He’s your average, struggling LA model just trying to book his next gig. When John finds out the supernatural live among us, it's game on.
Sign twirling and rideshare driving while waiting for his next casting call soon take a back seat to hunting the supernatural for a pretty penny.
But not all is as straight forward as it may seem. There are those close to John who are more than they're letting on and that spells trouble for our reluctant hero, big trouble.
For fans of Larry Correia's Monster Hunters International, Jim Butcher's Dresden Files, and M.D. Massey's Junkyard Druid comes your next romp in the graveyard.
I'm Jonathan, a husband, father, and writer. I write because that's what I was born to do and I love doing it. Because of the support from awesome people like you, I get to do it full-time.
A schlub is at possibly the lowest point of his life. He has a really bad job, his fiance has left him, and his roommate is a vampire. He also has PTSD from bullying well into his twenties.
Then a girl moves into his apartment complex. It seems she is an amateur vampire slayer. This introduces our schlub into the supernatural, where, naturally, he is "chosen."
All by the numbers. The hero is a real whiner, and that got irritating.
I just couldn’t get into this. The narrator was off putting for me and I found the main guy kind of hopeless. Some of the dialogue was unappealing to me.
The staging was a little too convenient, and the hero? is a little more boy-next-door than I usually like but I got into the story and really liked it. It's pretty well put together and the humor turned what might have been a 3 star read into a solid 4 (maybe 4.5) star read. I'm definitely going to follow this series as it emerges.
I won this book through the Goodreads giveaway program. Other than some grammatical and spelling errors, the book is a fun read; that is, if you enjoy quirky fantasy reads.
It was a rough start but got better as the story moved along. I will continue since I'd like to see what happens next and who's going to find what and the battles as well
(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I change my mind on a series, so want to change my scoring by 0.50 or more of a star. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)
DNF
I liked the idea but I just couldn't get into the book.
I didn't mind the MC. I liked that he wasn't the typical lead for these sort of books.
First time read the author's work?: Yes
Will you be reading more?: No
Would you recommend?: No
------------ How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author) 4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author). 3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series) or 3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)
All of the above scores means I would recommend them! - 2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.) 1* = Disliked
Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)
A strange title for a fascinating comic novel, by Master of Mystery, Jonathan Yanez, The Suck is Book 1 in the Hunters for Hire series.
John 'Jonny' Hunter and Evan are flatmates and The Suck tells the hilarious tale of their lives and adventures, that seem to me to be a cross between Bill and Ted's Excellent adventure and a Carry On... comedy film.
Jonny's a struggling actor who proposes to his girlfriend Tracy and thinks life will be great from now on when she accepts his (cheap) ring. But later that night, Jonny learns something completely unexpected about Evan, that changes his outlook on life forever.
More revelations about other residents in their apartment block lead to comically confusing episodes, that will have you're aching for the tissue box (in a good way), as The Suck, by Jonathan Yanez races along and takes you on a wild comic adventure that will have you eagerly awaiting book 2. Make sure you get sucked(!) into Jonny and Evan's revelry of an existence by buying your copy today!
Mistakes: This book is dated. As in future generations won’t be able to understand the real people or the slang that was shoved into this book. Chasing an animal out from under a house doesn’t really do much. After it calms down it will return to what it considers its home. You need to actually relocate the animal.
Plot: A struggling actor/model learns his best friend and roommate is a vampire. Thus he is thrust into the world of the supernatural.
Characters: The MC is exactly what I imagine when I think of the stereotype of someone from California. A giant tool. ( Sorry to any normal non weirdo in California, if you really exist.) Lead female is interesting as she is tough and kickass with a sense of humor. The best friend is a vampire that of course is the only one that has a moral compass and doesn’t kill or turn his blood bags. So two of the three main characters made my head hurt.
John is your boy next door who has struggled with bullying in his youth. Now that he’s older, he’s a struggling actor/model. Let me tell you, his story as a adult is pretty hilarious. I don’t know how he finds himself into these situations but, I loved it. The plot was intriguing and his girlfriend, Tracy Coach Prada is something else. 🤣 YES!! That’s her name. LOL I really loved the secondary characters, Evan and Shannon. I loved Shannon. Shannon becomes John’s sidekick. She is a firecracker and comes out guns blazing. The narrator, Steven Barnett is a great narrator. He used a variety of voices and inflections that elevated the story. You could tell when certain characters were emotional bc you could hear/feel it in the voice. It was a great listen and I highly recommend it. Looking forward to listening to the next book.
John hunter may be a struggling male model, but he's also a big nerd who loves the Golden Girls, Star Wars, and that horrendous song Fight Song. He twirls signs in a stinky chicken suit, drives for Lifter, and goes on the occasional modeling job, just to have enough money to buy his girlfriend a dinky ring. When he accidentally finds out his roommate is a vampire, his world is rocked. All of the sudden, he's thrust into the world of supernaturals. What follows is a fun book, with a ton of humor and a lot of action, while Jon learns how to be a hunter of vampires. I loved Jon. He's human and has many faults, but he laughs, and he's intensely loyal, totally corny, and just a bit gullible. Just plain loveable!

Former bullied fat kid, Jonny, turned model/actor in Hollywood works spinning a sign at "Tacos Culos Locos" in-between casting calls where he usually only gets parts in commercials for hemorrhoids or erectile dysfunction. His life goes from boring to filled with excitement in a series of events that reveal a side of himself and his neighbors that he never knew existed.
