Thiago Reyes was separated from his childhood best friend years ago, but after his father dies he inherits the largest drug cartel in the US. His first call to action is to save his captive friend, Manny, from his own father. Rescuing Manny will not only start a full-blown war with Antonio Méndez, but it will put the Reyes family at risk.
Thiago would do anything for Manny.
Rescued But Hurt
Manny Méndez-Beltrán, hidden by his father from potential enemies, was imprisoned for over four years in his bedroom. He lost hope that Thiago would rescue him, and when he finally does, Manny is furious. Thiago had abandoned him with his father for a long time, and the fear that the love of his life has found someone else weighs on his mind. The world has gone on without him, leaving Manny inexperienced and feeling out of place.
No Path, Except Through the Flames
Reunited, Thiago and Manny must learn to be with each other again. As their relationship grows to what it should have been years ago, the fallout rages on around them. Manny either must learn to fight at Thiago’s side or risk being seen as too weak to be the jefe’s future husband. If he can’t toughen up, someone will kill him, and the bullet might come from either side.
I spend most of my days writing, editing, and perfecting the craft of storytelling.
A note to readers: I don't hang out on Goodreads or social media, so if you have any questions about my books, please check out my website, which I host with M.D. Gregory.
I'm going to start working on re-editing High! For those of you who are Spanish speakers, specifically who speak Mexican Spanish, you probably noticed some goofs in the book. Some of them were undoubtedly just me, some were language choices made because the people helping us spoke Spanish, but not from the area Manny and Thiago are from. We always want to make sure we get things as correct as possible, and one of the joys of self-publishing is that we can fix things when there are errors.
Shelby De Jesus was phenomenal and helped put together a list of issues with the book that I am planning to go through and correct.
So, thank you all for your patience. We will be fixing that book up! We want to continue writing the series, so we need to get things right. <3
Happy reading! ~Ki Brightly

Hi!
Thank you everyone for continuing to support M.D. Gregory and myself while we write these books set in the universe of New Gothenburg! I had a lot of fun writing High, and I hope that came through in the story.
M.D. and I tend to write characters who aren't "sweet and fluffy", so it was nice to delve into this intense romance between Manny and Thio and see where their story took them. I also had a lot of fun researching for this book. Neither M.D. nor myself are Spanish speakers (beyond some classes, which woefully left me unprepared to tackle the Spanish in this book), so we had the help of Ana, who was fantastic and really helped us kick the authenticity of the book up a notch.
Anyone who knows my writing knows it's about how the character feels and the wild rides they go on, and I hope that you were able to sink into these characters and love them the way I do. At the end of every book I love all of our characters more than I ever thought I could.
Happy reading and welcome back to New Gothenburg... err... Pleasant Beach! LoL
I really enjoyed this. It was not perfect, but I enjoyed it.
I did have issues with the characterisation though. First was with how Manny could have remained so naive while growing up in such a household boggled my mind.
Also, how his first time with Thiago went made my jaw drop, especially with how fragile Manny had been behaving prior to that point.
To even further boggle my mind, Manny loved it? And afterwards he was miraculously a tough guy? This same Emmanuel Miguel Méndez-Beltrán? It just didn't add up. In my mind, I was saying: "Who is this and what have they done to Manny?".
Regardless of all the issues raised above though, I actually enjoyed the story and will be continuing this series.
Despite the title, neither of the main characters use drugs, they are each other's addiction. I received an arc of this book, and while I enjoyed the story for the most part and never considered not finishing, I'm not crazy about romanticizing drug operations and trying to redeem the characters by having them go after poachers or making it seem like the damage done by the use of their product is balanced by the improvements made in the lives of the farmers who grow the crops. Still, I found the romance oddly satisfying when it's not my typical fare.
Warning: contains graphic violence and a dub-con public sex scene, but if you have already suspended your disbelief to accept drug cartel members as romantic figures then it should not be a problem accepting that the characters got a thrill out of the situation.
I absolutely loved this book! Thiago and Manny are great characters, and though Manny comes off as a bit naive in the beginning of the book, despite growing up as the son of a drug cartel lord, it’s easily explained by his father completely sheltering and overprotecting him, and generally keeping him in the dark and outside the cartel business. Thiago on the other hand has been raised by his father to take over the reins of the cartel one day and now that the day has come, he is Jefe, the boss. Thiago has always been in in love with Manny and now that he has rescued him from his father he wants to spoil him and give him everything he can, that does not mean he becomes a big softie, though. On the contrary, he is a very morally-grey character, who needs and wants to be in control any time, and does not hesitate to take out enemies or people who show any disloyalty towards him or the familia. The story is intriguing, the characters are great and the narration is superb!
