This Wonderful Thing

Rate this book
From the author of bestselling and Carnegie-nominated debut BOY UNDERWATER comes a moving and hilarious novel for 10+ readers about friendships, family secrets, mystery – and life-changing hidden treasure… Jessica is playing with her family at the river when she finds a dirty, bedraggled teddy bear in the water.

She has no idea that it will change everything, forever.

Meanwhile, Cymbeline comes home from school to find that his mum’s house has been broken into – and the thieves seemed oddly focused on his toys. Thank goodness he had Not Mr Fluffy, his Bear of Most Extreme Importance, with him.

Soon, Jessica and Cymbeline find themselves swept up in a mystery that spans decades, threatens their families, and turns their lives upside down.

But sometimes, just maybe, a new life can be a really wonderful thing…

This book is the third part of the stories about Cymbeline. I enjoyed the first two books, I love the first part. The two were also quite readable independently. For this book you should know "Boy Underwater". The third book didn't convince me; it didn't touch me. It seems to me like "the first two were successful, lets write a third one". You can also skip this book – in my opinion.
We know from the first part that Cymbeline has lost his bear. Cymbeline is in danger of losing even more in this book. His mother's fiancé and his two daughters move in with them and Cymbeline has to share his mother and his home. In addition, someone breaks into their home and is obviously after the toys. In parallel, Jessica and her sister find a dirty teddy and you follow their story too.
This book is more fast-paced than the previous ones. The mysterious Mrs. Rose gets involved, plus the criminal activities, new secrets and lots of family chaos besides.
Many themes, old as well as new characters, Cymberline's story continues. Nevertheless, the book does not come close to the other two.

Nice book for kids and young teens. It deals with friendship and family and it also has its fair share of mystery and intrigue which, from an adult's point of view might seem a bit simple, but I bet kids really enjoy it. Enjoyable, but you must know that the target public is 9/13-year-olds.

Difficult to say what I thought to this book as it was ok, just felt as if nothing really happened.

In the middle. It was exciting and intriguing but some parts I just got bored.

Read this book to my daughter (9) and found it an engaging read with the two parallel storylines keeping her guessing on how they would eventually link up. Well written and plenty of scope for discussing theories. We also enjoyed the kids point of view to what life throw at you. Solid 4/5
