I'm not sure in what world Roland's skill would be considered useless (I'd have killed for it in middle and high school), but that aside, this was a surprisingly decent book.

Meh. Too “adult” for me and I think to adult unless YA teen or older. Not bad but not my thing. 3 it was middle of the road, stars.

Roland is quite happy being a silent partner in the heroes’ party and he’s actually the one who finishes off the Demon Lord. But with the riches of the kingdom laid before him, all Roland wants is to retire and lead a normal life. Which would be fine, if somebody with a transmogrifying pet cat who only knows a life of adventure had any clue what normal actually is...

This is, let me get this out there, a particularly horny book for its genre. Roland is too ignorant of reality to even know what a ‘job’ is and during an interview for same soon afterwards he steals a pair of panties right off somebody and then replaces them in a scene after that. There’s some serious (obscured, yet quite obvious) sex chicanery as well.

Uh, but it was really enjoyable. The way to frame this book, for me, was realizing that it’s basically a low-class version of Way of the Househusband starring a very skilled-at-anything-but-real-life James Bond. And a talking cat.

Roland genuinely doesn’t seem overly horny himself, minus that egregious panty scene, and otherwise just approaches everything from the perspective of a) not knowing how to do it, but b) assuming that failure will result in death. So you get isekai sans isekai as an overpowered, but well-meaning, hero attempts to blend into the background, which naturally just makes him stick out all the more.

It would almost be a harem story (and technically is) if Roland hadn’t started an intimate relationship with Rila, his demonkin cat (two guesses how they end up together), and then bedded a random adventuress he wall-slams after an attempted ambush. The pillow talk with Rila later in the book is some of the best stuff in the book - demons are so predictable.

I tend not to read books for the sex, but it doesn’t bother me here because the book is relatively mature about it. Minus one character’s design there’s not a lot of intentional sex appeal and it’s treated as something that occurs between consenting adults in a way I appreciated. No stumbling in on anybody naked in this volume or anything of that nature, minus the scene I mentioned earlier. It’s refreshing to see a book that treats adults as adults, at least compared to most manga (at least for this volume, come to that [so to speak]).

And, again, it’s quite funny. The obnoxious coworker, who I thought for sure was heading to some serious assault territory is immediately defused and just outright ignored by everybody as he tries to start conflict in the office. That’s definitely one way to get rid of a trope.

Roland’s female friend at work who teaches him the ropes is woefully clueless about the nature of Rila (as a snarky cat in the Salem vein, Rila nearly steals this book, but not quite, though she deservedly gets the omake at the end) and, indeed, Roland himself. That won’t stop her from trying to make time with him, but Roland is nothing if not oblivious (even as he’s getting it on elsewhere).

I quite enjoyed a lot of the character dynamics in this book - when work senpai and Rila square off during a house visit it is very reminiscent of Ryoko and Ayeka in Tenchi Muyo and I am definitely okay with that comparison (now that I reflect on it, the overall tone is pretty similar as well).

Between cats eating cookies, rampaging demon lords with no magic, the threat of interrupted lunch, and sexy hanky-panky disguised as feline yowling (the poor innkeep), there are a lot of good laughs once the book starts going. I was very concerned for the first 40 pages or so, but it really settles into a rhythm (in more ways than one) as it goes.

3 stars. Definitely a thirstier book than I normally go for; it certainly doesn’t start off with a lot of promise. But our hero, who might be slightly prurient but doesn’t act like a scumbag (and his loud-mouth cat), really won me over. I’ll be back.

I thought I would like this book. And while the concept is good - the fact in the second chapter he stole a woman’s underwear while she was interviewing him without her knowledge was disturbing. a solid DNF for me there.

So, props for getting straight to it and having the main character literally screw with the Demon Lord. Fastest "Enemies to Lovers" ever (maybe)!

Or, not the Demon "Lord"—she's a Lady, and I don't know why it's never translated that way other than because "Lady" doesn't feel threatening enough, and also this isn't Isekai Gay Sex or it would be vaguely more interesting.

I mostly say that because I've seen/read a lot of bad romances lately, and I like when that isn't the focus of the story, since once they're in a committed relationship and maybe even have kids... where does the story really go?

Still, I got mildly annoyed when Roland ended up HEAVILY flirting with* another woman, to distract her. I'm a serial monogamist myself and can't really see myself comfortable with cheating, or even having one-night stands when not in a relationship (which is currently hopefully until death, with my spouse). I even hated it when Kenichi went behind his "wife's"** back when the one noble girl tried to butter him up by having a maid play to his every kink, and he took them up on the offer.

That's about all that I really have to complain about, actually. The art is fine—I think "Cat" Rila could be cuter, but it's not like I could do better. The story is pretty funny when ignoring the cheating: Roland is an assassin who apparently never learned what life is like for Normal people, so his idea of the Normal he wants to be is incredibly lacking. It DOES have a bit of that effect where lower-level characters get a glimpse of Roland's true abilities and they become sycophantic as a result, but it's hard to say I wouldn't do the same if someone was incredibly competent around me. Heck, I'd appreciate some competency around me, especially at work!

