One little party turned my world upside down.

After I challenged the Blood Council's four shifter heirs at a college party, the last thing I expected was to receive a full scholarship and an admittance letter from the exclusive Wolf Moon Academy.

Despite never desiring to be an alpha, this was an opportunity of a lifetime… or so I thought.

I soon learned that there was more behind my admission to the Academy than my education. I was there to be a lesson to the heirs -- in particular, the sexiest and strongest one, Liam Hale.

As if that wasn’t bad enough, it turns out that he is my true mate. A fact that should be treasured, but he makes it clear that we will never be together.

However, things aren’t always what they seem, and we all have secrets— some bigger than others. When the truth comes out it’ll either set me free or set me up for disaster.

Reading has always been one of my favorite hobbies, even as a little girl. When I was a toddler, my parents would read stories to me over and over. I would hear them so often that I had the books memorized and could recite the story word by word.

My favorite genres are fantasy, paranormal, and contemporary romance. So of course that's what I'm inclined to write.

I have a husband, two young daughters, and a mini Australian Shepherd. I've lived in Tennessee the majority of my life and love the state.

I'm extremely addicted to caffeine and enjoy drinking coffee and lattes.

DNF At 32%

The synopsis says there are "instances of bullying" in this novel. The definition of instance is "an example or single occurrence of something" according to Oxford Languages. Now please explain to me how something that should theoretically be happening maybe 2 or 3 times (because the word is plural in the synopsis) throughout the novel becoming something that happens Every. Single. Time the heroine is in proximity to the so-called hero.

It truly feels like I was misled with regards to the story in this book in such a big way. Granted I only got 32% into the story. This should be categorized as a Bully Paranormal Romance and even that is putting it very mildly. Bullying is when you're rude and mean to someone for "reasons". This book took it up to abusive harassment in 5 seconds flat. I am not the public intended for this kind of story. Had I known it would be this bad I would have never picked this up in the first place.

The most frustrating part of it all is that the actual story is good (when you put aside the harassment for the sake of harassment). The world the author starts to create is interesting. There were some mean girls for the sake of being mean which was annoying to listen through. I wanted to like this but I just couldn't get over the harassment from the so-called hero and the slut-shaming from the heroine directed at other women that were mistreating her because they could.

My review would not be too helpful.
I wanted an easy read to have so I could drift to sleep.
And then I got mad because this was too simple (It was sloppy enough to anger me, but still the proper amount of “not that bad” to stop me from deleting the book on the spot)

And now I am writing a post on violence and depictions of turbulent mating bonds in these kinds of romances.

I am not a hater.
I won`t throw stones as I am well aware of the glass layer under my feet.
However, I`ll not let this opportunity pass. I had to say something about this tendency of awkwardly trying to balance a heterosexual couple by adjusting their innate powers in the fantastic world.

This review should have a title and it should read: A distribution of control in the search of trying to define love in paranormal writings; as well as establishing equilibrium and sanity for protagonists.

[I was prepared to make a deep dive into it, but I got too exhausted by the thought that I may have to dedicate hours on making an analysis on this text.]

I may be rambling. I am tired.

2 stars. I’m not continuing the series.

It took me 2 attempts to finish. I DNF’d it the first time @ 30 or 40%. I ended up coming back to it & finishing it bc it was the only thing I had loaded on my kindle & had no internet service. Eventually I just stuck it out but I’m not a fan of the love interest or the story. The characters I like are her brother & her 2 guy best friends.

3-3.5

Soooo....hmmm...this is a little hard to rate. The story left me feeling conflicted. I'm not sure if I liked it or not.

First off, I read this book right after reading Ms. Grey's Bloodshed Academy, and as I read the first half of this book, I couldn't help feeling like reading a remade or spinoff version of Bloodshed. There were too many similarities in terms of plot and events that were nearly identical.

The heroine has someone she knows who's desperate to attend a prestigious academy and gets pissed when said heroine ends up being the one to attend. The mother isn't happy about the heroine going to said Academy. There's a special necklace that plays an important role to the book. Said mother has secrets she's intentionally hiding. Thankfully as the story progresses, the similarities dwindled some.