I really like Jonny and his friends and the adventures that they now have themselves entangled in. "The Suck" is appropriately cheesy and interesting simultaneously with the possibility of a little romance in the future books. If you're a fan of Sam and Dean, or Buffy, then I think you'll enjoy this read.
Nothing happens for almost 30% of the book, then we get to see a bunch of stuff we already saw coming in the first few pages. The mix of predictability and the overdrawn dialogue that tries too often to be funny, plus an excess of pop-culture references made this get really tiresome to read. Reading about how he made an hemorrhoids commercial was entertaining the first time, but there's no need to repeat the joke another twenty times; we got it already.
And if you are placing the MC in a relationship that's obviously meant to fail, have it happen sooner, we all know it's going to happen anyway, and it's a good setup so that the real story can begin right away.
After half hour, John (MC) is both predicable and stupid. It makes me cringe just to read about him. It's like he's the kind of guy who thinks mixing a lot of cologne and Axe Body Spray is a good idea.
Oh. Wait. He is.
If I am going to spend HOURS with an MC he or she had BETTER have some trait about them that I like. Something that doesn't scream 'pathetic loser'. Some spark of something. If the MC isn't someone you'd want to have a drink with, why would you want to spend fifty hours listening to their stories?
I'll try listening to a little more of the book (the first in a series? Fucking how??) but it is mostly out of a sense of schadenfreude.
When You Need a Little Break from Reality Geez, monster hunter books can be so much fun when the main characters don't take themselves too seriously. Welcome, John Hunter- an affable, just-waiting-for-my-break kinda' guy. He works hard, pays his bills, appreciates loyalty, and is really broke. So when he's offered a chance to do something insane for a good payday, well- you can't blame him for going for it. The secondary characters here are a total stitch as well, and all develop nicely along with the story line.
If you liked Monster Hunters International, and enjoy well-written thrillers with a great sense of humor, you'll want to grab this one.
It seemed like the author couldn’t decide what hat he really wanted to write. Was it a parody or an authentic offering into the urban fantasy genre? If he had stuck with either premise it could have been good. As it sits it’s a poor parody and a poor urban fantasy. The main character is weak and uninteresting. The fat kid who turns into a model/monster hunter was a good idea. It was poorly executed.
So good! This book was a lot of fun. ❤️ This story is intriguing. I laughed so much too. It was fun listening to the audiobook. The narrator is amazing. I love Johnny. He's hilarious! I loved all the action and adventure! It was nice that there was no swearing or spicy parts and I was able to listen to it out loud at work without worrying.
This is really good the mc is likeable the side characters are great there is humor 😀 and it's interesting. Only thing I hate is the mc foolishness about tracy 😒 he is to soft and the biggest nerd 🤔 and is so indecisive people keep getting hurt because he can't follow through and get the job done. And keeps trying to talk to the enemy or letting them go
So this fluezy needed to be put down with all of the hurt she gave Hunter. He was no stranger to the paranormal world, but his counterpart isn't so forgiven, and she is out to hunt and kill the man who killed her sister. Ironically, even though Hunter is not the best for the job, he surprises pulls some great hurdles.
I struggled to get into this until about halfway. I had no empathy for the main character, he kind of felt like a little bit of a moron. However, the book definitely improved past the halfway point, and the additional characters that got added in definitely helped the story. I'm interested enough now to pick up the next one to see what happens next.
I will give this book a 4/5. I enjoyed the story and the characters. John Hunter is a human man who needs a job. He finds out he can make some serious money for hunting the things that go bump in the night. John will be even more shocked when he learns that his close friends have secrets of their own. I will read more in this series.
Not a lot of comedy but definitely light hearted. Actor turned monster hunter that has an interesting assortment of allies. Nothing particularly new but a reasonably developed story and characters.
Jonathan Yanez has done it again. Climb aboard for an exciting and wild ride. There were times I wanted to laugh, times I wanted to cry and a time or two I wanted to take a baseball bat along side a character's.head. Great reading. Waiting on book 2.
70% of the time the protagonist is getting beat up 20% he is crying about being bullied 10% actually showing any confidence. Not sure why the high ratings, same format for second book as well. Probably will not by 3rd book.
I was recommended this author from well...a lot of people. I’m so glad that I listened and read this book! It’s fun, adventurous and full of the unexpected. I’ll never look at a chicken costume the same.
Fun adventure! This book was fast paced and extremely exciting. There were so many funny lines, I loved it!mThe characters were very well created. Yanez causes the reader to feel empathy for them. I'm off to download the next in the 4 book series now!
A story that are related to or remind you of many other stories. Quite ingenious. I will not give anything away, with the exception of I really like the humor. Moving right along to the next book.
There's new monster hunters in town and they mean business... Some humor ... some action ..and a fresh storyline .. Although it reminds me of "Supernatural" it feels fresh ... and Jonny is very likable too
I really liked the book. At first John grated on me, until I read his past. I loved the idea of the book and was entertained from start to finish, looking forward to the next one.
I had to try reading this three times before I could really get into the plot. John Hunter comes off as a pitiable individual and I found it hard to engage. I’m glad I kept trying.
If you're looking for a fun read reminiscent of the '80s and '90s campy and cliched B-movies, this is the one for you. I smiled and laughed throughout this read, and it was a good way to brighten up my day.
