The Shendri Series #2

The Searching Songbird

Rate this book
"Your only fault was placing your trust in someone as unworthy as me."

Lily Delaney is on a mission to save one of her sister Shendri. The only problem is she doesn't actually know who she is. Or where she is, for that matter. All she has to go on is a vision she saw in her dreams. That, and the help of her celestial beast, Suzaku. Will determination be enough to save the unknown Shendri from harm? Or will Lily find herself in more trouble than she can handle?

Draven Grant gets things done. When the boss gives him a job to do, he does it, no questions asked. That is, until the boss tasks him with the unsavory job of stealing an innocent young woman away from her family. A job that becomes even more complicated when she decides to sail to another kingdom. Will he be able to maintain his professional indifference as they drift off to sea together? Or will the appeal of a certain, golden-haired passenger place him in an impossible situation?

Treachery, love, and dragons await as Lily and Draven wind their way through this heart-pounding, second installment of E.P. Stavs' The Shendri Series.

I loved book one of the SHENDRI series and was eager to dive into book two. Lily, the second of the Shendri, whose warrior animal that emerges from her skin is a phoenix, has been having dreams/visions of one of the missing shendri—a redheaded girl whose warrior animal is a dragon. Lily and Jocelyn agree she needs to seek her out, and Lily embarks on a journey to afar off city to find her. Only problem? Lily has someone following her—Draven, whose motivations become clearer with time. I liked the scenes on the ship especially, as well as Lily singing and dancing (such a theatre kid, that one!) I loved the way this one ramped up as we reached the end

I am extremely late in writing this review and had to go back and reread the book
But The Searching Songbird is a fantastic second book in E.P. Stavs Shendri Series and hits the same tone and marks set by her debit novel The Marked Princess.

Her settings and characters wrap you up in their story and brave Lilly truly comes into her own in this story. Your attention never strays in this book; Stav keeps you enthralled.
Enter a dragon...who doesn't love dragons. E.P. Stavs crafts a world that, while mythical it reaches out and grabs you. Stav is an excellent craftsman in hitting the perfect balance between adventure, romance and intrigue.

I had great fun reading The Marked Princess, book 1 in this series. Stav’s writing lightens my mood and The Searching Songbird was no exception. The author plays with stereotypes and then subverts them in very satisfying ways, and I ended up feeling a little sheepish for having stereotypical expectations in the first place. But that is the fun of reading! Strong women and their “inner strength“ are the hallmark of this series and it is gratifying to read—not in a Cersei Lannister kind of way, but more like later-GOT Sansa or Arya Stark… young women discovering their power and resolve and taking action for good. Great read for YA fantasy lovers.

E.P. Stavs is a writer that everyone ought to become familiar with. Her stories are captivating and fun to read, and once you've begun your journey into one of her books you won't want to put it down. The Searching Songbird is the second in her Shendri series, and I must admit I enjoyed this one even more than the first book, The Marked Princess. The characters and scenery are cleverly drawn out and I could picture the story in my head as if watching a movie. I really loved Lily's character and Draven... well, you'll just have to read the book to find out about him. The book ends as I imagine the third book in the series will begin, on to another character and member of the Shendri clan, which I am very much looking forward to reading!

Some of my favorite lines from the book:

"...he attempted to loosen his tongue, which suddenly seemed too heavy for his mouth."

"The breath left her lungs, ripping the song from her lips as she felt the earth threaten to give way beneath her feet."

"Icy tendrils inched up Lily's arms, and she shivered."

"The entire left side of his body was covered in angry, red burns, giving him a rather gruesome visage."

I loved being back in this world and following along with Lily as she searches for the dragon Shendri. Lily is so relatable in a way that she is not a fierce warrior like she believes she should be. She doesn’t know how to fight, but she has a warrior spirit that stands up against wrongs and longs to defend others. I so enjoyed her story and can’t wait to dive in to book 3 in this amazing series.

Book Two in the Shendri series is an excellent continuation of The Marked Princess! The Searching Songbird starts out with a dream, one that launches a quest and daring adventure. This story focuses on Lily and her need to uncover the meaning behind that dream. Although this book certainly has its share of action, there's also the spirit of adventure on every page. To me, these two elements are distinct. Action propels the plot forward, but the energy of the book, for lack of a better word, is something else. I was excited to begin chapter after chapter.

On another note, I love the world building in this series. The author created a distinct world, but there are things familiar to this: breakfast food, for example. Little touches such as this made me envision the characters as part of this world, too. It made them feel familiar.

