The Girl Who Sees Angels

Rate this book
SOPHIE RAMOS has always had visions—perceptions of beings others don’t see. Even her mother doubted her as a child. Psychiatrists doubted her too. Psychics tried to recruit her to enrich and empower themselves. Now she’s thirty-two, living on her own, and sharing her secret only with her mother and a few friends.
A threatening specter begins to visit her at night, and more than her sleep is at stake. She follows a friend’s recommendation to visit Detta Washington, a church lady who believes that Sophie does see angels and demons. Even if Sophie is skeptical about the labels Detta uses for what she sees, she comes to respect Detta and finds ways to use her gift to help others.
When she helps free Detta from an incurable disease and releases two of her friends from creepy creatures shadowing them, Sophie starts to embrace her identity. But she still needs help with the ghoul that hovers above her bed at night. And that’s not the last enemy who threatens her in the dark.
Anthony, Detta’s handsome son, helps Sophie understand his mother’s religious language, and he becomes convinced that Sophie is for real. After years of doubt and frequent commitments to mental hospitals, Sophie’s mother comes to trust her daughter’s visions as well.
Recovering from a life of being condemned as a crazy person, Sophie finds new confidence. She is gifted. She is the girl who sees angels.

As a small boy in Lincoln, Nebraska, I listened enrapt to my grandmother reading me children’s stories, such as The Little Engine That Could. I also recall the elementary school librarian who read us Winnie the Pooh, imitating all the voices. And I remember the first summer I was allowed to ride my bike to the library on my own.

Writing started for me in school. Teachers encouraged me to pursue what they perceived as a gift. For me, my imagination was a challenge as much as a gift. I found the real world so much less enthralling.

In my Christian high school, the English teacher supplied me with unassigned novels. I wrote the senior class play and served as editor of both the yearbook and the school newspaper.

At Houghton College, I majored in writing, including coursework in poetry and fiction. But I also majored in biblical studies and was persuaded to take my writing skills in a more “respectable” direction—academia and nonfiction writing. Remember that less enthralling real world?

When all my academic work led to no great employment breakthrough, I hopped from there onto that rapid conveyor known as the tech industry. Starting in the 1990s, I shaped a new career, eventually starting my own computer consulting firm.

During those years, I focused on raising two boys and cherished the role of doing the bedtime reading, including attempting all the voices in The Chronicles of Narnia series. I also composed a few stories from scratch for my attentive little audience, usually around a campfire.

I started writing again in 2006. Following a friend’s suggestion, I meditated on scripture by imaging myself present on a day when Jesus healed an entire multitude. That meditation turned into my first novel, And He Healed Them All. Closing the gap between the sparse descriptions in the Gospels and what must have been a rich miraculous experience enticed me.

A series of unusual events (ask me someday) prodded me to write my second novel, The Reign: Out of Tribulation. I began self-publishing with those first two books. My third novel, Seeing Jesus, expanded into a series when numerous readers begged me for more. As it turns out, that kind of begging is hard to resist.

In all, I have published fifteen books on Amazon, fourteen of them as installments in one of my series. I am constantly working to improve my skills and to better share my message with the reading public.

Anyone tracking my address could guess that I’ve had some setbacks in my life. But God has stayed the same, even as I evolve and have to start over again.

Now I am married and living in Vernon Hills, Illinois, attending a vibrant church and meeting new people. I work part-time on my computer consulting business, and I devote much of the rest of my time to writing and marketing my books, with my wife as my highly motivated marketing director.

The Girl Who Sees Angels is a modern day This Present Darkness which came out over 30 years ago. Peretti’s book shed light on the dark spiritual warfare that was well hidden at that time.

Jeffery McClain Jones has masterfully highlighted the battle surrounding us. In my opinion he does the church a service by reminding us of the supernatural forces which are actually at work in our world and which many of us have done out best to forget in this "modern" era.

