How does healing fit into God's will, especially when God doesn't heal? Our hearts, our bodies, and our world are desperate for healing. We all experience brokenness, and we rightfully look to Jesus for restoration. But many Christians have been taught the lie that God will heal us if our faith is strong enough, and that he is punishing us when bad things happen. Growing up in one of the world's leading faith-healing dynasties, Costi Hinn witnessed the tragedy of people chasing after healing more than the Healer. In this book he provides biblical clarity to some of the most challenging questions of the Christian faith. Does grace guarantee healing? How do we catch ourselves from slipping into the trap of seeking God for what he can do for us and not for who he really is? Beginning with the vivid memory of the night he discovered his son's cancer diagnosis—Costi unpacks the layered feelings and questions we have about God and his healing power, and he provides practical principles for growing closer to Jesus. With gentle clarity and biblical wisdom, he explains how More than chasing after the Jesus we want, this hopeful and encouraging book will guide you to discovering the Jesus we truly need—and the true power and hope that comes from a genuine relationship with him.
Costi W. Hinn is a pastor and author who is passionate about equipping Christians to boldly live out the gospel of Jesus Christ. His stand for truth and refutation of the prosperity gospel have been featured on CNN and in Christianity Today and in numerous other publications. He is married to the love of his life, Christyne, and they have three children.
I bought this book as I was sitting with a loved one in the hospital. I desperately wanted healing for him. I knew that God doesn’t promise to heal. Still, I wanted someone to promise me that He would. So, part of me didn’t want, almost feared, reading a book that would remind me that He doesn’t. Part of me desperately wanted to know what greater things God had for us than healing. This book beautifully reminded me of all that God does promise. For that, it is worth reading, especially, if you have been, are about to, or are even right in the middle of trials. For it is a reminder that God is greater and more loving than we could ever understand. His plan is always better than what we wish. It will refocus you from your trials to God’s plan as revealed in His Word. Hinn reminds us just how much more there is to God’s relationship with each of us than being a wish-granting fairy-godmother. He reminds us of God’s love, wisdom, and plan for our sanctification. As part of all that, he focuses on God’s call to an other-centered life. Much of the latter part of this book is the practical application of that call. The only complaint I have to make is that it is so short. There isn’t time for the author to develop any thought with much depth. Still, I found it extremely comforting. For it points out the glorious hope that we are offered instead of mere health and wealth. I would strongly recommend it.
An encouraging book taking you through who God actually is through your suffering.
Costi Hinn not only teaches well through his book, but shares personal examples from his life and his friends lives of deep suffering and understanding it in light of who God is.
” If Jesus being your Savior isn’t enough for you, you are in serious, spiritual danger.”
I loved this book! Costi Hinn reminds me to trust God in suffering. His book focuses on the various aspects of God’s character (healer, peace, savior, hope, comfort, goodness, love, justice, and sovereignty). He continually points to the truth of scripture and also addresses various hang ups that can occur particularly if you are suffering.
This is also a great book for you to read if you aren’t facing a trial because the truth is we live in a broken world and if you aren’t now someday you likely will. He also shares ways to comfort and love on people who are hurting. This can be physical, mental, etc.
When I heard that Costi was coming out with this book I couldn’t wait to read it. He played a part in me walking away from the prosperity gospel (even though I didn’t even know I was in it). When I was in that I focused so much on God healing and receiving spiritual gifts. I believed God owed me healing because I was faithful to Him and many of the teachers I listened to taught me that it was God’s will to heal all of the time.
God is a healer but He is so much more and that is what this book walks you through and Costi shares his own testimony about his son.
So many good qoutes I highlighted throughout this book, here are a few:
Page 33, “We must be reminded that the Christian faith is not about feeling, it’s about knowing.”
Page 51, “If Jesus’ being your Savior isn’t enough for you, you are in serious, spiritual danger.”
Page 167, “Understanding that Jesus is more than a healer means understanding that he is deserving of your thanks no matter what you are facing.”
If those quotes got you thinking or even feeling a bit convicted this might be a great book for you!
This book is absolutely amazing. I highlighted so much of it because there was something in every chapter that hit me hard. It challenged me, opened my mind and heart, and settled me more in my situation.