Now for the characters. I'll be honest, there's absolutely nothing I like about the love interest, Liam. I know this was a bully romance, but there is a fine line between bullying and flat out abuse, and unfortunately his behavior towards...well, everybody in the book...was flat out abusive. It's hard for me to rout for someone who's supposed to be one of the heroes of the book when he acts more like a villain. The author tries giving him reasons for his poor behavior, but it was honestly poorly explained and felt like an afterthought.

As for the lead heroine Mia, much like how I feel about the book itself, she's left me feeling conflicted. At first I was liking her no nonsense behavior. She held her head up high and wasn't taking shit from nobody. But then she started going along with everything and quick to accept Liam's bad antics just because he's hot and he's her mate.

I honestly loved Mia's friends a lot more than her and Liam. Bree was a breath of fresh air, a spoiled rich girl who's opened her eyes to the world around her and wanting to change her ways. Tripp's comedy and shenanigans was welcomed and definitely helped lighten the mood. Poor Kai...I honestly wish he was the lead love interest. I'd rather root for him, and he says it perfectly in the book. Liam gets everything handed to him, including the girl.

Lastly the premise of the book. Honestly this is what I'm more invested in in the story. I hate the relationship, but I'm intrigued with the central plot. Though predictable, you still get this air of mystery and surprise twist that leaves you wanting to know more. It makes me want to read more to see how it all plays out, but unfortunately that's all I care about. The relationship aspect of the book, I have no interest in at this point. My hope is that if I do end up reading the next books of the series, I'll grow to tolerate or even love the relationship more than I do right now.

Other than a few errors, this ended up being an interesting book that had me both loving and hating it. I received an advanced copy of the book in exchange for my honest, unbiased opinion.

This world was really interesting and I love the heroine so far. I was kind of disappointed in Liam though and that there wasn't really any groveling after the way he treated Mia. Especially seeing that this is a trilogy and there's two more books I really think there was room for some groveling and more development.

So many things wrong with this book. I wanted to like it because the synopsis showed potential, but that potential was unrealized. The editing was poorly done. There were so many sentences that I had to re-read multiple times to get the idea. Some sentences were written in a way that ignored the previous sentence or scenario. Poor word choices abound. The plot is typical and the character setup is overdone- 4 friends and a hot girl with a sprinkling of supporting characters. Ugh. It’s fine if you do something interesting with that setup, but this novel just runs through the predictable action like a checklist. Vague mother who gives her daughter priceless family heirloom, but fails to mention that it has world-shattering significance? Duh. Let’s teach the readers all about it in class but leave the FMC in the dark because while she’s supposed to be this mighty character, we’re going to give her the IQ of a rock. Please. I really tried to finish this book, but i just couldn’t even force myself to find out what happens. I read for enjoyment, and this does not bring anything but frustration.

Wow the characters in this book are amazing and intense. The main character Mia goes to a college party with her brother where she meet Bree. That is when she meets Liam and the other Heirs, and when she stands upto him things start to get twisty.
First we see her get to go to a school she didn't even apply to, due to Bree but also we get to see more between Mia and Liam as he fights the bond and makes her time hell at the academy along with the other heirs.
Until things start to come to light and some truths are revealed do we find ourselves at the end completely unaware its already the end of the book after being sucked into such a wicked storyline.
I totally recommend this and I can't wait to see what happens next.

So is this a bully romance?

I mean I love the whole enemies to lovers thing, but this feels a little different. Especially when it is a group of guys bullying one girl. Just kind of weird. So I'm not sure that this is my thing. But that being said I did enjoy it. I mean it feels like a trashy paranormal book. The writing wasn't great and the dialogue had me gagging at some points, but it kept me intrigued and I wanted to know what was going to happen next. It felt a little like what you would find on wattpad. So good, but know what you are getting into.

