For what this book ended up being, it's not the worst thing I've ever read. But I'm so disappointed! The first two books were entertaining and well written for the shifter genre. I was so ready for this third book to take all the drama and resolution from the first two books and deepen both the romantic and platonic relationships, and, most of all, finally show Peter as an equal. Unfortunately, this third book fell back on the same old power dynamics and the exact same trope from the first two books. I don't understand how the characters tell Peter over and over that he's the strongest and bravest person they know - in fact, it's repeated multiple times throughout this book - and yet everyone (especially Damon) continues to treat him as lesser in almost every aspect. Honestly? Peter deserves so much more and it's hard to see what he's relegated to by the end of the series. And even more disappointing is how static Damon's character is. Sadly, his and Peter's relationship feels forced and uncomfortable by the end of this book as Damon never grows or changes how he treats Peter.
And I'm not opposed to reading mpreg, but it came out of left field and was so not a good fit for this story. I personally hate when a pregnancy is introduced into a story and then all the drama is built around it. Despite the blurb's warning of only "mild torture" - or as I read it, mild trauma - this book has a disturbing and gratuitous amount of torture/trauma made even more disturbing considering a pregnancy is involved. It completely killed the fun YA/Twilight-esque vibe, and the story quickly devolved into overdone tropes.
I'm giving this 2 stars because while I was entertained despite the books many flaws, I could never bring myself to read it again. I plan to try Queenie's next book, but I'll always be bummed with how this series ended (I'm assuming this is the end as there was no mention or hint of a fourth book, and I'm not sure I'd read it if there was one). I think readers could read the first two books and skip this one entirely if they don't want to end the series on a lackluster book.
