I don't know if it was because I was in a Sherlock Holmes mode, but I thoroughly enjoyed these books! I'd already gone through the originals and it was very gratifying to find more stories with the voice of the canon. My only beef with these is no pictures, the constant smoking ( really, the older characters didn't smoke that much, if so it wasn't mentioned so much), and several redundant points for Watson. I got the impression he complained a bit much when his feelings got hurt. He and Holmes seemed to have some of the same conversations. Otherwise, I loved this read. The stories were great with the classic Holmes drama and fantastic mystery. Definitely a keeper for my library.
These were entertaining stories. I'm not a 'Sherlockian', nor do I possess the expertise to say whether or not the works are true to Sir Arthur's creation. But they do read well, the stories move along, and I enjoyed the cross-referencing across the 6 books of the volume.
For any Sherlockians out there, is there a data store anywhere that compiles all the various Authors' works in a timeline or topical listing?
Each of these six books in this set was enjoyable. The first three, while they can stand alone, are also connected to each other and make for a rousing good read. The latter three each contains a separate group of cases. The author has captured Conan Doyle's Sherlock very well. Highly recommended.
There is no way I can commend each of these many stories. So I will simply say that my admiration of Mr. Gilbert's imaginative writing, along with his respect for the classic Holmes stories, continues to grow. I look forward to reading many more of his creations. Highly recommended.
I have to say that for anyone who really enjoyed reading the ACD stories, this set of continuing adventures is something to read as well. It is much better than some of the stories written by others that I have read in the past. Do yourself a favor, and get it!
The characters, Baker Street and all the trappings of Sherlock Holmes and Watson are delightfully portrayed by Gilbert. I would get moments whilst reading that Conan Doyle was writing again and that is such a skill.
Gilbert breathes new life to our detective hero with period perfect settings and diologue used to bring stories worthy of Sir Arthur Conan Dolye himself. A twist at every turn of the page with well developed plots.
The author takes pains to accurately document locations and activities in the Victorian period of Holmes' life. Watson recorded both the facts and emotions present in the cases.
Every bit as delightful as reading the original. Taking on cases that were mentioned in Doyle's works was inspired. His rendering of the characters is spot-on.