“There are no civilians in the world. We are all fighting on one side or the other. Some are just aware of it and others are not”

This involved several behind the scenes battles between angels and demons, taking place invisibly while Earthly struggles are taking place contiguously. Sophie Ramos has been given the gift of seeing both demons and angels. The gift felt more like a curse and she spent most of her young life trying not to see them and having others think she is mentally unstable. Sophie is sent to the “church lady” who understands the gift, helps interpret what she is seeing, and trains her to use the gift for good.

If you are a Christian who believes that the Bible is the word of God, then believing in demons intellectually is easy. Believing in their physical presence in the world is harder. If you have been trained in logic, skepticism, science and a general dismissing of superstition, believing in the physical presence of demons in this world is even harder. In this novel the reader is faced with demons and angels and their existence, war and power in the physical world. A well written and needed read.

This book is a bit different from my typical reads. It poses an interesting question: What if you knew monsters existed?

This book explores spiritual warfare in relation to angels and demons, as witnessed through Sophie. Can she get others to believe what she sees in her visions? Sophie is the recipient of a gift that terrifies her and feels more like a curse than a blessing. She slowly connects with others who believe and support her.

It was a bit hard for me to stay engaged and connect with the characters. I liked Detta the best, and I wish there had been more of her. The content could be upsetting to some readers who are unfamiliar with spiritual warfare. This book is the first in a new series.

Oh my, what a great book!! I just finished and realized that I was smiling almost the whole time I was reading. The Girl Who Sees Angels was good for my soul! I loved it and didn't want it to end! Can't wait for the next one! I loved the characters and want to hear more of their stories.

I think this has gone to the top of my list of favourite Jeffrey McClain Jones novels.
The story centres around Sophie Ramos, who grew up seeing spirit brings and was treated as mentally ill because of it. But as an adult, she is introduced to Detta, who recognises the gift in her and helps her to control it. It's an imaginative look into the unseen realms, and who knows? It could possibly be like that! I loved the character of Detta. I wish I had a Detta in my life, but I also hope I could be a Detta to someone else.
Can't wait for the next installment.

I loved this book! Someone who thinks she has gone crazy learns that she is actually blessed to be seeing angels... both good and bad. See how she is blessed and sometimes feels cursed because of this anointing.

Messengers from Heaven

5stars is my rating. The story of a young lady who goes from not knowing her purpose in life, suffering she believes. Seeing Angels and evil spirits. Tormented as a child, misunderstood; but God had a plan for her life . If she is willing, to accept Him with unwavering faith. The journey would be a roller coaster ride, but the reward would be endless joy. I can't wait for the sequels to this story. Great job Jeffery McClain Jones!

I loved this book. What would you do if you were given a gift that turned out to be more of a curse than a gift? A gift that you didn’t receive any training on how to use. You don’t really understand the gift. People are telling you that you are crazy because of what you are experiencing/seeing. This is Sophie’s story. She is given a gift that has up until this point has caused nothing but heartache in her life. Things begin to change when she meets Detta. Detta mentors Sophie and helps her to see her gift in a new light. The story of how Sophie begins to see angels and understand her gift is so captivating. I so enjoyed following Sophie’s journey as she learns to embracing her gift. I highly recommend this book.

I have read other books by Jeffrey and following him to find other books! This one jump out at me and so glad I read it. Must have been frightening as a child to see spirits but finally found the help she needed. Healing transformations are real and so glad for the inclusion in this story. Thanks Jeffrey!

WOW!

The fascinating story of a young woman who can see the spiritual world, the spiritual battle, that rages around us.

I am excited to find out what God has in store for Sophie going forward: how He will guide her to use her gift to help people and to further His kingdom.

Sophie has always seen strange creatures everywhere she goes. Due to this she's been in psychiatric care on several occasions.

Her circumstances change when she's told that actually she's seeing supernatural beings and needs to interact with God.

I found this book very disturbing and unsettling. The idea that evil beings are all around us is an uncomfortable one for me.

I didn't warm to many of the characters apart from Anthony whose mum Detta works with Sophie to find out the truth behind her visions.

This is part one of a trilogy.

Awesome

Finally, someone who understands!!! Yes, it is real. A great story about the realm we all live in but seldom see as clear as this. A really great read, in my opinion. I am biased though, being aware of what it covers.

