Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth challenges Christians to ask themselves tough Who decides what I will wear, and why? What message does my clothing communicate? And, how can I reflect the glory of God in my wardrobe? Biblical, practical and motivating, "The Look" challenges women (young or older), parents, and teens to discover the Truth about clothing and modesty, and to make choices based on God's eternal perspective.
Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth also known as Nancy Leigh DeMoss is the host and teacher for Revive Our Hearts and Seeking Him, two nationally-syndicated programs heard each weekday on over 1,000 radio stations. She is a mentor and spiritual mother to thousands of women and a leader of the True Woman movement.
This was a good book/pamphlet. An easy, short read but full of information and valuable advice. The perfect size to pass on to preteen and teen girls without overwhelming them.
Mrs. DeMoss’ approach was refreshing and biblical. Rather than rebuking one as a wicked sinner if you don’t dress exactly the way she would, she emphasized the need for modesty to be an attitude of the heart. When one has a love for God and for others, that will be reflected in the way one dresses. She is blunt but gentle and personable, and she gives some practical principles to think about when choosing clothing. I also appreciated the way she addressed some common questions/issues about modesty at the end of the book.
It really was a short read! but, despite that, it was clear and full of very important points to consider. A book that I recommend for any girl who is looking for guidance on this subject. My prayer is that I and the rest of my sisters in Christ seek to glorify Him not only in what we wear, but in our heart and our entire lives. We are His and FOR Him. ♡
In the sub-genre of "purity culture" which is the specific topic of "modesty." This book was given to me to evaluate, and while there were a number of good things to consider in the book, overall I can't recommend it. The book is trying to walk a fine line between the "heart" and the rules, and some of its explorations of the heart, desires, and motivations are worthwhile.
Negatives: - the book does not explore at all the fundamental issue of wealth and riches as it relates to clothing; I believe this is actually the fundamental issue in Paul's teaching on "modesty" in the New Testament - the book teaches young women that they are responsible for men's lust; cites an article titled "The Sin of Bathsheba" which originally appeared in "Patriarch.com, an online magazine for men" (27).
Books cited include: - Every Man's Battle (see Sheila Gregoire, The Great Sex Rescue, for how this book "confuses lust with pure predation" (88)); - it also passes on "some great questions" to consider from Carolyn Mahaney and her daughters Nicole Whitacre and Janelle Mahaney, all from Sovereign Grace Ministries (for the dark side of SGM, and their approach to "biblical manhood and womanhood," sexual abuse, and more, see Shannon Harris's new book The Woman They Wanted: Shattering the Illusion of the Good Christian Wife - DeMoss also cites __Christian Modesty and the Public Undressing of America__, published by Vision Forum (a patriarchal, white-supremacist, neo-confederate organization run by Douglas Phillips, now disgraced because of an "inappropriate relationship" with the family's nanny) - the booklet closes with quote from John MacArthur: "A woman should examine her motives and goals for the way she dresses... is it to call attention to herself and flaunt her beauty? Or worse, to attempt to lure men sexually? A woman who focuses on worshiping God will consider carefully how she is dressed, because her heart will dictate her wardrobe and appearance" (52)
In all the downsides (patriarchy, beauty-blaming, sources/affiliations) outweigh the slight positives in this book. I can't recommend it.
I learned much more than I expected to learn from this study. I expected to just read a bunch of facts about modesty that I already knew, but I also learned how what is girls wear can affect Godly men. Definitely makes me be more aware of what I wear.
Una mirada bíblica de lo que es la modestia y el recato. A Dios si le importa como nos vestimos, como lo hacemos muestra mucho nuestros valores y creencias
