A homeless man is mysteriously abducted. A journal is left on the edge of a subway platform, filled with stories about a world that doesn't exist. Not far from here a scientist is murdered in cold blood. The only clues are his burned down lab. A magnetically propelled motorcycle, and a man walking around New York City with the last living falcon on the planet.
Imagine a world where your every thought, your every move, is filtered through The Central Lens Network. Now imagine being a twelve-year old boy and discovering a special pair of lenses that allow you to access this network undetected. This is exactly what happens to Matthew Glen the day his father is murdered then two years later mysteriously appears back in his life.
In a style that echoes back to the Dark Age of Comics when graphic novels were coming into an art form of their own, "Myopia" merges science fiction with noir steampunk into a thrilling alternative reality, where government and big business use entertainment devices to cover up a new authoritarian landscape.
Richard Dent is the creator of the graphic series "Myopia" from Dynamite Entertainment. His poetry and fiction have won numerous awards, and he teaches at Cal State, Los Angeles, and in the National University MFA program.
Some pretty stunning artwork in this futuristic, steampunk-influenced tale. MYOPIA presents a dystopian world in which humans have fully integrated with machines that are worn like contact lenses. I especially liked the future imagined as a wild mishmash of the styles and influences of centuries past; people are costumed in everything from Victorian styles to 1970s and '80s fashion.
This book is fairly complicated for a comic book series. If you tear through it like a regular comic you're probably not going to "get it." The art in the book is beautiful. As far as the story, there are three different themes. Technology dependence, government overreach and the never ending exploitation of the earth's delicate resources. This is also the story of 12 year old boy and the loss of his father, a twisty murder mystery if you will. You can read the full Kurkis Review here:
"Set two hundred years in the future, society has grown depended on high tech lenses; then the government takes over the company that makes the lenses and uses them to manipulate what people think and see."
Myopia by Richard Dent is a visually stunning, thought-provoking graphic novel set in a richly layered alternate reality where science, politics, and corporate power collide. With gorgeous, atmospheric art and a storyline dense with lore, this book pulls you deep into a world that feels both eerily familiar and completely unique.
Dent crafts a narrative that blends noir sensibilities with sharp social commentary, exploring themes of control, surveillance, and identity. The alternate reality he presents is grounded enough to resonate, yet strange enough to provoke wonder and unease. It’s the kind of world that rewards close reading and lingers in your mind long after.
The artwork is exceptional—elegant, moody, and cinematic—bringing the story’s philosophical undercurrents to life with bold visuals and haunting detail. Every panel feels purposeful, a reflection of the care and craft poured into every aspect of the book.
Winner of the 2024 Indie Author Showcase Graphic Novel of the Year, Myopia is a must-read for fans of speculative fiction, graphic novels with depth, and stories that challenge the way we see the world.