The first book that actually said what I’ve been trying to tell those around me for years. That while God performs miracles, odds are I’m not one of them. It’s finding comfort in the suffering instead of everyone telling me to keep praying and asking for healing. That doesn’t help my situation at all. This book has finally agreed with me, and you bet I’m making those around me read it to understand better how I feel.
I cannot in good conscience give this book 5⭐️. And that pains me because it was so life-altering. However, this author chose to say He (as in God) with a lowercase h. Every time I saw it it completely distracted me and took me away from the actual content. Besides, it’s wrong. I know people do it today and even some Bibles have it too. But it is wrong and for that it gets bumped down.
A far simpler book than I was expecting, which is not a bad thing I suppose. For Costi’s audience, which is people suffering or who know people who are suffering, this will be very helpful. The theological concepts are fairly easy to grasp, and will be very comforting, I think, for those struggling to find meaning and purpose in times of difficulty. It was a bit basic in terms of theological depth, but for those seeking proper intellectual depth on these sorts of things, perhaps they are looking too deep into what is very simple truths. I didn’t find it anything particularly special, but it is a decent, quick read, and I definitely recommend it for those who need stabs of truth amid fear and discouragement that suffering brings.
Incredible read. Costi writes with such conviction and you can feel his adoration for the Lord through the words on the page. It was refreshing to hear more about why healing for our (sin) souls is more important than healing for our physical bodies.
I felt particularly encouraged and challenged by these quotes:
• “Sometimes God allows certain things or determines how long a circumstance will last so that he can showcase his infinite power and wisdom and reveal more of himself to us. We wouldn’t praise him for mercy if we weren’t aware of his wrath. We wouldn’t appreciate his love for sinners if we didn’t realise his hatred of sin. In the same way, we couldn’t begin to glorify him for his healing hand if we didn’t experience (or see) sickness.” • “Can God heal? Yes. But sometimes he will glorify himself through your suffering, your sickness, and even your death. This counterintuitive way of thinking is foreign into this world. No wonder Peter called unbelievers “foreigners” (Peter 2:11). We are a people called otherwordly perspective. We are different, even weird. just think of how countercultural it is to believe that God will use your story for his glory no matter what the outcome may be. This is the greatest honour in this life. Greater even than physical healing in this life.”
I know people who have harmed family/friends/etc by saying something like this to them… “God always heals when you ask and speak it into existence. Also you don’t have enough faith so give some money here and there and try to fix that or He won’t help you.”
That theology/thought process isn’t only hurtful for the one who believes it, but also for the people around them who have their own sufferings. Costi makes a lot of good points about these issues (supported by scripture) throughout the book.
A great read from someone formerly in the health-wealth-prosperity-gospel world. Costi writes passionately about what the Gospel us and isn’t, graciously writes about wrestling with suffering and a sovereign God, and what sovereignty truly means. Jesus is indeed more than a physical healer.
A great reminder of who Jesus is if you've known Him a while. A great introduction of you're learning who He is for the first time. Simple and straight forward, but not without depth. An easy read.
This book was such a great read. It can be so easy to pray and expect what you prayed to be answered quickly. I enjoyed Costi way of bringing us on a journey of remembering that God is SOOOO much more then a healer. And that is the Key! He is GOD and we aren’t. And what a wonderful thing that is! Enjoy😊
This was a very easy and light book to read. It would be great if you are fresh out of NAR or WOF. I had expectations for it to be more in depth and thorough. Hinn explain who Jesus is and not the “take away healer” too many congregations preach these days. I appreciated the writers focus on Jesus, who he is and that He is the only hope and comfort in hard times and suffering.
Wow this book was everything I hoped it would be. It answered so many questions and brought comfort to my soul. I shed many tears.
“God’s love is put on display in your life through Christ and through the life you now have in Christ. This means that God’s love for you is not fully known by you getting your healing, because he also loves those who do not get healed. It means that God’s love for you is not fully known by his giving you material things, because he also loves those who lack material things. It means that God’s love for you is not fully known by your living the American dream, because he also loves those living in third-world slums. God’s love is fully known through Christ.”
“God permits what he hates to accomplish what he loves.”
“He considers these awful—and often evil—things tragedies and He takes no delight in misery, but He is determined to steer them and use suffering for His own ends. No matter what trials you face in life, remember that nothing enters your life that has not first passed through God’s hands.”
