it does basically require that you've read the original run to get a lot of the jokes, but I can live with that. I see this series (and its sequel) as a kind of reward for making it through Giffen's original JLI.

I liked this when I picked it up, but it's leaving my collection. While it lovingly recreates the work by Giffen, DeMatteis, and Maguire from their 80's run on Justice League (the wonderful facial expressions, the hyperverbosity, the running comic schtick), this revisiting suffers from two issues, One, it decides to make far too much hay over adult men ogling a sixteen-year-old Mary Marvel. Two, it heavily features Manga Khan and his host of cybernetic life forms, one of the least interesting cast of characters from the original JL run.

It started off really boring with the first 2 issues, and even tho it picked up at issue 3 the rest of the mini (4,5,6) were still really boring with an incoherent plot I didn’t understand in the slightest and way too much dialogue for me to think it was just fine, also this book felt misogynist at times, although everyone’s characterization was really weird. Also I don’t understand why the justice league appeared on the end

Superheroes as sitcom. In the 80s, “Justice League” was improbably rebooted as a character-driven comedy featuring mostly minor characters. Stranger still, the book was enough of a success to justify a spin-off, “Justice League Europe.” The two books kept going into the 90s before declining sales led to their cancellations, only for the creative teams to return in the 21st Century for occasional mini-series, of which “Formerly Known as The Justice League” was the first.

Writers Keith Giffen and J.M. Demattis found plenty of humor in the DC Universe.

It’s more of 3.5 but i couldn’t bring myself to upvote it to a 4. While the character interaction is great, the plot is just bad. Seeing Manga Khan was wonderful. If you loved JLI, you’ll enjoy this.

A delightful return for the creative team behind Justice League international, bringing back their "superhero comics as sitcom" thing a decade later without missing a beat. A little unfocused as a story, but the plots were never the important thing in their comics anyway.

Ah, a trip down memory lane, when comics used to be FUN!!

When Keith Giffen and co came up with Justice League International back in the 80's, it was deliberately funny, a reaction to the grim and grittiness brought on by the Dark Knight and Watchmen. Lord knows, we need this stuff even more today (see my review of Green Lantern Blackest Day)....

However, even though this is great fun, great art, great gags....it doesn't do some of the old guys any credit - Blue Beetle and Booster Gold (et al) were actually effective superheroes (if not very serious ones) - they did repel the whole alien Invasion of the late 80's - defeating the Dominion, the Knund and so on. In this story they don't actually do that much superheroics and even need the "real" JLA to come bail them out.

If our heroes could have been a bit more heroic, this would have 4 stars.

But shucks, read it, if nothing else it reminds you that comics can actually be a laugh.

I’d have never believed it in my youth, but DC has a sense of humor. I guess the first inkling on my radar was that first, classic, righteous, amazing Lobo miniseries. Formerly Known As The Justice League has entrepreneur Maxwell Lord pulling together former JL members and a few new faces to make a “people’s” superhero team who, like Ghostbusters, come runnin’ when you call for help. What’s awesome is that it seems like little more than an excuse for Giffen and DeMatteis to have monkey time. Seriously, there’s a plot, but the joke’s the thing. It has the pacing and entertainment feel of a sitcom, which works pretty well with the occasional action sequences thrown in. The art is classic/modern comic book art, which I find I prefer over a lot of the less refined indie stuff. And the faces! The faces these characters make are classic. A pretty fun read.

Mooooooyy Bueno

I LOVED the Justice League after Crisis, because no longer was it all big guns (Superman,Batman & Wonder Woman), it was characters who were "defective". Heck, the writing on that book got so good, I started enjoying Martian Manhunter (who is second only to Aquaman for worst DC hero).
Giffen took the League's players from that time period (who could forget Booster and Blue Beetle and the living island they tried to make a resort on? or the killer penguins from Justice League Antarctica?) and brought them up to date, while retaining their issues from years past!
This is a fun book to read and enjoy, but don't expect it to be part of the modern mythos - DC editorial seems to believe that all the good things from the past should be retconned and forgotten!