I loved shadow Mate, Mia and her brother max go to a college party and well things get out of hand. Next thing Mia a off to the wolf moon academy. She has already challenged the shifter heirs unknowingly.
They try to make her miserable and our girl Mia has a back bone and will not stand down. I love her. You will hate Liam for awhile but you’ll understand him as the story goes on. Then I promise you’ll love him. So excited for book two!

Mia is a strong main character without being overpowering. Liam is an alpha, bad boy along with his friends as well as being heirs to the main houses. While there were no real big surprises or reveals the story was steady paced. I liked Mia's choice of friends. There is some bullying in this book by both guys and girls.

Mia got a shock when she was accepted to a school she never applied to. Once she gets there, she gets more surprises. I like this one. I'm a bit upset that I'll have to wait for book 2 though. This book is just getting started on the lies and corruption that is going on in the shifter leadership and has been happening. This is going to be interesting!

This was not horrific...
Still pretty annoying though, but that's because I don't think I like the love-interest-bullys-mc trope.
The "big reveal" was quite obvious but I think that was purposefully so.

It was a nice quick book to read to appease my constant thirst for werewolf books so I can't really complain that much 🤷‍♀️

I bought most of this authors books, and I now consider myself crazy. What can I say though, I liked them all.

I loved Mia, the main character. She’s brave and loyal, and loves her family dearly. Really, she’s one of the reasons why the book was better then I thought it would be.

There’s some bullying and instances of mental abuse in this book, especially from the love interest. For that, I fell out of the book a bit, and didn’t really understand the reason why Liam had to act like a grumpy old man.

Anyway though, I loved the world building and the book still managed to pull me along.

Off to the next book!

This book was definitely a worthy read. The enemy to lovers trope was done so well with this book, and even I couldn't decide if I loved or hated the alpha-hole! The FMC is relatable and great. I love a strong female lead. And the mystery surrounding the academy and our girls past was unexpected. Phenomenal book!

I finished the whole thing and that counts for something

SPOILERS !!!

I finished reading this so I guess that counts for something. I think the concept has great potential and some of the side characters were good. I was talking to my tablet (which is how I know wasn't necessarily bored). However, I was mainly me getting angry and frustrated. If you like stories about some wolves, then it is that.

The only characters I liked consistently were Tripp, Kai and Max. I feel like played his role as a side character well. We didn't get much about him, but that made sense. He was a simple comedic friend that was a pretty good friend to the others. Kai was the secondary choice...or maybe not honestly. I feel like he was unnecessary collateral damage to the chaos that is the main characters. He deserved much more than to just be disregarded as he was. He was also wayyyy more nice than I would've been to the FL. Max got a little more shine than Tripp and Kai. I feel like we got the information we needed to understand Max as a character. He was a caring brother that had normal emotions towards his sister that he was close to. His envious moments made sense and his personal journey to work through that was realistic. Now the characters I couldn't stand.

Mia and Liam are by far the most incompatible confusing pair that "fate" ever put together. I've read wolf stories with mates, but this right here was just madness. I can't even figure out why they should've ended up together besides the "magnetic pull" only Mia seemed to understand. I get the story was told in Mia's POV, so we were mainly in her head. I desperately wanted out from her thoughts though. The literal abuse, bullying, degrading and just overall disregarding that Liam and his friends inflicted was quite ridiculous, in my opinion. I've read enemies to lovers or pull the girl's pigtails cause you like her troupes, but this was a lot different since they didn't make sense. Chasing her and showing up just to tell her to stay away; my brain couldn't wrap around that logic. However, Mia was equally insufferable. Him getting angry about your friend holding your hand while having a girl on him...and you're happy? What made it even more confusing was the constant reminder that she was "strong" or stood up to him cause it had no weight to it in the slightest; especially since we were in her head knowing she was two seconds from giving in. Towards the end, when I read the part of them getting together, I genuinely couldn't figure out why. They just seemed to have sexual tension and wanted to own her. That's about it. Even her parents' small snippet about their mates was more believable and loving I guess than these two we've been following the whole time.