Fans of YA fantasy, high fantasy, and romance will enjoy this series immensely.

How...how did I not leave a review on this? Bad me. Bad!

This book takes everything great about Book One and expands on it! We have an awesome MC who has a wonderful past (in terms of storytelling---poor girl) and I love seeing how she grows and forms her own future. Plus, the romance is so well done.

I love how the book does exactly what a next book in a series should do: expand and build while also9 maintaining its own plot and narrative. It's a hard balance to achieve but I think the book does wonderful at it...while also setting us up for book 3!

Definitely, if you haven't read this series, do it.

The Searching Songbird, while focusing upon a different Shendri sister, Lily, has all the of the excitement, suspense, and romance of The Marked Princess! There is not a dull moment in this adventure that takes Lily to a distant land to save a third Shendri sister. Lily makes friends along the way and faces a number of threats. The last chapter is a peak at what is in store for Book 3, and it sounds no less enticing! The Shendri Series is a fabulous fantasy read!

Loved, loved this book! I really enjoyed reading about sweet, brave Lily and how she sets off on a quest to save one of her Shendri sisters. This story has pirates and magic, and Draven, the love interest, is wonderfully written. Stavs's writing always flows so nicely, it's a pleasure to read, and you can't put the book down once you start.
The first book was great but I think this one was even better.

Let me just start off by saying that I am so glad this is a series! I read the first book in The Shendri Series, The Masked Princess, and loved it so I bought The Searching Songbird with very high hopes. Stavs did not disappoint!!

As always, the writing style is absolutely amazing, the characters are lovable, and the plot had me turning page after page. It's not often I finish a book in 4 days, but I could not put this one down. Every free moment was spent with Lily and Draven.

Thank goodness the third book comes out in March! I will be buying it as soon as it is available for preorder! If you like fantasy with strong female leads and romance subplots, this is for you. The chemistry between Lily and Draven was instant and I know you will love them as much as I do!

The Searching Songbird is the second of E.P. Stavs YA series and I have to start off by saying if you were a fan of book one you will like book two. The characters are likable and the writing is well done. This is how a YA Fantasy book should be written. I downloaded the third book after reading this one to add to my read list. It will be a while, but it will be interesting to see how well book three holds to the series. This book is well edited and worth the read.

I was eagerly awaiting the publication of this, the second book in E. P. Stavs series, and it did not disappoint! It was a delight to get to know Lily's character more, and she led us on another exciting and emotional journey of danger and intrigue. E. P. Stavs creates characters with depth, who are real and raw, and who you can't help rooting for. I will be recommending this series to all of my friends, and I can't wait to get my hands on the next book! Please don't leave us waiting for too long! :)

Another Great Book by E.P. Stavs!

This book hooked me early and kept me engaged and wanting more to the very end. It is a great tale of adventure and romance with a deeply compassionate heroine.

It is beautifully written and perfectly concise. I'm so excited to experience the rest of the story unfold in the next two books!

What can I say about the second installment of The Shendri series? An easy sequel to lose yourself in with wonderful character development. The writing flows, adventure beckons and love blossoms on the horizon. Naturally, in fantasy, nothing ever goes quite to plan and as a reader, you're left satisfied with the journey, but needing more. Bravo, E.P. Stavs! A great book, well worth a read.

So first of all, it is exceedingly rare to have a sequel be better, or even just as good as the first in anything, be it a book, movie or TV show. Stavs pulls it off though, building upon an already rich story and world, and making it that much better with Searching Songbird.

Again, the pacing is on point. Stavs does such a wonderful job at pacing in her books, wrapping you right up into the setting, and what to expect, all while stringing you along on a journey full of wonder and conspiracy. It's a story that demands your attention, and clutches it tight from start to finish.

And hey, the book starts off with a Dragon, what else do you need to further entice you?

What I personally enjoyed the most though in this book, is the focus. The focus of The Searching Songbird seemed even tighter and more honed in. Everything fit well, and there wasn't any fat on the bone, so to speak. The stakes felt high, and every part of Lily's journey felt important.

Speaking of Lily, I loved going along with her on her journey as the focus character this time around. She was an instant favorite in the first book, so I was glad to see, and learn so much more about her. Oh, and Suzu is always a refreshing voice when they cut in to help out!

Along the way, we meet Draven, a cavalier character who captured my heart upon meeting him. He's such a great addition to the series, and the contrast in personalities between him and Lily really plays so well on the page. Their tension and friction makes for a really nice enemies-to-loves scenario.

