Deep in the Korean mountains, U.S. sniper Caje Cole and his squad are on patrol when they witness a dogfight that ends with an American pilot being shot down over enemy territory. Cole leads the rescue effort that puts him in conflict with a deadly Chinese sniper, but that turns out to be the least of his worries. Enemy forces are on the move, starting with the capture of an outpost just beyond the American line. To stop a large Chinese force poised to smash American defenses, Cole joins a makeshift unit sent to hold an ancient fort at a mountain pass. Joining his squad will be Korean volunteers and a platoon of disgraced troops seeking a second chance to prove themselves. These misfits will fight a desperate last stand against overwhelming odds as Cole faces a showdown of his own with the enemy sniper and a ruthless political officer.
David Healey made his publishing debut with SHARPSHOOTER, a what-if historical thriller about an attempt to assassinate Union General Ulysses S. Grant during the Civil War, published by an imprint of Penguin Putnam. That novel was the result of years of research into the Civil War that included time as a reenactor at Gettysburg and other battlefields.
In its review, the Civil War News wrote: “SHARPSHOOTER has the feel of a techno-thriller, the kind offered by Tom Clancy or Dean Koontz ... SHARPSHOOTER moves quickly and is filled with all manner of intrigue."
Healey has brought that same passion for research and history to his World War II novels, GHOST SNIPER, ARDENNES SNIPER, and RED SNIPER. During a 21-year career as a journalist, he was fortunate enough to interview many veterans of the 29th Division who landed at Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944. Some of the events and characters in these novels were inspired by their stories.
He loves the idea of a character like Micajah Cole, a self-reliant backwoods hunter who turns out to be unrelenting and ruthless as a sniper, especially against a skilled adversary, in the pages of these books.
In addition to fiction, he has written books on regional history, including 1812: REDISCOVERING CHESAPEAKE BAY'S FORGOTTEN WAR and GREAT STORMS OF THE CHESAPEAKE.
A graduate of Washington College and the Stonecoast MFA program, he was recognized in 2011 as a Chaney Scholar in history by St. Mary’s College of Maryland. Visit him online at www.davidhealeyauthor.com or follow him at Facebook at facebook.com/david.healey.books
I was not so sure about the ending but, glad of it. The story rings true for much of the 8 books. I am not sure Caje could have gotten that far without being able to read or write. He it’s fiction and the author felt, rightfully, that it adds to the story and raises up the image of the Hillbillies. Now on to number 9
I have read the last three David Healey books and enjoyed them. I spent thirteen months in Korea with the U.S. Army 7th Div. and have found the sniper series very interesting. Loved the ending of Fallen Sniper and can't wait for book # 9.
Came Cole is a tough old bird, and extremely resourceful. May be short on school education, but very Resourceful, skilled survivalist. Once mire, David healed keeps the reader on edge, and unable to stop reading cover to cover.
Cole and the Kid rescue a downed American pilot from the clutches of Cole's nemesis. Fighting a delaying action from a centuries old stone jungle fort would this suffer the same fate as its namesake, the Alamo?
Couldn't get over the realism depicted in thus novel. I could read more of this author. Since reading us my only form of entertainment, I truly enjoy a good read. Thank you.
David Healey writes with such color and descriptions you read well well to the end of the story. The characters are very well described and the interplay between them gives a true to life story of the conflict in Korea.
Is this end of Cole’s story? I highly recommend the whole series to completely understand the whole arc of the Sinper’s full story! Hope there maybe a final book to complete the story.
Great book david. I enjoyed it immensely. Thank you very much. I wss infantry in nam and I appreciate the guys who fought in the Korean war zone. Police action
This is the sixth Sniper series book I have read. I do not plan to stop reading until I finish the whole series. David Healy puts you in the middle of the action.