I can rant all day about why large parts just don't make sense. However, I won't disregard that there were interesting parts and I was interested enough to finish the whole thing. I'll read the rest of the series, honestly, just to know how it ends cause the council approach is something I want to know about. I hope Liam actually gets some character development (LIKE THE BEST CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT EVER) and gets to be palatable.

“Shadow Mate” by Jen L. Grey offers a brand-new, original and long overdue take on the “soul mate” trope: what it you find you mate and he is not only a real pain in your “derrière” but a unpalatable brute, who knows no limits when it comes to put you on the spot: meet Liam Hale, who by a whim of fate happens to be Mia Davis’ mate.

As we encounter Mia, she is a young shifter about to finish high school and still trying to decide about where to go to college, maybe following into her brother’s steps by attending KSU, where her brother has just invited her to a party, the very same brother who has always counted to attend Wolf Moon Academy and wasn’t accepted. Mia has not illusions, if her Alpha material brother didn’t get in, there is not point for her to apply, thus she doesn’t. And so greater is the surprise when she receives the admission letter including a full scholarship. Despite her doubts – she has already alienated all the Council heir at the KC party – she decides to accept the scholarship, after all there is not better education for a shifter to be had and it comes free of cost. Cannot be so easy, can it? As any gift, it comes with some strings attached, the kind you cannot always see at first sight, including Liam and her bond to him, despite all his flaws, and believe it, he has many. Unfortunately, the Academy is hiding old secrets and Liam would rather have Liam on her side, when confronting them. Fortunately, Mia has Bree (Liam’s sister) on her side.

“Shadow Mate” is a well-written, interesting Academy reading, twisted and fast-paced. Parallels to ‘Twilight’ may be unintended but nonetheless evident, but at least in Jen L. Grey, Liam is a presented as pain the “derrière” from the beginning, and he does not sparkle, either in the physical nor the figurative sense. A compelling lecture for all fans of the genre.

Generously giving this 3 stars.
I'm very conflicted on how I feel about this book. The flow was very erratic, at times the flow almost had me quitting because I was so bored & disinterested. The world building is limited, I think part of it was because of the mystery behind the story, but I still felt a bit lost, not even able to determine if this was set in the future, or current, or what. There was also a lot of conflict about werewolves in general, like mixing into the human population in school, but yet having an advantage physically, this wasn't explained or worked around to satisfy me that it could be done, like an all werewolf team playing against a mostly human team, just didn't seem kosher to a world building. Then there were the main characters being flat, I didn't really feel I knew them any better at the end of the story than I did at the beginning. I had no emotional attachment to them to care what happens next. There was nothing I liked about Liam (MMC), or could say he was redeemable. Mia (FMC) was a bit all over the place, sometimes she had "alpha" powers, and other times she was just a doormat. I really shouldn't have picked this book up, because I'm not a fan of the "bully" romance, since I can't forgive & forget. Liam crossed a line that can't be undone with a "sorry" to forgive all he did to Mia to avoid the mate bond. I'm not interested in continuing with the series.

This is absolutely entertaining and unputdownable! Liam and Mia are deliciously delightful and with the push of the mating bond being overbearing, watching these two try to resist the pull is just so compelling. I think these two opposites are phenomenal and I can't wait to see just what they'll accomplish together.

Jen L Grey is such a riveting author! From the first paragraph on, I couldn't set this aside. The characters are no nonsense and there is just so much going on here. Multiple intriguing things kept popping up and I can't wait to see where everything will come together.

Mia is sweet but she's not afraid to stand her ground. She's not one to take anything from anyone for too long. Her struggles and heartbreak are so very real, they just pour from these pages.

I wanted to see Liam on his knees. He needs to really show up for Mia. He and his pack of punks were really vile to Mia and her friends. But the potential he has to really alpha out is tremendous and I can't wait to see him break that out more. He's keeping me glued to this series.

If fated mates with a strong rejection theme is your jam, check this out! You're going to absolutely love this! Mia and Liam are hot and this series promises so much more!