Overall, the plot of this book continues to build, and set up the third book very nicely, all while being able to stand on its own as a high quality title. Continuing from the revelations and events from book 1, the stakes, and reveals in book 2 only increase heading into book 3.

All in all, this is an easy recommendation to anyone who has any interest in a YA fantasy/romance story. The characters are well crafted, the plot feel weighty and well paced, and as a reader of the first book, I feel sufficiently rewarded in the 2nd.

Book 2 in the Shendri series doesn’t disappoint with this exciting, touching, and imaginative installment. In my opinion, this sequel to the Marked Princess takes the elements readers loved from the first book and expounds on them, creating an even more enthralling story and characters you can’t help but love.

Lily is a character that proves there is great power in kindness and compassion. In the first book, I wasn’t sure what to make of this meek songbird, but through her journey, she grew into a woman of strength and determination who shows that being a hero isn’t all about epic battles and fights to the death: Heroes simply try to do what is right even when they’re scared. By the end, Lily had a piece of my heart.

The other piece belongs firmly to Draven, her love interest. Rough around the edges, Draven is the bad-boy with a heart of gold, and the tension and romance he brings to the tale are sure to make hearts flutter.

With a greater introduction to the series’ villain, more magic, adventure, and intrigue, The Searching Songbird is a book that’s hard to put down, and I can’t wait to dive into book 3. I definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a fun, romantic, fast-paced fantasy.

It ain’t every day one has a phoenix bursting out of their body.

Unless you’re Lily “Songbird” Delaney.

As a Shendri warrior with a celestial beast (a phoenix) hitching an indefinite ride inside her, Lily is no ordinary gal. When her Shendri sister, the mighty dragon, is in trouble, Lily sets off on a whirlwind of a mission to help her. (Un)lucky for her, she doesn’t need to cross the seas without a (un)trusty companion shadowing her tracks. Draven “The Beard” Grant is hot on her heels with a mission of his own.

Others have said it, and I agree. This one’s even better than the first!

The Searching Songbird takes you on an adventure with Lily and Draven, two very likeable characters, and sets you not just on the front seat but right in the middle of the fantasy world where you can join in the fun with our loveable duo!

Expect witty dialogue, heart-warming and grin-inducing scenes (sprinkled with serious, quite heart-breaking ones) and a beard that might just win an Oscar.

Fans of YA fantasy romance (and y’know, great books), this one’s a good’un.

Once again, E.P. Stavs has finely-crafted a masterful story, filled with drama, deceit, action and romance. The second book in the Shendri series, it follows Lily as she attempts to find the sister she never knew, all the while being tailed by the shadowy mercenary, Draven.

Awesome action scenes, a new, tense romantic dilemma, excellent use of world-building with all sorts of new characters and areas to experience, hateable villains and lovable heroes and a healthy amount of moral questions and terror make for a story that keeps people reading page after page after page.

Without spoiling anything, to my amazement, the ending sets up the next book so brilliantly that one of my only criticisms was made pointless. I am truly stunned with how good this book is, and I can't wait to read the next one!

A Fantasy-Romance Adventure!

In the second book of The Sendri Series, Stavs’ gives readers a great follow-up to her debut novel. Haunted by dreams of another woman’s suffering, Lily, one of the four Shedri warriors, comes into her own in this novel. Lily is portrayed as a courageous and idealistic heroine, who sets out on a quest to find and save the woman in her dreams.

She is joined by Draven, a complex hero who must find the courage to overcome his tragic past, in order to gain both Lily’s trust, and heart. Their adventure is a fun tale filled with of devious villains, interesting side-characters, and above all, two people finding love in the mostly unlikely of pairings.

I would recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys young adult fantasy with a dash of romance, and I look forward to continuing the series!

E.P. Stavs has created a young adult fantasy adventure world with just the right mix of magic and romance that packs a punch. Following after the events of "The Marked Princess," this second installment of the Shendri Warrior series features Lily, who was introduced in the first novel but comes into her own here, along with her inner phoenix, Suzu. Fast paced and unpredictable, "The Searching Songbird" takes us on a journey across the sea, into new dangers and against new foes, while further developing the Shendri mythos. Stavs' world is the perfect blend of believable realism with fantastical elements, which makes her characters vulnerable, relatable, and empathetic. Cannot wait for the third book!

I thought The Marked Princess was great, but The Searching Songbird is even better! We’ve got a heroine with an intriguing past (Lily, who you’ll remember from the first book), a hero with big secrets and major trauma in his past, and a truly despicable villain.

