Love like a Saint: Cultivating Virtue with Holy Women

Rate this book
In Love Like a Saint, you are invited to be inspired by remarkable saints-virtuous, flawed, and real women who teach us how to surrender to God and be open to his grace. The women you will meet in this book have cultivated virtue through a life of surrender and love in the midst of deep sorrows and trials. They are students, wives, employees, friends, mothers, and will be your companions in your faith journey. Designed and written as a living workbook to be read in Adoration, as a study, or in prayer and meditation-either alone or in a small group.

This was a good book which paired a saint with a virtue, and explored how they each lived a virtuous life. Journal prompts/questions and scripture to reflect on assist one with working to grow in each virtue while journeying through the book. I appreciated how Elizabeth Kelly wrote about several less known (some unknown to me) saints. I enjoyed this book, the fruitful conversations it provided with my Bible study, and the encouragement it provided to strive to grow in virtue.

This little book of inspiration has mini biographies about 7 women who persevered through various obstacles in times where most would probably end up in despair.

Anne de Guigne lived only to the age of 11, 1911-1922, but her short life was a display of how obedience, even in the littlest things, always results in joy.

Benedetta Bianchi Porro displayed perseverance as she went through life crippled and eventually blind with facial paralysis. She wasn't angry about her lot in life though, she still found things to be happy about. Because of this, she was also a wonderful friend and developed some extraordinary friendships.

Elizabetta Mora was in a terrible marriage, treated poorly by her husband, and gossiped about by others. Yet her patience was astounding.

Mary MacKillop displayed the virtues of hope and wisdom and was the person in the book that I found the most inspiring. She lived in Australia through the early 1900's. She had a tough childhood and just wanted to be able to help others. She eventually found her calling in starting a school, which was no easy task. For some reason she was deeply ridiculed by other people. Untrue rumors were spread about her and she was persecuted in ways that were so incredibly unfair. Yet, she remained humble. She went on about her work with faithfulness and cheerfulness without ever displaying bitterness. She wasn't desperate to clear her good name or save her reputation. She didn't look to get revenge on those who were so awful to her. Her motto was "With humility, charity, and truth, all will be well in the end. Have patience, and fear nothing." This was a quick and easy read, but full of inspiration!

Saints. Venerable Anne de Guigne (obedience). A little girl who was a tyrant changed into a little lamb and she died at the age of 10. Blessed Benedetta Bianchi Porro (friends and perseverance). She studied to become a doctor and then diagnosed her own disease where she lost the use of her hearing, her eyes, her sense of touch, etc. Blessed Elizabetta Canori Mora (Patience). She suffered at the hands of her cruel husband but she stayed with him and he eventually became a priest. Servant of God Catherine de Hueck Doherty (silence). She ended an abusive marriage then lived in poverty in Harlem until she was discovered by the Chautauqua speaking circuit. Saint Josephine Bakhita (faith and courage). She was kidnapped at an early age and was sold four different times and was beaten almost daily while she was a slave. Saint Mary of the Cross Mary MacKillop (hope and wisdom). Her father almost became a priest and her parents shared their Catholic faith with her and she started a Catholic School in Australia. Saint Mary Magdalene (love). She was possessed by demons and was not a prostitute as popularly thought and she was thinking of herself as unlovable until she experienced the love of God.

The 8 week virtual book club was very good. I enjoyed reading about the saints and their virtues. Each saint had a different path to their faith. The journal and questions were also good. I enjoyed the coloring pages as a form of meditation on a weekly Bible selection. I am looking forward to the fall session.

I really enjoyed learning about some women of the faith I was not familiar with. The author related each woman to a virtue, and also included discussion questions, related scripture, and excerpts from the woman’s own writings. While the relationship to the virtue wasn’t always clear to me, I found a lot here to inspire my own spiritual journey.

Elizabeth Kelly has chosen saints most have not heard of before. She pulls together their stories and ties them to applicable virtues and relevancy in our lives. She has discussion journaling questions and suggested Scripture for each saint. Each saint has a page, " IN HER OWN WORDS".

A good one for all the catholic girlies :) It’s a pretty fast read, so I recommend splitting up the chapters and using the journal prompts during quiet reflection/prayer time over a period of time to fully absorb it.

lots of little nuggets in here and some saints I don't remember hearing about before, which is always a refreshing reminder of the vastness of the church and her history.

We read this book as a women’s group at church. A really good book. I couldn’t relate to all the women but there were a few I could.