“Remember what Job said to his wife when she demanded that he curse God and die? “He replied, ‘You are talking like a foolish woman. Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?’ In all this, Job did not sin in what he said” (Job 2:10). Complaining can come from many different things, but one of those things will be forgetfulness. Understanding that Jesus is more than a healer means understanding that he is deserving of your thanks no matter what you are facing. Whether or not the breakthrough comes, we accept both good from God and adversity—praying, rejoicing, and giving thanks in all circumstances (1 Thess. 5:16–18).”
“I have learned to kiss the wave that throws me against the Rock of Ages.” - C Spurgeon
“Above all, I would say pray for the glory of God. If you think of God glorifying himself in history and you say, where in all of history has God most glorified himself? He did it at the cross of Jesus Christ, and it wasn't by delivering Jesus from the cross, though he could have. Jesus said, "Don't you think I could call down from my Father ten legions of angels for my defense?" But he didn't do that. And yet that's where God is most glorified.”
“This was too much. "Betsie, there's no way even God can make me grateful for a flea." ‘“Give thanks in all circumstances," she quoted. "Fleas are part of this place where God has put us." So we gave thanks for the fleas.” Betsie and Corrie soon discovered that the fleas were the reason why no soldier and not even a supervisor would deign to enter Barracks 28. Because of the infestation of one of God's smallest creatures, Bible studies, worship, fellowship, and prayer could go on unhindered. In the midst of your sickness, pain, and uncertainty, perhaps there are fleas in your life that you can thank God for.”
“Sadly, in many churches today people are consistently sold the lie that Jesus' main goal is your perfect health, wealth, and happiness. It's not that those things are bad things, but they are not the main thing.”
“You can have all the miracles your heart desires, but without Jesus saving your soul, you will miss out on the greatest miracle of all. You can be healed of every disease, but like every single human being to ever live, you will eventually die (Heb 9:27). The plain fact is that you need healing for the sickness of sin more than anything. For what does it profit anyone if they gain the world yet lose their soul, or what does it profit anyone to be healed of disease, experience relational breakthroughs, and achieve professional success if they lose their soul (Mark 8:36)? The glory of heaven awaits those who put their faith in Jesus Christ alone. Your life on earth is but a grain of sand when compared with the endless shores of eternity.”
“So much so that we may even be tempted to dump Christianity altogether if it doesn't deliver the results we're seeking. This is precisely what the devil wants you to do. He cheers when you eye-roll messages about heaven. He longs for you to dismiss biblical truths that challenge your temporary perspective and to focus only on seeking out quick fixes and shallow pursuits. If he has his way, you'll go straight for quick-fix drugs, like the prosperity gospel, in your search for instant gratification-even if they don't deliver the long-term goods. As so many physical drugs are designed to do, this spiritual drug will fill you up for a moment with relief or euphoria, then send you crashing into despair, needing another hit. if Jesus' being your Savior isn't enough for you, you are in serious, spiritual danger.”
“The focus is not on isolated events in the believer’s life, but on the sum total of all events. Do you see the difference between saying “each thing by itself is good” and “all things work together for good”? Think about it. The difference is tremendous. The verse does not tell me I should say “it is good” if my leg gets broken, or my house burns down, or I am robbed and beaten, or my child dies. But it does say that God will use these events and weave them together with every other facet of my life in order to produce what He knows to be the very best for me.”
First sentence: As I was writing this book, events in the year 2020 unfolded rapidly: the pandemic, cultural upheaval, dramatic battles in the church, the American election. To say that it was a wild year is an understatement.
More Than A Healer is a fantastic read. I rarely check out books from the library and say I NEED to own that book, but, with this one I'm tempted. It is SO wonderful. Is it just about healing? No. It is a look at WHO Jesus has revealed himself to be in the Word of God. It is a close look at the Jesus who actually IS as opposed to the Jesus that we might imagine and reimagine in our heads. Sometimes imaginary Jesus makes his way into the pulpit as well. Imaginary Jesus definitely invades bookstores as well.
This is a good old-fashioned meet the real Jesus book. There are nine chapters.
He Is Healer He Is Peace He Is Savior He Is Hope He Is Comfort He Is Good He Is Love He Is Justice He Is Sovereign
Each book is PACKED with spiritual truth and insight and heavily saturated with the Word of God. And by that I mean it is written in light of Scripture and with close attention, dear reverence for Scripture. I do not mean cutting and pasting only. The Bible IS relevant whether people want to admit that or not. The Bible has truth--some of it comforting and reassuring, and some of it HARD and uncomfortable.