I love when books in the series tell the whole story but still leave lots of loose ends from the bigger, series-length story. This book does that well. I’m really looking forward to the third book coming out in March, especially because we already know one of the main characters, and it’s someone I really like!

Lily Delany, one of the Shendri sisters who has an ancient beast residing within her, gets visions of another Shendri sister in danger. Desperate to find this stranger, she crosses the sea and enlists the help of Draven Grant. Unfortunately, she doesn't know Draven Grant has a job to do - one that means she couldn't possibly trust him.

This is the sequel of E.P Stavs' first novel of this series, The Marked Princess. A fast past and well-written fantasy novel with friendship love and difficult choices to be made. Contains some mild/medium swearing.

This is the second in the series from E.P. Stavs and it really did not disappoint. Lily was a wonderfully balanced character with hidden depths and a real female inspiration. The story itself was exciting, fast-paced and left me unable to put the book down. The author has a wonderful balance of mystery, action, suspense and romance. I love the concept of the series and I cannot wait for the third book to be released!

A wonderful sequel to "The Marked Princess." I loved Lily in the first book and it was a treat to get to follow her own journey. The dual POV is used masterfully here and both main characters grow so much over the story. And dang is the ending gripping!

This was a great follow-up to The Marked Princess. Lily had played enough of a role in the first book of the series that I was more than happy for her to take centre stage in this second instalment. I was eager to see how her relationship with Draven would develop and really enjoyed their interactions together. Stavs has also cleverly laid the ground for the continuation of the series into Book 3. Nicely done!

Author E.P. Stavs has done it again. The Searching Songbird, book two in Stavs’ Shendri Series, is absolutely delightful. It felt like laying in a hammock on a late spring afternoon and falling into a fantasy dream. What a pleasure it is being whisked into this world again. I adored book one in the series, The Marked Princess, and I could not imagine how a story in this universe could be better. But Stavs did it. The Searching Songbird is an enthralling tale that enraptured me from page one and didn’t let go, not even after the end.

To begin, the story opens with a dragon and I knew this was going to be good. From that point on, Stavs continues to weave a tale of mystery, adventure, magic, and love. One highlight for me was the love story. A burgeoning and unexpected romance between protagonist Lily Delaney and the man sent to abduct her, Draven Grant. Stavs crafted this enemies-to-lovers dynamic so well. It’s unexpected: Lily is so light and Draven is so dark, yet they are drawn together and so was I, every step of the way with them.

The ending of the book felt just slightly rushed to me. Maybe I just didn’t want it to be over. Having said that, Stavs sets us up nicely for the next book, which I am happily anticipating now.

Overall, this is a fantastic story by Stavs. Her writing is masterful and this story, like the last one, flowed like silk. Her characters are so clear and interesting. It is yet another story by Stavs that I could not put down. I highly recommend this book and anything by author E.P. Stavs.

Just as amazing as the first installment in the series, and just as addictive! Maybe a bit more, because I know more!
I loved the alternating chapters from Lily's and Draven's points of view, and the gradual progression to romance. I keep thinking about the characters, which is always nice after finishing a book. And that ending left me so intrigued and excited for book 3!
A great read!

The Searching Songbird is an amazing second book to the Shendri series!

Featuring Lily this time around, we follow the Shendri warrior as she embarks for a new city in search of a fellow sister. Filled with Stavs impeccably ability to weave romance, adventure, and excitement together, this story was almost impossible to put down.

I loved every moment of this tale. This series needs to be the next big thing in YA fantasy and I can’t wait for the release of the next book!

Okay, so first of all, I'm SO stoked book 3 is about Edmund. He is one of my favorites, and I am just SO EXCITED!

Secondly, I'm not going to lie, I liked Joss more than Lily (no offense to Lily, I just love Joss, and I play favorites. Sorry not sorry)... BUT by about 30% I was INVESTED Draven and Lily. They were so adorable, I just want more of them! I also really enjoyed Suzu's voice in this one, and getting to see Suzu and Lily's different strengths in this entirely new story was a lot of fun.

Overall, I love EP Stavs' writing style. It flows so effortlessly with so much character, that once I actually get a chance to sit down and read, I'm reading to the end and there's nothing stopping me.

Sorry, this review is all over the place, as I come down from my book high, but let's end with this. I enjoyed The Marked Princess, but The Searching Songbird has really sold me on the series. I've preordered the next book, and I'm whole-heartedly looking forward to it

Five enthusiastic stars. If you're a YA Fantasy fan in your life with a love of romance subplots, this series is FOR YOU.
