A collection of nineteen short stories, this book tells a story of two grandparents, Ajji and Ajja, telling their grandchildren stories they have never heard before during the difficult days of quarantine.

The stories are told from their imagination, most by the grandmother, Ajji, on various topics dealing with the possible reasons of the origin of rice and wheat to gods and goddesses; culture and customs; animals and toys; ships and mysteries; families as well as luck and honour.

I find the stories quite fun and interesting, so well written, fit for middle grade, also teaching them the goodness of sharing and caring, teaching them basic responsibility and how to actively include them in discussions and chores.

A good one indeed!

I got so transported to the village and the house this book describes that I finished it the same day and in 1 sitting.

The book is based on the life of people and the community itself during the nationwide lockdown in India in the 1st wave of COVID in 2020.

Plot : With parents coping up with the new indefinite work from home set up and with Children's schools closed, the grandparents suddenly get visited by their grandkids just before lockdown. The book is how the grandparents and all the kids manage their entire house in the village and also help the community coping up with the lockdown; how the grandparents at the end of every day keep the kids entertained with their stories.

It was super fun to read and I really felt one with the kids for those few hours that I read the book.

Our favourite literary 'ajji' returns with another bagful of stories, fables and life-lessons. Centered around our topical situation of living amidst a pandemic, Sudha Murty takes us back to Shiggaon where her main characters, Ajji and Ajja try to make the lockdown as stress-free and productive as possible for their grandchildren.

Between doing simple household chores and making arrangements for the people who have been adversely affected by the lockdown, the elders keep the children entranced with their never-ending stories. Through these tales, we revisit Gods, kings, princesses, animals, demons and saintly men who manage to impart some essential tidbit of everyday wisdom.

This book will always be special for me because only after I brought it home, did I realize that I had a signed copy in my hands. Sudha Murty's blend of practical advice and fanciful fables still work their magic. And to see her words on the first page almost feels like a blessing.

Definitely worth a read.

Grandparents bag of stories is a beautiful book to treasure. It's about Grandparents who are telling stories to their grandchildren's who came to visit them. It's a collection of 19 stories that will bring a smile on your face, will make you understand many things.

Sudha Murty with her words, once again made the readers fall in love with her writing. The stories that will entertain kids with lessons for life. Each story is beautifully narrated with a lesson for life.

There are many stories like a sibling story, Goddess of luck, Arrival of rice, the world of wheat and many other while we are unaware of. Especially the sibling story. Why Naga Panchami is celebrated is wonderfully explained by the author. I cannot choose any one story to be my favourite, each story is special to me. A must-read book for each one of us, especially for the Lil ones.

It's good, easy read.
The book has around 15-20 stories
Some of stories don't make much sense, but they all are quite engaging.

It's fun to read such stories to take your mind off from something

Sudha Murty is the most simplest yet beautiful author. This book will make people smile in the hardest of times. Her writing style is straightforward and admirable. This book taught me to stay close to my family, lend a helping hand whenever possible, and ofcourse to ask my grandparents long in tooth tales of our childhood. It reminds us that difficult situations (like the lockdown) can be dealt if we have someone to get it through with :)
Must read!!

Please skip the last story! It's mean and not suitable for children.

I didn't expect to enjoy this book until the last story. My partner's niece gifted me this book, and it's my first Sudha Murthy book.

The stories are a bit preachy, but they're well-written. I wouldn't have minded giving this book as a gift to children above seven, but the last story changed my mind.

When I read it, I was furious – it was sly, racist, and out of place in a children's book, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. I still can't believe it won the Sahitya Akademi's Bal Sahitya Puraskar 2023 award.

Without the last story, I would have been a vocal ambassador for Sudha Murthy's books, but that story made the entire experience bitter.

There is something comforting about how Sudha Murthy writes , some kind of familiarity, and it really does feel like it's your own Dadi and Dada who are telling the tales .
I could see the sources of inspiration for most stories ( I guess that's where the familiarity kicks in )
Overall, I usually don't enjoy kiddie stories, but there's always some kind of exception !

Happy reading !

Ordered this book without knowing that it was topical and published in lockdown with stories of lockdown weaved in. Children are with their grandparents when the lockdown happens and then they have their share of fun through stories during the same. As always, stories have morals and values inherently baked in.