I think one of the important thing he stresses is that you should be meeting Jesus in the Word of God and not blindly accepting and following a second-third-fourth hand Jesus. Anyone can say "Jesus said..." or "Jesus says..." but that doesn't necessarily mean that they are getting Jesus right. OR interpreting his words, his meaning correctly. It is unfortunate that it's commonplace to read our own meanings into Scripture instead of studying what the Word actually meant and means.
I see this as a book to refer back to again and again.
I think my favorite chapter might just be He Is Peace. I love, love, love the Alistair Begg story he shares!
"But what if I told you that in our need for healing, we tend to overlook the healer? What if our version of Jesus is so shortsighted that we are missing much of who He is? What if no matter how desperate we are for healing, our need goes far beyond just the Jesus who heals our ailments? What if He offers so much more? Is there a purpose in pain? Is it possible we have must to learn while we wait on the Lord?" (p. xii)
I've been enjoying watching sermons from Costi Hinn, so I had to check out one of his books. I was encouraged by the rich theological truths on every page of this text. The chapters look at different roles Jesus embodies: healer, peace, savior, hope, comfort, goodness, love, justice, and sovereignty. While I didn't feel like there was a ton of new-to-me content, the message of this book is something all believers need to be reminded of on a regular basis. I highly recommend reading this, especially if you are facing a challenge that feels insurmountable.
The formatting of the text is very easy to follow, with headings to break down each section within the chapters and plenty of numbered lists to focus the writing. It was very clear that Hinn has written countless sermon outlines, and this is a great structure to compliment taking notes.
"Our goal in growing closer to the Healer is not to gain the healing. Our goal in growing closer to Jesus is to have more of Jesus Himself." (p. 169)
Format: Ebook, owned on Kindle Rating: 4.5 stars Book 18 of 2024
More Than a Healer is Costi Hinn’s answer to faith-healers and the rampant Prosperity Gospel. The basis of the book is that “Jesus can and does heal today. But that doesn’t mean He is obligated to do so” (quote from the book). He focuses on how we can find the comfort, hope, soul healing, and peace in Christ in our daily life while maintaining an eternal perspective based on our hope of heaven and the foundational promises of God in Scripture. Theologically sound and covering what I see as “the basics of suffering,” this book would be good for a new to intermediate believer. However, it wasn’t the deepest, most profound book I have read on suffering and probably not one I’m inclined to re-read. Do I regret reading it? Absolutely not. Would I pass it on to a friend who is suffering? Quite possibly. Is it my top recommendation for one who is suffering? Probably not.
Ultimately, this book is a great encouragement that, as Costi Hinn writes, “God is strong enough, wise enough, and powerful enough to bring purpose out of our pain, even if He doesn’t take US out of the pain right away.”
At the end of each chapter, there are some excellent questions for reflection, and I can definitely see value in thinking and journaling through them.
This book was totally unexpected. Because the author is Costi Hinn, I thought this might be an interesting dive into the prosperity gospel preached by his uncle, but it was so much more. It was inspiring, convicting, and challenging. This book delves into how to live in the peace of Christ whether we find healing on this side of heaven or not, regardless of what circumstances or troubles plague us. I couldn’t put it down and finished it in one day. I will probably revisit it again soon because there are many deep truths to ruminate on. My life has been heavy for the past few years and this book was a solid reminder of how we live in the victory of the cross even while we face trials. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. If you’re looking for peace from anxiety or truly trusting God or dealing with comfort eating, Costi covers it all and does so with eloquence and wit, heart and passion.
At the end of the book, Costi says “The sovereignty of God rightly understood does not invoke stoic intellectualism but rather heartfelt adoration of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.” This book I give 5 stars to for so many reasons. One it’s an easy read, Costi does a wonderful job at keeping you engaged and hoping to read what is on the next page. But also it touches on so many points that we need in todays world. With the prosperity gospel saying you need to give money for healing, or the “let go and let God” mentality, there is an ever increasing need to grow in the knowledge of WHO God is and not just what He does. And that will drive you close to Him. Trusting in Him through the good and the bad, when all seems hopeless, when all fails, it’s hard for some to sit there and say “God is good”. This book helps to put that into perspective. Give it a read.
