In this inspirational guide, Don Shula explains how his coaching methods have made him such a success, then Ken Blanchard reveals how those same principles can be used to motivate any group, from a sales team to a Little League team. These two world-renowned successes inspire listeners not just to set goals, but to achieve them.
Excellent book on leadership and winning from a businessman and a successful NFL coach, Don Shula. The books' five main points follow a simple acronym (COACH)that any person wishing to be a leader can follow:
Confidence-driven (never compromise your beliefs Overlearning (practice until it's perfect) Audible-ready (know when to change) Consistency (respond predictably to performance) Honesty-based (walk your talk)
The book delves into what makes a good leader and Shula is defined as a man of integrity and principle. Former players and officials talk about dealing with Shula on and off the field, and he comes across as a truly class act, which is something you don't see much in sports anymore. An excellent book for would-be managers or supervisors.
I read this book for a leadership class when I was getting my Bachelor's. I picked this book since it was co-wrote by the former Miami Dolphin's Coach.
Excellent book that I thoroughly enjoyed reading. The entire book has very useful ways to be an effective coach, mentor, teacher, leader, role - model, etc.. The principals are applicable to any career. This will be a book I plan on referring back to often.
I was surprised by this book. I received it in a silent auction basket more than a year ago. It had sat on my night stand. Finally I picked it up, and am glad I did. It was a quick read, but it offered much by way of how to treat and encourage people. I think I may use it as a dinnertime devotion for my family.
A must read for any manager. I had no idea who Don Shula was until my exasperated husband informed me. He thinks I must have grown up on an island not to know the incredible Dolphins coach. Anyway Don's insights were worth reading. I thought Ken Blanchard merely reiterated what Shula came up with, so you can just skip most of his stuff and make it a quick read that will help motivate you to be a powerful leader.
Great ideas to incorporate. I thoroughly enjoyed getting advice from Coach Shula. I think he brings an interesting perspective to anyone who is responsible to help others with performance and for improvement in managing personal performance.