This is the kind of book I love to read. Imagine all the things that go on around us that we do not see. I would love to see that. Meeting Detta was the best thing that happened to Sophie. My biggest problem is waiting for the other books to come out. Loved this book.

Very uplifting

Wow, what a wonderfully uplifting book. Sophie sees Angels and Demons. She has quite a fight on her hands with her faith and the whole good versus evil thing. She has help from a number of religious friends too. I really enjoyed reading this book.

Fascinating and imaginative look at what the unseen battlefield of spiritual warfare might look like! Sophie's "gift" is both frightening and exciting. I loved the supporting characters who accepted Sophie and helped to guide her to the Truth.

I love this author. His main characters are flawed but you root for them and care about their story.

Even though they are fiction, they still inspire lots of hope as well. I always feel really good after having read his books.

I see this is “book one” so I’ll definitely be on the lookout for the next chapter of this series to see where Sophie goes with her gift, and beyond.

With any Christian book, regardless of it being fiction, there are essential doctrinal truths that should always be adhered to which I think this book takes too many liberties on.

Firstly, no one can see the face of Jesus, even in vision or dreams. No one would survive it. They may see Jesus Christ’s outline or parts of Him, but never His face, especially in His glorified body which is the body He has now. John, in the Spirit, saw a vision of Jesus in His glorified form, but only to write the letters to the seven churches and John fell down almost dead. Paul as Saul only saw a light. Peter, John and Paul saw a light as bright as the sun in place of Jesus’ face, but no distinguishable features. [Rev. 1; Acts 9; Mt. 17:2; Lk. 9:29]

Secondly, a person can’t cast out a demon if they’re not a believer, and some demons can’t be cast out unless a person fasts beforehand to prepare. [Mk. 16:17; Mk. 9:29; Mt. 17:21]

Lastly, a person has no authority over angels, so to say that a person can transfer an angel to another person is wrong. To direct angels is also wrong, they only take orders from God. This book seems to place the help of angels above the need for Jesus. Every mention of angels in the Bible where angels appear to or help someone it either involves God sending them for a reason and/or because people prayed to God for help.

I also believe the author missed a wonderful opportunity to include the gospel for salvation in the pages where the protagonist becomes a Christian. The book mentions her believing in Jesus, the cross and His resurrection, but it fails to mention His death on the cross, the shedding of His blood for the remission of sins, the asking for forgiveness, nor repentance of sins.

I started this last night and finished tonight. This is the seventh novel I have read by this author. Many Christians, including myself, have had encounters that they later concluded were with angels. Such encounters are sprinkled throughout the Bible. Many more have sensed something unseen and holy or unholy acting in their presence. Many non-Christians have had similar experiences. But this title promises something more than single, isolated, or ephemeral encounters and the author delivers. His characters are richly developed, the pace is rapid, the settings are in a modern city which he and I know well, the protagonist and supporting cast are believable and presented credibly, and the reactions of others likewise.

This was one of the more interesting Christian type novels that I read. The sense of the supernatural was interesting and the development of Sophie as a character was good. For once a particular type of Christianity was not being espoused. I hate the one upmanship that often occurs in Christian writing. There's a recognition that God has many different children who relate best to God in different ways.

The opening of Sophie's eyes to the happenings in her life that were weighing her down was brought out in a good way. There's the typical Christianese spoken by different characters. One has to be exposed to learn it, rather like learning law speak or Shakespeare.

Detta is Sophie's guide through gaining an understanding of her unusual gift of being able to see angels and demons. She's a lovable character who welcomes everyone with a spirit of hospitality. Her son Anthony is probably slated to be the love interest in Sophie's life. Not a bad choice. They seem well matched.

Sophie spent years thinking she was insane because she saw what others couldn't see. She has some friends she felt open to share with but not anyone who could truly help her to deal with the interruptions that such a gift causes in life. Crystal was a friend into New Age beliefs. Thinking her name suits her for that. Since Crystal believed in Psychics etc. Sophie was comfortable being open with her. Her friend Kimmy was someone she met when she was in the Psych ward. Kimmy learned about Sophie's experiences while there so there was no problem being open with her.