This is an excellent book written in a brief, simple way that anyone can understand. It communicates truths of the scriptures that are essential to us all but that often get muddied in our current Christian culture, especially here in the south.
The truth is that Christ is a healer…but that means so much more than most of us realize. Christ heals our souls, hearts, minds and sometimes He heals our bodies. But everything He does is for His glory and our good. But how do we reconcile that when tragedy enters our life? This books uses scripture to address that question. Costi approaches this subject and the truth of Gods character with compassion, gentleness and simplicity that can be lacking in more academic books. This is a book you can read, understand and immediately apply to your life. Highly recommend.
I'm impressed by this book! Each chapter has something important. This book is comforting and encouraging.
What stands out is Costi Hinn's careful examination of harmful theology. He talks about the harmful idea that God only heals if we have enough faith or give enough money, and how it hurts people individually and as a group. Instead, he reminds us that miracles can happen, but healings are not guaranteed. God is good when He heals, and God is good when He doesn’t.
Throughout the book, Costi makes strong arguments supported by scripture, addressing different struggles and misunderstandings. He talks about God's many different qualities, like he is healer, peace, savior, hope, comfort, good, love, justice, and sovereign.
I really recommend this book, whether you're going through hard times or not. Costi's ideas will help and prepare you for life's difficulties. He also gives practical advice on supporting and caring for those who are suffering, including physical, mental, and emotional help.
In the end, Costi Hinn's book reminds me to trust God during hard times. His work is a powerful study of faith, scripture, and God's qualities, making it a must-read for anyone who wants a deeper understanding.
Before reading this book, I thought it was meant for people who were going through suffering and struggles. I wasn’t sure if I would glean too much from it - thankfully, I am not going through any major trials in my life right now. But boy was I wrong in my assumptions! This book is not just for those who are suffering. It offers wisdom and truth directly from the Bible no matter what your current circumstances are.
This book reiterated to me the truth that God is sovereign. No matter what trials we face, God will take us through them. I would recommend this book to anyone. Costi Hinn’s story is fascinating to me and his writing always points directly back to the truth of God’s Word.
This book was so encouraging. While it is geared towards those who are chronically, severely or terminally ill, I would say it’s equally as relevant towards those walking with sick loved ones. Also, just those suffering in a broader sense beyond illness: all of the hardships that come from living in a broken world.
The author does a wonderful job focusing on God’s character, instead of focusing on us the sufferers. I found that very refreshing, because we focus on ourselves more than enough. What we really need is to be reminded of who Jesus is in the midst of our suffering.
Costi spent years under his uncle Benny promoting the prosperity gospel. Eventually he came to the realization of who God really is. In this book, Costi Hinn gets readers beyond the transactional Jesus and goes into detail how Jesus does more than heal. Healing is certainly important, but there is more to the gospel than healing. Costi shows how Jesus satisfies our deepest needs and helps us through the difficulties of life.
Read through this slowly, but every chapter was convicting and inspiring. I found myself deeply reflective throughout this book. I love Costi Hinn's genuine passion for the gospel. I was drawn to this book initially in light of Mike Winger's devastating expose on Benny Hinn. Costi is so humble and sincere; hearing the true gospel in this book makes his uncle's promises of wealth and health seem even more shallow and empty. I look forward to more books from Costi in the future!
This is another great book by Costi Hinn. This book reminds us that everything God does is for his goodness, not ours. This is a good reminder that Christian’s need from time to time, especially when bad things seem to be happening to us. We need to remember not to think of God as just a healer, but a master planner.
Began reading this book because I’ve grieved the death of too many loved ones in 2021 and have many friends fighting cancer right now.
The book was encouraging and written from the authors own experience with cancer in a loved one. The final chapter in the book was the home run that made this book so very worth the read.
Fabulous read!!!! In a world of overwhelming popularity of the prosperity gospel, Costi Hinn does a phenomenal job of taking the reader through scripture, in context, and showing you how Jesus is SO MUCH MORE than a magic genie only here to grant your wishes in life. A must read for anyone who struggles with why God allows trials and tragedies to happen!!
If you have ever wanted to read a great theological book about healing that is grounded in scripture. This is it. Costi Hinn walks through scripture and shows how God shows up and why he sometimes doesn’t the way we want. Such a great read that we all need.
This is a MUST READ for anyone dealing with “Why didn’t GOD heal/do/bring back” questions.