Shadow Mate is the first book in Wolf Moon Academy series. An end of the year party at her brother's college was suppose to be just to get to know others for when she is enrolled in the fall. Unbeknownst to Mia she challenges the four elite alphas when all she was trying to do was stand up for her new friend.

After the college party, everything changes for Mia. She was accepted a full scholarship to a place she never applied. Wolf Moon Academy is for the future alphas to attend. If her own brother who is future alpha of their pack, can't get accepted then how did she manage to get accepted?

The mysteries and secrets don't end there. Upon arriving at WMA she is faced with the antics of the four elite alphas from the party. Mainly the hottest one who also is her fated mate Liam.

Read to find out what happens when Liam rejects being Mia's mate and secrets thought to be hidden come to light. The Twists and drama will keep you turning the pages.

She’s an alpha and more powerful than she realizes. Mia and her brother Max come from a family where her father is a low ranking alpha. She’s ready to go to university with her brother when she gets a surprising offer. A full ride scholarship to the prestigious Wolf Academy and she didn’t even apply. She’s excited but knows she will run into Liam and his three goons who are all the heirs to the council. They’re arrogant and cruel but she’s been the only one to stand up to them. Her surprise is that when she gets to Wolf Academy and keeps running into Liam she realizes they are fated mates but he’s rejecting her. She soon realizes something is wrong with the council, and she learns her entire life has been a lie. Now does she stay under the radar, or take her rightful place and take down the current corrupt council leaders? After a run-in with an alpha wolf at a party, the last thing Mia expected was to be accepted into Wolf Moon Academy. But that's exactly where she finds herself. As exciting as it is to attend such a prestigious college, she discovers quickly that there's a pecking order and a lot more going on in the background than she could have ever guessed. While fighting her attraction to Liam is difficult, she's only scratch the surface of the trouble bubbling within. And it might just mean a fight for her survival.

I think this is one of my favorites by this author. Mia is a strong heroine with a huge heart, and the way she stands up for herself and those around her is rewarding to see. Liam and his friends are a bunch of bullies who have been brought up to be exactly that, and watching her stand up to them and work to help them change their attitudes makes this such a fun read. The mystery and intrigue going on in the background leads to an exciting adventure and makes me want to discover where she will take us next.

I dont usually go for the YA books because I like a bit more heat in my romance books but I absolutely loved this one. It was just the right amount of dark for my tastes which is what had me reading it in the first place. The fmc is one Feisty and badass girl who won't just bow down when she's told to. She got an invite to an academy where she basically had to accept and while there she met her true mate....her true mate is a complete jerk to her and im not usually into the whole enemies to lovers trope but I found it was really well done in this story. I cant wait to read more from this author.

This book will keep you reading and on your toes until you are done. We have Mia who is so sassy, and don't take s***from anyone. We have Bree who she meet at a party that her brother brought her to. We have Liam, who is Bree's brother and all ***. Mia gets and invitation to go to the wolf moon academy and becomes best friends with Bree. Liam runs the school with his three friends. But what will happen when Mia stands up to him? How far will Liam and the rest take their evil threats? What will Bree do to keep her family and friends safe?

Mia, Liam, Bree, and Tripp kept me on the edge of my seat. Right from the beginning I was pulled right in and didn't want it to end. Some parts made cry, had me mad, and broke my heart too, but there are some laughs and a whole lot of twists that will keep you glued to your Kindle wanting to find out what happens. Will Mia be able to figure everything out and unravel secrets from the past or will others stop her ? An amazing read that won't disappoint and will have you wanting to know more. Can't wait to read what she had next.

What a phenomenal book. Mia is off to a human College when she unexpectedly receives a scholarship to the most elite school for shifters, Wolf Moon Academy. Here she will make a few friends, many enemies, and learn so many things about herself that will forever change her life. Let's not forget about her newly acquired bestie who happens to be dating her brothers best friend and her super sexy, foul temperd brother. This is such a wonderfully unexpected adventure. Definitely a page turner.