Thank you for the ARC read, I voluntarily give this book an honest review. The opening few pages you feel for a young Manny being shut away from his life by an a father unwilling to share why. Year after year pass without a word from Manny, was he hurt? Mad? Would he still even care about Thio? Being mad was one thing but Manny was showing Thio disrespect in front of his men..just how long can he allow that to continue. Manny is about to have a whole new level of awareness to his new life but is he ready to handle it or has he been locked way or coddled off to long. Hold on to you seat because these two are going to take the read on one hot rod after another.
I was immediately drawn into this action packed story of drug cartel boss Thio and the love of his life Manny.
Manny is imprisoned in his family home for more than 4 years by his father to keep him safe. Thio, his childhood friend and crush rescues him. It begins their lives together filled with danger, violence, love and sex.
I really enjoyed the pacing of the story. It was fast paced with plenty of action but also slow enough to build the strong relationship between Manny and Thio that had fractured in their time apart.
Brutal realities of life at the top of a drug cartel meet a loved up couple in this intense story I'd happily recommend.
Cartel romance and m/m are two of my favorite genres, so I had extremely high hopes for this one. It’s not poorly written, nor is it a bad story, I just couldn’t feel the connection between the main characters. I assume this was because we don’t get to see their romance develop. Instead, we are simply told that they had feelings for each other they before they are separated for several years, their reunion, the majority of this story. Without seeing their feelings blossom, it didn’t feel genuine, nor did the emotions feel genuine or palpable.
It wasn't what I was expecting at all. The concept was interesting, and it has a few good ideas, but the execution severely lacks. The plot has holes big enough to ram a truck through and some explanations just don't make sense. The pacing is inconsistent and too fast overall. It definitively needs more pages. Also, as a native Spanish speaker, some of the Spanish used makes me cringe. It felt stilt and unnatural, and there were several errors. Unfortunately, that's a common issue with MM books. If you're a writer and you don't speak Spanish (or French, or Russian, or whatever language your characters use), please get a native speaker (or, at least, someone who can speak it at a professional level) to check it for you. I suppose I'll have to keep looking for a good, dark criminal lovers story.
There is nothing heartwarming or gentle about this book, so definitely do not read it looking for your standard hurt/comfort or redemptive love story. No one is “saved” or made better by love in this novel, and if you actually sit down and parse what happens to Manny, you’ll probably want to get him a trauma counselor and witness protection. This isn’t a soft or soothing read, but, if you take it on its own terms, it’s a compelling one. Manny is the son of a drug lord who’s been imprisoned for 4 years by his paranoid father. Thio is the son and heir of a rival cartel, and when he gets command of his father’s empire he goes to rescue his childhood sweetheart. He’s no saint, and despite some sweet shared moments between them his love for Manny doesn’t change anything about him: he’s violent and controlling, and expresses his love through domination, public humiliation, and a lot of other things that, while hot to read about, would be decidedly uncomfortable if Manny didn’t seem to want them as much as Thio does. (If you don’t believe me, wait until the first time they have sex. Which is also, it should be noted, Manny’s first time ever having sex). It’s hard to argue at the beginning that Manny isn’t a victim, but he does grow to make his own choices, and he chooses Thio. The way he finds his own strength and makes a place for himself at Thio’s side is ultimately my favorite part of the novel, and while he isn’t the same person he was at the beginning, he’s stronger, safer, and happier than he was as his father’s prisoner, and that’s not nothing.
*An ARC was provided to me and I have chosen to publish a fair and honest review*
A new series, but we also get to see some known faces. This time we're getting close with the largest drug cartel in the US. Thiago and Manny grew up together with their dads had a shared business and when they got older feelings started to change. What also changes is that their fathers hava falling out and becomes enemies and all that results in Manny being hidden away as a prisoner in his bedroom for 4 years.
When Thiago.dad dies and he becomes El Jefe of the cartel his first action is to save Manny.
This isn't a sweet feelgood romance and it has a lot of violence in it so if sweet is what you're looking for this isn't it. Although Manny and Thiago has some sweet moments there's always a need for Thiago to not show weakness or being soft as El Jefe. This makes life as his partner hard and Manny is still very innocent in every way.
What I loved about the book is that we got to visit the Norse Gods.and Odins club and the run ins with Killough and Conall. I really hope that they don't stay enemies.
