After putting an end to the disease that was ravaging Lilias, Shirayuki returns home with Zen and the others. But on their next day off, Shirayuki and Zen embark on a new adventure—a date! Meanwhile, Mitsuhide is furious to learn that Kiki’s been keeping a life-altering secret from him!
I’m honestly running out of things to say in each review as nothing much happens in each volume, haha. So expect these to be much shorter than my regular reviews!
My favorite part of this whole volume was Kiki’s backstory and how she came to the palace as I’ve always liked Kiki but we’ve never gotten much info about her until now. And seeing how close she and Mitsuhide are is just precious. 🥰
Another good volume!
‼️Content‼️
Language: heck; dang it; piss; damnable
Violence: sparring and a duel (nothing over PG)
Sexual: mild suggestive hints; a guy mistakes a girl as a boy
". . . There are more things in this world that can protect you than just a blade. And with your own blade, you can protect far more than just yourself."
Can we just take a moment to admire how pretty this cover is? It's so gorgeous! Absolutely love it!
I really enjoyed the opening chapter in this one! After how intense things were last volume, it was VERY nice to see Shirayuki and Obi well and everyone reunited and celebrating! The new friends made has me hoping that will eventually see them again because I'll definitely miss them!
TIME FOR A DATE!!! EEEEEPPP! I laughed when the creator mentioned in a sidebar it was Zen's Blessed Day because I think that really would have been a VERY accurate title! LOL! I was bummed they seemed to do more shopping for their friends than just enjoying one's company. Well, granted they DID do that, but I would rather them have shopped and browsed just because they could, but I guess that really wouldn't have matched with their personalities? Part of why I love Shirayuki is because of how caring she is and willing to give her all and I think that was another moment we see how true that is. Even Zen suggested her shopping for dresses and such that he could get her, but the gift he got her couldn't have been more perfect (and vice versa for what she got him). I really really loved that chapter! <3 (Also Shirayuki looked so pretty!)
I have always thought Kiki was amazing, but WOW! This volume showed just how much she can slay and an absolute girl boss she is! And shoutout to her Father too because despite their differences, for him to let her go serve under Zen given the circumstances really shows how deep his love goes for her!
But yeah, Kiki is amazing. I never expected her to have a few things that happened and ADORED the ending because I would have been SO heartbroken if this story, HER story, went a different route! I 100% understand Mitsuhide's anger and actually appreciated seeing that side of him since he's usually always so upbeat. It added another layer to his character as well as to their friendship.
Overall, just great, powerful, and insightful chapters about who Kiki is and how our trio came to be the trio they were right from the start!
Finally, some backstory for Kiki! I enjoyed seeing the loyalty between her and Mitsuhide (even if neither one of them usually admits it). Getting a glimpse of Mitsuhide's angry side was interesting, too...
No longer plagued by the plague, it’s time for our heroes to celebrate and get back to life at the palace. With everybody able to let their collective hair down, it’s time for lesser crises to take the fore. Between Zen’s date with Shirayuki and Kiki setting off Mitsuhide, however, there’s still a LOT going on...
After all the plot and circumstance of the previous story arc this was a really fun change of pace. It was nice to step back and just watch the group interact and goof on one another. Zen and Shirayuki get some well earned time together and it is syrupy sweet without being cloying.
I appreciated that Zen had faith to let Shirayuki handle the plague on her own and that she acknowledges his support in doing so. The story also does a stellar job of making their date seem extra special by virtue of the amount of effort it takes to arrange.
These two can’t just wait for the school festival or head off to McD’s (or WcD’s or MacD’s or whatever any given manga calls it). They have duties and even something as simple as going into town warrants the treatment they give it here. It’s all utterly charming, but also reflective of their situation. It’s a good way to show that palace life isn’t pure luxury.
The back chapters are arguably even better, as they put the focus on Kiki, who is probably my favourite character in the series. We see the origins of her cool confidence and initial meetings with Zen and Mitsuhide.
This is all wrapped up in a bit of a shocking pronouncement, which sadly gets Mitsuhide all sulky rather than pushing him into actually doing something. It does have a fairly predictable outcome, not that it is any worse for it, though I enjoyed the implication that Kiki will handle this situation if Mitsuhide doesn’t manage it.
