The final battle is won, but the war still wages within.
Between nightmares from the battle against the Sovereign Priest of Qos to preparing for the winter solstice, Tavros is beside himself and trying to keep from worrying his husband, Valis. And then he learns that Valis has never celebrated Solstice. That gives him a worthy distraction to latch onto so he can function.
When Tavros starts plotting a surprise, their child friend, Aenali, gives him the diversion he needs. She spirits Valis away so they can escort her parents to the monastery for her brother Jedai’s wedding to Maphias.
While Valis is gone and the Aesriphos decorate the monastery, Tavros suffers. His nightmares won’t let him sleep. The anxiety overwhelms him. And above all, he wants his husband back safe.
No, above all, he wants Valis’s first Solstice to be special. But the last time he and his friends had surprised Valis, it had nearly caused him a panic attack. Will his Solstice surprise cause Valis more anxiety?
Solstice is mostly a fluffy, Christmassy read while also dealing with what these characters call War Trauma. PTSD is serious, and I did my best to treat it respectfully.
Solstice is meant to be read after the last book in The God Jars Saga—Incursion, The God Jars Saga Book 9. This cannot be read as a standalone.
If there’s one thing Devon likes most, it’s chaos. They have a chaotic mind and a messy house, and they throw their characters into every calamitous situation possible. When they aren’t writing, they’re editing or formatting other authors’ works, building websites, creating graphics, reading, playing video games, or watching Fortnite streams on Twitch. They like to stay busy. So yes. Chaos.
A gentle surprise whilst a husband is also suffering from trauma and anxiety. I really liked the the way everyone described the need for therapy. And that there's no shame in it at all. I appreciated all the decorating for the Solstice as it felt a little bit like Christmas spirit. I enjoyed this addition but I only wish for that spiced milk recipe because it sounds delicious!
This takes place immediately after Incursion, but BEFORE the bonus chapter at the end of that book.
Tavros realizes, that like Birth Anniversaries, Valis has never celebrated Solstice, so while Valis and Aenali are off to get Aenali’s parents for the wedding of Maphais and Jedai’s wedding, Tavros gets the entire city to make it a Soltice will never forget. The story is also a look at post-war PTSD that several characters are experinceing after vanquishing the High Priest of Qos. The subject is handled with great compassion and sensitivity. It’s a lovely epilogue to the series.
This holiday novella is everything and more!! Tavros has always been amazing {when his head isn’t stuck up his @$$ that is}. I love this extra special glimpse of him in ‘Solstice’. His love & fierce dedication to Valis and his entire community is so admirable. Also ... most definitely helped put me into the holiday spirit!!
I loved reading Solstice and it is a great addition to the series and shows what happens when everyone is home. You will need to have read the series before this book is read! I loved getting to see how they are doing now.