These two friends ended up gaining from Sophie's better understanding of her gift. They were guided by Sophie to an accepting of their guardian angels and a relief from some of their hang ups.

The Supernatural made this a fun book to read. The author Jeffrey McClain Jones is good at describing the setting and what's happening. He's an interesting enough writer to keep me interested in finishing the book.

The Girl Who Sees Angels surprised me in the best way. Sophie’s journey from being dismissed as “crazy” to finally owning her abilities feels emotional, relatable, and honestly pretty inspiring. The blend of supernatural tension especially the dark figure haunting her at night with the warmth of newfound support makes the story easy to connect with.
I loved how Detta and her son Anthony help Sophie make sense of what she’s been seeing her whole life. The way her “gift” shifts from something shameful to something powerful was really moving. Some scenes, especially when she frees people from the strange creatures following them, gave me actual chills.
If you like stories that mix spiritual elements, mystery, and personal healing, this one is definitely worth reading. It’s eerie, uplifting, and leaves you rooting hard for Sophie.

Fascinating Look at What Might Be

Sophie Ramos - a young woman battling in a world where she can see another dimension surrounding her. A spiritual dimension where angelic beings and demonic spirits grapple for the souls of unaware humans. It isn't until Sophie meets Detta that she starts to understand that she is not crazy, but there is a purpose in what she sees. Sophie begins her journey to understanding herself, and discovers a personal faith in Jesus along the way. Not schmaltzy of preachy, but a good read, that might get you asking yourself questions.

So good!

I absolutely loved this book. The main character was super realistic and I really liked her and rooted her on the entire time. The supporting characters were all so great. I love that God would give someone a fantasy story that glorifies Him and helps us to think more about what battle we’re fighting, while also being just plain enjoyable. I am absolutely reading the others in the series.

Could not put it down

I absolutely loved this book. I always have wondered what it would be like to be a seer and how it would change your walk with the Lord. I absolutely loved the thrills and chills this book gave me. I could hardly put it down.

This book is for those interested in the spiritual realm, angels and demons. It is for those who need to have their faith renewed in the Lord!

I can not wait to read the rest of the books to see what happens to Sophie and her crew!

It was alright story, but as a practising g spiritualist, I did find the concept of monsters hanging on to people a little bit wieird, some of this makes sense to me because I see spirits myself (not monsters) and also I agree with healng and also rescue work
But but if you are in the know so to speak , I did it a bit off the wall, each to their own tho.

Makes you think

This was an interesting read! I think all of us have felt a “presence” at some point throughout our lives, good and bad..we just didn’t realize it, or we did? I know the Bible talks about many angels. Very interesting! I wouldn’t mind reading the next book if there is one?

Overkill but Thoughtful

I have to admit that this was an extreme debatable subject. The author has some extreme views of demons, and the subject of Jesus' presence in our lives is certainly open to debate, but it held my interest. As a Christian, I read the book with open doubt. Parts of it were just out stupid, but the.underlying message of Jesus' love for us was good.

Seeing a story in a whole new light

Taking our faith to new possibilities of a fact Jesus has already told us the battle is spiritual and in a spiritual realm. What a great story to help is understand the verse deeper...
2 Timothy 1:7 - For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

Interesting book! It was a lot more religious than I had anticipated. I am not sure if there are people than can actually see angels, like in this book. If there are, it must be extremely challenging. for them to lead a normal like.

This is a different genre for me....I usually don't read spiritual books, but I recommend this one!

Sweet Come to Jesus Story

This was a sweet come to Jesus story. Being agnostic and believing and understanding Angels more than gods and saviors, I found this book funny, lighthearted and delightful in places and boring in a few of the stories about Sophie's friends. I didn't think I'd finish it but I found it really sweet and cute, albeit friendly preachy 😊

Wonderful story

Since I started reading this book I’ve dreamt of people who I don’t know but feel like are Detta, Sophie and the Angels and demons that surround them!! Loved this book very much. I feel like Brent is the Devil in disguise and hate that it ended without me knowing. Hoping the second book will clear that up.