✳️These past few days I've been very busy and haven't had enough time to read a new book. But I really wanted to start a new one. So as always, children's book came to my mind as a solution. 'Grandparents' Bag of Stories' is actually the second book I have read by the author Sudha Murty. Just like the title, the book contains a big bag of stories that can be enjoyed by both kids and adults alike.✳️

✳️'Grandparents' Bag of Stories' is filled with lots of cautionary tales for children. As this story is written in times of pandemic, the book also teaches kids how to take care of themselves in such a situation. So I must say, this is very helpful for the young ones. I mean we all know how children are. If they are taught through stories, it will help them understand better.✳️

✳️OMG, the illustrations were really beautiful. I loved it, so I am sure the kids will too. The drawings are not made like those from a comic strip or a graphic novel. If I remember correctly, two pics per chapter. It was apt and perfect. Usually, when I read such novels, one or two stories will always have a touch that gives me the impression of having heard these stories somewhere before. But here, each story was new and brilliant. And the manner in which the author narrated it was so simple and elegant at the same time. If you love reading them or wish to share the stories with your little ones, then I would definitely recommend this book.✳️

This book reminds me of constantly asking my grandpa to tell stories.

These short stories though can’t be engaging for adults, teaches children morals through it.

I can’t wait to become a mother/ grandmother and tell stories to my offsprings and theirs too.

A Story a Day Keeps All Troubles Away…
“Grandparents Bag of Stories”, has stories of princes and kings, ordinary but witty men, women and children, magical beanstalks and kingdoms and palaces, which are narrated by grandparents to their grandchildren to keep them curious at the same time engaged during this pandemic…

Work from home, virtual learning, lockdowns, and quarantines have pestered us in every way possible since the beginning of this uncalled-for situation. Though, it has affected the older as well as younger generation massively. This book is specially written for those little people in our lives that make a big difference.

7 Grandchildren have come to their grandparent’s house in the lockdown. This book is about the collection of stories that these children get to listen to while helping Ajji and Ajja do the daily chores as well as help others out in these unprecedented times.

“Remember the stories and lessons you have learned in the last few months? Keeping your word, being kind and polite, helping others is like helping yourself, keep surroundings clean!” Ajji said. “This was a different holiday…” said Ajja. Both Ajji and Ajja taught their grandchildren so many lessons through stories that are so engaging that not only children but elders also enjoy reading and listening to them. The stories have a background of what the story is going to be about without giving the exact information or wordings about it. After all, who can resist a good story especially when it's coming from a grandma, right?

The author is a prolific writer and has created stories with her wild and free imagination. The simple yet catchy language keeps you glued to every story that is there in the book. She has become both Ajja and Ajji and also the children, the main characters in the book.

Every grandparent play and replay the list of their childhood stories for their grandchildren. We also love to hear those stories no matter however old we become..

"Books are never failing friends
Real joy is reading books"
-Sudha Murty
With this quote handwritten by Sudha Murty herself, I recieved my first signed copy from @oxfordbookstores. This is my second read by Sudha Murty after reading "Something happened on the way to heaven". This book written during covid time with refrence to the current scenario referred to was a fun read. It reminded me of the days when I used to listen stories from my grandmother as she used to feed me, she told me tales of Cindrella,Snow White, Rapunzel ,the Thirsty crow, little lovelies like Red Ridding Hood and I used to have lot of fun sitting in the balcony listening to her which she used as a technique to make me eat as I was a bad eater. My mother picked up this ritual as well from her .
This book has short sweet stories being told by the grandparents to the five children's visiting the grandpa and grand ma's house during the early lockdown. Each chapter begins with children having fun each day and requesting their Ajji or Ajja for lovely tales which the grandparent's often used as a teaching aid to give them a moral lesson at the end of each story. The stories were so filled with innocence and love that made me feel warm and heartful inside. The stories of miser men, poor farmers, rich kings, wise men and many other were so filled with fantasy which is sure to empower one's imagination and help transform to a new world with each flick of page. With many illustrations this book will truly be one of my friend which will remind me of kindness whenever I will think of it again. 😊

𝗕𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 - "𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀’ 𝗕𝗮𝗴 𝗢𝗳 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀" 𝗯𝘆 𝗦𝘂𝗱𝗵𝗮 𝗠𝘂𝗿𝘁𝘆

One of my happiest childhood memories is when we used to visit our grandparents. We used to sleep on the roof of the house, and our grandma used to tell us all these magical stories. My personal favourite used to be that of a cat and its five kittens.

Sudha Murty reminded me of this memory and everything in it. Lockdown has brought a lot of uncertainty in our lives, and kids are equally affected. Ajju and Ajji tried to make these difficult times a bit easier for their grandchildren by taking them to a world full of magical creatures.