As much as I love how sumptuous the art is, it is the source of my main issues with this volume. The author is not the best with action scenes and transitions, which I believe I knocked last volume for as well, and it can make things hard to follow. There’s at least one moment where I had to re-read a page three times and I still couldn’t figure out what had happened.
Still, the action is hardly the point, which is why it gets four stars even with that wrinkle. It’s nice to have a volume that lets everybody breathe and this has to be one of the best core casts in any manga I’m reading right now. I am sadly running out of ways to describe its strong points, just based on how consistent it is from volume to volume.
Crisis averted and now it is time for the sweetness to come back pouring in! While they wrap up things in Lyrias, they all get to rest a bit - it was so cute to see Ryuu especially be a child for a while with Kirito. Shidan needs to start making palace visits and bring his nephew along! Zen and Shirayuki also have a sweet moment stargazing (very smooth, Zen, very smooth). After they get back, we have a long-awaited date between Shirayuki and Zen, as they walk around the castle town, shop for souvenirs together etc. Once again, the outfit design is beautiful and cute! And their romantic outing was so fluffy and sweet OMG
The latter part of the book concerns Kiki and her backstory. When she reveals to MItsuhide that she will be leaving the castle next year, he is upset at not knowing about it. So then we go back to 5 years ago, when Kiki first joins Zen’s side, and how that came about to be. Mitsuhide mistaking her for a boy at first is so in character OMG; really, he was in Zen-only mode huh. Kiki is always badass but seing her duelling a spurned suitor was high levels of cool. And then the three of them coming together, and the Kiki and Mitsuhide in the present reminiscing about that time was so heartwarming! Still, looking at Mitsuhide to realize his feelings for her at any moment now.
Received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review from Viz Media LLC, via Edelweiss.
This series is getting an anime! Yes! Hopefully it does well enough to get an official english translation to the U.S. I wouldn't mind having this on my shelves, the couple is just too cute. Plus Kiki is an awesome bodyguard:D
"Snow White with the Red Hair" is fantasy-type manga that takes place in a faraway kingdom. At the beginning of the tale, Shirayuki wants to become an herbalist, but the prince of Tanbarun is planning to make her his concubine! She makes a run for it and encounters Zen, the second prince of the nearby kingdom of Wisteria. Zen helps her escape from her plight and escorts her to his kingdom, where she becomes a full-fledged court herbalist. The rest of the story follows their adventures together (and apart!) as they develop deeper feelings for one another and work to overcome the gap between their social stations.
What impressed me the most about this story was how balanced the characters were. Often, characters are written with extreme characteristics and stereotypes. While this can be funny and distinctive, it can also get old after a while. It was refreshing to see that Shirayuki wasn’t a helpless princess, nor was she refusing assistance. She certainly did want to do things for herself and on her own, but she wasn’t above accepting help when she needed it. Even Zen, despite his stubbornness and rule-flouting tendencies, didn’t just rush off to do whatever he wanted all the time. Instead, he faithfully played the role of prince and followed his duty rather than his emotions.
Personally, I find it so much easier to connect with a character who knows how to flex and adapt as their situation changes. Plus, it was so exciting to see these characters build their relationship the “right way,” by working through the rules and customs of their world so they could perform the roles they’d been given to the best of their abilities.
You can really learn more about a person when going shopping with just them. Like what sort of stores they choose, what items they’re drawn to, how they act. It’s also just fun! And can be a pleasant way to spend time with someone when you feel like doing something but nothing too crazy. That being said, we didn’t get a whole lot of Shirayuki (or Obi) in this volume but I’m perfectly fine with that. We got some quality over quantity— her and Zen shared some absolutely beautiful, romantic, and adorable moments. Apart from that, this volume largely focused on Kiki’s beginnings with Mitsuhide and Zen. I actually really, really enjoyed it and I learned a lot about the group. It was enthralling. Furthermore, Kiki and Mitsuhide have harbored strong feelings for each other probably stemming from that first year together, haven’t they? I can’t help but feel like everything is set up perfectly for the possibility of Kiki and Mitsuhide getting their own spin-off romance series. I wonder if that would ever happen. “A romance between a second prince’s two aides!” It sounds like a good seller, doesn’t it? I also really like the relationship between Kiki and her father— I wish that Akiduki-sensei had had more time to feel out all the avenues she had in mind, including this one. Also x2, Hisame had the design of a protagonist from an isekai, don’t you think? He looked like a main character all on his own. Akiduki-sensei’s character designs are honestly pretty cool. I rarely see a manga or series in general that have this many unique character designs without a character design artist having been involved in the creation.