What I liked less was the way Thiago thought that Manny should behave the way he wanted from the start and how they dealt with Manny first time. The only thing that saved it was that Manny gave the okay in the end.
I'm curious about what's going to happen and would love more interaction between series.
Just finished listening to this Audio Book!!! WOW! This narrator did a Fantastic job with the accents and the personalities of each character just jumped out at you! I have not read the book, just listened and I absolutely loved it. It was a gritty and realistic story, keeping the character of Thiago True to what you would believe for a Cartel leader. I actually liked and respected him even when how he handle things was not "nice" or "romantic".. He was a product of his family and environment.. but there was one thing about him that did not falter.. his love for his Family and his Manny!!.. I absolutely adored Manny and the way the narrator voiced him. He was sweet and innocent from being held prisoner in his father's home for four years, but still had the toughness and desires needed to survive in this Cartel world. The book was very descriptive of the characters and the landscapes and homes. I felt like I was there, could visualize the beaches and sand in my toes!!! This story was violent, gritty, steamy hot, and yes even sweet and romantic when Manny and Thiago were alone. Manny was a virgin and that first time with Thiago was shocking but so potent for this story and their relationship. It showed just why they were perfect for each other. OH and adorable bear, bobcat and tiger cubs!!! I highly recommend this audio!! I will be listening to every book in this series!!!
Thiago Reyes obtains a dangerous, and powerful promotion as head of the drug cartel after his father dies. Manny Mendez-Beltran is the love of Thio's life, who was locked up by his own father for years, awaiting his return.
While Manny waited, Thio and life outside his prison-like walls went on. His love returns for him. Now he must prove he can be by his side. Can Manny fulfill all his expected roles? Is Thio willing to do whatever it takes to keep all the balls in the air?
Initially, I wasn't a fan of Thiago, but what is a good, hard core series without at least one character that doesn't rub you the right way. Once you got to know him - peeling back all the calloused layers - appreciation and respect emerged. Doesn't change my love for the ongoing series and I can't wait to see that is next for The Reyes Cartel.
**I receive this ARC via Gay Romance Reviews for my honest feedback.**
Thiago Reyes-Montero had waited a long four years three months three days and twelve hours to see his Manny again, the plans had been made and it was finally time! When Manny had gone to visit his father that last time they hadn't known he would be prevented from coming back by his father after he severed all ties with Thiago's father and their joint business dealings. He was six years older than Manny and had loved him for as long as he could remember, because of Manny's age he had held back but the plan had been to talk to Manny when Thiago picked him up from that last visit. I absolutely loved this book, there was such alot going on in their story and I read the entire book in one sitting I was so engrossed and wanted to find out what was going to happen next.
First of all, I spent most of the book just disliking Thio. He knows he is selfish and overly possessive which shows from the start. He rescues Manny and expects things to be the same as before he was locked up, and the ptsd seems to come from left field for him.
Manny is too wrapped up in his hero worshipping to think straight and manage on his own, Thio takes advantage of it. And I really didn't believe Manny truly wanted to be treated the way he did.
It picked up towards the end and I managed to enjoy it more. I felt the author did a bit of a cop out with not including some more gory scenes, specially since it seems to be a big part of the story. There's plenty of blood and murder, and dubious consent.
So much to like in this book that I'm surprised it hasn't received more reviews. I really like that Manny and Thio had a history together and it was just so sweet to read their love and attachment. I'm quickly coming to love whatever these two authors write because it's different and somehow they don't compromise on the details. It's all very well fleshed out, I enjoyed reading Manny and Thio more so than Killiough's story. Also this one was less intense in the Mafia stuff but still so much better than half the "mafia" novels I've read so far. I hope there's more books in the Reyes Cartel series. Maybe something with Arlo? He needs some lovin of you ask me.
Typical. I have adored the stories written by Ki Brightly and M.D Gregory.
Each have had their own twists and turns and this is no different. After Thiago decides he want to finally make a move on his childhood sweetheart, Manny is locked away by his father.
Thiago treats Manny with kid gloves upon his rescue. Which is a mistake. After everything hes been through, hes stronger than either of them know.
Watching them reconnect and Manny grow strong made this story so enjoyable, it feels like a short story. I loved how Rosa told Manny she became a force to be feared. It helped Manny realise his own power.
Manny and Thio were interesting characters. Manny, held prisoner by his father for so many years was fairly childish in the beginning. His emotional growth stunted. Thio was at the opposite end. He sort of over compensated for losing Manny by completely embracing his dark side. Coldly taking lives with no remorse, running his drug cartel with an iron hand.