The book is a collection of 19 short stories that I thoroughly enjoyed. There are so many stories which I would love to share with my kids one day. Through these tales, you will get to revisit Gods, kings, animals, demons, princesses, and saintly men who manage to impart some essential tidbit of everyday wisdom.

And this book is doubly special for us as it is a signed copy. Sudha Murty’s fanciful fables and her beautiful tales would work their magic on kids and adults alike.

Highly recommend this book especially to those who have kids, nephews or nieces.

This is obviously a book for kids, and I am not one, I'm a teenager who had nothing other than this to read, so I ll just try to think from the mindset of 8yr old me. This belonged to my little cousins who seemed to be into it a little, but not too much. This book was ok, kids will like it but probably won't love it.

I like how the book instructs and informs children about covid-19. It's presented plain enough for them to understand, without scaring the living daylights out of them.

Books are never perfect for everyone, but this one fell a little too off the mark from my perspective. First off, I love Sudha Murty as a person but not as much as a writer. So that plays into this book as well, I am personally not a fan of her writing style and that affects the rating. Secondly, I felt like i have heard these stories elsewhere, with slight differences. Some stories can be told again and again, but some of these retellings just fell flat.

Who doesn't love to listen to stories!

"Grandparents' Bag of Stories" reminds us of our childhood vacations at our Grandparents' place. The book is set in the background of COVID-19. The parents have sent their children to their Grandparents' place since it gets hard for them to keep the children within the locked doors due to lockdown. The house of Ajja and Ajji is spacious and has ample of open space in front with a blooming vegetable garden. The Grandparents tell 19 moral stories about honesty, hard work, helping each other, luck etc to the Grandchildren during their stay.

A few things I liked about the book is one of the stories was made by and told by a child - "why can't I also tell a story like Ajja and Ajji." The author has encouraged kids not just to read and listen to stories but also to create their own. The other thing I liked about this book is how the kids help their grandparents with household chores - this is a wonderful attempt to encourage kids nowadays to take up a few easy household chores.

The book is written in simple and easy-to-understand English and is perfect for kids and even adults. What could have been better is the flow - at times Ajja and Ajji would say now I am going to tell you a story of XYZ who was ABC. The kids and grandparents are doing something but suddenly comes the story-telling session. So the overall flow in the book changes abruptly.

One of those books that you read slowly as you don’t want it to finish early !
What a brilliant collection of stories and lessons in them for the kids to learn and follow in their house. Although the whole book is cantered around the idea of kids living at their grandparents house during lockdown and included multiple stories it still had the power to make me get lost in the world of Aditi, Meenu, Raghu, Anouska and my lovely Ajji’s and Ajja 🥰 It had swelled my heart and made me grin throughout when I was reading it ! 😀
Can’t wait to get my nephews and neices and to recite these to them ! 😀😇🤗

This book! It's gorgeous.
Sudha Murty has definitely brought up a lot of emotions that we all went through at some point in our lives during lockdown. ESPECIALLY CHILDREN
Full of not only the lockdown story but other amazing short stories too that are both funny and heartwarming!
The' how rice came on Earth' and rat-cat-dog-lion-ant' stories are my favourite.

And I got a signed copy from Amazon!
A must read. I relived mostly all the emotions that I went through during the lockdown including sorrow, sadness, laughter and a ray of believe in the hearts.

Collection of 19 stories which somewhere we have heard in our childhood through our grand-parents. I wanted to read it and personally, I liked it. Of course, this is not for elite-class book readers. This book is the simplest storybook I have ever read.
Sudha Murthy, the co-founder of Infosys and the better-half of The Narayan Murthy have framed this story in the quarantine time and I totally admire her for this work.
Great.

What a lovely read. I'm totally loving this book, it just took me to a world of childhood innocence. Yes, it felt like I was one of those curious grandkids. Also, my heart was aching just like ajji when kamlu ajji & the kids left after vacation. So much to learn from each story, reminded me of those childhood days when I was excitedly reading panchathantra.
I'll say, it's a book for all ages if you like to get back to your inner child. Love you Sudha Murthy Mam & Thank you so much.

I like episodic books, with each chapter come a moral story for kids in this one - typical Sudha Murthy.
With COVID in the backdrop, this is a very current & relevant book. But the stories were largely unimpactful and meh... unlike "How I taught my Grandmother to Read" which is a classic unforgettable story.
Definitely not one the best publications from the author.
