Infinite Core is the fifth book in the bestselling School of Swords and Serpents series, a tale of wuxia adventure, cultivation mastery, and lurking threats.
I feel like my reviews of the series have just been a lot of whining but in all honesty it does come for the most part from a place of having enjoyed the series actually. I've gone back and forth on this book between a two and three star rating but had to settle at three because it was still fun. It's almost like reading a b movie. It's going to get cheesy there's going to be some bad acting and worse plot but if you don't take it too serious it's going to be okay.
Quite honestly this series and book can be summed up mostly in the reviews title. As a fifth book in the young adult martial arts genre bending fantasy it relies heavily on the previous books. Unfortunately the continuity errors in the storyline, characters, abilities and even power levels of the stages of development means the story doesn't really have a foundation to stand on.
This makes the story really distracting if you start paying attention. It can be a fun ride if you just go with it and ignore anything that contradicts whatever was written before. It doesn't leave a bad taste in your mouth but it also is an adventure that can be enjoyed I believe if you're a patient reader.
If you're looking for in-depth consistency this is not a series for you. The plot lines and power leveling is ridiculous and doesn't even make much sense. It is honestly a haphazard mess if you think about it logically. when you have characters that are supposed to be the strongest beings in the world who should be able to destroy the main character with a blink and fail to do so plot armor doesn't even begin to describe it. This book takes it up a notch as our main protagonist faces a spiritually cosmic being. So the idea is to enjoy this series you really have to say screw it and ignore what you previously read and go with it.
Don't know how long since I read the last one, or how much I liked it or what things I disliked about the series, but this is pretty much unreadable, the mc has power but doesn't use it, much to his and everyone around him's detriment, the only saving grace is he isn't whiny, and clueless, just ignorant and lacking agency. I read the previous books in the series don't remember if this was an ongoing character issue, but that kills it for me.
This was a decent series but if anything I feel like the main character is regressing. Lots of inconsistencies that really make it hard to power through. I only got about 35% into it before I had to put it down. Maybe I’m wrong and it gets better but it’s the end of the series for me.
I liked that Jace took on a new role and continued to grow but the story was slow to start and the ending was lacking something. I like these books and still look forward for the next installment.
Like similar reviews - a fun book that fits nicely into the series. Some good fight scenes with Jace's clan versus the others and ended on a cliffhanger heading into the final book.
Another wuxia adventure full of cultivation mastery and so many lurking threats in this, book 5 in the awesome series School of Swords and Serpents. In this book Jace Warin, know a the clan elder of the Shadow Phoenix clan, is forced to bring back his empty core students known as hollows from their safe hideaway in Shambala, where they were being sheltered and taught by the dragons. Jace was forced to do this because he was threatened by annihilation of the clan by the council. Once the students are back Jace is pushed to his limits to protect them as all the other clans turn against them and decide to force them into one on one duels, hoping to make them part of their own clans. Apart from this lurking danger Jace can feel the Grand Design about to unravel unless he finishes his quest, and the clock is ticking. Jace had to produce a new empyreal flame in order to see his quest through and save the world, but he is seen as a threat and the powers that be want to see him imprisoned if not killed outright. However his rebellious students knew they were fighting for survival against a system that had used and betrayed them, and they vowed to battle till their last breath side by side with Jace, their esteemed elder. What Jace attempts to do to save the world is so ambitious and risky! Can he pull his most daring stunt through? As usual I love that the team of friends though from different clans always watch Jace’s back. I also really loved the ambition of this book, it took us, the readers on such a magnificent roller coaster ride leaving us totally breathless by the end of it and it stops on a cliffhanger ending so roll on book 6.