I never really warmed to these guys. I like dark books and don’t mind blood so that’s not the issue. Their relationship, while hot, just didn’t resonate with me. I’ve read other books by these authors, so while this one didn’t work for me, I will definitely continue to read their books.
I got so caught up in this story I couldn't put it down. Thiago and Manny have so many obstacles to being together and it says a lot that the fact that Thiago runs a drug cartel is one of the least of them. Manny's distrust and hurt at the fact that he was left imprisoned so long and not rescued weighs down their relationship to a degree almost impossible to overcome. The authors' take on this variation of the hurt/comfort trope is amazing. Mix in those who would kill Manny and the requirement that he "prove" himself even as he an Thiago begin to rebuild their trust and relationship and you have a roller coaster ride that doesn't stop. I absolutely cannot wait for more in this series.
4.5 Stars Thio and Manny grew up together with Thio knowing that Manny was always meant to be his. Their fathers once friends and business associates had a falling out that resulted in Manny’s father locking him away at his estate. The really liked this book. It was a great love story with many obstacles that made the MCs grow stronger in themselves and their relationship. Would love to see another book with some of the other characters.
I received an advanced copy of this book for an honest review.
An action packed emotional roller coaster of a ride. Thiago and Manny were on fire together and burned bright whenever they interacted. This is not a light or fluffy book but it does have some sweet moments. Manny finds his stride and stands strong beside his Hefe but it takes longer then either of them expected to get to this point. It really ramped up the action at the end and just was an absolute thrilling ride full of violence, domination and all out chaos plus a cheeky appearance by known characters in this world. An hellacious and slightly dark experience.
Thiago’s father dies and leaves him everything including a drug cartel. He rescues his childhood best friend, Manny. Manny has been locked up/imprisoned for the last four years. He seemed kind of child like at times. Thiago turned to his dark side in that time. The story was action packed and filled with danger, some dub-con, violence, love and sex. There’s nothing feel good about this story but it is hot steamy. I’m voluntarily reviewing from an advanced copy that I received.
For many reasons this was kind of a disappointment... Manny gave in, to easily to Thio. He has every reason to be mean and snarky, but Thio just forced him to shut it down. I wanted to strangle Thio, he was just an overbearing donkey( can't say the other word). He kept going on about how much he missed and loved Manny but he didn't wait for him. The idea was good but I would of liked a a different execution
I really loved this book. It kept my interest and entertained while I wondered what would happen next! It was definitely not predictable. I did think Manny was being a bit like a whiny brat at first but he snapped out of it eventually.
I didnt give it 5 stars because I felt it was unfinished. Im sure the next book will address Miami and the inevitable war between cartels but there was no further mention of it in epilogue so yeah I felt it was unfinished.
First of all I'm absolutely in love with the gorgeous cover of this book!
This book was quite a heavy read borderlying on dark. I love stories involving Cartels and Mobs and the setting of this story was pretty authentically written.
This was a fast paced action packed read which was engaging right from the very first page.
Thiago and Manny were great well written characters. I loved the author's writing style.
Reading about the Reyes cartel in the other books and getting to know them more in this audible was a treat. Manny and Thiago had a intense love affair. Thiago very possessive but loving and Manny kind of spoiled but loyal. Story has violence with some romantic moments thrown in here and there. The narrator was great with the voices. Overal I enjoyed it...it was worth the listen.
This story is full of emotion. Manny is locked away by his father supposedly to protect him. He has hoped and waited for Thiago to come rescue him. When Thiago does rescue him, Manny is mad at Thiago for not doing so sooner. Together Thiago’s possessiveness comes out. Manny being inexperienced in love and life finds a way to fit. I liked the characters. I think the story flow was smooth. I feel the narrator Joseph Thorson did a good job at bringing the characters to life.
These two authors never fail. Outstanding!!! You done it again. I couldn’t put this book down but let’s be real I can never put any of your books down. Loved this two characters. I loved that Sloan and Conall made an appearance, too bad these don’t get along cause they would definitely be powerful together.😉😉 I can’t wait for the next book you two to be released.❤️
I’ve said it before but it bears repeating these authors have created the hottest, action packed, suspenseful, and thrilling universe I’ve ever read. The book introduces another group of bad guys(that are sooo good). I didn’t put this book down once started. The whole series is basically like crack and I don’t want rehab.
Wow ki has done it again what a amazing story. So much action and adventure with lots of plot twists and interesting characters. Loved Manny in his incidence. Thiago has his hands full between Manny and his fathers empire. In the end Thiago saves not only Manny but there love. Great HEA.