Overall, I really quite enjoyed this one! Thank you sensei for letting us finally see more into the story of Mitsuhide and Kiki. It’s been overdue.
I Adore This Series So Much & This Volume Was So Good! The Beginning Finished The Last Arc Off & Settled Into What I Can Only Describe As A Mini Arc Covering The Rest Of The Volume There Was An Absolute Adorable Date Chapter Followed By Some BackStory About A Certain Female Knight Which Was So Good To Read, Adding Some Much Needed Depth To Her Character Not Only That Romance Hints Where All About & Its One I Really Want To See Happen! The I Have No Idea What The Next Volume/Arc Will Entail But I Can Safely Say It Will Be Amazing!!
I liked getting some back story for Kiki. She's the quiet character in the series, so she doesn't reveal a lot about herself in a lot of her scenes. This volume felt like it focused entirely on her, though it was only the latter half. The first half is Zen and Shirayuki being cute and going on a date in town. While I do love their romance and how adorable and sweet they both are, learning more about the other characters is a little more interesting. I hope some back story is revealed for some of the other side characters in future volumes
Hi, an Emerson sister here. ARgh, okay I'll take a minute to talk about how amazing this is. This volume shows astounding character development between Kiki and Mitsuhide. and OMG it totally caught me off guard. I mean, I've been shipping those two just because but this... I almost cried at how amazing it was, but I was in a bookstore and it would've looked really weird if I just started sobbing. Another amazing volume. Please keep going Akiduki! I'm enjoying these so much!
I love this... I love the story, i love the unique characters of this story, i love isit lot, i love each and every about the story .. lovely The best romantic story in planet... It's just amazing... I watched the anime version but it only have 2 seasons...i request the creator to continue the story.. please... Anime is the best way to feel the story.... Please continue the story i request you...
We get a cute date between Zen and Shirayuki in the start of this volume, and the rest of it is about Kiki and her background as a noble lady who has to take over for her family one day and her journey as Zen's guard. Its a good volume if you enjoy the side cast as much as I do.
i know zen is obsessed with being Healthy Love Interest or whatever but can he show at least a minute flaw because right now he's flavorless, tbh. let's hope this love triangle that's brewing will end up seasoning him
Wow! Kiki is even more of a BAMF than I thought! °˖✧◝(⁰▿ ⁰)◜ ✧˖° She’s super amazing and I’m glad we got to see more of her in this one.
Honestly, I knew she was amazing from the start of the series, but her awesomeness started to shine even MORE in with the “Claw of the Sea”part. Now, in volume 10, we truly get to see how amazing she is!
2,5 stars Remarkable the attempt to describe a part of the past of Kiki. As usual poor dialogues. Sometimes, it seems they are cut off. Or maybe they are wrongly translated. Besides Kiki's motivations to break her promise as well as to continue to stay in the entourage of Zen are nonsense. The date of Zen and Shirayuki nothing unforgettable.
Basically we get like a background story of how kiki came to the kingdom now finally. And like how mitsuhide thought kiki was a guy at first lmao. Anyways im pretty sure they're hinting of the romance between mitsuhide and kiki? I really like them together though. Zen and shirayuki also went on a really cute wholesome date

Omg Kiki’s backstory!! I love when this series gets some drama and action. It shakes up the otherwise simple plot.
I ship Kiki and Mitsuhide so much. Their scenes this volume were so good!
And we finally got a Shirayuki and Zen DATE! It was a little lackluster, but they truly get so little page time together for a main couple, so I was glad to see them interacting again.
Cute volume thus far! Especially Shirayuki and Zen’s first date. I thought it was funny when Mitsuhide explained to Zen what a date was. And don’t get me started on Kiki’s backstory. Just goes to show they’re more than just characters. Then there’s Ryu - I’m so happy he’s starting to have friends his age and having fun
