After surviving Tonegawa's dastardly schemes set outside of the hotel tower, Kaiji was let inside the building for what may be one last chance to pay off his debts. But while his last two tests were partially physical and emotional, this new game is a test of wills. E-Card is a simple card game but when played against someone who says he can read minds, it may be an impossible game to win at consistently! Kaiji has gone too far now, so he'll literally put his body on the line as payback!
Nobuyuki Fukumoto (福本伸行Fukumoto Nobuyuki) is a Japanese manga artist well known throughout the Far East for his unique and original gambling ideas, deep psychological analysis of characters and distinct artstyle. Yakuza and gambling are recurring themes in his manga. In English speaking countries, he is known best as the author of Akagi, a mahjong-related manga. In 1998, he won the Kodansha Manga Award for Tobaku Mokushiroku Kaiji. An onomatopoeia "zawa" (ざわ…), meaning an uneasy atmosphere, appears frequently in his comics and is considered Fukumoto's trademark. In June 2010, he visited Finland as a guest of honor for Desucon.
Maybe a little overblown at times especially in the bridge crossing arc. But the Emperor arc was fantastic. And such a fantastic psychological game
I was surprised to see this wasn't the end. That actually Gambling Apocalypse is only the first part of the Kaiji series.
NB this is me covering the second half of Gambling Apocalypse Kaiji as I didn't read them as single volumes I just blasted through the second half of the manga and also the Japanese version is 13 volumes while the English releases collect the same chapters into 6.
As someone who doesn't understand the allure of gambling, this series has been sort of challenging for me to get through. The stakes have been insane to me, and the twist was almost too obvious- but I had to bring myself back, considering how much shit the guy's gone through in the past few hours of the story's setting. Nobody could think straight after all that, I'm sure. Just solidifying my solid hatred for wealthy businessmen lmaoooo