I mean, I guess I could complain about the "I stole your panties" joke, but it's clear he did it more as a demonstration of his skill than as stealth sexual assault, and his interest fixates on being Normal more than being a Pervert. So, weak running gag, but it honestly does feel like the strongest "harmless" way to prove that kind of skill, though I would've given more props had the guild master been male and he did the same thing.

And I guess it feels a little "slave"-y for Rila to be under the collar's power, where *Roland* controls whether she's in Demonkin form or Cat form, especially since he only used the item to safely get rid of it. However, *she* chose to stay with him as a result of freeing her from the "Demon Lord" role, so... *vaguely* okay? Slave-in-Name-Only? Ehhhh, Roland seems pretty cool about consent, so *I guess* I'll let it slide.

Okay read, definitely enjoyed most of it. Not sure if I would keep reading, though I wouldn't turn it down if the rest of the series fell in my lap.

*it suggests they actually did the deed, but... in the street? DANG

**they were not officially married but considered themselves effectively that

This gets 3 stars because I liked the artstyle quite a bit as well as the general story idea, but in the end parts of it fell kinda short for me.
Aside that, I thought this was going to be a fairly "PG" series with some fanservice. I didn't expect almost a berserk introduction albeit less explicit in the first couple of chapters...
Don't get me wrong, while I couldn't care less about fanservice and sex in a manga, I would still like to at least know the story I picked up is for a certain age group, just to have a vague idea of what to expect in the long run at least. Because my thought going blindly into this series was... oh no tags in the description from my library, it's probably gonna be somewhat chill series with probably some fanservice moments and hopefully not too many awkward/icky/creepy ones of those. It's not quite that. It's not completely horrible/explicit at those parts... it's just that it's mainly out of nowhere... While the series had potential concept-wise, I'm not that into reading about random sexual encounters and whatnot, as well as a few dubious moments especially when the series isn't really gripping my attention storywise. I'm in it for the story not whatever fanservice or horny moments series might also contain. Yet a part of me still wants to give vol. 2 a try as I generally live by my 2-3 vol. try-out rule.

I wanted to like this. Like, what’s life like for the legendary assassin once he retires? But his goal of “being normal” doesn’t seem to be really something he’s interested in but rather a dream he copied from someone else once his purpose was fulfilled. And who knows? Maybe in later volumes he’ll look for a goal of his ow, but I’ll never know because I will not be reading the rest of this series mainly because he got a job by sexual harassing someone. That’s partially mitigated by the fact I think he might not understand what a violation it was to steal someone’s underwear right off them, but it still made my skin crawl and the rest of his interactions with female characters make me think there are harem gathering type shenanigans ahead. Which isn’t necessarily bad, but pretty boring for a reader like me.

Plus he fails pretty hard at the normal thing (probably because he doesn’t exactly understand why it’s a desirable goal or what normal even looks like) and so falls back on his OP skills for everything which isn’t really creative/entertaining.

I was a bit disappointed, because I thought it was going to be more fantastical than what it was. I did feel like the story wasn't moving at a fast pace, but I understand that the first volume in a series can be slower as it's setting up the story (characters, places, etc.). It was still an original concept and I appreciated it for it. It wasn't my favorite manga, but I still enjoyed it, even if it wasn't fully what I had in mind.

Something that I got a bit bored of at a certain point was the fact that the main character wanted to live a 'normal' life and kept bringing it up. I got the point early on in the story. Everytime someone said something that he realized was 'normal,' he would bring up the whole normal life thing. He did go from a particular lifestyle to a more laidback one, so it is still understandable that he's learning how to live a typical, normal life.

Hopefully the story picks up as the volumes progress!

I still recommend this book as it is different and has an interesting premise.

I like that Roland is being your typical over the top my abilities/powers are better than yours so let me talk down to you inferior people then help you once you beg types.

He is just trying his best to discover what being a normal person is and live that way although I think he still deep down likes doing fighting work just not as an assassin, but I still think he hasn’t figured that out yet.

This was about as bland as they get. I was as bored as the protagonist. The only character I cared about was the demon lord/cat. I would have given it a higher grade if the artwork was of a higher caliber but it was very average. I’m dropping this one easily. 2.5 stars

Way O.P. assassin decides to live an aggressively 'normal' life post world saving (with the defeated demon king in tow as his cat/wife?/minion). Its got some decent shenanigans but is a bit too male fantasy centered for me in general *shrug*

Deeply one dimensional characters, which sucks cause the concept was cute. The art is good though!

It's hard to judge this yet; it's a pretty okay start to a series, but I find a few things a little odd, like how is Roland's Skill useless? But overall, it's been a good read.

This is unique. Someone doesn't want the spotlight. But I find it unusual that he has ZERO idea what "normal" is.....who raised him...? Where did he live..grow up? Did he NEVER see normal people?

An enjoyable read and quite funny in places. The MC is going through slow character development during his career change.
Some of the volumes would benefit for content warnings.

The start is pretty meh. Ad this guy definitely doesn't know what 'normal' looks like. ANY kind of normal. Plus he's ridiculously overpowered, but HE doesn't think so.
On second try it's not too bad.
(I wonder if light novel comes across better?)
